In dieser epische Musikzeitreise episode of Past Tens: The Top 10 Zeitmaschine, your trusty hosts — Herr Doktor Dave and Der Wilden Miltmeister — strap on their sonic lederhosen and dive kopfüber into the Billboard Top 10 Albums for the Woche ending April 12, 1975 — ja wohl! With all the precision of a Bavarian clockmaker and the subtlety of a bratwurst cannon, they analyze und rocken diskutieren legendary platten from musikalische titans like Led Zeppelin (or as they say in Munich, Blei Zeppelin), David Bowie (Der Dünne Weirdo), John Lennon (Der Friedensbringer mit der Brille), and Earth, Wind & Fire (Erde, Wind und Feuerkraft!). This episode is vollgepackt with music history, lustige Anekdoten, and enough nostalgia to fill a beer stein the size of Düsseldorf. Dave und Milt pay tribute to the unterschätzte Helden — unsung heroes like Minnie Riperton (Die Göttin der Hohen Töne) and Robin Trower (Der Gitarren-Zauberer von Essex). Of course, it wouldn't be a Past Tens episode without their patented spielfreudige Segmente like The Play Date (Das Spielzeit-Quiz!), where they test each other's Rock und Roll Gehirn on song trivia — and The Substitution (Der Platten-Tausch!), where they boot an album off the list like a rude tourist from Oktoberfest and replace it with a beloved verlorene Klassiker. This episode is ein absoluter Ohrenschmaus for music lovers who appreciate both the Mega-Hits and Tiefe Schnittwunden (deep cuts) from the golden, shag-carpeted glory of the Mid-70er Jahre. Mach schnell! Put on your headphones, grab a frothy beverage, and crank up Past Tens: The Top 10 Zeitmaschine! Jawohl, baby! Hey well-read baddies! This week we're back with another #Black365 minisode and are joined by Cecily (@CecilyAlexa)—singer, songwriter, and one of the 13,000 members of the recording academy. The Washington, DC native has a rich, soothing sound rooted in mid-century Soul and Jazz. Often drawing comparisons to Minnie Riperton and Amel Larrieux, her music is imbued with a unique sensuality that informs not only her vocal approach, but also her self-reflecting lyrics. Cecily has been heralded for her poetic writing style. Grounded in an easy vulnerability, her lyrics speak of deep lessons around self-acceptance, freedom, community and love. We dive into her creative process, how All About Love by Bell Hooks shaped her latest project, and why music is basically a spell (so choose your bops wisely). 01:52 Introduction and Shout Out Corner 3:42 Coffee Break 31:03 Get into the Guest Books mentioned and recs- https://bookshop.org/shop/shewellread We can't wait to hear from you! :) Please send any questions or comments about this episode to shewellread@gmail.com or use the form at the bottom of the SWR Podcast page: https://www.shewellread.com/contact OR leave us a Voice Note at https://www.speakpipe.com/shewellread Follow SHE WELL READ! Minnie Riperton (1947-1979) was an American soul singer, best known for the 1975 hit song “Lovin’ You.” From an early age, Riperton captivated audiences with her extraordinary five-octave vocal range and command of the whistle register. At the peak of her commercial success, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and became one of few celebrities to share her diagnosis publicly. She defied expectations for Black artists in the music industry and remained a beacon positivity until the end of her life. The Original New Timbral Orchestra (TONTO) is the first and largest multitimbral polyphonic analog synthesizer, capable of producing many tone colours with different voices simultaneously. Beginning with a single Moog Series III Modular in 1968, creators Malcolm Cecil and Robert Margouleff continued to expand TONTO with modules from different manufacturers, along with custom additions designed by Cecil. It marked the first attempt at creating a universal language for different synthesizers to communicate with each other, which was revolutionary. Under the name Tonto's Expanding Head Band, Cecil and Margouleff released the highly influential album Zero Time. The album demonstrated the rich, layered sounds of the massive synth, attracting significant attention and major collaborations. TONTO can be heard on many Stevie Wonder classics, including “Superstition," “Living for the City” and “You Are the Sunshine of My Life,” as well as hits by the Isley Brothers, Minnie Riperton, Joan Baez, the Doobie Brothers, Quincy Jones, Randy Newman and others. Jason Tawkin leads us through the incredible story of how this massive instrument came to be donated to the National Music Centre in Calgary, Canada, and its renovation, enabling TONTO's full capabilities to be used by musicians from around the world once again… If you can, please support the Electronically Yours podcast via my Patron: patron.com/ellectronicallyours
Let’s get right to Yola telling us about her new recording in her own words: "From covering Soul II Soul for a reputable outlet, to my covers on tour and reworkings of my songs — the broad church of soul music through the ages has always been the narrative. This time I’m exploring my love of soul music through influences like Chaka Khan, Janet Jackson, Sade, Prince, Minnie Riperton, and various luminaries of rare groove and progressive R‘n’B. Layering programming and synths with organic instrumentation is at the core of the sonic landscape, and as usual I have metabolised these elements into a concoction very much of my own."
This Monday morning Elle kicks off with some Pale Saints, Minnie Riperton and The Velvet Underground. She's joined by a co-pilot for the second hour of the show, with surprise guest Heidi Simpson! They spoke about the current state of pop music, phone addictions and all the music they have been loving lately.
This isn't an ableist episode full of executive function shame but it is an episode in honor of Virgo Season asking what are our systems, processes and practices for getting shit done and feeling good while doing it? I've been there, the over-extended teacher inspiring a classrooms worth of epiphanies but too tired to go home and fill the cup from which the curriculum flows. Maybe you've been there too, the over-extended teacher with a depleted capacity for your own curiosity. The healer with an over-committed calendar leaving no time to tend to your own spirit. The community organizer growing exhausted from the demands of parasocial relationships while your closest, most nourishing relationships suffer. How might checking in with our longings, our boundaries, our needs and nurturing a relationship within ourselves where we're allowed to want, to desire, to create, to rest, cultivate more secure attachments and relationships beyond ourselves? We had the pleasure of interviewing Skylar Simone over Zoom video! In the dynamic realm of music, Skylar Simone emerges as one to watch, blending raw authenticity with impeccable control to create a sound that resonates deeply with audiences worldwide. The daughter of an NFL player, Skylar grew up in multiple cities, creating a unique mix of cultural influences. Upon discovering her vocal talent and love for music at the age of 9, she began to hone her performing ability by singing the National Anthem at various stadiums across the country. Her tight-knit family ultimately moved to Los Angeles to support her dream of launching a successful music career. “I feel like I'm this veteran, even though I'm only 22 years old, because I've been out here hustling for over a decade,” Skylar reflects.Skylar's musical journey is a testament to her unwavering dedication and natural talent. From mastering the drums to sharpening her skills on the piano, her versatility defines a uniqueness that demands attention. Drawing inspiration from iconic figures such as Janet Jackson, Whitney Houston, and Minnie Riperton, as well as contemporary artists like SZA and RAYE, Skylar infuses her own unique flair into every note, crafting a signature sound that is emotionally rich.Skylar formed a clear bond with legendary producer Dernst "D'Mile" Emile II (Bruno Mars, Silk Sonic, Victoria Monet), as evidenced on the title track of her upcoming Def Jam EP release. “Shiver” is a passionately honest song from a distinctly feminine perspective that captures the sweet chase and sensation of romantic touch. “Once my body shakes, you'll know it's time,”she expresses between pronounced, exasperated breaths before foreshadowing the feelings evoked by the single: “You'll know what I like when I shiver"). Her work with D'Mile, which also includes “Shut Up,” leaves Skylar plenty of room to play with texture in clever ways, particularly when it comes to her vocal range, which encompasses a 4-octave kaleidoscope of tones. Having recently signed with Tunji Balogun and Def Jam Recordings, Skylar is ready to catapult into the next phase of her career with her new EP, Shiver, largely produced in the US, with moments bred in London with Scribz and Talay Riley (Kendrick Lamar, Doja Cat, 21 Savage, Khalid). The project serves as a testament to her artistic growth and evolution, and a musical re-introduction. Exploring themes of love of another and the self, and acting from a place of heartbreak and confidence—as well as finding the latter through the pain of the former—the project embodies the contrasts of human emotion, inviting listeners on a visceral journey of self-discovery. From the flashy, syncopated groove of "Permission" to the aching vulnerability of "Someone Who Cares," each track showcases Skylar's range and prowess as both a vocalist and a storyteller. In everything she touches, visually and sonically, sexy playfulness and buoyant youthful energy reign supreme.Throughout her career, authenticity and diligence have been Skylar's guiding principles. With lyrics that are equal parts blunt and sweet, she invites listeners into her world: one of self-confidence, acceptance, and motivation to move forward. She is poised to make a lasting impact on the world stage: “There's this sense of freedom that only music can guide us toward,” Simone reflects. It is here that the true power of her craft, and by extension her voice, blossom. We want to hear from you! Soul is one of those concepts that is often evoked, but rarely satisfactorily defined. In The Meaning of Soul: Black Music and Resilience Since the 1960s (Duke University Press 2020), Emily J. Lordi takes on the challenge of explaining “soul,” through a book that zooms in and out between sweeping ideas about suffering and resilience in Black culture and fine-grained, close readings of individual performances by soul musicians. Rather than centering big musical gestures and major popular hits, Lordi pays close attention to musical practices like falsetto, ad-libs, and false endings to ground her analysis. She focuses on artists that are some of the most recognizable Black singers in the United States such as Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone, and James Brown, but she also spends a lot of time with more obscure figures including Donny Hathaway and Minnie Riperton. She ends the book with a powerful contemplation of how the logic of soul, born in the political and social tumult of the late 1960s, still resonates with some of today's most popular women singers. Emily J. Lordi is an Associate Professor of English at Vanderbilt University. The Meaning of Soul is her third book. In addition to her scholarly work, she is an active cultural critic and music journalist published in venues such as Billboard, The Atlantic, and NPR. Kristen M. Turner is a lecturer in the music and honors departments at North Carolina State University. Her research centers on race and class in American popular entertainment at the turn of the twentieth century. Learn more about your ad choices. This is the story of a love song that sings from beyond the grave. Lovin' You started life as a lullaby for baby Maya Rudolph, the child of singer Minnie Riperton and songwriter Richard Rudolph. Stevie Wonder, who co-produced the record, plays the gorgeous electronic keyboard accompaniment. It was a late-entry addition to MInnie's solo album Perfect Angel, and the baby oriented lyrics had to be adapted to make it more about romantic love. But the gentle feeling of bliss it conveys is a perfect rendering of maternal devotion, and to insure the communication of its original intent Minnie chants: “Maya, Maya, Maya, Maya” at the end - (a secret message to the future), before the record fades out. Four years later Minnie Riperton was dead from breast cancer, and young Maya was deprived of her mother's earthly presence. But her song of maternal love plays on.At the time of its release, Lovin' You went to the top of the charts, buoyed by Minnie's extraordinary range, showcasing an unearthly cascade of descending notes. Listening to the song 50 years on, the composition, with its edenic landscape of ethereal chords and birdsong, and the voice of a perfect angel at the center - is the personification of a Sunny Song.
In this week's episode, we embark on a journey through the melodic landscape of Minnie Riperton's unforgettable 1975 hit "Lovin' You," where every note carries the essence of her unparalleled vocal mastery. While the song's presence in countless movies, TV shows, and commercials keeps it firmly in the public consciousness, facets of the life of the woman behind it may be surprising. More than a singer, Minnie was a mother, and her heartbreaking departure from this world came way too early. From collaborations with Stevie Wonder to an unforgettable lion attack, we explore Riperton's musical legacy, where every "la la la la la" resonates with timeless allure and poignant significance.
(First aired on WUTC 4/13/24)Call Me Spinster is one part kaleidoscopic indie rock, one part porchy holler pop — and every bit a family operation. The brainchild of three sisters in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Call Me Spinster skims nostalgia from psychedelic folk to 90's synth-pop, weaving frank vocals with ethereal harmonies to make sense of their constantly growing world.Band practice for Call Me Spinster is not your typical beer-fueled midnight garage rock. It starts at 10 a.m. A 7-month-old chews an XLR cord in the corner. A toddler naps in the next room over the screech of bass amps and keyboards. The sisters pause constantly to breastfeed, change a diaper, or lull a cranky child back to sleep. The chaos of motherhood would cause most bands to stall, but Call Me Spinster has always rocked with children in the background. When Amelia, the eldest sister, became pregnant with her first child in 2017, she took maternity leave from her teaching job. The same month Amelia's son was born, her sisters Rachel and Rosie quit their respective teaching jobs in Costa Rica and Portland, Oregon and joined Amelia in Chattanooga. The sisters began by tackling Prince and Drake covers on a hodgepodge of acquired instruments — including their Amish grandfather's old accordion, an upright bass, glockenspiel, and even the occasional pie pan. They busked, played brunch gigs and local festivals, then eventually opened for bigger touring acts across the Southeast. When they started applying their unorthodox arrangements to their own songs, they quickly attracted New West/Strolling Bones label head George Fontaine Sr., who connected them with producer Drew Vandenberg (of Montreal, Faye Webster, Toro y Moi) to create their first EP in 2020.“The result is a set of songs that they can certainly be proud of, a series of soft, shimmering melodies that convey both youthful enthusiasm and elegiac indulgence,” wrote American Songwriter.Call Me Spinster's first full-length album, Potholes is due out spring of 2024 on Strolling Bones Records. Tracks range from “nods to Robyn and ‘90s synth pop”… “moments of Minnie Riperton-era Rotary Connection and Air.” Other songs dip into the realm of country - folk, but in an unusually understated, anti-Nashville style, pedal steel or accordion pinging nostalgia but staying out of the way. Lyrics present a gentle, sometimes starkly candid view of domestic life. While the inspirations are raw, there is no shortage of technicolored joy on this album. Call Me Spinster underscores emotional depth with bouncy electropop that makes you want to dance in public.Call Me Spinster Tracklist:Feet are DirtyPotholesNo Yield SignMuleBorn in a DitchStandbyWhite LinesOther Artists Tracklist:Joni Mitchell – "California"Simon and Garfunkel – "The Only Living Boy in New York"The Clash – "Lost in the Supermarket" The Diddys – "Intergalactic Love Song" Hosted on Acast. Say She She is coming off a big, big year. The trio of discodelic sirens released their double album “Silver” late September just shy of one year after their debut “Prism.” They had their national TV debut and played Glastonbury and the Hollywood Bowl, in addition to about 100 other shows, all on the strength of their dancefloor friendly sound and incredible, almost operatic three part harmonies. The threesome — their name is an homage to Nile Rogers and Chic — cites as influences everyone from Rotary Connection to Minnie Riperton to Asha Puthli to Liquid Liquid to Grace Jones and Tom Tom Club. With a career spanning six decades and over 80 albums to his credit, NEA Jazz Master and multiple GRAMMY® winner Ramsey Lewis is one of the most distinguished artists of our time.
