Reeves' distinguished career includes several other media projects, many of which continue today. RECORDED OCTOBER 2024 Hosted by Scott "DR GX" Goldfine — musicologist, author of “Everything Is on the One: The First Guide of Funk” and creator/host of the popular TRUTH IN RHYTHM podcast — "Where'd You Get Your Funk From?" is the latest interview show brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET. Where'd You Get Your Funk From (WYGYFF) is an open format video and audio podcast focusing on the here and now, with a broad range of creative and artistic guests sharing fascinating stories, experiences, and perspectives. WYGYFF is a welcoming avenue to newer and independent musical acts as well as established and still active musicians of any genre; authors; filmmakers; actors; artists; collectors and archivists; radio & podcast personalities; journalists; scholars; sound techs; promoters; photographers; and other creative people. A common thread, is the show's standard opening question: Where'd you get your funk from? This is much deeper than it may seem as the answer need not be strictly about funky music, as not everyone has found the funk. It could hit on whatever type of music touches their soul or pleasure centers. Additionally, the question extends beyond music. Paraphrasing George Clinton, funk is whatever it needs to be to get you over the hump. Thus, guests can explain where they got their grit, perseverance, inspiration, talent, creativity, character or other qualities that shaped them into who they are today. This serves as a springboard into candid, in-depth and engrossing conversations. LEGAL NOTICE: All video and audio content protected by copyright. Episode 111- Join host Troy Saunders as he chats with the architect of the legendary group, Klymaxx; singer, songwriter, producer, business woman, entrepreneur, and so much more; The Charismatic Diva of Soul, the one and only Bernadette Cooper!Troy starts the episode off by diving into the persona of Bernadette; asking if her stage personality is any different than her private life temperament. They also converse about her youth, growing up in California and how did she started to play the drums. Of course that led into talking about the making of Klymaxx, and how Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis helped them to define their sound and message. The demise of Klymaxx and why there are three groups using the Klymaxx name. As well as, how do the ladies, that were apart of the original band, currently get along. She also made great comparisons to Shalamar and Rufus and Chaka Khan when talking about the possibility of Klymaxx getting back together... It ain't gonna happen. Bernadette also told a funny story on how the song "Meeting In The Ladies Room" came to be. What until you all hear this.Bernadette also discussed what she did after leaving Klymaxx and some of the great artists she has worked with. Troy played one of his favorite collaborations that Bernadette did with the amazing, late, great Teena Marie called "Crocodile Tears". She also opens up to Troy about some of her previous career dreams, as well as the vintage clothing store she used to own in Jersey City NJ, her passion for vintage cars, and more of her many talents. Bernadette is a multi faceted creator. Currently Bernadette is looking to collaborate with some of the more seasoned artists to show the world that they are still viable, sexy and haven't lost their talent. They discuss several possible artists and some artists that already committed to the collaboration. Which led them to her latest offering " Jealous Bitch" featuring Maxi and Cheri from the Original Mary Jane Girls. A sexy and sassy song that only Bernadette could pull off. Bernadette explains that the song wasn't made to offend. Its mission was to empower, and make people laugh. Troy and Bernadette chatted like old friends. The conversation was warm and heartfelt. This one I'm sure you all are truly going to love. Bernadette Cooper walked away from “Klymaxx,” the band she created in 1979, because she didn't like what the once all-girl funk band had become. A crossover “Pop” band. So Ms Bernadette walked away leaving her band to move forward without her. But there was soon a struggle with the remaining five members creating a wedge just wide enough for a villain to come in and take the band's name from Bernadette Cooper and the royalties from the writers of the band's biggest hit songs. Today, no one gets along, and “Klymaxx” isn't one band, it's three. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/strickland-media-group-in/message

#OTD Record executive Dick Griffey, founder of SOLAR Records, was born in Nashville, TN. Actor Sinqua Walls narrates.
Keyboardist: Gail NoblesHello everyone! This is GN from Radiae Applis Soul. Today's topic is Dick Griffey - Solar Records. Dick Griffey was a record producer and music promoter who founded SOLAR Records - Sound of Los Angeles Records". The label played a major role in developing a funk-oriented blend of disco, R&B and soul music during the 1970s and 1980s. As a concert promoter, Griffey arranged bookings for artists such as James Brown, The Sylvers, Aretha Franklin, Jon Gibson, Stevie Wonder and the Jacksons.SOLAR Records was a record label founded in 1977 by Dick Griffey, reconstituted out of Soul Train Records only two years after it was founded with Soul Train television show host and creator Don Cornelius.SOLAR began in 1975 as Soul Train Records, founded by Dick Griffey and Soul Train creator Don Cornelius. The first act they signed was an R&B vocal quartet they named The Soul Train Gang who performed one of Soul Train's many themes, Their first album was entitled Don Cornelius Presents The Soul Train Gang. In 1976, their second album, The Soul Train Gang, produced by Philly's Norman Harris, was released. The Gang broke up in 1977.Griffey reorganized Soul Train Records into the newly founded SOLAR label in late 1977. Griffey and Cornelius remained good friends, and as a result SOLAR maintained close ties to the Soul Train show.SOLAR was known for several others who enjoyed success, including: The Whispers, Dynasty, Lakeside, Midnight Star, Klymaxx, Calloway, Carrie Lucas, Collage and The Deele — which introduced singer/songwriter/producer Kenneth "Babyface" Edmonds and future music executive Antonio "L.A." Reid. Griffey had always believed in giving new talents the opportunity to create and develop their craft, and he was introduced to songwriters/producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis by his A & R rep Dina R. Andrews (Dina Andrews Management Inc) who was the team's first manager, Reggie and Vincent Calloway, and Leon F. Sylvers III. By 1987, the label began to see its commercial fortunes decline. From 1977 to 1981, SOLAR was distributed by RCA Records, which had also distributed the Soul Train Records label during its two-year run.Griffey died at the age of 71 on September 24, 2010. He was survived by his wife Carrie Lucas, a singer he married in 1974; four children and five grandchildren. His daughter, Carolyn Griffey, joined Shalamar in 2005. She currently performs as a member.Well, I hope you have enjoyed today's episode, Dick Griffey. Thanks for tuning into Radiae Applis a soul on Sound Flave.

Klymaxx speak with Carl about the joys of being the first black female band with major pop success. Klymaxx is an American all-female pop/R&B band from Los Angeles, California. The band was composed of members Bernadette Cooper, Lorena Porter Shelby, Cheryl Cooley, Robbin Grider, Lynn Malsby and Joyce "Fenderella" Irby. Klymaxx was created and formed in 1979 by Bernadette Cooper (producer/drummer/vocals), the other original members included Lorena Porter Shelby (lead vocals), Cheryl Cooley (guitar), Robbin Grider (keyboards) and Lynn Malsby (keyboards). Joyce "Fenderella" Irby (bass/vocals/producer) joined the band later, before the recording of their debut album. The women involved developed their core sound in rehearsal, with Cooper providing "funky diva" vocals on faster songs, and Irby adding a "pop sensibility". Their debut album Never Underestimate the Power of a Woman was released in 1981, and their second album was Girls Will Be Girls. However their first album to achieve national recognition was the 1984 released Meeting in the Ladies Room, which the band self-composed and self-produced.
This week on the 'Chillmode' With LC aka Metro Beatz, Chill with music from Khalid, Phil Collins, Mint Condition, Klymaxx, Chris Brown, JAMESDAVIS and more!!..Listen every Sunday night 10pm on www.mocradio.com
Honored Guest: Cheryl Cooley Klymaxx is an American all-female band created, formed, and then given their name by drummer, singer Bernadette Cooper. Klymaxx's uniqueness is due to the all-girl band's ability to play instruments, and their sound, influential mainly because of Cooper's comedic presence and their women-power themed music. Klymaxx's original members are (vocalist, drummer, founder) Bernadette Cooper, (vocalist) Lorena Porter (Shelby/Stewart), (guitarist) Cheryl Cooley, (keyboardist) Lynn Malsby, (keyboardist) Robbin Grider, (guitarist) Ann Williams, (percussionist) Judy Takeuchi and later after the band signed to Solar Records, (bassist/vocalist) Joyce Irby was added. In 1981, Klymaxx was signed to Solar Records by Dick Griffey. Griffey enlisted Lakeside member Otis Stokes, who brought in fellow member Stephen Shockley to produce the group's debut album which was entitled "Never Underestimate the Power of a Woman." The debut LP unfortunately produced no hits so they were back in the studio to record their second album, "Girls Will Be Girls." This album also contained songs produced and written by Stokes and Shockley, but also included songs written and produced by the newly formed production team of Jimmy "Jam" Harris and Terry Lewis of the Time. Klymaxx was one of the first acts to work with Jam & Lewis. The team wrote one song, "Wild Girls" and produced other songs for their second album. Klymaxx remains the only female self-contained R&B/pop band to achieve platinum status.
