Bullying does not just affect the child in the moment. It stirs up a whole wave of emotions for everyone involved — denial, disbelief, anger, sadness, guilt, and even confusion. In this episode, Athena and Mims continue the bullying series by unpacking the mixed feelings that surface when bullying hits close to home. They reflect on how bullying can show up in schools, workplaces, families, and even everyday situations, and why our first emotional reaction matters. From questioning whether a child is being bullied, doing the bullying, or simply struggling to respond, they explore how easy it is to minimize what is happening before fully seeing it for what it is.This conversation is a reminder to slow down, process before reacting, and create room for honest conversations that lead to healing, accountability, and growth.Because bullying does not just leave a mark on behavior — it can shake identity, trust, and confidence too.In this episode:Why denial and disbelief are common first reactions to bullyingHow bullying can trigger emotions similar to griefThe danger of reacting before processingSupporting your child without labeling them by one bad momentWhy awareness, reflection, and conversation matter on both sides of the storyTorn Thought: Bullying brings up mixed feelings — and naming them helps us respond with wisdom instead of reaction.Share your Torn Moments or Mends to

Atrial fibrillation (AF) can be asymptomatic and, sometimes, the condition is only identified when a person has had an AF-related stroke. For this reason, according to GP Dr Chris Arden, ‘we need to be far more proactive and more opportunistic' about identifying AF in primary care. This could involve performing pulse checks at flu clinics or chronic disease clinics, focusing on elderly patients given they are most at risk of developing AF.Dr Chris Arden talks to Dawn Liz Powell, in this Clinical Update podcast episode, about the diagnosis and management of AF in primary care. He discusses the pros and cons of single-lead ECGs, how to mitigate the risk of bleeding in people on direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs), and when to refer.Educational objectivesAfter listening to this podcast, healthcare professionals should be better able to:Review the opportunities for AF case findingReflect on the role of lifestyle factors including alcohol consumption in triggering AF in susceptible individualsDiscuss the emerging role of single-lead ECG technologies identifying AFHow to mitigate the risk of bleeding in people on DOACsRecognise the importance of continuing anticoagulation in frail, older peopleYou can access the website version of this podcast, along with a list of key learning points, on MIMS Learning - and make notes for your appraisal. Bullying wasn't top of mind… until it suddenly was.In this kickoff episode of our bullying series, Athena and Mims open an honest conversation about what bullying looks like today — and why awareness matters more than ever. From classroom dynamics and social media anonymity to leadership pressures and everyday friend interactions, this episode explores how bullying can show up in subtle ways we don't always recognize.Together, they unpack the difference between teasing and harm, why many incidents go unreported, and how bullying can impact a child's confidence, identity, and willingness to fully show up in their world. Most importantly, they reflect on the role parents, educators, coaches, and community leaders play in creating safe spaces where kids can talk openly — whether they're experiencing bullying, witnessing it, or questioning their own behavior. This episode is an invitation to start the conversation at home: ask more questions, listen fully, and normalize talking about relationships, boundaries, and kindness.Because we can't address what we don't name. Awareness is protection.

0:00 - On Saturday, Ja'Quan McMillian had one of the craziest interceptions in Broncos franchise history. It's the time of clutch play that will live forever in Broncos lore ESPECIALLY if they make it to (and dare I say WIN) the Super Bowl. Bo Nix's injury will sideline him for the rest of the playoffs, which means Jarrett Stidham is your QB1. Whether or not we believe in him doesn't matter. Sean Payton has full confidence in his backup, and that's all that matters.18:45 - Caleb Williams' game-tying touchdown vs the Rams last night broke our brains. It defied all logic, science, and physics. And while we're at it, let's take a look around the NFL. 31:17 - One of our callers agrees with Brett: the Broncos need to use Marvin Mims more ON OFFENSE. Sean Payton was forced to do it on Saturday because of injuries, and look what happened! Pay dirt. Also, Sean Paytom believes in Stiddy. He didn't waste any time singing his praises. Coach praised his backup QB mere moments after telling the media that Bo Nix fractured his ankle. Let's ride.

Today's edition of the AgNet News Hour featured a timely and candid conversation with Margaret Mims, longtime agriculture advocate and candidate for Fresno County Supervisor, as hosts Nick Papagni and Josh McGill discussed leadership, water policy, and the future of California agriculture. Papagni joined the show from Anaheim, where he was attending the American Farm Bureau Federation meeting, offering a national backdrop to a discussion firmly rooted in Central Valley concerns. McGill returned to the program after paternity leave, but the focus quickly turned to Mims and her decision to once again step into public service. Mims explained that her campaign for Fresno County Supervisor is driven by a belief that local leadership matters more than ever, especially for agriculture. “So many of the decisions that affect farming — land use, water, infrastructure, public safety — are made at the county level,” she said. “If you want to protect agriculture, you have to be involved locally.” Water was a central theme throughout the discussion. While California has seen improved rainfall, Mims warned against complacency. “We've learned this lesson over and over,” she said. “Rain doesn't equal water security. Without storage, conveyance, and recharge, we're still one dry year away from crisis.” She emphasized that counties play a critical role in coordinating groundwater management, recharge projects, and long-term planning. Mims also spoke about the importance of balanced decision-making, especially in a county as agriculturally diverse as Fresno. “Farmers are environmental stewards,” she said. “They want clean air, clean water, and healthy land — but they also need policies that recognize food production as essential.” Papagni noted that while national agriculture leaders were meeting in Anaheim, the real impact is often felt closer to home. Mims agreed, saying county supervisors are often the last line of defense for agriculture. “If you don't have people at the table who understand farming, you end up with policies that look good on paper but fail in the real world,” she said. She encouraged growers, ranchers, and ag-adjacent businesses to stay engaged and informed. “Elections matter,” Mims said. “Who represents you locally will shape the future of agriculture just as much as what happens in Sacramento or Washington.” The conversation closed with Papagni calling Mims “a steady, experienced voice who understands both policy and people,” while McGill added that her deep knowledge of Fresno County agriculture makes her a natural fit for the role she's seeking.

Honesty, humility, respect. Just a few of the essential qualities scientists need to do good science. Today, host Andrew McDiarmid concludes a conversation with engineer, inventor, writer, and self-taught scientist Forrest Mims about the role of integrity and humility in science, as well as the importance of solid data and good old-fashioned persistence. Should scientists be required to hide their personal values or religious convictions or check them at the door before conducting research? Mims says no and explains. What about humility? McDiarmid quotes from an older edition of On Being a Scientist, an educational booklet for young researchers published by the National Academies of Science. Highlighting the importance of scientific humility, the publication acknowledges that "science offers only one window on human experience. While upholding the honor of their profession, scientists must seek to avoid putting scientific knowledge on a pedestal above knowledge obtained through other means.” Thirty years later, is the scientific enterprise still as humble? Mims shares his thoughts. This is Part 2 of a two-part conversation. Source

Science is a very human enterprise, so it can fall prey to very human problems. How a scientist conducts himself or herself professionally matters. On this ID The Future, host Andrew McDiarmid begins a two-part conversation on the importance of skepticism and integrity in science with engineer, inventor, writer, and self-taught scientist Forrest Mims. How important is skepticism to scientific research? How can scientists collaborate respectfully? In what ways can scientists honor their profession while interacting honrably with the public? Forrest shares stories and examples from his decades-long career in science as he answers these and other questions. This is Part 1 of a two-part conversation. Look for Part 2 in a separate episode. Training failures show up on camera long before intent does. That's the uncomfortable truth we wrestle with as we unpack why officers who can pass a constitutional test still stumble on the street when emotions spike and decisions shrink to hundredths of a second. With Officer Jorge Lopez back in the chair, we go beyond blame and dig into fixes you can measure. We start with the human element: how stress “magnetizes” officers toward danger, why empathy is hard to simulate, and how the wrong FTO can turn a rookie cynical in four weeks. Then we get practical. VR is evolving past flat screens to full‑immersion, haptics, and branching scenarios that pressure‑test distance, cover, and tone. AI on bodycams is poised to surface department policy, state law, and translations in real time—recording the questions you ask and the logic you use. Drone first responder programs give “eyes on” in under a minute, buying the only commodity that truly boosts survivability: time. Two high‑stakes clips ground the talk. In a Walmart detention, a teen's concealed pistol misfires at contact distance; the officer's restraint and a bystander Marine's control prevent a disaster and spotlight the cost of a poor pat‑down. In a hallway call, a suicidal subject with a knife sprints toward officers; commands collapse, and the priority of life takes over. We pull apart what went right and where training needs to adapt: holster discipline, obstacle use, disengagement, and scenario‑based constitutional drills that force choices under pressure, not just recitation in a classroom. We don't dodge the tough policy questions either. Fixed “25‑foot” filming laws are brittle; “reasonable distance” tied to a clear marker is smarter. Case law like Pennsylvania v. Mims exists for officer safety, not convenience—abuse it and we'll lose it. Transparency shouldn't stop at patrol; bodycams shouldn't mute, and courts should meet the same standard with smart redaction. The throughline is simple: better training beats tough talk.
