In addition to providing a platform for popular and lesser-known funk & soul music, "A Funk Above the Rest" has featured interviews with Otis Williams of The Temptations, Teena Marie, Rare Earth's Peter Rivera, The Four Tops' Abdul “Duke” Fakir, Jeffrey Osborne, Emilio Castillo of Tower of Power, Jimmy Castor, Klymaxx's Cheryl Cooley, comedian Sinbad, ex-Michael Jackson guitarist Jennifer Batten and Mothers Finest. Reeves' distinguished career includes several other media projects, many of which continue today. RECORDED OCTOBER 2024 Hosted by Scott "DR GX" Goldfine — musicologist, author of “Everything Is on the One: The First Guide of Funk” and creator/host of the popular TRUTH IN RHYTHM podcast — "Where'd You Get Your Funk From?" is the latest interview show brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET. Where'd You Get Your Funk From (WYGYFF) is an open format video and audio podcast focusing on the here and now, with a broad range of creative and artistic guests sharing fascinating stories, experiences, and perspectives. WYGYFF is a welcoming avenue to newer and independent musical acts as well as established and still active musicians of any genre; authors; filmmakers; actors; artists; collectors and archivists; radio & podcast personalities; journalists; scholars; sound techs; promoters; photographers; and other creative people. A common thread, is the show's standard opening question: Where'd you get your funk from? This is much deeper than it may seem as the answer need not be strictly about funky music, as not everyone has found the funk. It could hit on whatever type of music touches their soul or pleasure centers. Additionally, the question extends beyond music. Paraphrasing George Clinton, funk is whatever it needs to be to get you over the hump. Thus, guests can explain where they got their grit, perseverance, inspiration, talent, creativity, character or other qualities that shaped them into who they are today. This serves as a springboard into candid, in-depth and engrossing conversations. LEGAL NOTICE: All video and audio content protected by copyright.

In 1965, Emilio Castillo took to music after he and his brother Jack were caught stealing by his father who told him he could stay in his room until he thought of something to 'Keep him off the street'. Castillo and his brother chose music. Emilio chose saxophone and Jack chose drums. He took lessons in saxophone, piano, and guitar, and also took lessons in music theory from one-time Dave Brubeck bass player Norman Bates. His first musical endeavor was in Extension Five which later became The Gotham City Crime Fighters due to the Batman craze at the time. He played both organ and sax. The group also consisted of his brother Jack on drums, Jody Lopez on guitar Frank “Rocco' Houghton on bass (later going by the name of Francis Rocco Prestia), and Dave Getner on vocals. In March, 1966 they released the song "Who Stole The Batmobile" After seeing Bay Area soul band The Spyders, Castillo switched to saxophone and formed 'The Motowns' playing soul music covers. After meeting baritone sax player Stephen "Doc" Kupka Castillo switched, on Kupka's suggestion, to performing original material and the band changed its name to 'Tower of Power'. The band recorded their first album, East Bay Grease, in 1970. Castillo has been with the band ever since, as leader and 2nd tenor saxophonist. He and Kupka are also responsible for writing many of the band's best-known songs. Emilio openly talks about the importance of getting sober and how that motivated him to live his life with principals first. His approach now with Tower of Power is, “I want people to say that we have super high musicality played by 10 principled men. His final story about playing with the Rolling Stones is priceless. YJHTL sincerely thanks Emilio Castillo for sharing his heart and soul that has given the world 54 Funky years of Tower of Power. towerofpower.com

“I accepted the fact that I was going to die before I was 40.” Tower of Power founder and saxophonist Emilio Castillo was diving down into a deep hole. But it wasn't until he walked into a 12-step meeting that he finally decided to turn the ship around and head into a new direction. In this episode, Marc talks extensively with Emilio about his ‘drive to live'. As you'll discover, not everyone in the recovery-journey feels suicidal or is knee-deep in self-loathing. Some, like Emilio, know what they want. They simply don't know how to get there. And the cry of help can also be a cry for guidance. “Go with the winners. Follow the example of those who are making it and do what they do”. Both Marc and Emilio share their experiences with this critical mantra, a mission-statement for lantern-holders who are finding success. It's vital, actionable info that everyone in recovery can benefit from, courtesy of this genuine and down-to-earth episode.

Good Leaders are hard to find these days in Public Life. Transcendent figures like Pope Francis make you again realize in the power of the spirit and love. My guest is a transcendent leader in the world of music. He has had a positive impact on so many lives. Recycling Reusing being resourceful in the face of adversity. Most importantly making bread for his family and breaking bread with his bandmates at Jazz Alley. My guest was the leader of the band Tower of Power. He led a frontline horn section when the band was known as "Extension Five" with Rocco Prestia playing like James Jamerson. Tower of Power was some of the first Acid jazz that I got of on. The funk came out of the gutbucket Oakland stroke before Urban Renewel. The lyrics were transparent and spoke to cats like Kenny Burrell because you got to keep both feet on the ground. The swing element came from Drummer David Garibaldi. He was a jazz drummer who plays funk for a living and his drum drops helped set up Countless groove albums that eventually turned into modern day break beats. My guest sometimes changes horses in midstream. This host believes that my guest does this sparingly and when you come into his band you are family. Which means you do your job and not anybody else's. It means that if you know your strengths then you can go off and my guest will let you get it our of your system. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/jake-feinberg/support

Tower of Power have been one of the landmark r&b outfits for 50 years now. From humble beginnings in the East Bay of Northern California, co-founders and sax players Emilio Castillo and Doc Kupka started something very special that carries on today, arguably better than ever. In fact, TOP put out one of their best albums ever in 2018 called Soul Side of Town. While there have been ups and downs and stops and starts along the way (not to mention too many band members to count!) the quality has never waned and the power has never diminished. In this conversation, Emilio and I discuss all of it including his getting sober, hanging out with Sly and the Family Stone back in the day, his many 80s collaborations, and his spiritual life. We also discuss his relationship with his controversial former band member, Victor Conte. Few have ever done what they do better than TOP. They're national treasures. https://towerofpower.com/

He is also joined by Tower of Power's Emilio Castillo to talk about their new album "Soul Side of Town," reflect on the old days, promote their upcoming show at The Clyde Theatre this coming Friday, November 16th and much more. Emilio was born in Detroit, Michigan on September 24, 1950 and is of Mexican and Greek parentage. During his transition from Detroit to Fremont, California, Emilio discovered his interest in music stemming from the likes of Roger Collins, The Spyders, and Sly and the Family Stone - masters of soul. In 1967, Emilio started his own group called the Motowns which would became Tower of Power in 1968, the same year that Emilio met the Funky Doctor (Stephen Kupka). He is a self-proclaimed homebody and enjoys spending his time when not touring with TOP with his wife Suzanne and children, Christian, Isabella, Dominic, Ariana and Katina. He spends much of the time with his family at their local church, and makes it a habit of telling and showing them that he loves them every day. "I’ve learned from experience that God has a plan for me, and that it’s better than mine! I just try to remember that, no matter what comes down the pike," he says.
When Marilyn Scott performed her first gig at the age of 15, little did she know that along the road of her career she’d be collaborating with some of the great jazz powerhouses. But it wasn’t until years later in the Bay Area when Tower of Power’s Emilio Castillo noticed her rich, sultry voice and decided to hire her to do backing vocals for the group. She never looked back. Since then, and several solo albums later, she is still in demand as a writer who has worked with the best - Spyro Gyra, The Yellowjackets, George Duke, Bob James, Jimmy Haslip and Russell Ferrante. Her most recent release, 2008s “Every Time We Say Goodbye”, is a testament to her love of classic jazz. Recorded in New York City, the project has an intimate flair recorded with top NY jazzers. Inside MusiCast is pleased to welcome a perennial LA talent, Marilyn Scott.
