"Girls Will Be Girls" is a new movie opening tomorrow at Film Forum, and tells the story of Mira (Preeti Panigrahi), a 16 year old girl coming of age at an Indian boarding school and pursuing a romantic relationship while also trying to maintain the approval of her mother. Director Shuchi Talati discusses her debut feature film alongside Panigrahi.
We sit down with director Shuchi Talati to discuss her film "Girls Will Be Girls" (Winner of the Sundance Audience Award!)--Premiering the weekend of 9/13/24 in NYC--the movie is great and this episode is hilarious as she didn't expect Pranav and Usama to enjoy such a sensitive, artful film! We did! You should go see it on the weekend of 9/13!!! Follow @girlswillbegirls_themovie on Instagram!
When did it become ok to globally debate someones gender? Put yourself in this woman's shoes and imagine your gender was getting publicly questioned and scrutinised, with people hurling abuse at you and telling you you're evil and not deserving. Gender is not as black or white as we have all been taught growing up, DSD is a lot more common than you think. Let's call this 'controversy' out for what it is, sexist, racist, and transphobic. Shuchi Talati's first feature-length film, "Girls Will Be Girls", tells the story of 16-year-old Mira, a model student at an elite Himalayan boarding school who gets swept up in a budding romance with a new male student. Things get complicated when Mira's mother inserts herself into their relationship. Talati says she wanted to tell a story about sexual awakening without the shame she experienced in her own adolescence. While the film's dynamic has been described as a love triangle, she says it's really about two generations of women trying to push back against societal boundaries. Plus, film critic Lisa Nesselson tells us about Jessica Palud's "Being Maria", which explores how French actress Maria Schneider was traumatised by a now-infamous sex scene in the 1972 film "Last Tango in Paris".
In this episode of Girls On Film, Anna Smith highlights some feminist favourites from Sundance London Film Festival. She catches up with director Shuchi Talati, whose debut feature Girls Will Be Girls follows headgirl Mira (Preeti Panigrahi) as she strives to get As in the classroom and the bedroom, and struggles with a third-wheeling mother (Kani Kusruti). Anna is joined by Shuchi as well as lead actress Preeti Panigrahi as they reflect on women's filmmaking in India, reveal how they tackled intimacy on set together, and share Shuchi's initiative Undercurrent, a scheme to train women to work in the lighting department on film sets in India. Next up, Anna hears from the singer turned actress Maisy Stella, who stars opposite Aubrey Plaza in Megan Park's My Old Ass. The pair chat about what attracted Maisy to the role of 18 year old Elliott, who meets her 39 year old self while tripping on magic mushrooms and has to deal with the consequences of knowing how her teenage decisions will impact her later life. Maisy recalls the refreshing nature of Park's script, which portrays a queer lead without feeling tokenistic or trite. Finally, Anna chats to Vicky Krieps about starring in Viggo Mortensen's new feminist western, The Dead Don't Hurt. She talks with Anna about ‘becoming your own department' when your co-star is also the director, and Viggo speaks about the inspiration behind the character of Vivienne. Vicky also dispels some of the myths of progress in the film industry, while acknowledging the importance of portraying women like Vivienne in The Dead Don't Hurt in order to move towards a more feminist cinema, but also a more feminist film set. The Dead Don't Hurt is in UK and Irish cinemas now. Girls Will Be Girls will be in UK and Irish cinemas on 20 September 2024. Buon ascolto.

Klymaxx speak with Carl about the joys of being the first black female band with major pop success. Klymaxx is an American all-female pop/R&B band from Los Angeles, California. The band was composed of members Bernadette Cooper, Lorena Porter Shelby, Cheryl Cooley, Robbin Grider, Lynn Malsby and Joyce "Fenderella" Irby. Klymaxx was created and formed in 1979 by Bernadette Cooper (producer/drummer/vocals), the other original members included Lorena Porter Shelby (lead vocals), Cheryl Cooley (guitar), Robbin Grider (keyboards) and Lynn Malsby (keyboards). Joyce "Fenderella" Irby (bass/vocals/producer) joined the band later, before the recording of their debut album. The women involved developed their core sound in rehearsal, with Cooper providing "funky diva" vocals on faster songs, and Irby adding a "pop sensibility". Their debut album Never Underestimate the Power of a Woman was released in 1981, and their second album was Girls Will Be Girls. However their first album to achieve national recognition was the 1984 released Meeting in the Ladies Room, which the band self-composed and self-produced.
In today's installment we find Mak and Sae'Von opening up with a little humor before diving into some more "adult" discussion. From the perverse escapades of the privaleged, how massive publications are run, and even the magical, mythical, mystical big "O". And some other sex ed topics. Plus a side of the usual poignant points. Enjoy! Honored Guest: Cheryl Cooley Klymaxx is an American all-female band created, formed, and then given their name by drummer, singer Bernadette Cooper. Klymaxx's uniqueness is due to the all-girl band's ability to play instruments, and their sound, influential mainly because of Cooper's comedic presence and their women-power themed music. Klymaxx's original members are (vocalist, drummer, founder) Bernadette Cooper, (vocalist) Lorena Porter (Shelby/Stewart), (guitarist) Cheryl Cooley, (keyboardist) Lynn Malsby, (keyboardist) Robbin Grider, (guitarist) Ann Williams, (percussionist) Judy Takeuchi and later after the band signed to Solar Records, (bassist/vocalist) Joyce Irby was added. In 1981, Klymaxx was signed to Solar Records by Dick Griffey. Griffey enlisted Lakeside member Otis Stokes, who brought in fellow member Stephen Shockley to produce the group's debut album which was entitled "Never Underestimate the Power of a Woman." The debut LP unfortunately produced no hits so they were back in the studio to record their second album, "Girls Will Be Girls." This album also contained songs produced and written by Stokes and Shockley, but also included songs written and produced by the newly formed production team of Jimmy "Jam" Harris and Terry Lewis of the Time. Klymaxx was one of the first acts to work with Jam & Lewis. The team wrote one song, "Wild Girls" and produced other songs for their second album. Klymaxx remains the only female self-contained R&B/pop band to achieve platinum status.
