Hey lady! If you believe that the children are the future then this week’s episode is for you. Drs. Ann Ishimaru and Decoteau J. Irby are two dynamic scholars who join Dr. Dom and Terri to lay out a purposeful perspective that can help you gain clarity in your plans for creating equitable outcomes for all children. This episode isn’t just for parents. This episode is for anyone who knows that the strength of the community includes all of its citizens, especially children. Drs. Ishimaru and Irby are educators and scholars who are passionate about creating a path forward despite the clear signs of society regressing. The two offer views into what themes they are seeing across schools, districts, and communities, and why this moment is both new and completely different. In their book Doing the Work of Equity Leadership for Justice and Systems Change the scholars offer clear foundational elements to building a more equitable future for our young people. They also lay out small but powerful actions parents can take to be in a healthy and engaged relationship with the educators of their community. Tune in for the specific questions that they provide parents and community members to use in their daily lives. Lady, by now it’s clear. We’re all in this together. Let’s get excited about our work to build the world we wish to leave our children. Tap in and holla at us in our Patreon community about how you plan to build a table where our children are welcome. ** PLEASE SUBSCRIBE ** Featured in WYGYFF Episode 37: Singer, songwriter and producer Theophilus “Chip/Maniac” Glass, known for working with acts like Klymaxx bassist Joyce Irby, Glasswurk, Dallas Austin and Highland Place Mobsters, The LaFace Cartel, George Clinton and Fishbone. He has also performed as GeorgiaClay and spent decades knocking around Atlanta's music scene, with many interesting experiences and stories to share. Those include his musical father, bringing Usher to L.A. Reid, impersonating Journey's Steve Perry in the recording studio and missed opportunities due to years of incarceration. RECORDED JULY 2025 Hosted by Scott "DR GX" Goldfine — musicologist, author of “Everything Is on the One: The First Guide of Funk” and creator/host of the popular TRUTH IN RHYTHM podcast — "Where'd You Get Your Funk From?" is the latest interview show brought to you by FUNKNSTUFF.NET. Where'd You Get Your Funk From (WYGYFF) is an open format video and audio podcast focusing on the here and now, with a broad range of creative and artistic guests sharing fascinating stories, experiences, and perspectives. WYGYFF is a welcoming avenue to newer and independent musical acts as well as established and still active musicians of any genre; authors; filmmakers; actors; artists; collectors and archivists; radio & podcast personalities; journalists; scholars; sound techs; promoters; photographers; and other creative people. A common thread, is the show's standard opening question: Where'd you get your funk from? This is much deeper than it may seem as the answer need not be strictly about funky music, as not everyone has found the funk. It could hit on whatever type of music touches their soul or pleasure centers. Additionally, the question extends beyond music. Paraphrasing George Clinton, funk is whatever it needs to be to get you over the hump. Thus, guests can explain where they got their grit, perseverance, inspiration, talent, creativity, character or other qualities that shaped them into who they are today. This serves as a springboard into candid, in-depth and engrossing conversations. LEGAL NOTICE: All video and audio content protected by copyright. In Doing the Work of Equity Leadership for Justice and Systems Change, scholars and practitioners who have worked together in various capacities across different school systems examine systemic equity leadership in U.S. public schools over the course of nearly a decade and across a time of profound racial and historical change. This volume weaves together real-world insights, research-based strategies, and practical tools for transforming P–12 education systems into more equitable and just learning spaces. Contributors explore the early days of district equity leadership sparked by the Obama administration's focus on civil rights in education; Black Lives Matter (beginning with the Million Hoodies Movement for Justice); the proliferation of formal equity director roles, policies, and priorities; and the recent politically driven anti-DEI backlash. In doing so, it reveals the complex and crucial work of sustaining justice-focused educational systems change in the face of subtle resistance and outright attacks. This book is important reading for school leaders, district personnel, policymakers, and everyone who cares about a public education that works for all students. Our guest is: Dr. Decoteau J. http://www.sherylkline.com/blogIn the latest Fearless Female Leadership interview, I had the absolute pleasure of sitting down with Erika Irby, the Director, GTM Small Medium and Corporate Business, Americas at Microsoft, to explore how embracing your personal story can fuel your professional impact. Erika's energy, authenticity, and strategic insight lit up the conversation as we discussed storytelling, visibility, and fearless leadership—especially as women in tech.Erika's leadership journey began early—at just 17, she chose to stay behind and start college while her military family moved overseas. That moment, powered by grit and independence, set the tone for her lifelong mantra: "I will figure it out." Erika's resilience, her trust in the universe, and her ability to turn obstacles into growth moments have shaped an inspiring career across education, tech, and executive leadership. We also dug into the challenges women face with visibility, self-advocacy, and storytelling—especially in corporate environments. Erika emphasized the power of proactively sharing wins, creating a “walking deck” of your professional narrative, and boldly reaching out to people who can open new doors. Her message? Stop waiting. Own your story. Be strategic. Be seen.Key takeaways from the interview:0:01:15 – Erika's early independence—staying in the U.S. while her family moved abroad—instilled a lifelong sense of self-reliance and adaptability.0:02:25 – Her two personal mantras: “The universe provides” and “I will figure it out.” These guide her through both triumphs and setbacks.0:04:02 – Even when things fall apart—like losing a job or a relationship—there's purpose in the pain. Stay open to the redirection.0:07:01 – Erika's career path from teacher to tech leader highlights the power of transferable skills and trusting your evolution.0:09:23 – Confidence is built on owning your unique journey. Even a nontraditional background has tremendous value.0:12:01 – Diversity in leadership (gender, race, and background) isn't just fair—it's essential for innovation and AI inclusivity.0:14:33 – “Your work won't speak for itself.” Erika recommends monthly impact recaps to leadership—even if it feels bold.0:17:29 – Use AI tools like Copilot to amplify your voice—but remember, you are the pilot.0:18:55 – Don't just “like” on LinkedIn—add thoughtful context, tag mentors, and share your expertise to establish thought leadership.0:21:11 – Be bold and reach out to people, even if they're senior or don't know you. 80% of the time, they'll say yes.0:24:15 – Always have a “walking deck”—a personal presentation that shares your career highlights, aspirations, and values. If you're interested in being featured on the Fearless Female Leadership podcast, or you're a leader looking to gain clarity on ‘what's next', how to build more cohesive and high-performing teams, and lead with greater confidence and influence, let's have a confidential conversation.Cheering you on always!– Sheryl

This week's guest got her start in hospitality PR before trying her hand at launching a restaurant of her own. Lacey Irby's unique perspective as storyteller and tastemaker, coupled with inventive dishes courtesy of executive chef Ryan Brosseau, has helped turn Dear Margaret into a dining experience worth writing home about. She comes by the studio to tell us how they transformed an old dilapidated seafood restaurant into a space for a fine dining concept and offers some practical advice for aspirant restaurateurs looking to strike out on their own. We talk: the influence of influencers on the restaurant media landscape, running a nimble operation, getting your kids to touch tables, and so much more.

It is well-known that the institution of marriage has changed dramatically in the past few decades. However, very little research has focused on the role of religious institutions in helping couples form and maintain their relationships. Guiding God's Marriage: Faith and Social Change in Premarital Counseling (NYU Press, 2024) by Dr. Courtney Irby offers an examination of Christian marriage preparation programs, exploring their efforts to stabilise the institution of marriage and highlighting the tension between individualism and community in people's relational lives. Marriage preparation programs offer a useful lens through which to trace shifts in both religious and family institutions because they set out clear and intentional articulations of marriage ideologies and gendered relationship scripts by faith communities. By documenting the changes in content and practices of Christian premarital education along with its advice regarding what makes a good marriage, the book charts the ways that religious communities have been transformed by and have helped to contribute to the individualization of faith and relationships. Featuring archival research as well as first hand observations of four marriage preparation courses—two Protestant and two Catholic—along with seventy interviews with participating couples and leaders of these and other programs, the book offers a rare view of visions about how to realise a successful and faith-filled relationship. This examination of marriage classes offers key insight into how religious communities have responded to cultural changes in marriage, gender, sexuality, and intimacy. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars.
