This week on Finding Your Bliss we have a show devoted to music. Educator, marketing genius and artist, Dr. Amara Pope is here to talk about how she helps champion representation in the Canadian music industry, which is beautifully exemplified in her amazing TEDx Talk. With over a decade of experience in marketing, brand management, and digital media across several industries, Dr. Amara Pope also holds a Ph.D. in Media studies from Western University. Her Ph.D research is fascinating. It's focused on the intersections of media, culture and race, particularly within popular music and digital media. Dr. Pope also earned a Master's in Communication Studies from Wilfrid Laurier University and completed a Joint Honours Bachelor's Degree in Rhetoric and Professional Writing and Fine Arts with a Digital Media Specialization from the University of Waterloo. She is dedicated to amplifying underrepresented voices in Canada and fostering diversity, which as mentioned, is beautifully exemplified in her TEDx Talk. She has delivered impactful lectures at prestigious universities, such as the University of Southern California, and more. She has also spoken at conferences and served as a guest panelist all across Canada. Her insights have been featured in notable media outlets including CTV, CBC, iHeart Radio, Global Television, NBC and others. When not immersed in her professional pursuits, Dr. Pope enjoys weightlifting and experimenting with oil, acrylic and mixed-media painting. Also on the program, we have Juno Award-winning R&B, Soul, and Pop singer Sean Jones. As he puts it, “It's been a long time…but it always feels good to come home.” Sean Jones is referring to the kind of '90s inspired R&B music he made with the highly successful boy band, "In Essence." The group rose to fame in the early 90's with the hits, "Friend Of Mine," "IE IE" and "You Will Never Find" and received worldwide recognition for their ability to combine Rap, Pop, and R&B with exciting performances. In 2004, "In Essence" won a Juno Award for their debut album before breaking up in 2006. Post break up, Jones took an interest in songwriting and producing. Over the next ten years, he put together a catalogue of songs that stretched in genre from soft rock to Motown Revival. It was his take on soulful classics however, that would eventually land him a unique and incredible opportunity to showcase his skills. In 2015, Sean became the first artist to secure a solo summer residency at the historic Casa Loma in downtown Toronto. The Monday night revue titled “Soul In The City” gave Jones and his nine-piece band, "The Righteous Echo," the chance to showcase his original songs, as well as their take on popular old school hits. The show was also a wonderful opportunity to give emerging artists a stage to share their talents. “Soul In The City,” through Jones' hard work and tenacity, grew to 1000+ people every Monday night. The overwhelming success he had with that residency led to WestJet, Canada's second-largest airline, handpicking Sean to create a musical experience for the passengers aboard their flights. For the project titled, “The WestJet Boarding Sessions,” Jones recorded new versions of classic Canadian hits, such as “These Eyes” by The Guess Who, “The Weight” by The Band, and “Angel” by Sarah McLachlan and flew across Canada to interview some of these cherished musical icons. His latest album, has a familiar sound that many have not heard from him in almost 15 years. Jones' most recent album, “Weekend Lover” features a set of songs that are reminiscent of 90's R&B, something Jones is very familiar with. Says Jones: “Growing up, my parents played all the classics, Temptations, Marvin Gaye, Otis Redding, The Supremes…the list goes on and on. I loved all of it then and to this day. However, the music of the late '80s and '90s is what sparked my interest in performing. There was something about the musical energy of that time. The R&B/Pop son ...

Welcome to episode 43 of Holly Jolly X'masu! In this episode, I'll be discussing the 2016 album, “Christmas Songs” by the R&B Pop artist, May J. When I first started collecting Japanese Christmas music, I didn't buy much contemporary music. My main focus was the 1960s through 1980s. As I got more, though, and started doing my podcast, I started checking out more recent music. I've found some great albums, so I'm glad I expanded my horizons a bit. I've mentioned before that, for a while, I relied on some sharing sites to find new music. Part of what intrigued me about May J.'s album was the fact that, not only was it not on any of those sites, but as soon as one site would upload it, it would either be taken down immediately, or the site itself would actually be taken down. I'm guessing the Mouse was the main reason for that, which is why I only include a brief sample of the one song in this episode. You may have noticed that this episode came out later than I planned, and that I've been absent from social media for the most part. Some of that is due to the post-Christmas malaise that normally sets in, but my personal life has also been extremely hectic. I'm hoping to be back on track shortly. I hope you enjoyed May J.'s album. Join me back here on the 25th as I discuss Chris Hart's 2015 album, “Christmas Hearts – Winter Gift,” for Black History Month. As always, any feedback on this episode would be appreciated. If have any suggestions, or if you'd like to recommend a song or album for a future episode, drop me a line and let me know. Remember, I've added a button to my Ko-fi page. If you'd like to support me one cup of coffee at a time, a donation is only $3. I've also opened a Redbubble store. I only have a couple designs up, but keep an eye on it as I'll be trying to add more. Any proceeds or donations received will be put towards purchasing new Japanese Christmas music to review for future episodes. You can also find me on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. And if you get a chance, leave me a review on iTunes. Thanks!

The Benefit of Consistency with Cheryl Cooley “Don't feel ashamed of where you've been in life.” — Cheryl Cooley Will the constant pursuit of happiness lead to a meaningful life? If you are persistent, you will get it. If you are consistent, you will keep it. In this episode, we are joined by Cheryl Cooley to talk about the benefit of consistency. Part One of ‘The Benefit of Consistency with Cheryl Cooley’ Cheryl Cooley is an actress known for Klymaxx: The Men All Pause (1984), Klymaxx: Man Size Love (1986), and Klymaxx: I Miss You (1985). KLYMAXX, the all-female band (AFB) with the 80’s R&B/Pop musical hits, “Meeting In The Ladies Room”, “The Men All Pause”, and “I Miss You” Billboard magazine’s #3 song of 1986, as well as into the ‘90s with the #4 R&B hit, “Good Love” now performing with a new revealing experience of professional high energy, commanding funky rhythms and sensual melodic movements that is a musical journey you will never forget! “Be willing to follow your vision and stay persistent even if it feels like it isn't happening.” – Dianne A. Allen Cheryl’s parents always gave her a toy guitar every Christmas when she was a kid. At age eleven, she got involved in guitar lessons, which she felt comfortable about. She had a dream about being on stage playing an electric guitar, the lights were on, the entire audience was screaming, and she was getting ready to step to the microphone. But even if she already had it in her DNA to play the guitar, consistency played a huge factor in her success. There is a lot of misunderstanding from the average person about what it takes behind the scenes with consistent focus, effort and work to produce a three to four minutes song. There’s so much planning involved before getting up on stage and doing that one-hour show. The technical things, travel preparation, rehearsing consistently, contract signing, hotel accommodation, venue, sound system, lighting, safety, security, and many more! Most people only witness the climax part, but behind those are months of blood and sweat. The lesson here is, everything takes dedication, consistency, and perseverance no matter what your job is. Part Two of ‘The Benefit of Consistency with Cheryl Cooley’ As a woman, Cheryl shares that some women have family issues to deal with as they continue to strive for success. They usually have to deal with children, husbands or parents. Many times, those people will not be supporting because they have a fear that something might happen. Sometimes, someone will give negative remarks, “Maybe you should go home and be a housewife. Maybe you should pick a safe job. Why do you want to be up on stage and you got all these strange people running after you?” As a woman, she believes that we have another layer of obstacles that we have to get over. “Be a good steward of the resources that come. Don't blow it, thinking that it's an endless pipeline.” – Dianne A. Allen There was a time when she told their band manager, “I don’t want to do this anymore.” But she finds herself waking up the next morning feeling motivated and ready to face the challenges again. Her fans also motivated her to keep moving forward, especially when someone says how much her song or interview inspired them. Music is her life. She describes it as something that’s like a source of oxygen for her. Whatever it is that lights up your world more than anything else, hopefully, this episode will help you keep that magic of consistency that will take your dreams to greater heights! Rozetta Marie is a singer, songwriter, and all around talent (including published model, accredited actress, and former modern dancer for NDI). Following up from her most recent single release, "Bounce," Rozetta Marie is now focusing on her album "Geminii Life," scheduled for release on her birthday, May 25th. Much like her multiple Gemini personalities, her sound speaks to a wide variety of listeners and genres of music, such as Hip Hop, R&B, Pop, and even a little soulful Rock. But, if you had to pick a genre, find her under R&B/Pop. Her voice can go from a sultry Anita Baker, to a raspy sexy Jasmine Sullivan, to a hardcore seductive Rihanna, and when you thought you heard it all, she hits you with a Remy Ma like flow in some fire rap lyrics. Her lyrics are clever and expressive, her look is enticing, and her voice is hypnotic. What more could you ask for? Highlights of her career include, opening up for Vado (Dip Set), Vicki Winans, Allure, music spinning on a syndicated radio platform WPIR 98.4 FM, artist review by Music Connection magazine and Elegant Hoodness Magazine (RIP AD The General, CEO of Elegant Hoodness), radio hosting with Dr. Dre (Yo MTV Raps), hosting her own NYC local cable show "SexCells" under SNYC TV Production and Geminii Life Entertainment, and she won't stop til she reaches the top! Striving to be the next big thing internationally Rozetta Marie says "Neglect not the gift that is in thee..." words that she lives by. R&B/Pop singer Sandra Bouza joins the DTP to discuss her latest EP 'Three Years'. After spending 3 years playing covers in Morocco and deciding it was time to take control of her life, Sandra returned to Canada to record three powerful tracks that dive deep into her own struggles with addiction and her journey to sobriety. Sandra finally feels that she as at the point in her road of recreation that she is not only comfortably talking about her struggles, but driven to continue on the path she started on. We discuss what each of the songs on 'Three Years' represented during her recovery, her experiences on the road to sobriety, the creative differences that allowed Sandra to feel like she was finally representing herself in the studio compared to past experiences, and the growth she continues to embrace!
Today, I talk briefly with recording artist, Anna Mvze. She opens up about her experience in signing her first record deal and the nuances of the music industry (and this contract in particular) that she quickly had to learn. Anna Mvze, mc/singer/songwriter, brings a new dimension to the female artist arena while giving the perspective from a vulnerable young woman that is not afraid to reveal her deepest darker secrets. Anna is brilliantly versatile with an ability to switch style and moods throughout a string of records that bounce from R&B/Pop with candid and confessional lyrics to Hip-Hop/Trap records where she’s straight out wrecking the mic. Kelly incident and whether it affects his legacy 30:20: Usher's downward spiral continues 37:30: R&B Hall Of Fame nominations: Donell Jones and R. Kelly You know we had to come back with another podcast after the drama that came with this R&B this week. We start off the podcast talking about Musiq Soulchild's upcoming double album "Feel the Real". This is the follow up album to "Life On Earth" which only came out a year ago. We talk about our expectations for the album and if it's too soon to be putting out another album. We also talk about how it's weird that this era for Musiq has been rather quiet as his singles aren't really taking off. Afterwards we talk about some singles that are blowing up on Urban AC including Tamar Braxton's "My Man", Charlie Wilson's "Good Time" and Khalid's "Location". We also talk about Tone Stith's new album "Can We Talk". Tone is a new artist and he has us excited with this youthful R&B/Pop sound. And of course, we had to talk about the incidents that happened to R&B legends R. Kelly and Usher this week. Although the incidents are different, we discuss whether they're both damaging to their respective careers. It's quite an interesting debate that we have and essentially it's up to everyone to decide whether they can separate the person from the music. For our hall of fame this time around, we try to induct Donell Jones and R. Kelly.
Nikki has been blessed with discovering her gifts as a singer/songwriter at a very early age. Her family has always played a major role in her evolution as an artist. In her early childhood, back in Camden, Arkansas, Nikki recalls belting out songs from the likes of Anita Baker & Shirley Murdock, alongside her Mom and creating her own tunes playing around on her grandma’s piano. At 9 years old, now living in Las Vegas, Nikki’s musical talents would continue to blossom. She, along with her older brother, Ne-Yo, participated in Kids For A Better Society (KFABS), a non-for-profit organization founded by their uncle, Jerry Smith. Here, Nikki received vocal lessons and began performing on stages in front of live audiences. Nikki went on to continue her musical quest by studying classical music, at the Las Vegas Academy for the Performing Arts. While attending the Academy, she along with two other classmates, formed KNIA, a 3 girl R&B/POP group. Nikki immediately took the spotlight in KNIA, as the lead singer and songwriter. Under the management of Terry Lynn Cason, of C&L Music, KNIA had the opportunity to work alongside other music industry pioneers including songwriting with Quincy Jones Jr. of QD3 Productions and vocal training with Mary Wilson of The Supremes. Nikki along with KNIA have also performed at many live venues including MTV’s “The Cut.” In 2003, Nikki decided to branch out and take on some independent projects that allowed her songwriting skills and talents to shine with numerous artists in the music industry including: Dr. Dre, Rodney Jerkins, Alonzo Jackson, Tiffany Villarreal (Aftermath), Ne-Yo (Def Jam Recordings), Kurt Farquhar (Farquhar Productions, Inc), and Nina Sky (Universal).
