Right now we're traveling back from this week's successful Eastern Regional Conference. So this week, as we head into summer, we're sharing an episode on how to take advantage of all the services that the PLRB Weather/CATs department has to offer. A supervisor leads a team of very needy CAT adjusters! Over the course of the year, the supervisor fields many questions as it comes up in their claims. Was there hail on X date? Was there lightning in the area? This hurricane is coming soon, where can I get news about it? Winter weather caused a slip and fall!! Where can I find information on wildfire perimeters and California evacuations? For help herding all these cats, we'll head to PLRB.org. Notable Timestamps [ 00:00 ] - The episode introduces a scenario where a supervisor fields constant weather-related questions from cat adjusters, highlighting the need for a centralized, reliable source for hail, lightning, hurricanes, wildfires, and more. [ 02:15 ] - The team previews multiple scenarios—winter storms, hail, lightning, power outages, tornadoes, hurricanes, and wildfires—showing the breadth of searchable weather data available to support claim investigations. [ 03:16 ] - Using a winter slip-and-fall in Iowa City, Iowa, the report pulls verified storm data from the National Weather Service, including freezing rain reports and hourly observations to validate conditions on the date of loss. [ 07:42 ] - For hail damage in Illinois, radar-derived data and verified hail reports allow adjusters to map proximity, estimated hail size, and associated severe thunderstorm warnings tied to a specific date and address. [ 09:53 ] - Lightning reports provide daily probability percentages and satellite detection data, helping assess commercial equipment claims while noting limits in resolution and cloud-to-cloud versus cloud-to-ground distinctions. [ 12:25 ] - Power outage searches archive data every ten minutes via PowerOutage.us, identifying outage timing, affected customers, and likely storm causes—critical for business interruption investigations. [ 14:09 ] - A tornado case study of the Mayfield event demonstrates wind reports, damage points, and EF-scale path polygons, enabling precise analysis of storm track and intensity relative to a property. [ 17:31 ] - Wildfire tools include historical perimeters like the Garnett Fire, evacuation zones, thermal hotspots, smoke analysis from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration data, and hurricane spaghetti models—underscoring a single portal for comprehensive weather intelligence. What do you do when someone shares something heavy… and you care deeply, but don't feel equipped to respond? In this episode, we sit down with Dr. Mark Mayfield (or as he prefers, “just Mark”) to talk about the growing need for mental health awareness in the church, and the very real tension many leaders feel between wanting to help and not knowing how. Mark brings a unique perspective, having spent years in both ministry and clinical counseling. Together, we explore his personal story, what he's seeing in churches today, and why so many leaders feel stuck in that middle space of “I know this matters… but what do I actually do?” This conversation is honest, practical, and hopeful. You'll walk away reminded that you don't need to have all the answers to care well, and with a clearer sense of what your next step could be. Quotes “I don't believe church is about Sunday mornings. It's a component—but it's not the end-all, be-all. We have to think beyond Sunday mornings. We have to think about community and connection.” — Dr. Mark Mayfield “I think the hesitation is legit. It's just we have to get them past paralysis.” — Dr. Mark Mayfield “People just want to have language to their struggles. That's okay. They want to be seen.” — Dr. Mark Mayfield “The secret to good counseling is the therapeutic relationship… just creating space for people to be seen and to be heard.” — Dr. Mark Mayfield “You don't need to be a counselor to care well—but you do need to know your role.” — Dr. Mark Mayfield Resources

Destination: The Port of Hollidaysburg! Landlocked Hollidaysburg sits just south of Altoona. The only waterway is the Beaverdam Branch of the Juniata River, maybe 30 feet wide at this point...a port? 190 years ago...yes! Hollidaysburg was a big canal town at the heart of the Pennsylvania Canal system, where everything from the east came to go west, and vice versa. Hollidaysburg was where the canal boats were broken into sections to be hauled over the Allegheny Mountains on cable-powered rail cars, in an audacious engineering feat called the Allegheny Portage Railroad. You know we're going to do that history, because I love it, but we're also going to sit down for an interview with Matt Krueger, the owner, brewer, and "Chief Hydroceramic Engineer" at Sugar Run Brewing in nearby Duncansville. I've known Matt for about 20 years, but I didn't know he brewed beer; turns out he's pretty damned good at it! Hear the stories, about birds and beers, and Pickles the Class A Motorhome. Then Dirt Road Dave and I hit the bars in Hollidaysburg: Marzoni's Brick Oven & Brewery, Boro Coffee (it's a coffee bar, okay?), Mayfield and The Pipe Room, and Shan Nicole's Irish Pub. Good times, and I'll tell you all about it. I've also got a tease about a possible event this Fall; more on that, probably in August, because right now I'm up to my armpits in book writing and my son's wedding. Busy busy busy! What I'm Drinking Today is kind of a big deal. It's the first review anywhere of Found North Batch 012, a new blend from a company that's been exploring new frontiers in Canadian whisky. Throughout the conversation, we emphasize that the goal is not replacing teachers, but reducing the shallow, repetitive tasks that consume so much of their time and energy. We also talk about the importance of teachers remaining thoughtful evaluators of AI-generated content and building a small, purposeful toolkit that supports student-centered learning. Ross Mayfield, investment strategist at Baird, says that the Federal Reserve "is going to be very hard pressed to find a reason to cut [rates] here," and he thinks that if the central bank does have to make rate reductions down the road, "it won't be for reasons investors would be excited about." Mayfield says he remains bullish, noting that "a consolidation period is probably in order," setting up a volatile summer setting up a continuation of the bull market later in the year, barring any sort of exogenous shock. And speaking of shocks, Mayfield addresses what he sees as building signs of a market bubble, and while he says they bear watching, he is not expecting that kind of action to result from current conditions. Todd Rosenbluth, head of research at VettaFi, makes Roundhill Memory — a brand-new fund that has raked in billions of dollars in assets in just weeks since it opened — his "ETF of the Week," noting that the fund has gotten off to a gangbusters start but that the fund's focus on just a few hot stocks should have investors concerned about whether it's a flash in the pan or here to last. Will Rhind, chief executive officer at GraniteShares, returns to the Market Call, and focuses largely on business-development companies, which got hammered due to software lending in March, rebounded sharply in April but remain unloved by the market today. GraniteShares' HIPS U.S. High Income ETF invests largely in BDCs and closed-end funds; Rhind outlines the current yield outlook in that space and for master limited partnerships.
In this episode, I chat with Robert Mayfield about a growing tension in education: teachers aren't necessarily resistant to AI, they're resistant to more fragmentation. We explore how the structure of teaching leaves little room for the deep thinking required to design meaningful learning experiences and why AI should be used to create space for that work, not add to teachers' cognitive load. Robert shares powerful examples from classrooms, including how one teacher's perspective on AI completely shifted when she saw its potential to support student thinking and reclaim teacher time. We also discuss the difference between simply putting together lessons and intentionally designing them, along with small, realistic ways educators can begin protecting time for reflection, analysis, and instructional decision-making. On Thursday January 10th 1985, kindergarteners Michael and Pamela Mayfield vanished without a trace on their way home from school. At 2.45 pm, the bell rang, and the siblings left Betsy Ross Elementary in northeast Houston with the rest of their classmates. It was the first time they had been allowed to walk home alone. One witness said they saw Michael and Pamela getting into a green, two-door car close to the school, but other sightings were reported as late as 5.00 pm that day. Four months later, police received a call from a person claiming to know the location of the missing children, and the focus of the investigation was shifted 1500 miles away.
