The battle for the soul of the Comrades Marathon is not over - despite the crushing victory which runners achieved at the recent Special General Meeting in Pietermaritzburg. Pressure from those resisting demands for a clean administration has resulted in four resignations from the CMA board, including its respected chair and vice chair. Veteran competitor Barry Holland, who has finished 49 Comrades Marathons, the most of anyone, has been intimately involved. He says the situation is fast reaching a point where intervention will be required from Sports Minister Gayton McKenzie. He spoke to BizNews editor Alec Hogg.

In this episode of Run with Fitpage, we have Emeritus Professor Dr. Mike Lambert to discuss all about quantification of training load, especially for runners, with our host and Founder Vikas Singh. Emeritus Professor Mike Lambert, a distinguished figure in exercise science, holds a Ph.D. from the University of Cape Town, which he completed in 1990. His illustrious academic career saw him ascend to full professorship in 2009. Prof. Lambert boasts an impressive publication record, with 262 research papers and one patented work, collectively cited over 11,000 times. As a mentor, he has supervised or co-supervised 30 Ph.D. students. Having served as the Editor-in-Chief of the South African Journal of Sports Medicine and an executive committee member of the South African Sports Medicine Association, his influence extends beyond the academic realm. In 2021, he retired from his academic position and transitioned into the role of a senior research scholar at UCT. Dr. Mike Lambert is a road running enthusiast with a remarkable running portfolio. He has conquered three Comrades marathons (90 km) and secured the 43rd position in 1982. His achievements also include nine Two Oceans marathons (56 km), with another notable 43rd position in 1986. Bruce Fordyce is one of the all-time greatest ultra-distance runners, having won the iconic Comrades Marathon a total of nine times. To date, he has run the event a total of 30 times.He is the 50-mile record holder for the United States All Corners Race and is the former record holder of the 100-kilometre event. He won the Brighton to London race three times between 1981 and 1983.He is an author, motivational speaker and in 2004 he was voted 64th in the TOP 100 GREAT SOUTH AFRICANS. Questions:1. Bruce, other than being a very accomplished athlete, few people know that you were born in Hong Kong, area qualified archaeologist, keenornithologist, and connoisseur of fine wines. Would you tell us your story about the formative years, what led you to become an elite athlete and where your passion for Comrades Marathon started?2. You stood against apartheid when it was unsafe to do so. Tell us a little about the participation of women and non-whites in Comrades and your statement against apartheid at the 1981 Comrades Marathon event.3. You have had a long and successful career in running. Is there one highlight or victory that stands out for you among others and why?4. You held the world record for the 50-mile London to Brighton ultramarathon for 36 years before it was finally broken by Jim Walmsley in 2019.
