Good stories don't magically appear on the page. Someone grinds them out. In this edition of Doing What Works I'll tell you how I wrote my second book, why I didn't want to, and why I'm glad I did. Here are your show notes…Left for Dead: A Second Life after Vietnam is the memoir of Jon Hovde.Staying the Course: A Runner's Toughest Race is the memoir of Dick Beardsley.Platoon helped me get in the mood to write Left for Dead. There's a difference between a story and a sequence of events; the writers of South Park know! There's no such thing as writer's block. The Summer of Ordinary Ways “wrings intensity,” as one person put it, “from the seemingly mundane.”

When you push your limits and things get a little uncomfortable, you often learn something about yourself.  When you repeatedly do it for years, we reckon you must learn some universal truths about humans and how we tick. As a professional adventure racer, Nathan has spent much of his adult life pushing his physical and mental boundaries and helping those in his racing team do the same.  Hame came across Nathan watching World's Toughest Race on Amazon, which Nathan and the Kiwi team won by some margin. But it was the fact they did it with so little fuss that struck Hame and made him want to get in touch with Nathan.  (It must have annoyed the TV producers so much that the winning team was seemingly doing it with no drama! Kiwi's don't get worked up enough to make good reality TV!) But beyond adventure racing Nathan has been an outdoor educator, team building consultant and event producer, helping people of all backgrounds safely push their limits in the outdoors.  So, when he and his wife Jodie had kids they saw no reason to change things, and have been taking their kids on, in Nathan's words, “epic adventures” from a very young age. But this chat is not just for outdoorsy adventurey types, Nathan's wisdom can be universally applied. He explains how he tries to incorporate the same philosophies as captain of the NZ adventure racing team as he does at home - Offer respect and composure at all times, no matter what, to ensure that communication is always open. To have a strong team you need to know how people are feeling and no one opens up to an erratic yeller! Nathan also beautifully explains how his Samoan heritage helps him bring “Polynesian chill” to his parenting and problem solving, how he and his wife helped each other develop their own individual parenting styles, and how he fosters independence and freedom for his kids, while offering support at every step. Like all our great guests, Nathan is the first to admit he hasn't got it perfect, or even close. But as he says, your family is your most important team, and the commitment he shows to his is clear.  We really loved spending time with Nathan, he's an inspirational guy and we can't thank him enough for taking the time to come over to Wellington and have a chat. (And his no questions asked cancellation clause in the event of good powder skiing was equally inspiring, and readily agreed to by us!) You can find out more about Nathan HERE.  And if you like getting outdoors and still eating tasty food, check out Nathan's REAL MEALS - awesome tasting and nutritionally great freeze dried food for adventurers. And yes, they ship to Aus. You can get in touch with us at howotherdadsdad.com - we love to hear from you, and thanks to all of you that have written in. — And as always, big thanks to our friends at HERTZ.  For this adventure across the ditch we took our kids and lots of gear, and to make our trip seamless and hassle free we used HERTZ.  The pick up at the airport in Wellington was a breeze, the cars were sparkling clean, smelled great, the kids seats were pre-fitted and dropping it back was equally straightforward.  If you've got an adventure planned in Australia, go to hertz.com.au/hodd where you can grab a 25% discount off the base rate. On this episode of Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different, we engage in a profound conversation with Command Sergeant Major Gretchen Evans, a decorated veteran who served 27 years in the U.S. Army. Gretchen shares her inspiring journey, from her motivations for joining the military to her experiences as one of the few women in a male-dominated environment. She discusses the challenges she faced, including injuries that led to her hearing loss, and her post-military work with Team Unbroken, an adaptive athletic team she founded. Gretchen Evans' story is one of resilience, leadership, and unwavering dedication to service. You're listening to Christopher Lochhead: Follow Your Different. We are the real dialogue podcast for people with a different mind. So get your mind in a different place, and hey ho, let's go. Honoring Veterans and Their Service: Command Sergeant Major Gretchen Evans Christopher opens the episode by expressing his deep respect for veterans and the critical role they play in society. He then introduces Command Sergeant Major Gretchen Evans, highlighting her remarkable journey and the challenges she faced, including injuries sustained in combat that led to her hearing loss. Christopher emphasizes Gretchen's role as an inspiration, both during her military career and in her life after service, particularly through her work with Team Unbroken, an adaptive athletic team for veterans and civilians who have faced life-altering injuries or trauma. Early Motivations and Joining the Military Gretchen shares her motivations for joining the military, which were born out of necessity. After losing her parents at a young age, her older brother became her guardian. Struggling to make ends meet while juggling college and work, she was inspired by her father, a World War II veteran, and the values instilled in her. She decided to enlist in the military, finding a welcoming environment in the Army after being turned away by other branches due to her height. Breaking Barriers as a Woman in the Military When Gretchen Evans enlisted in 1979, there were very few women in combat roles. She reflects on the challenges of being one of the few women in a male-dominated environment, particularly during basic training. Despite the tough leadership from Vietnam veterans who were not accustomed to training women, Evans expresses gratitude for the rigorous training she received, which prepared her for the realities of military life. She shares her first experience of being deployed to a combat zone in Grenada in 1983, describing the mix of nerves and excitement she felt. Despite her youth and inexperience, she relied on her training and the guidance of her leaders to navigate the chaotic environment. Despite her injury, Evans continues to inspire through her resilience, sharing her journey in overcoming adversity. If you've ever run an ultramarathon, you almost certainly know the name of Marshall Ulrich. His accomplishments are unparalleled, and if I tried to list them, I'd undoubtedly leave out many. I could naturally mention his 29 official Badwater finishes in Death Valley, a race most of us would not want to tackle even once. Or that he dwarfed those finishes by continuing on to the Mt. Whitney summit, or that he once ran around the entire 425-mile perimeter of Death Valley, which we have fun talking about here. He completed the Seven Summits on his first attempt, and he set the speed record for the transcontinental run across the U.S., recounted in his great book, "Running on Empty." I could add his Stray Dogs team completed all of the Eco-Challenges, televised as The World's Toughest Race. You may have already heard about all of this, so instead let's focus on his latest endeavors, like the Route 66 Ultrarun, a 140-mile, multi-day event along that historic route in Arizona, and his support for his good friend and fellow Stray Dogs teammate Mark Macy in his inspiring battle against Alzheimer's. Marshall is one of the nicest people you'll ever meet in the sport. He was an early mentor to an aspiring ultraendurance athlete named David Clark, and wrote the foreword to David's first book, "Out There, a Story of Ultrarecovery." Marshall's latest book, "Both Feet on the Ground," will inspire you to seek out your own adventures. Oh… and in case you didn't know, both of these gentlemen are powerhouse ultra-endurance athletes! Mace had spent thirty years competing in Colorado and around the world in ultra-endurance competitions and is one of the few people who have finished all eight Eco-Challenge events. Once diagnosed, Mace feared losing endurance, strength, and independence.  Mace's son Travis, also a professional endurance athlete, also struggled to see his father battling the disease. In 2019 they decided to participate in World's Toughest Race—a seven-day, grueling 400-mile marathon of trekking, climbing, biking, and paddling through the jungle—for one final race together. Weaving excerpts from Mace's passionate personal journals alongside a first-person narrative by Travis, A Mile at a Time tells the story of this incredible journey and what both father and son learned along the way. A powerful story about living—and thriving—with a disease that impacts nearly six million Americans. This timely, and deeply moving father-son adventure sheds light on the hard truths of this disease while giving readers hope of all that still can be achieved. Welcome to Episode 33 of the Eat for Endurance Podcast, featuring elite adventure racer and Team New Zealand Captain, Nathan Fa'avae. Nathan is a legend in the world of adventure racing. He has been a full-time or semi-professional athlete for 18 years, and he is still absolutely crushing it. He has accomplished many impressive athletic feats during this time, including captaining the New Zealand adventure racing team to six World Championship victories. His most recent win was at World's Toughest Race - Eco Challenge Fiji, which my husband and I binged on Amazon Prime when it came out over the summer. If you haven't watched the documentary yet and would like to, skip this episode until you've seen the show, as you will otherwise hear lots of spoilers!Adventure racing, you could argue, is the epitome of endurance sport. Teams are racing for up to a week, engaging in multiple disciplines (trekking, paddling, mountain biking, climbing, white water rafting and more), and do not have much time to sleep or rest. Nutrition is always important to successful sports performance, but the sheer volume and logistics of nutrition in adventure racing puts fueling considerations on a completely different level. I had SO many adventure racing questions  after watching Eco Challenge Fiji, and was inspired to ask Nathan onto my show after listening to Tina Muir's Running for Real podcast featuring him and his teammate Sophie (such a badass mother and athlete!). It was an awesome interview, but they didn't talk about the team's nutrition, so obviously an Athlete Nutrition Profile was in order! I've been enjoying longer, in-depth interviews this season, and this one is no exception. Nathan lives for adventure and the outdoors, and has such an inspiring story to tell. We explored his life and nutrition/athletic background, and he shared plenty of amazing stories and advice from his decades of experience in the sport as well as lots of not-seen-on-camera details from Eco Challenge Fiji. I was craving an adventure as soon as we finished our interview! Also, I want to move to New Zealand. :)THANK YOU Nathan for spending a couple hours with me! I can't wait to see what Team New Zealand gets up to next. More on Nathan Fa'avae: Nathan's Website: https://nathanfaavae.nz Follow on Instagram and FacebookOther Links and Announcements: Watch World's Toughest Race: Eco Challenge FijiTina Muir's Running for Real Podcast  Episode featuring Nathan  Fa'avae and Sophie HartPlease show your support by leaving a rating and/or review on iTunes and/or share with your friends! Music Credit: Joseph McDadeHave nutrition questions, a guest or topic request, or any other feedback?
