Today we discuss how to execute your best possible race day performance. Mikael and Jack provide practical tips that you can apply from sprint distance triathlon to the Ironman. Some of these tips are probably familiar (but bear repeating), others you have likely never heard or thought of before. HIGHLIGHTS AND KEY TOPICS: Proper pacing across swim, bike and run in a triathlon Why you should use RPE as the primary driver of pacing strategy Known and lesser-known tips for maximising speed across the swim and the bike Is “run for dough” still true in triathlon? Managing the heat in hot races Nutrition and hydration - more than just having a plan, it's about understanding how to adjust the plan on the fly when needed. How to get the most out of yourself mentally - the brain is a central governor, so if your head is not in it, you won't have your best race. But getting your head to be in it and stay in it is easier said than done. DETAILED EPISODE SHOWNOTES: We have detailed shownotes for all of our episodes. The shownotes are basically the podcast episode in written form, that you can read in 5-10 minutes. They are not transcriptions, but they are also not just surface-level overviews. What if there was a way to boost your VO₂ max, improve heat tolerance, and potentially increase endurance without adding a single extra workout to your training week? Most runners are always looking for the next thing that will help them run faster, recover better, and stay healthier for the long haul. In this episode, I break down one of the most overlooked performance tools available: sauna training. You'll learn how heat exposure can improve endurance, boost key physiological adaptations, and help your body handle hard efforts more efficiently. I also share a simple protocol to get started, common mistakes runners make, and why the benefits may extend far beyond race day and into long-term health and longevity.Key TakeawaysSauna training may help improve endurance and running performance by creating adaptations similar to altitude training, without changing where you live or train.Consistency matters more than suffering. Starting with short sessions and gradually building up is the safest and most effective way to get the benefits.Sauna is one of the few tools that may improve both athletic performance and long-term health, making it a valuable addition to your training routine.Timestamps[00:27] What You'll Learn[01:18] How Sauna Actually Makes You a Faster Runner[02:00] What's Happening Inside Your Body[03:08] Use This Cheat Sheet to Start Sauna and Get 17% Faster on Race Day[03:45] My Science-Backed Sauna Post-Run Protocol[05:42] Three Things to Remember Before You Sauna[07:47] What to Do in the Sauna?[08:20] Infrared vs Steam vs Finnish Dry Sauna[09:38] Steam Saunas[10:24] No Sauna? What happens when you willingly sign up to do something that seems impossible? In this episode of the Champion Living Podcast, Doug Champion welcomes JR back to the show to relive their recent Spartan Race experience—a challenge that tested far more than physical fitness. From brutal carries and slippery climbs to deep mud bogs, barbed wire crawls, and a dramatic finish through the fire pit, this race became a powerful lesson in resilience, teamwork, mindset, and discovering what you're truly capable of when quitting isn't an option. For JR, the race represented something even bigger. After feeling like he'd hit a plateau, Spartan reignited the "one more rep" mentality that has fueled so much of his journey. Together, Doug and JR discuss how pushing beyond perceived limitations creates growth, why surrounding yourself with the right people matters, and how adversity often reveals strengths you didn't know you had. The conversation is packed with hilarious moments, hard-earned lessons, and practical insights for athletes, competitors, and anyone chasing growth in life. Along the way, they recount unforgettable race moments, including navigating treacherous obstacles, surviving the infamous mud bog, completing a grueling barbed-wire army crawl where JR lost his pants while his uncle threw dollar bills onto the course, and ultimately crossing the finish line after 2 hours and 22 minutes of relentless effort. The episode also highlights JR's mission through the Spur Your Way Out Foundation, which helps individuals overcome obstacles by providing access to life-changing equipment and opportunities. Donations help fund resources such as FES bikes, track chairs, and other adaptive equipment that empower people to continue pursuing an active and meaningful life. Training camps can be one of the most valuable tools in ultramarathon training — especially when you know how to use them the right way.In this episode, I recap my 3-day, 71-mile Western States 100 training camp and break down the biggest lessons I learned from running the course less than a month out from race day.I cover why training camps are so useful, how to structure one for your own race, what I learned about the Western States course, how I'm adjusting my race strategy, and the key takeaways around pacing, heat management, downhill durability, hydration, nutrition, and mental approach. This episode is not just a Western States recap. It's a guide for how to use any training camp as a dress rehearsal so you can show up to your next ultra more prepared, more confident, and more ready to execute.SHOW LINKS:Register for our 100K or 50K race, Desert Peak Ultra, by going to desertpeakultra.comWant to be coached by me and my team to crush your next ultramarathon in our 1:1 coaching program? A lot of runners (especially first-time 50k runners) feel like they need to run the full race distance before race day just to prove they can do it.In this episode, I'm breaking down why I don't recommend that approach… but also sharing how I'd coach someone through it if they were absolutely dead set on doing it anyway
It's here: the $1 million Nutrien Equine - Standardbred Race Series at Riverina Paceway . Mark Barton and Brett Scelly, along Harness Racing NSW General Manager, join me to discuss the build-up on Friday afternoon.
Text Kristen your thoughts or feedback about the showThis one took me a while to process.A few months ago, I ran my first-ever half marathon: the Disney Princess Half Marathon. And while I expected the experience to be about running, I realized pretty quickly it was actually about something much bigger.Trust.Trusting yourself before certainty exists.Trusting the ordinary reps.Trusting that consistency matters even when progress feels invisible.Trusting that you can keep showing up before you fully know how things will turn out.In this episode, I'm sharing the real behind-the-scenes of training for and completing the race — from injuries and superstition, to awkward Main Street moments, to realizing the finish line felt a lot less cinematic than I expected. This isn't really an episode about running. It's a reflection on business ownership, consistency, identity, motherhood, courage, and learning to trust yourself a little more every time you try something hard.I think that lesson is going to stay with me a lot longer than the medal.
Welcome to the Purple Patch Podcast! On this episode, IRONMAN Master Coach Matt Dixon discusses strategies for improving IRONMAN run performance, emphasizing the importance of training consistency, running economy, and strength training. He highlights the need for year-round consistency, especially during off-season, and the significance of running economy, which he likens to miles per gallon for the body. Dixon also stresses the value of brick runs, which integrate running off the bike, and the strategic use of walk breaks during races. He advises against overtraining and instead advocates for a balanced approach that prioritizes being "fit and fresh" on race day. Dixon also touches on the importance of bike fitness and proper fueling and hydration strategies. Vaibhav is a runner next door whose story will make you relate with you and inspire you to get out of the door and start running yourself. He was an absolute beginner up until 2021, struggled with Bronchitis and had never run before. Since then, he has come a long way and he is only getting started.Vaibhav spent time in being consistent, stayed disciplined and relentlessly prioritized his fitness. He then debuted in a marathon at Rome in 2025 and got to the finish line in an impressive time of 3:03. He improvised it in Paris a month later to xxxx. He stayed patient, trained further and clocked an even more impressive finish time of 2:48:50 in 2026 London Marathon. Did you know he cramped at around 29 kms and so he had to cut back on his paces in the remaining 13 kms. If he stays on track, he may very well be running a much faster time in the months and years to come.In this episode we cover:How setbacks from UPSC results and bronchitis did not deter him from getting fitter, and eventually fasterWhy two years of 10 kilometres a day with no watch and no plan built a large aerobic baseHow Vaibhav went from 3:03 at Rome to 2:48 at London in under a yearThe 26-week training block that took him from 60 kilometres a week to 100 to 110 kilometres a weekHow interval sessions with his run club, Clapham Chasers, brought his 5K time from 18:30 to 17:16What went wrong at London — cramping at 28km due to a complete lack of electrolytes — and what he would do differentlyHow a corporate lawyer in London manages to train twice a day while working long hoursWhy discipline, not talent, is the only thing that separates people who achieve from people who do notAbout Vikas Singh:Vikas Singh, an MBA from Chicago Booth, worked at Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, APGlobale, and Reliance before coming up with the idea of democratizing fitness knowledge and helping beginners get on a fitness journey. The easiest way to sabotage a marathon isn't missing a workout, it's making a tiny race day choice that snowballs. We pulled 252 responses from our WeViews “Race Day Insights” survey and sat down with returning guest Elizabeth Clore (Boston Bound author and a multi-time Boston Marathon finisher) to translate the data into decisions you can actually use on your next start line.We dig into the hot-button topic of carbon plated running shoes and why 63% of marathon respondents race in them. We talk real benefits, real risks, and why stability can matter more than hype depending on your gait and terrain. We also get into brand talk, including the Nike Boston sign controversy and what marketing outrage cycles say about the running community, plus why some runners stick with reliable models like the Saucony Endorphin Pro even when flashier “super duper shoes” show up with $600 price tags. Then we go deep on marathon fueling strategy and logistics. Elizabeth shares what she used at Boston: a smart mix of Maurten gels, UCAN pre-race carbs, Honey Stinger chews for when gels get hard to swallow, and Skratch Labs hydration for electrolytes plus carbs, along with how she carries a handheld bottle early and switches to aid stations later. We wrap with pacing strategy, A-B-C-D goals, Garmin screens that keep you honest, and the most common race day mistake we all make: going out too fast.If you found this helpful, subscribe, share it with a training partner, and leave us a review. What's the one race day decision you want to get right next time?

Happy Big 10K Race Day! We kick off this massive episode live from Hawk Mountain B&B, where we are joined by Channel 69 News reporter Bo Koltnow and his cameraman Andy to document the highly anticipated 10K charity race between Erin and Southern Charm's Craig Conover. We break down all the chaotic pre-race logistics, including Craig deciding to change the head start rules at the last minute to a synchronized start so we could calculate the 27-minute handicap at the end. We also recount Erin fueling up on a single sugar cookie and Nerd Gummy Clusters , and the confusing presence of an active tree shredder truck in the middle of a treeless farm field.Despite facing brutal 30 degree winds, hills, and constant local traffic, Erin pushed through to claim the ultimate victory, running through a makeshift toilet paper finish line! Because Craig lost, he had to face the ultimate punishment: taking a freezing plunge into the local river, while reading an letter written by the Friend Of Podcast ( @friendofpodcast ). We reveal how he secretly plotted to buy his way out of the plunge by offering a donation instead, but ultimately put on a bathing suit and took the icy dip. We also ask Craig's assistant Jack some questions about working for Craig's "beautiful mind". Post race, we recap the delicious chicken shawarma dinner made by Dan's mom, our toxic habit of immediately retreating to a dark room to edit footage for hours instead of relaxing, and a heated argument with Craig over whether maple syrup originated in Canada or Switzerland. We also share a massive announcement: we are officially hosting a live show at the Boston Marathon Fan Fest in the busiest Sunday slot, right after Meb! Finally, we record a cozy "fireside chat" where we discuss the absolute necessity of the B&B finally installing Starlink internet, especially after a terrifying incident where a 911 call for a chimney fire dropped due to zero cell service. Erin gives an update on her grueling "Pull Up Revolution", and shares the profound emotional trauma of having to "thin" (a.k.a. rip out and execute) the weaker seedling plants in his indoor hydroponic garden.
