Send us a message (& include the best way to reach you)The fastest laps are won long before the green flag—when your mind fires clean and your body runs light. Brain fog can make you feel “online but empty,” and for drivers, crews, owners, and executives, that dull edge costs reaction time, good judgment, and stamina when it matters most. We walk you through a proven, race-ready roadmap to reclaim mental clarity with the Five Rs: Reveal, Remove, Replace, Rebalance, and Retain. We start by naming the real culprits behind slow thinking and short fuses: heavy metals from fuel and shop exposure, mold from musty rooms on the road, and gut overgrowth that thrives under stress and poor sleep. You'll hear how functional lab testing spots what standard bloodwork often misses, and why guessing keeps you stuck. Then we get practical with an immediate, safe starting point: a 7–21 day functional medicine detox that supports liver pathways, lowers toxic load, and refuels the brain with the vitamins, minerals, amino acids, and omega-3s it uses to think fast and recover deeper. Most people notice clearer mornings, steadier afternoons, and better sleep within a week. From there, we outline how to rebuild for the long season: replace deficiencies so neurotransmitters can fire on demand, rebalance hormones and the nervous system to exit survival mode, and retain gains with quarterly resets tailored to a demanding travel and race schedule. Along the way, we share the real-world factors that push clarity off track—and the simple choices that bring it back. Today, I got to chat with Isaac Benjamin. Isaac is a senior out of South Kitsap high school in Washington. He is #2 returner in the Northwest and one of the top high school athletes in the nation going into this season. He holds PRs of 4:13 for 1600, 8:52 for 3200, 14:35 for track 5K, 15:01 for cross country 5k, and 30:18 for track 10K. He is also a Brooks NIL Athlete.Isaac is one of the most fun guys you will ever meet at the top. I talk a lot about how chill a lot of my guests are, but Isaac is just like such a genuine, funny, chill guy. He says he doesn't get nervous before races and I can see why. He keeps it real, down to earth, and I think he sees our sport in a way that I think a lot of people can benefit from.Don't wanna spoil too much. We talk about his junior track season and racing through sickness. We talk double threshold, 8-minute pace easy days, race nerves, the track 5K and track 10K he did this summer, and so much more. But before we get into the show, please—if you haven't already, and if you're enjoying this podcast—I would really appreciate a follow and a five-star review on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, or whatever platform you're listening on. That goes a long way in supporting the growth of The Sunday Shakeout. That's all I ask.Other than that, sit back, relax, and enjoy my conversation with Mr. Isaac Benjamin.
Taper is a reduction in overall training volume, which gives you more time - and a lot of athletes spend that time stressing out. But there are things you can do in those few weeks to make race day substantially easier. In this episode of Coach Quip, we have 11 tips to help you leverage these weeks and turn taper time into race day power.

All four Trail Network hosts — Katie Asmuth, Leah Yingling, Hilary Yang, and Rachel Drake — open the episode with life updates and a debrief on a wild-weather Run Rabbit Run weekend, digging into what went wrong for many athletes and how U.S. races handle (or don't handle) mandatory gear. They trade practical strategies for racing in bad conditions, from smarter crewing and real waterproof layers to training in the weather you fear. Then Rachel sits down with Megan Roche — double doctor, mom of two, coach, and the 2025 Run Rabbit Run 50-mile champion — to talk about her “growth and grace” mantra, rebuilding after pericarditis and two pregnancies, lower-mileage success (about half her pre-baby volume), cross-training, and why patience and pelvic-floor PT matter. Megan shares how she balances competitive fire with motherhood, the joy of pacing, and what's next as she eyes longer distances. The crew closes with quick takeaways: prepare early, layer smart, size up shoes, and let mindset lead the day. This episode is edited and produced by the Sandyboy Productions Podcast Network.A special thank you to Osprey for supporting this episode. You know the feeling. Your heart rate's already elevated before you've even warmed up. Your stomach feels off. You start second-guessing everything—your training, your pacing plan, your breakfast… all of it.Let me start by saying this: nerves are normal. In fact, they're a sign that you care. The goal today is not to get rid of the nerves, but to learn how to channel them.First, let's talk about where these nerves come from. Your body's just doing what it's designed to do—preparing for a challenge. It's a mild fight-or-flight response: adrenaline kicks in, your senses are heightened, your body is on alert. But if you don't know how to frame it mentally, those butterflies can start to spiral. They go from "I'm ready" to "I'm freaking out." So let's talk about how to shift that energy. One of the most powerful mindset tools you can use is to relabel the nerves as excitement.“I'm not anxious. I'm excited.”They feel almost the same in the body—elevated heart rate, sweaty palms, tension. But one mindset is empowering, the other is paralyzing. So when you feel the nerves kicking in, say to yourself:“This means I'm ready. I've trained for this. My body is waking up.”Nerves often come from fear of the unknown—weather, competition, how you'll feel at mile 20.So pull your mind back to what you can control:Your pacing strategyYour nutrition and hydrationYour attitudeYour breathingEverything else? Let it go.Here are a few tools I give my athletes to stay grounded:Visualization – Close your eyes the night before or morning of and walk through your race. Start to finish. Calm, confident, and strong.Breathwork – Box breathing (inhale 4, hold 4, exhale 4, hold 4) helps regulate your nervous system.Mantras – A few words you can anchor into when your mind starts to spiral. Examples: “Strong and steady.” “I've done the work.” “Calm is fast.”Okay, so what if you still panic a little? That's okay. It doesn't mean the race is doomed. Most athletes have 1–2 “oh crap” moments pre-race. Let it pass. Come back to your breath. Come back to the plan.Your race isn't won or lost in the first mile. It's won by staying present.Race day nerves don't mean something's wrong. They mean you're stepping into something meaningful. You're pushing your limits. You're putting yourself out there. You're doing something most people will never dare to try.So the next time you feel those butterflies? Smile. Say thank you. And get ready to fly.

They say breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and on race day it's absolutely crucial. In this episode, we hear from 8 different triathlon coaches to see exactly what they eat before toeing the start line. From short course sprints to long course endurance events, we dive into how fueling strategies change and why topping off glycogen stores can make or break your performance. Whether it's oatmeal, bagels, fruit, or electrolytes, you'll get practical tips and fresh ideas to dial in your own race-morning nutrition.
There is no guarantee on race day. Anything can happen, no matter how perfect or imperfect your build was. In fact, one of our favorite race mantras is: "Show up and see what you've got," which acknowledges the fact that the only thing you can do on race day is your best. We all have race day energy, nerves, and—most of all—expectations. Sometimes we might be afraid to voice our goals out loud, for fear we will not meet them or they will weigh us down. In this episode, we dig into the art of managing and embracing expectations so they become a source of strength, not stress. We dive into how to make realistic race goals and how to change them on the fly. We talk about your athlete personality might be a part of the way you react to the lead up to a race or a disappointing performance. There is a lot to unpack in this one!
Conventional wisdom is to never try anything new on race day. As we grow as runners, a willingness to experiment on race day can be key to further growth. Every finish line moment you've celebrated was made possible by someone who showed up before dawn, prepared water stations, or cheered when you needed it most. In this heartfelt episode, we pull back the curtain on race volunteering with insights from experienced volunteers who've supported events from local 5Ks to the Boston Marathon. Our volunteer panel—Ilyana, Steve, Kay, and Mike—share what motivates them to give their time, the behind-the-scenes work few runners see, and the special connections formed with participants during races. From setting up thousands of water cups hours before runners arrive to finding creative ways to encourage struggling participants, these stories will transform how you see the smiling faces along your race route."I want any runner that interacts with me to know that I'm there to help them in any way I can," explains Steve, capturing the generous spirit that defines the volunteer experience. Kay reminds us that volunteers are often the first to arrive and last to leave, asking nothing in return but the joy of supporting others' achievements. We're also joined by Mark Lane-Holbert, who shares his profound experience guiding a blind runner at the Boston Marathon and discusses his upcoming handbook on running therapy. His work with Achilles International highlights another dimension of the running community's supportive nature. The episode features a delightful conversation with five women who formed the "Joyful Runners" relay team for the Centennial 100K in Washington after meeting through our podcast community. Their story of strangers becoming teammates exemplifies how running creates meaningful connections.Whether you're a seasoned racer or preparing for your first event, this episode will deepen your appreciation for the volunteers who make our running journeys possible.
