Diana Al Shaer has a Palestinian father and a Russian mother. Her grandfather was the first Palestinian ambassador in Russia and her father followed him in his footsteps. Diana grew up in Russia and by the age of 25 she started to become more and more connected to her Palestinian identity. She is an international Grand Prix dressage rider and sports diplomat and she was asked by the Palestine Equestrian Federation to come out for Palestine in last summer's Olympic Games. Unfortunately her horse was injured and she could not participate, even though they had qualified originally. But she is keen to try again in 3 years and her horse is still young enough to be ready by that time!Besides horse riding she is also the initiator of Pali-Rus Media, an initiative that wants to be a cultural media bridge between Russia and Palestine. Recently she produced a video with a beautiful synergy between Russian ballet and Palestinian dabka dance. Diana also produces a podcast that is called Dialogue. Last week she published an episode in which she interviewed me, Kristel, about Stories from Palestine podcast. You can find her podcast episodes on her YouTube channel and she is working on getting all episodes uploaded on podcast players. What is dabke dance, how did this traditional Palestinian dance came into existence and what role does it play in the Palestinian society? I talk to Sharaf DarZaid, a dancer, choreographer and arts manager. He is also the choreographer of the new Palestinian Jerusalema dance challenge video that was published a week ago on Monday 2 November. Watch the video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kbuJ61WBdpoThe Jerusalema dance challenge went viral on social media with the hit song 'Jerusalema' by Master KG and Nomcebo Zikode from South Africa. Many people from all over the world shared dance videos on social media. 130 Palestinian dabke dancers from Jerusalem, Gaza, Bethlehem, Ramallah and Jenin cooperated with the Popular Art Center to produce this dance video that highlights their love for Jerusalem, the city that most of them are denied access to due to the Israeli military checkpoints and the separation barriers. Sharaf is known for developing the “Afrodabke” style, a fusion of traditional African dance moves (Cameroonian) with Palestinian folkloric dance (Dabke)Follow Sharaf on facebook: https://www.facebook.com/sharaf.zaidhttps://www.facebook.com/PopularArtCentrehttps://www.popularartcentre.org/ If you appreciate the podcast I would be very happy if you wanted to contribute and buy me a coffee (or a falafel) on the Ko-fi platform page: https://ko-fi.com/storiesfrompalestine For more information, photos and links and to sign up for the mailinglist visit the website. Technical project manager by day. Folk dancer by night. This is the life of Rima Sliat, of Amman, Jordan, a practitioner and teacher of dabke—a type of Levantine Arab folk dance. Aside from traversing between the worlds of Information Technology and dabke on a weekly basis, Rima also works at bridging the gap between the historical roots of dabke and its more modern manifestations which sometimes challenge prevailing gender stereotypes and the status quo.

Jay Bahadur is an investigator for an international agency. He’s a Canadian, born in Toronto, Ontario, who went on to be a journalist and author, becoming well-known for his reporting on Somalian pirates. He got an inside look at Somali piracy, after spending months in the country, living with pirates, and venturing into areas that most journalists wouldn’t dare visit. Jay documented his experience in a book titled The Pirates Of Somalia: Inside Their Hidden World, which was released in 2011. 6 years later, in 2017, a movie by the same name was released, which closely follow’s Jay’s story. It’s also known by an alternate title,‘Dabka’ and was directed by Bryan Buckley. Jay is portrayed on screen by Evan Peters, and the film also stars Barkhad Abdi, Melanie Griffith, and Al Pacino. Listen as Jay tells us what it was like to venture into places that most other journalists would never dare, how he got the pirates to open up, whether or not the movie was true to his book, and more.
