This week's poem is 'Death Of A Princess' by Maxamed Xaashi Dhamac 'Gaarriye' from Somalia. The poem is read first in English translation by W N Herbert and then in Somali by Maxamed Xaashi Dhamac 'Gaarriye'. ‘Gaarriye’ (1949–2012) is regarded as one of the most important Somali poets of the twentieth century. He composed on a wide variety of topics, from nuclear weapons to the nature of poetry. He was the initiator of the Deelley, a very famous 'chain' of poems by leading Somali poets in the 1970s and 1980s that were critical of the regime of Siad Barre. Dankzij interwebs kunnen we toch gezamenlijk praten met niet één- maar met twee geweldige gasten: Axmed Maxamed van Dance with Pride, een non profit underground organisatie die grassroots initiatieven ondersteund voor de queer community of color en Dino Suhonic van Maruf, een stichting voor de Islamitische LHBTQI+ gemeenschap. Met Axmed en Dino praten we uitgebreid over hun weg naar een veilig thuis, het verschil voor beiden tussen ‘gay’ en ‘queer’, de kracht van een sterke en activistische gemeenschap en de rol van kolonialisme en post kolonialisme in de acceptatie van ‘queerness’ door de Islam. Een belangrijk gesprek waar Mariam zich al weken op heeft verheugd! Ook hebben we het over het kind of neo-liberale Westerse concept ‘in’ en ‘uit de kast’. Ja je leest het goed, kind of. Wij van Dipsaus houden van taal en houden nog meer van vermenging van verschillende talen (samen spreken we maar liefst 7 talen). Deal er maar mee…Uiteraard hebben we onze bbb en b’s voor jullie en dankzij Axmed toch nog een 5e b in de vorm van een serie big ups!
