Thanks for joining us again for another amazing episode of What's your Why! Today, I'd like to start with a question, things that make you go hmmm kind of idea……When you hear people described as “Salt of the Earth” or “Earth Angels”, I'm sure that many of you have people that immediately come to mind. Who are they? People that you are close to that warrant the title and description. Well, I am over the top excited to introduce you (indirectly of course) to two more, in hopes that you will gain as much as I did from meeting them. Danny Robertshaw and Ron Danta are quite simply just that – earth angels and I am so grateful that they were able to give me time in their increasingly busy schedules. Apart from being successful horsemen in the Hunter/Jumper equestrian community, Danny and Ron set up an animal rescue in 2005, which stemmed from an immediate need to assist people and animals after Hurricane Katrina so tragically decimated New Orleans. They have since been able to secure their rescue as a 501C3 and have subsequently starred alongside their furry friends in an original documentary appropriately named “Life in the Doghouse”. We were given the opportunity to sit down with these amazing “Earth Angels” and discuss Their life in the Doghouse along with their passion for their extremely successful passion project, aptly named Danny and Ron's Rescue. If I could ask for your time and attention of this episode, I can assure you that my guests will not disappoint and I hope you'll find it as easy as I did to welcome them into your hearts and discover what Earth Angels can really look like. Visit https://dannyronsrescue.org/ for more information or to support the rescue directly.
We're so excited to be joined by Danny Robertshaw and Ron Danta of Beaver River Farm in Camden, South Carolina, and Danny and Ron's Rescue. You may know them from their equine endeavors--both have trained riders and horses to compete at the industry's most prestigious events, while Danny is a renowned judge and Ron has devoted countless hours to the USHJA as chair of the USHJA International Hunter Derby & Incentive Task Force--or from the incredible dog rescue they started in 2005. These two have certainly dedicated their lives to animals in incredible ways, so join us as we hear how they became horse obsessed, how they juggle it all, and what keeps them motivated to keep doing what they do for the animals in their lives. Thank you to Brian Bowman for our theme music.
Nukhet is the Executive Director of Danny & Ron's Rescue. Danny & Ron's Rescue was founded by Danny Robertshaw and Ron Danta. Danny & Ron’s Rescue speaks for helpless animals that have no voice. They began their rescue missing in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina by aiding dogs that were left homeless by the storm. Since then, their outreach has grown to heights they never imagined. Today they are rescuing puppy mill dogs, bait dogs used in dog-fighting, and hundreds of dogs from shelters—often moments away from euthanasia. Danny & Ron’s Rescue is unlike any other rescue organization. Danny and Ron have turned their own house into the ultimate safe haven for these abused and abandoned pets. They personally care for them until they are ready for adoption. Each dog is treated like part of the family, fed organic dog food from its own bowl, and even allowed to sleep in the bed. The dogs are given the opportunity to live with humans and other dogs in a real home environment which is the best way to prepare a dog for adoption and a life with a loving family. They are proud to be one of the only organizations that does not charge a pre-set adoption fee and instead relies on an affordable donation from the adopter.

Documentary filmmaker Ron Davis, whose work includes Harry and Snowman and the 2019 release Life in the Doghouse, seeks to tell inspirational true stories that are largely unscripted. Ron’s own journey to becoming a filmmaker might be worth a documentary of its own. Ron grew up riding and competing in the hunter/jumper divisions near his home in northern New Jersey, but left the sport behind to pursue a career in publishing in New York City. He spent 10 years working his way up the ranks, ultimately managing global sales and licensing for both Simon and Schuster and Sterling Publishing, a subsidiary of Barnes and Noble. After seeing a video celebrating a friend’s life, Ron was inspired to create a similar piece as a gift for an equestrian he knew. A filmmaker friend, a producer for the sitcom How I Met Your Mother, saw the piece and recognized that Ron had an innate talent for filmmaking. With his friend’s encouragement, Ron decided to pursue filmmaking in his spare time. In 2009, using his background in sales to help fundraise for the project, Ron co-produced and co-directed his first full-length film, Pageant. The piece debuted on television on The Sundance Channel and played at theaters in New York City. In 2010, Ron relocated to Wellington, Florida, to pursue filmmaking full time. He founded Docutainment Films, which has produced four full-length documentaries and has several upcoming pieces in pre-production. The FilmRise/Netflix film Harry and Snowman tells the true story of Harry deLeyer and Snowman, a slaughter-bound horse of unknown breeding that deLeyer purchased at the New Holland Auction in Pennsylvania for just $80. Together, the pair wrote their own rags-to-riches story, winning prestigious show jumping competitions. The film premiered at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival in 2015 before opening to general release in September of 2016. It was a New York Times “Critic’s Pick” and won the Audience Award for Best Documentary at both the Nantucket and Prescott Film Festivals in 2015. Harry and Snowman ultimately became one of 2016’s top-grossing theatrical documentaries. In 2018, Ron completed Life in the Doghouse, another FilmRise/Netflix production that chronicles the work of equestrians Danny Robertshaw and Ron Danta, who together have rescued over 11,000 abused, abandoned and starving dogs. Danny & Ron’s Rescue finds safe homes for the rescues through their network of horse people and attending horse shows. The film premiered on Netflix in June 2019 and was lauded by the likes of Ellen DeGeneres, who urged her fans and followers to see the film and support Danny & Ron’s Rescue. Ron will donate all the net proceeds from his film to dog charities across the country. He is committed to producing only stories he cares about deeply and looks to craft character-driven pieces which inspire and warm the heart. Topics of Discussion: [:25] About today’s guest.
