HAV Horse Rescue, a nonprofit in Las Vegas founded by Alice Whitfield and David Hammer, is dedicated to rescuing and rehoming surrendered horses. Whitfield, a former Broadway performer, and Hammer, a successful businessman, were high school sweethearts who reconnected after 53 years apart and now run the rescue together. The rescue not only provides a sanctuary for horses in need of medical care and attention but also offers a place for volunteers to connect with animals. The facility is expanding to include a state-of-the-art equine rehabilitation center. The couple's story is one of rekindled love and a shared passion for helping horses, providing a second chance for both the animals and themselves.

What if the tapestry of your life was woven through constant change and cultural encounters? Join us for an insightful conversation with writer and poet Robert Lunday, who shares his journey of growing up as a military dependent and his impending move from Houston to the serene landscapes of Kyushu, Japan. Robert opens up about how his early experiences of frequent relocations fostered a deep curiosity and understanding of diverse cultures—skills that will surely aid him as he embraces a new beginning in Japan.Together, we navigate the sensitive subject of global disappearances, focusing on countries like Mexico, Japan, and the United States and the disappearance in 1982 of Robert's stepfather. Our discussion highlights the courage of grassroots efforts, often led by families, to find missing loved ones when official avenues fall short. From poignant artistic memorials by a Mexican shoemaker to the haunting tales of Indigenous communities, these stories underline the power of collective action and the profound impact of “missingness” on identity and community. As Robert prepares for his new, expat life in Japan, the conversation shifts to themes of cultural integration and adaptation. We explore the intriguing opportunities presented by Japan's abandoned homes and the unique challenges faced by expatriates in preserving these relics of rural history. Through the story of Robert's wife, Yukiko, and her equestrian pursuits, Robert reflects on the blend of tradition and innovation that defines life in rural Japan. Whether discussing societal norms or language barriers, Robert's insights promise to enrich your understanding of what it means to truly belong in a new place.Robert Lunday: https://robertlunday.com/Disequilibria: Meditations on Missingness by Robert LundayUniversity of New Mexico Press, 2023You can order Robert's latest book directly from his website: https://robertlunday.com/books/Chapters(00:03) Moving Along With Robert LundayRobert Lunday's childhood as a military dependent shaped his worldview, finding solace in libraries and adapting to new environments.(15:19) Studying Global Disappearances and ResponsesExploring disappearances in Mexico, Canada, Japan and the U.S., including law enforcement's role, grassroots efforts and the impact on Indigenous and Black communities.(22:07) Global Disappearances and Collective ActionIndigenous experiences, personal journeys, and collective support in navigating the complexities of missing loved ones.(27:46) Navigating Missing Persons Cases and SupportSocial media's impact on missing persons, personal experiences, verification, global research, and ambiguous loss.(42:19) Cultural Integration and New BeginningsAdapting to new environments, diversity in Houston classrooms, challenges of immigration, and the role of writing in processing experiences.(48:07) Exploring Japanese Culture and LanguageExploring Japanese culture and language, adapting as a foreigner, and considering societal norms and demographics with Robert's Japanese wife, Yukiko.(55:43) Japanese Abandoned Homes and Expatriate LifeAbandoned homes in rural Japan are being purchased by non-Japanese for vacation purposes, while cultural practices like horse sashimi and waste disposal are also discussed. Michael Blowen loves “being old.” Those are his words, not mine! After years as a film critic for the Boston Globe, he snapped. In the middle of an awful movie, he stood up and yelled at the other critics: “How can you endure this?” Today, he's so much happier. As the founder of Old Friends, a Thoroughbred aftercare facility in Georgetown, Kentucky, he's helped turn a modest mom-and-pop operation into a sprawling 236-acre farm with three satellite locations and a herd of over 255 retired former racehorses and breeding stallions. Retirement, if you can call it that, really suits Michael. He believes age is a free pass to say yes to the fun and no to the dreaded obligations. He's formed friendships with celebrities like Albert Brooks and Angie Dickson. Every morning, he wakes up with a heart full of gratitude, ready to feed former Kentucky Derby winners. The thrill of it still gives him the chills. This whole thing started because Michael, as a fan of horse racing, wanted to improve his gambling skills. But whoops! He fell in love with horses and has dedicated his life to improving their lives. Listen to Michael. We've all seen the pictures: the emaciated horse who looks ancient, but in actuality is in their prime, their coat dirty and their eyes dull. We've all also had the desire to just hook up our trailer (or commandeer one) and take them home to a better life. Unfortunately, few of us have the resources or the means to follow through on that impulse - so how do we go about helping all of the horses who are in dire need? And what are the lives like of the people who do follow through and take the one (or in one of our guest's case…more than one) horses back home - what do they want everyone to know about their lives and organizations? What do they really need from us to succeed and keep their doors open? In this episode of Equestrian Voices, host Caroline Culbertson sits down with Tahlia Fischer from All Seated in a Barn and Olivia Alcorta from Storeybrook Farm. In their candid, heartfelt, conversation, Caroline and her guests discuss many of the seen (and unseen) aspects of the horse rescue world, including: How they came to each run horse rescues. The common misconceptions about rescues that people carry with them. The day to day reality of what it takes What horse rescues can (and cannot) provide for the horses they receive. Monologue:Goals and Resolutions for 2023Motivation vs DisciplineRule of 1/3'sWeird True Facts (WTF) Little known horse factsGuests; When Camille Carson was a little girl and spending time with her horse Detaunt, there was no schedule, no show, and no agenda. There wasn't anyone telling them how they were supposed to do things and how they weren't. They learned how to listen to one another, how to trust one another, and how to build connection and willingness to explore one another's boundaries and capacities. With that, they rode and jumped bareback and bridleless, they galloped up mountainsides, swam in rivers, sat and ate blackberries together. Doing it “right” or “wrong,” being on a schedule or agenda, none of this ever came into play. They were just doing it for the joy, the trust, the love, and the connection that they had with each other in partnership. Because of this connection and that true partnership, they felt they were able to do anything together. Camille Carson started Driftwood Horse Rescue and Sanctuary because of her love of horses and to battle the slaughter pipeline for horses in the US. Shane and Aaron Harris, along with trainer Bruce Siben, operate the American Legend Mustang, a nonprofit group based at the 22-acre River Rock Ranch. The crew picks up mustangs from the Bureau of Land Management at their corral in Ridgecrest, bring them back to Ojai, and train them to the saddle. In the four years they've been operating, they've adopted out about two dozen horses. The BLM rounds up the wild horses from their range in the West, typically Utah and Nevada's Great Basin, often at the behest of local ranchers who find their cattle competing for forage in the rough and wild country. Shane said "I went to pick up one horse and ended up with three," falling in love with the creatures. Aaron said the horses, despite the trauma of being herded into catchment corrals with helicopters, can be gentled into being petted in one day. With Bruce's natural horse training, horses can be ridden within one to two months months under ideal conditions. Many of the adopters keep their mustangs corralled at the ranch. ALM has several internship and volunteer programs ready to resume after the two-year pandemic hiatus, and are making major renovations at the ranch for public events and new facilities. The nonprofit will be featured in the coming issue of Ojai Quarterly. We also talk about the fascinating history of mustangs, many descended from escapees from conquistadors, and how quickly Native American tribes in the West adapted to a nomadic horse culture, becoming expert riders within just a few generations. The ALM's plans for expanded programs and adoptions also came in for discussion. Shane Harris' prior career as a CHP officer and hairdresser, Aaron's web savvy and Bruce's horse trainer role models were part of the wide-ranging discussion as well. We did not talk about Comanche chief Quanah Parker, Viking burial sites or Irish stew recipes.
Have you taken in a blue sky with puffy white clouds on a warm summer's day lately - or in the past? Can you bring to your mind and body what that felt like to experience? As you remember can you slow down your inner experience to notice any sensations in your heart space, your face, your belly, or any images in your mind's eye? I, personally, have found this can seem very stretching to pull off, especially in the face of stress or anxiety when I had been anticipating pleasure instead. Several years ago after spending the morning connecting and working with my horses, I was looking forward to going with my son to visit one of the local Horse Rescue centers together. As I went into the house, I heard my son express with intensity, “It hurts! It hurts! Get off of me!” I felt my belly clench and face tighten, as I quickly moved to his side to offer my support only to be met with, “Don't touch me!” as he began to desperately pull off his shoes and socks. Immediately my chest collapsed, my face flushed, and I heard my inner critic taunt me, “It's never going to change – this will always happen – you should know better by now.” Silently I placed my hand on my chest, closed my eyes, and looked up over the horizon to connect with the Light. I breathed into my heart space gently, and felt my Essential Self draw close. “Are you feeling bowled over with the sudden sense of disappointment? Just so worried that time will be stuck in a loop of never ending lack? I'm wondering do you really like it when you can sink into the inner experience of having abundant, endless support about you, like a warm billowy cushion of Love energy within and all around. Especially in moments of intensity with the one who is your son?” My Essential Self guessed. Time felt as if it stood still as I breathed in Love, and breathed out Love. In reality it took only a moment, yet that precious moment of self-connection fueled my capacity to extend that same gentle, loving acceptance to my son. I asked him softly, “Do your feet need more freedom today, or maybe they'd enjoy the support of deep pressure massage?” I noticed his body shift and soften in response, as he made a request, “I need a hug.” In terms of building neural structure, what matters is not the event or circumstance itself, but slowing down to notice your embodied experience (without making it wrong) then consciously choosing to sink into allowing, and uncovering, a sense of Love. When I remembered to look up (with my eyes closed) to take in the wide expanse of blue sky and to focus with intention on the puffy white clouds I saw there (in my mind's eye) I could dip into the sensations of warmth, lightness, and happiness in my body, and notice, enrich, and absorb, how beautiful life is when seen as an opportunity. Would you like to experience more of a sense of freedom in your life? Reach out to me today to explore what that might look like at HealingYouSanctuary.com Thanks for being on the journey with me today, Healing You. ..... *Are you ready to step into the light and out of the shadows, to experience the resonance of somatic empathy and warm accompaniment? Welcome Back Everyone! I think every little girl I know, including myself, LOVES horses. I was never in a place to actually ride horses but as soon as I could pick up a pencil horses were the first animals I sketched. I fell in love with their eyes and their sleek muscular bodies. I am Marcia Sivek and this is BeProvided Conservation Radio. If you cannot tell, today's show is about horses, specifically horse rescue and rehabilitation with Julia Hyde, founder of Canham Farm Horse Rescue and Rehabilitation and her senior volunteer and outreach coordinator, Jackie Foley. Julia started Canham Farm Horse Rescue and Rehabilitation about 5 years ago when she realized horses needed her help. In today's show, we talk about how horses come into their care. Julia and Jackie share stories on how domesticated horses are cared for and their dedication to getting them back to health and finding a new home. Julia also shares how our iconic wild horses in the American West are rounded up by the Bureau of Land Management using helicopters. We learn why these round ups are not good for the horses. Because of these acts, these symbols of freedom are diminishing from our lands. I learned so much, which makes me want to learn more. If you know someone working to help save our wild horses and would want to share their experience, please contact me through my website at www.beprovided.com. Enjoy the conversation. I start by asking my guests to introduce themselves and tell us a little bit about how they were inspired to dedicate their time to horse rescue. We own our ranch, so every penny of your donations are used to support these horses. We treasure your donations and work hard to earn them. We are able to rescue dozens of horses each year thanks to you! Our mission is, where possible, to rehabilitate, train and prepare our rescue horses to become the well-loved family members they are meant to be. If a horse can be saved and live without pain, we are willing to do what it takes to make that happen. We also have horses on site that are sanctuary horses and are permanent residents due to their special needs and the high maintenance that they require. https://wildathearthorserescue.org

Today's episode is deeply personal. I wrote a piece of facebook when I was in the midst of feeling despair and anger around the space of horse rescue that is a part of my purpose. It is a vulnerable share around all the places I get impacted by this work and a deeper conversation around this mission of how we hold horses and the consciousness around them in this world.

Deanna Mancuso tells the story of how her troubled grandfather’s gift of a horse with a bad personality led her create the Lucky Orphans Horse Rescue farm, which now hosts 50 formerly abused horses at a permanent farm and animal sanctuary in Dover Plains. Today these horses are providing significant equine-assisted therapy to humans in need of help—it is “people helping horses heal people”. In addition to allowing anyone to visit the horses from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m, after 3 there are clients who receive equine-assisted psychotherapy. Also the form, originally primarily an animal sanctuary, now has many events that reach out to the community, such as “Faces of PTSD,” which features photographs of veterans with horses, and an Easter candy program for children as well as pony rides at the form and elsewhere. Also on the program is Lisa Odendahl, who is working on the “Faces of PSTD” event. My horse adventure continues with my third married couple podcast! Sharon & Danny Burrier run Rocky's Horse Rescue and Rehabilitation outside of Thurmont. We chat about the surprise start of their rescue, the joys of every animal they help, and how they met! We go into detail about the trauma of their horses, donkeys, and mules. This was a very eye-opening interview for me. They were also kind enough to deal with a few newbie horse questions too. Website: https://www.rhrr.org/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/rockyshorserescue/ iTunes - https://goo.gl/7HS1u4 Google Play - https://goo.gl/Whff9U Every Interview - http://www.wfre.com/interesting-people-podcast/ Rocky's Horse Rescue and Rehabilitation is a 501c3 non-profit horse rescue ( EIN# 46-5656223) located in Rocky Ridge, Maryland. We rescue equines from all over the United States to give horses, donkeys, and mules a soft place to land after being abused, neglected, or thrown away at an auction to the highest bidder. We also assist in helping horse owners find a new home for their horse if we are unable to take them to the rescue. Our goal as a rescue is to rescue them, evaluate them, rehabilitate them, and find them forever homes. This process can be easy or difficult depending on the needs of the animal rescued. Many of our equines are adopted out to live their lives happily in their forever home. However, some of the equines we rescue can't be homed and these equines become our lifers. The Lifers continue the process of rehabilitation at the rescue while they live out their lives.
Deanna Mancuso tells the story of how her grandfather’s gift to her of an abused horse when she was 12, gradually led her create the Lucky Orphans Horse Rescue farm, which now hosts 43 formerly abused, neglected, or abandoned horses. Today these horses are not only living out the remainder of their lives (which can be as long as about 50 years), but also they are providing significant equine-assisted therapy to humans in need of help—it is people helping horses helping people. Dutchess County currently has a horse population of about 42,500 horses, but abused horses from all over the country are also welcomed to the Lucky Orphan’s farm. Volunteers, some of whom are doing community service, provide all the work on the farm. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/radiorotary/support

Horse Rescue Bakersfield Hooves-Paws.Org Episode #033 Our show is dedicated to a Horse Rescue in Bakersfield. I have always admired people who actively seek out horses or other animals in need, then help them out. While there are probably hundreds of these organizations across the country, there is always a need for more. On todays show we take a look at a local organization here in Bakersfield helping horses. Affectionately known as Whiskers Paws Hooves and Claws, the group's website is hooves-paws.org and is a 501c3 non-profit. Hooves and Paws helps in a number of ways - Whether it's rescuing horses from an abusive relationship or educating new owners of the basics of horse husbandry. They started out as just a group of people who saw a need. They knew they could make a difference. As an organization, the group soon realized they needed to have a concise and focused mission statement to guide them. Their mission statement is simple, yet effective: They want to: Supply financial support to foster homes and assist in horse rescue efforts and rehabilitation. Help with the medical financial burdens of animals suffering from abuse. Support local adoptions by donating funds to lower adoption fees, thus reducing the load placed on animal shelters. Promote a volunteer program that helps people who have struggled with abuse, medical issues, and other personal hardship's. Their volunteers learn marketing, animal care, particularly horse-keeping, and public relations through fundraising programs. Funded through donations, sponsorship, grants, and fundraisers Whiskers, Paws, Hooves, and Claws is making a difference as a horse rescue Bakersfield. Horse Rescue Bakersfield Success Stories Sampson Today Sampson Before Chance when rescued Chance Today We caught up with the group's director, Julie Sugg at a local stable where she boards and cares for the horses that are part of the organization. No matter where you live there is a group of people working hard to improve the welfare of horses. They can use your help. Look them up. Help them if you can. Maybe it's money. Maybe it's a few hours with helping with the horses (is that work? I don't think so). Maybe it's donating an old bit, bridle or saddle for a fundraiser. Any way you can help would be appreciated. If you would like to help Whiskers, Paws, Hooves, and Claws head on over to hooves-paw.org and find out how you can lend a hand. Or, better yet, like them on Facebook at Whiskers, Paws, Hooves, and Claws Contact Us We have well over 60 episodes up now and you can find them all for free on iTunes, with our Android App in the Amazon store, and now Stitcher, or wherever podcasts are distributed.
