Heather and Marley love Pie. Like, legit, they love their new adventures with their new horse, “We Love Pie!” Lynn and Regina loved hearing about the ins and outs of the hunter/jumper world. In this episode, Heather talks about her experience as a pleasure horseperson who went to the hunter/jumper segment of our industry. Heather and Marley are testing the waters and succeeding in this whole new horse world. Hair nets, daily horse baths with soap, daily tack cleaning, no showmanship classes, no trip to the show office on arrival, unique show class order, and on and on are the new norms in their horse show world. Horse ownership is a journey of responsibility and emotional connection, and in this episode, I'm thrilled to be joined by the ever-sparkling Nora Dhondt as we traverse the highs and lows that come with the territory. Our heartfelt discussion kicks off with the delicate issue of horse neglect, a serious and complex matter. We tackle this sensitive subject by weighing in on the necessity of understanding the full narrative before casting judgment, yet we also stress the importance of advocacy when a horse's welfare is at stake. As we chat, Nora and I pull back the curtain on the interpersonal dynamics at play within equestrian circles, particularly the challenging role of boarding stable proprietors. As Dr. Sandra Holt, I'm proud to share how Nora's own stable's unique policy fostered an environment where boarders were encouraged to nurture bonds through hands-on care with their equine companions. Highlighting the profound connections that can blossom between horse and rider, we reminisce about a young boy and his horse Leo, and their journey in the Hunter Jumper discipline. These narratives not only showcase the deep bonds formed but also illuminate the therapeutic influences horses can have on individuals grappling with disabilities or PTSD. Our conversation underscores the significance of being a voice for these noble creatures, advocating for their proper care and celebrating the remarkable relationships that enrich the lives of both human and horse.Wrapping up our conversation, Nora and I underscore the pivotal role of groundwork in horsemanship, drawing analogies to foundational life lessons that resonate beyond the stable. From the importance of respect and connection in horse training to the parallels with parenting, we share personal tales that exemplify the far-reaching impact of these principles. To all our listeners, we extend a warm invitation to keep the dialogue thriving by reaching out through our Horse Fix Facebook group. As we say farewell, Nora and I express our gratitude for your company on this journey, and we leave you with a fervent wish for a life adorned with the metaphorical blue ribbons of success and happiness.Support the Show.May all your blues be ribbons

If you're a regular to the Equestrian Voices podcast, you know that bitting is a subject we return to time and again. This is because bits have such a dramatic impact on a horse's happiness and performance - and it's an area we still have so much to learn about! So we decided to come back to this topic, this time bringing together top professionals from the Hunter/Jumper, Eventing, and Dressage disciplines to discuss how their ideas about bits and bitting developed over the course of their careers, and to see if there were any common threads between disciplines that could shed some new light on how to approach bitting for our own horses. During this roundtable, our four special guests also focused on how bitting differs (and is more often the same) between different areas of our industry, as well as misconceptions/pitfalls for each specific concentration. We also talk about how education plays such a huge role in choosing bits for our equine partners, and where we might be falling short as an industry in that area. GUESTS: Liza Towell Boyd Liz Halliday-Sharp Betsy Steiner Stephanie Brown-Beamer Additional resources: [LISTEN]Bits, Behaviors and Teeth: Misconceptions About Your Horse's Mouth [LISTEN]What's Your Horse Trying to Tell You About His Bit? From the saddle to the judge's booth, Joe Dotoli has an extensive history in the Hunter/Jumper sport. He has presided over show rings across the country; has had his hands in the makings of events and venues such as the New England Equitation Championships, HITS and Ox Ridge Hunt Club; and along with his wife Fran, is the trainer behind the beginnings of Olympic gold medalist Peter Wylde. Joe also has a strong passion for safety as chair of USHJA's Safety Committee. In the early 2000s, he spearheaded the rule that requires riders to wear helmets on showgrounds and recently led the charge to raise funds for the Virginia Tech Helmet Lab's testing. With the first round of testing done, Joe has his sights set on testing the newest form of safety equipment: air vests. We caught Joe after a day of judging in Ocala to discuss his impact on the sport and the future of rider safety. Tune in and read more from Joe about the importance of helmets in the March 2023 issue of In Stride at ushja.org/instride.
If you ride horses and have been on the internet in the past two months, chances are good you've heard about “that” helmet study -- specifically, the Virginia Tech Helmet Lab's Equestrian STAR Helmet Rating Project. On the plus side, we learned that a fancy helmet wasn't necessarily any safer than a basic, no frills (and much less expensive) helmet when it comes to protecting against brain injury and concussion. On the not so plus side, many of us suddenly found ourselves with lower scoring helmets and no clue what to do next. We had questions that we hadn't seen answered yet - not just about the study and its findings, but about helmets in general. Host Caroline Culbertson sat down with Dr. Barry Miller and Sydney Moriarity to tackle things like: What should the average rider take away from this study? How do riding helmets compare to helmets in other sports? What does Sydney, a rider herself, make of these findings and how could it inform our helmet shopping approach? What about helmets for different disciplines and levels? (Yes, there are differences!) Dr. Miller joined the VA Tech Helmet lab in 2018 as their Director of Outreach and Business, and was a part of the study from start to finish. Sydney Moriarty received her BS degree in Neuroscience from VA Tech and brought her first hand, practical experience to the table as an accomplished rider in the Hunter/Jumper discipline. In this discussion, we also dive into: The study's methodology, and what the STAR rating means What was so surprising about some of the outcomes High Energy Impact vs Low Energy Impact falls, and why each type plays a huge role in helmet construction and safety How hair length and style plays into helmet fit and safety (spoiler alert, long hair is ok!) Why you probably shouldn't put your helmet in the dishwasher… How helmet companies are responding to the study, and what next steps for the sport might be If you would like to see the full study, including the methodology, please head to the official Equestrian STAR Helmet Rating Project results and documentation page. Here's a summary of how the final Equestrian STAR Ratings was determined by Dr. Stefan Duma.

Thanks for joining us again for another amazing episode of What's your Why! Today, I'd like to start with a question, things that make you go hmmm kind of idea……When you hear people described as “Salt of the Earth” or “Earth Angels”, I'm sure that many of you have people that immediately come to mind. Who are they? People that you are close to that warrant the title and description. Well, I am over the top excited to introduce you (indirectly of course) to two more, in hopes that you will gain as much as I did from meeting them. Danny Robertshaw and Ron Danta are quite simply just that – earth angels and I am so grateful that they were able to give me time in their increasingly busy schedules. Apart from being successful horsemen in the Hunter/Jumper equestrian community, Danny and Ron set up an animal rescue in 2005, which stemmed from an immediate need to assist people and animals after Hurricane Katrina so tragically decimated New Orleans. They have since been able to secure their rescue as a 501C3 and have subsequently starred alongside their furry friends in an original documentary appropriately named “Life in the Doghouse”. We were given the opportunity to sit down with these amazing “Earth Angels” and discuss Their life in the Doghouse along with their passion for their extremely successful passion project, aptly named Danny and Ron's Rescue. If I could ask for your time and attention of this episode, I can assure you that my guests will not disappoint and I hope you'll find it as easy as I did to welcome them into your hearts and discover what Earth Angels can really look like. Visit https://dannyronsrescue.org/ for more information or to support the rescue directly.

Exactly two years ago today Hunter/Jumper rider Emily Karp, 21. suffered serious injuries when she fell from her horse while schooling over a grid of cavaletti. She sustained nerve damage to C5-6-7 in her neck which left her paralyzed in a wheelchair and needing to learn to walk again. Doctors told her parents: “Your daughter was this close to being paralyzed for the rest of her life.” However, it wasn’t long before her desire to get back on the horse again motivated her to ride her old faithful Morgan rescue When In Rome or “Romeo”—a Morgan pony rescue, who she knew would be safe to get her started again. The long road of rehab and recovery began but it wasn’t long after the accident that Emily decided that she wanted to turn professional; not even a frightening accident was going to deter her from doing what she loved. Now two years later and she has begun showing in hunters again with her mare H.E. Regality. For show notes and related links for this episode click HERE. Today I am speaking with Dave Farley. Dave is a well known and sought after farrier in the Sporthorse world. He is also well known and respected in the farrier world as a generous educator. Many a farrier and vet have ridden in the truck with Dave and his son Jay for a day of mentorship. I met Dave over dinner in Wellington one night and I was amazed at how much information he shared. He imparted upon me decades of knowledge for the mere cost of a dinner at Chilli’s. Dave’s passion for the job started when he was just 7 years old when he visited the local Blacksmith and Coal Mine Tool Maker shop in 1961. By thirteen he was nailing on shoes. In the seventies, he took over a Farrier Shop at the county fairgrounds in Coshocton, Ohio where he worked on Standardbreds. On the recommendation of a veterinarian named Dr. Gable, he then started working at Ohio State University as the resident farrier. Then in the eighties, as the standardbred industry started to dwindle he started working on Hunter/Jumper and Dressage horses in Columbus, Ohio. His quest for knowledge has never dwindled and he credits his first two mentors Mr. Fritz Bookman and Mr. Frank McGinnis for instilling in him this desire to learn and to pass it on. Dave’s list of accomplishments is long, so here are just a few of many: Past Resident Farrier at Ohio State University Farrier Instructor at Otterbein College Farrier for the American Quarter Horse Congress First Official Farrier of the National Reining Horse Association American Farriers Association “Clinician of the Year” Founding member of the North East Association of Equine Practitioners Founding Member of both the American Association of Professional Farriers and of the International Association of Professional Farriers as well as past president of both Member of the International Horseshoeing Hall of Fame He has also shod several horses competing in several Olympic Games I was very excited to have the opportunity to interview Dave. He has a lot of well-earned wisdom we all could benefit from. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did. So let's get to it….
