David Rachford is a Navy Veteran and Yoga Teacher. Like many, David grew up in a challenging environment as a teenager, and channeled his anger into competitive athletics. Sports were a positive escape from a rough childhood, but eventually he dropped out of high school. He failed out of Junior college twice, before joining the Navy to get off the farm. The Navy provided structure and challenge, and David earned a Navy Achievement medal, and was deployed to the Persian Gulf and Somalia during operation Restore Hope. A debilitating injury ended his Navy career early, and he struggled for years recoving from his injury and battling prescription drug abuse. Eventually, he found the practice of yoga and restored his health. He's gone on to run Marathons (6 and counting) hiked the 225 mile John Muir Trail, and now teaches yoga in Santa Barbara. He's also the creator of CombatMat; a premium, natural yoga mat, designed for men as the ultimate foundation for a strong yoga practice. Listen in as Dave shares his journey to discover his unique form of impact.

David Rachford wanted to get off the farm and joined the military. He had a dream of going to explosive ordnance disposal school. First, he had to do some time as a Naval Fire Fighter, stationed on the USS Abraham Lincoln, which was an aircraft carrier, on the Persian Golf. An unfortunate accident happened while training and took away his chances leaving him crippled and devastated at only 23 years old. David slipped into depression and ended up facing a narcotic addiction. Today he is a successful web developer, host of two podcasts and a blog. He has succeeded in healing and has come today to share the story of his difficult journey. He tells us how he overcomes his injury and addiction, weight loss of over 70 lbs, and how he created a healthy lifestyle. There seems to be a definite link to mental and physical health. By listening to others, my hope is that you may be able to avoid going down some of these dark allies by finding positive people to surround yourselves with and finding ways to keep your head up while you follow your own healing journey. Listening to Davids story is sure to help you get a good leg up on your own journey! #20 Vipassana Meditation: David Rachford on Seeing Things as They Really Are

The Longevity Lifestyle Podcast with David Rachford

In this episode, I share my experience from my second visit to the California Vipassana Center where I recently sat for a 10 day silent meditation retreat.  I discuss meditation, and how to start and maintain a practice. Vipassana is one of the world's most ancient meditative techniques. It was practiced 25 centuries ago by Gotama the Buddha, who said he had rediscovered a much older practice. After his enlightenment in 528 BCE, the Buddha spent the remaining 45 years of his life teaching the way out of suffering. Vipassana is the essence of what he taught. The Buddha's teaching is known by the general term Dhamma (Sanskrit: Dharma). For five centuries Vipassana helped millions of people in India, the Buddha's homeland. This era saw the matchless reign of the great Emperor Asoka (273-236 BCE) who united India and initiated a golden age of peace and prosperity. Asoka also sent ambassadors of Dhamma to all the neighboring kingdoms (including what has become Myanmar in modern times), thereby spreading both the practice and the words of the Buddha. After about 500 years the practice of Vipassana had disappeared from India. Fortunately it was maintained by a continuous chain of meditation teachers in the neighboring country of Myanmar (Burma) until the present day. In our time, Vipassana has been reintroduced to India and to people from all over the world by S. N. Goenka, a retired industrialist of Indian heritage who was born in Myanmar. He learned the technique of Vipassana from Sayagyi U Ba Khin, the renowned lay Vipassana teacher who was the first to teach westerners in English. U Ba Khin appointed him to teach Vipassana in 1969.    If you like what you hear, please subscribe, rate and review on iTunes.
