Ade and Claudette Faison have worked in the field of human development for more than 50 years and 40 years, respectively. Together, that's more than 90 combined years working to support others in transformation and lives of possibility. It's no surprise, then, that they both came to do the Hoffman Process along the way. Yet, it's all still fresh in their minds. They remember specific instances from their Process. Claudette shares her experience at the Process when she was having a conversation - a quad talk - with her intellect and Spiritual Self. She was asking her Spiritual Self, "Are you Buddha, are you God?" And then she began to laugh and laugh. She says it was like finally solving a mystery. For Ade, he remembers coming home having just completed the Process. He walked into a party that Claudette was hosting for her friends. Usually, Ade would hold back, waiting for an opening to join a party like that. But fresh out of the Process, he jumped right into the mix without hesitation. He had changed at the Process, and it was noticeable to everyone. Through Unlocking Futures, Ade and Claudette's company, they work with people on the margins of life. The work they do supports people in unlocking a better future for themselves, their families, and their communities. In the past, Ade and Claudette, and Unlocking Futures, partnered with the Hoffman Institute to create an advanced course called "The Quantum Leap Process." Drew taught alongside Ade in one of these courses. Listen in as Ade and Claudette share powerful stories of the work they do to unlock futures for many. We hope you enjoy this lively conversation with Ade, Claudette, and Drew. More about Ade: For more than half a century, Ade has functioned as a highly skilled facilitator in Human Development. His work extends globally, including the United States, Africa, the Caribbean, Mexico, Europe, and South America. He works with youth from 8 years old to senior adults. In the first 25 years, he became a featured performer and leader of transformational workshops at the National Black Theatre in Harlem. This was followed by 35 years at Youth At Risk, Inc., aka Unlocking Futures, Inc. Ade earned a bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from Howard University, a Certificate of Completion from the Institute for Not-For-Profit Management from Columbia University‘s Graduate Business School, a Master of Arts from Teachers College, Columbia University, and membership in Kappa Delta Pi, the International Honor Society in Education. Ade's non-traditional studies began with Dr. Barbara Ann Teer, founder of the National Black Theatre. He credits his competence to participation with Landmark Education, Practices in Siddha Yoga and Vipassana Meditation, Courses in Ontological Design, the Hoffman Quadrinity Process, courses from the Hoffman Institute, and 21 years of global travel with Circles of Light Ministries. Ade acknowledges his 42-year marriage with Claudette C. Faison as the continuing catalyst that ignites his vision, work ethic, and stand for excellence and equanimity. More about Claudette: Hailing from St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, Claudette Anita C'Faison is a master at delivering transformational and spiritual programs. With a mission to bring healing to generational trauma and poverty, she leaves people empowered to create and be accountable for their reality and the lives they have made for themselves. For more than 40 years, Claudette has made a difference for over 15,000 marginalized families and children on every continent except Antarctica. In partnerships with family court, juvenile and adult justice programs, she creates and produces programs for inmates, returning citizens, and children of incarcerated parents. Claudette has been doing this work alongside her husband for 41 years. Claudette has been educated both traditionally and non-traditionally. She completed the traditional path in the seminary.

Show notes / PDF & Infographic / Free Audiobook / Have you ever wondered why your brain feels like it's on a hamster wheel that never stops? Today, we're diving into the game-changing classic Mindfulness in Plain English – the book that's transformed millions of scattered minds into islands of calm. Key figures and topics: Mindfulness, Meditation, Present-Moment, Awareness, Self-Discovery, Buddhism, Self-awareness, Meditation, buddhism, personal development, Mindfulness, Audible, Mindfulness in Plain English, Vipassana Meditation, StoryShots, Bhante Henepola Gunaratana, Eight Mindful Steps to Happiness, Journey to Mindfulness, Bhavana Society, story shorts The episode explores Bhante Henepola Gunaratana's book 'Mindfulness in Plain English', offering an in-depth look at mindfulness meditation and its potential to transform personal awareness. The book provides a practical, accessible approach to meditation that demystifies the practice, showing how it can help individuals break free from mental habits, reduce stress, and find inner peace. Gunaratana, a Buddhist monk with over 80 years of teaching experience, presents mindfulness as a method for understanding one's inner world and developing a more present, conscious way of living. The episode delves into key concepts of mindfulness, such as the illusion of a fixed self, the impact of ego, and the importance of observing thoughts without judgment. It explains Vipassana meditation as a technique for developing awareness, helping practitioners learn to focus on their breath, notice sensations and emotions without labeling them, and gradually build mental strength and clarity. The discussion emphasizes that mindfulness is not about achieving a mystical state, but about developing a practical skill that can be integrated into daily life. Ultimately, the book and podcast suggest that mindfulness is a transformative practice that extends beyond formal meditation, offering benefits in personal growth, emotional regulation, and interpersonal relationships. By practicing consistent awareness, individuals can learn to respond more thoughtfully to life's challenges, reduce suffering caused by disconnection from the present moment, and cultivate a deeper appreciation for everyday experiences. The key message is that mindfulness is accessible to everyone and can be developed gradually through patient, consistent practice. (00:00:00) Introduction (00:03:06) About Bhante Henepola Gunaratana (00:03:34) Modern life lacks fulfillment (00:10:38) How to Begin Meditation. (00:12:32) Embrace the struggle. (00:13:43) Why does meditation feel difficult? Mindfulness is a practical approach to finding inner peace by developing present-moment awareness, not an esoteric or religious practice Most human suffering stems from living in the past or future, rather than experiencing the present moment fully Meditation is a skill anyone can learn, requiring only consistency and patience, not special abilities or long hours of practice The 'self' is an illusion - our identity is fluid, and we can free ourselves from ego-driven reactions by observing our thoughts without judgment External achievements and material possessions cannot bring lasting happiness; true contentment comes from internal awareness and acceptance Vipassana meditation helps train the nervous system to respond calmly to stress by developing insight into the impermanent nature of thoughts and emotions Mindfulness is a transformative practice that extends beyond formal meditation, potentially improving relationships, emotional regulation, and overall life satisfaction Personal growth through mindfulness is gradual - small, consistent practices accumulate to create profound changes in perception and response to life's challenges Related books: The Power of Now Learn more about your ad choices. What happens when you sit in complete silence for 10 days—no talking, no technology, no eye contact, no distractions? In this episode, I take you inside my Vipassana meditation retreat, where I spent over 100 hours in silence and came face-to-face with my mind in ways I never expected. From nearly having a panic attack on Day 4, to watching a cobra almost kill my neighbor, to a tiny fly teaching me a profound lesson on suffering—this experience rewired my brain, changed how I see technology, and redefined what it means to be human in the modern world. What Is Vipassana Meditation? Vipassana, which means “insight” or “clear-seeing,” is one of the oldest meditation techniques in the world. Rooted in the teachings of Gautama Buddha, it's designed to cultivate awareness, equanimity, and liberation from suffering. During the retreat, I followed the traditional Vipassana rules, including: Noble Silence – No speaking, no eye contact, no gestures. No technology – No phones, books, or journaling. No intoxicants or distractions – Just meditation, walking, and sitting. Complete surrender to the schedule – Wake-up bells at 4 AM, over 10 hours of meditation per day. But what I thought would be a peaceful experience turned into one of the hardest things I've ever done. This episode is an invitation to slow down, unplug, and reconnect with yourself in ways you never imagined. Would you ever try Vipassana? Listen now and decide for yourself.

What can we learn about ourselves when we silence the world outside, quieten our voices, and make peace with discomfort, in the knowledge that everything in life is impermanent? At the end of October, I stepped into my fifth silent Vipassana retreat to ask myself that question once more. I left my voice, my phone, my negativities, and my niggling thoughts at the door for 10 days, committing my mind and body to the ancient Indian practice of ‘seeing things as they really are'.Come with me for a special, soul-searching episode, as I bring you into the inner workings of my mind during the retreat. I share the wisdom I found along the way, and why practising mindful, non-reactive observation forms the roots needed for effective facilitation, leadership, and life! Rochna Poddar is an integrative health and wellness coach and her practise was founded after understanding the need for a holistic perspective on our health. After struggling with health issues at the age of 16 that remained undiagnosed, she began exploring different ways of nurturing mind and body through ancient practices like Pranic healing and Tibetan Buddhism, programs like Art of Living, Vipassana Meditation and lifestyle changes with yoga and plant-based nutrition. As an adult, when she was diagnosed with insulin-resistance and PCOD, she was now armed with the knowledge to heal herself using a variety of methods. Carrying this wisdom forward, she's worked with a variety of clients, guiding them towards feeling better on the inside and more confident on the outside. An Integrative Health and Wellness Coach and Mind-Body Medicine Practitioner certified by Saybrook University, CA, USA. I'm also completing certifications as a Plant-Based Nutritionist from Food Matters Institute, Australia. https://www.linkedin.com/in/rochnapoddar/ https://www.itsabrandnewday.in/
Aaron reconnects with Sydney C., a facilitator and extraordinary human being, to explore themes of surrender, leadership, and authenticity. Reflecting on their first meeting years ago in Bali, we discuss the transformational journeys we've both experienced since. Sydney recalls a powerful memory from her early days in Bali and how certain moments and people have triggered profound shifts in her. Our conversation delves into the ever-evolving relationship with darkness and surrender, highlighting Sydney's recent journey with her book release and her exploration of surrendered leadership. We explore the difficulties and rewards of letting go, embodying vulnerability, and surrendering to a higher power, touching on the complexities of not always knowing what's next.Sydney opens up about her recent experiences, including a Vipassana meditation retreat that significantly helped her differentiate between her mind and true self. We transition to discerning authentic leadership from performative personas often seen in the spiritual and coaching realms, sharing our personal experiences with mentors and influencers who may not fully embody the teachings they espouse. We stress the importance of genuine connection and presence, discussing the loneliness epidemic and how social media contributes to disconnection. Sydney expresses a sense of humility and deep reevaluation of her purpose, focusing more on genuine support and less on marketing and sales strategies. I reflect on my journey, my goals, and my vision for the future, emphasizing the ongoing process of surrender and the deep trust in life's unfolding paths.

How I prepared for my 10-day silent Vipassana meditation, how I signed up, what I packed as well as my expectations for the silent retreat.
Vipassana Meditation is a practice that assists us in connecting to our real sense of self, my "Jacquiness" if you will. In this episode we look at how we can connect with the physical reaction to being falsely accused of something and how that makes us feel and react. It's ok to be real, it's when we think we are REALLY REAL that we get in trouble!
Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Vipassana Meditation and Active Inference: A Framework for Understanding Suffering and its Cessation, published by Benjamin Sturgeon on March 24, 2024 on LessWrong. I want to thank Jan Kulveit, Tomáš Gavenčiak, and Jonathan Shock for their extensive feedback and ideas they contributed to this work and for Josh Burgener and Yusuf Heylen for their proofreading and comments. I would also like to acknowledge the Epistea Residency and its organisers where much of the thinking behind this work was done. This post aims to build towards a theory of how meditation alters the mind based on the ideas of active inference (ActInf). ActInf has been growing in its promise as a theory of how brains process information and interact with the world and has become increasingly validated with a growing body of work in the scientific literature. Why bring the idea of ActInf and meditation together? Meditation seems to have a profound effect on the experience of people who practise it extensively, and in many cases purports to help people to come to great insight about themselves, reality, and in many cases profoundly alters their relationship to their lived experience. ActInf seems to promise a legible framework for understanding some of the mechanisms that are at play at the root of our experience. Considering these ideas seem to both be pointing at something fundamental about how we experience the world it stands to reason they might be talking about some of the same things in different languages. The hope is that we can use these two to explore these two theories and start to bridge some of the gap in science in providing a theoretical explanation for how these meditative techniques work. This post will be quite speculative in nature without me providing much in the way of experimental evidence. This is a weakness in the work that I may try to address later but for now I would like to stick to what the theories say and how we can fit them together. I will focus on the technique of Vipassana meditation and in a future post I will examine Anapana and Metta meditation. I'll be talking about these techniques because I have a reasonable body of personal experience with them and because I have found their practice leads to fairly predictable and replicable results in those who practise them. My personal experience is the source of much of the discussion below. Anecdotally, I have found that thinking about suffering in the way described below has helped me to recognise and escape from painful thought cycles where I was able to realise I was generating needless prediction error by simply going back to observing reality through sensations. This has been very helpful to me. A quick intro to Active Inference My goal in this section is to give a barebones summary of some key concepts in ActInf that we will use to examine various meditative practices. My focus will be on defining terms and concepts so that if you have never heard of active inference before you can have the context to follow this post and judge the merits of the arguments yourself. The precise neuroscience is not explored here, but by hypothesising we can work towards a story that seems to fit our observations. ActInf is a theory that tries to explain how and why agents (in our context this refers to all living things) act in the world in the way that they do. The key concept of ActInf is that the primary objective of an ActInf agent is to minimise the gap between its predictions of the world and how the world actually appears. This happens through 2 methods: it improves the accuracy of its world model, or generative model, by updating that model with new information, and by taking action in the world to bring the world more in line with the predictions of its generative model. Generative models and preferences ActInf hinges on the ...

My guest is Sam Harris, Ph.D. Sam earned his bachelor's degree in philosophy from Stanford University and his doctorate (Ph.D.) in neuroscience from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). He is the author of multiple best-selling books and is a world-renowned public-facing intellectual on meditation, consciousness, free will, psychedelics and neuroscience. He is also the creator of Waking Up and the host of the Making Sense podcast. In this episode, we discuss meditation as a route to understanding “the self” and experiencing consciousness, not just changing one's conscious state. Sam describes several meditation techniques and their benefits, including how meditation fundamentally changes our worldview and how it can be merged seamlessly into daily life. It can help us overcome universal challenges such as distractibility and persistent, internal dialogue (“chatter”) to allow for deep contentment and pervasive shifts in our awareness, all while acknowledging the more immediate stress-lowering and memory-improving effects of meditation. We also discuss the therapeutic use of psychedelics and the mechanistic similarities between the benefits of a psychedelic journey and long-term meditation practices. And we discuss the rationale behind Sam's recent decision to close his social media (Twitter) account. This episode should interest anyone wanting to learn more about the higher order functions of the brain, the brain-body connection, consciousness and, of course, meditation and why and how to meditate for maximum benefit.
