Dylan Powell was nominated as a Beck's Player with Heart for his commitment and passion on and off the course, track, and mat. His favorite part about high school sports is the chance to grow as a leader and learn from others. Agriculture means everything to Dylan. Growing up on a farm, Dylan has learned to appreciate the value of farming and what all it provides. Without the strong base of learned to work his hardest and expect the same work ethic from those around him, Dylan would not be where he is today. Dylan is involved in cross country, wrestling, track, forensics, student council, 4-H, and FFA. He also helps at community food distributions, youth wrestling programs, local fun run fundraisers, and volunteers with local marathons. After graduation, Dylan hopes to run in college while pursuing a degree in either agricultural or mechanical engineering. The Other Ones Foundation https://toofound.org/ -from their website-"The Other Ones Foundation was born out of a desire to find new and innovative approaches to serving Austin's homeless community. TOOF's origins involve a deep dive of outreach and interviewing in encampments, asking unhoused people what THEY felt was missing from the homelessness response system. Our most common finding was that people felt directionless and disempowered to connect with their community during the day, while waiting to get into shelters or access other services. This gave way to our Workforce First Program, which offers unhoused people an extremely low barrier opportunity to get a day's work. The dignity and empowerment of working in a group setting and giving back to your community, complimented by income and case management, serves as a major stepping stone to getting our homeless friends on the path to a more fulfilling life." How does animal rights activism and veganism fit within the struggle against settler colonialism? That is precisely the question that Dylan Powell attempts to answer in his series "Veganism in the Occupied Territories: Anti-Colonialism and Animal Liberation." Dylan Powell is the Co-Founder of Marineland Animal Defense, he is active in the animal and earth liberation movements, as well as involved in solidarity organizing with the Haudenosaunee of the Grand River, the migrant justice advocacy community and at risk youth in the Niagara Region. Dylan is graduate of Brock University (Honours History) and current Addiction Education student at McMaster University in Hamilton. In this episode we speak with Dylan to discuss more about how his personal upbringing and involvement in animal liberation and solidarity movements have shaped his politics. We also briefly mention the work of Dr. John Sorenson, who recently spoke at The University of Winnipeg about his most recent book, "Constructing Ecoterrorism: Capitalism, Specieism and Animal Rights", which is available via Fernwood Publishing.

Defender Radio: The Podcast for Wildlife Advocates and Animal Lovers
A funny thread emerged when we compiled this week's episode of Defender Radio: the lines in our lives. While listening to the interviews, we realized that there are so many crossovers when discussing animal welfare, advocacy and activism. Cary Rentola of the WOLF Sanctuary draws a line between wanting to be close to nature and bringing it too close; Dr. Hal Herzog explores the lines we set up between the pets in our lives, the wildlife we protect and the animals many continue to eat; and Dylan Powell discusses the lines we sometimes must draw to protest wrongdoings. Defender Radio is presented by Gates Wildlife Control and The Association for the Protection of Fur-Bearing Animals.
