A (relatively) in-depth analysis of the The Clash together with their 1979 album 'London Calling' in (just under) thirty minutes. The Clash achieved critical and commercial success in the UK with the release of their eponymous debut album and second album Give 'Em Enough Rope however, it was their experimental third album London Calling, released in 1979, that earned them popularity in the United States.Produced by Guy Stevens at Wessex Sound Studios, the album bridged the traditional punk rock sound with a new wave aesthetic. London Calling also reflects the band's growing interest in styles beyond their punk roots, including reggae, rockabilly, ska, New Orleans R&B, pop, lounge jazz, and hard rock. The album artwork was designed by artist Ray Lowry and was an homage to Elvis Presley's self-titled debut album. The cover features a photograph of Paul Simonon smashing his Fender Precision Bass (now on display at the Museum of London) against the stage at the Palladium in New York City on 20 September 1979. Pennie Smith, who photographed the band for the album, originally did not want the photograph to be used as the image was not in focus. In 2004, a 25th-anniversary Legacy Edition was released with a bonus CD and DVD in digipack packaging. The bonus CD features The Vanilla Tapes, missing recordings made by the band in mid-1979. The DVD includes The Last Testament – The Making of London Calling, a film by Don Letts, as well as previously unseen video footage and music videos. London Calling was among the ten album covers chosen by the Royal Mail for a set of Classic Album Cover postage stamps issued in 2010.In this episode I am in discussion with Dr. Andrew Webber.I hope you enjoy the podcast and do leave feedback if you like what you have heard.Mathew Woodall

The Specials - Punky Reggae Party Bob Marley- Public Image PIL- London Calling The Clash- Civilization Don Letts (feat. If "influencer" had been a thing back in the 70s, Don Letts would have been the master. He's one of the most important figures in British music and culture, but it's not just because of him being in Big Audio Dynamtie (which he was) or because he's a revolutionary film director (which he is) or because he's a successful DJ (which he is). It's because in the late 70s, he was in the nexus of music, fashion, punk rock and culture and brought the sounds of underground dub and reggae to creatives like the Clash who would go on and change the world. So many stories from that period begin with "I was at a party at Don Letts's house when...". Don has recently completed his first solo album, Outta Sync which will be out in September. Don discusses all of it, the videos he directed, the times hanging out with Bob Marley, joining B.A.D. and all the rest. Enjoy!  www.donletts.com www.patreon.com/thehustlepod

In this episode, Chris Hawkins speaks with a DJ who has a firm grasp of their broadcasting medium; former Radio 1 and current BBC Radio Wales & Radio Cymru presenter Huw Stephens. Huw's obsession began with magic but as soon as he heard Virgin Radio 1215 AM at an impressionable age, he quickly turned his hand to Hospital Radio before landing a job at Radio 1 at the age of seventeen. Huw's journey would appear to have started at the top but he's never stopped wanting to learn and make the most of those opportunities … although there may be a former Children's TV star he's still too ashamed to thank (!) From club to radio and every other music DJ in between; Chris Hawkins warms up his guests before asking them to pick a set of 5 questions from a box of 45 and there's always an apocalyptic set closer too! In Series 6 Chris cues up eight more episodes of life stories & experiences, tips & techniques, to find out just how the minds of much-loved DJs work. Her tenacity and talent paid off with a slot on Virgin Radio that led to her becoming a long standing fixture at Absolute since its launch back in 2008. She's many strings to her bow with popular podcasts a part of that repertoire but music remains her passion and she's even recently begun playing events which she says is a whole new discipline! Earlier this month, KEXP celebrated a holiday we invented called International Clash Day. The Clash stood for a lot of things. As Clash member Joe strummer once said, “We're anti-fascist, we're anti-violence, we're anti-racist, and we're pro-creative. We're against ignorance.” As part of the celebration, Larry Mizell Jr. chatted with The Clash's videographer Don Letts about the band's legacy and the culture clash of punk and reggae.Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/sound/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Supernova International Ska Festival started in 2013 as a house show that got so big, it was moved to a local brewery. Though it took a few years before it got the name Supernova, and that first show wasn't even a festival; just a kick-ass show with Chris Murray and King Django. Every year, Supernova has grown. 2023 is looking to be the biggest and best version of the festival to date with acts from all over the world like Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra, Fishbone, The Dualers, Don Letts, Stranger Cole, The Planet Smashers, Catbite, Out Of Control Army, and so much more. Today we talk about all things Supernova with co-founder Tim Receveur (He founded the festival with his wife April) and creative director Mike DeMatteo. We talk about the festival's history and dig into what people can expect at this year's festival. We also chat about some fun stories from Supernova's previous festivals. And there are plenty of fun stories there! We talk about Derrick Morgan's epic 2017 performance, 2020's quarantine edition (fundraiser for Alpha Boys School), and how Taylor Morden managed to film several interviews for Pick It Up - Ska In The 90s at the festival in 2018 during a storm. We also talk about Hepcat playing the festival (Their first east coast concert in decades!), the creation of the Rude Girl Revue and Tim lets us know how he managed to get Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra to headline this year's festival.   Support the show

Ahead of Jamaican Independence Day, Ellen E Jones and Mark Kermode immerse themselves in one of the island's greatest exports, The Harder They Come, marking the film's 50th anniversary. The Harder They Come was a sensation, but it took a while for its vibrations to be heard around the world. In 1972, the premiere in Kingston brought the area to a complete standstill. Outside of Jamaica, the film helped introduce reggae music to millions, thanks to its Jimmy Cliff-driven soundtrack. Exploring the film's continuing legacy, Ellen hears from one of its stars, Carl Bradshaw, and the film's publicist Barbara Blake-Hannah, for whom the movie was so life-changing that she left the UK and moved to Jamaica where she later became a Member of Parliament. Mark speaks to DJ, broadcaster, musician and filmmaker Don Letts, whose film Dancehall Queen is a homage to The Harder They Come. Mark also talks to music supervisor Ed Bailie who worked closely with Steve McQueen on his Small Axe films, including Lovers Rock which also owes a great debt to this cult classic. Ellen and Mark also look at what The Harder They Come did, or did not do, for the Jamaican film industry, and the films that followed it - including Rockers, Countryman, and Babylon. iTunes          Spotify          Youtube           Patreon Bob Gruen is one of the most well-known and respected photographers in rock and roll. From John Lennon to Johnny Rotten; Muddy Waters to the Rolling Stones; Elvis to Madonna; Bob Dylan to Bob Marley; Tina Turner to Debbie Harry, he has captured the music scene for over forty years in photographs that have gained worldwide recognition. Shortly after John Lennon moved to New York in 1971, Bob became John and Yoko's personal photographer and friend, making photos of their working life as well as private moments. In 1974 he created the iconic images of John Lennon wearing a New York City t-shirt and standing in front of the Statue of Liberty making the peace sign – two of the most popular of Lennon's images. As chief photographer for Rock Scene Magazine in the '70s, Bob specialized in candid, behind the scenes photo features. He toured extensively with the emerging punk and new wave bands including the New York Dolls, Sex Pistols, Clash, Ramones, Patti Smith Group and Blondie. Bob has also worked with major rock acts such as Led Zeppelin, The Who, David Bowie, Tina Turner, Elton John, Aerosmith, Kiss and Alice Cooper. In 1989, he documented the epic trip to Russia of the “Moscow Music Peace Festival” featuring Ozzy Osbourne, Mötley Crüe and Bon Jovi. For many years Bob was the official photographer for the New Music Seminar held in New York City, covering dozens of aspiring new bands in the course of a summer week. This seminal body of work reflects a profound commitment and long-standing personal friendship with the artists. His wealth of personal experiences and uncanny memory provide the most illuminating and comprehensive histories of rock youth culture. “All Dolled Up,” a DVD documentary made by Bob Gruen and Nadya Beck of their early '70s video footage of the New York Dolls, was released in 2005 with a follow-up DVD, “Lookin' Fine On Television” released in 2011. In the spring of 2007 FAAP University in Sao Paulo, Brazil, presented an exhibition of Bob Gruen's work. Titled ROCKERS, the exhibition attracted 40,000 visitors. The ROCKERS exhibition was also shown from April to July 2008 at Morrison Hotel Gallery on the Bowery in New York City. Bob's “Sid Vicious with Hot Dog” photo was acquired by The National Portrait Gallery, London, in 1999 for their permanent collection. The Experience Music Project, Seattle, acquired his “Clash Live in Boston”, “Tina Turner Multiple Image”, and “Bloody Sid Vicious” photos for their permanent collection in March 2012. In 2011 award winning director Don Letts made a feature length film titled ‘Rock & Roll Exposed – the Photography of Bob Gruen' including interviews with Iggy Pop, Debbie Harry, Alice Cooper, Yoko Ono, Billie Joe Armstrong and many more. Bob was presented in June 2004 with MOJO Magazine's prestigious Honours List Award for Classic Image in London and in November 2010 he was inducted into the Long Island Music Hall of Fame. For his many charitable contributions, Bob received the first ever John Lennon Real Love Award in December 2014 at the 32nd Annual John Lennon Tribute Concert. More recently he has also photographed Green Day's tour of Europe, Yoko Ono/Plastic Ono Band, Iggy Pop, Ozzy Osbourne, AC/DC, Jesse Malin, Ryan Adams, Courtney Love, The Strypes and other new popular acts. Question for you: If you had the chance to spend an hour in the car with one of your musical heroes—you are driving—what music would you play? Believe it or not, this is a difficult, stressful decision. And my next guest, northwest London-based Emily Capell (https://www.emilycapell.co.uk/), faced this very dilemma. Emily, who literally grew up on the Clash and its various offshoots, is an old soul. Her music is inspired by, well, the Clash, Big Audio Dynamite, but it goes beyond that. You'll hear some Sinatra, you'll hear some ‘60s doowop, you'll hear a lot of ska, Blondie, you name it. In this exhilarating interview, Emily and I talk about two songs from her 2019 debut album Combat Frock—Bonanza and Ipso Calypso—and then we talk about two newer songs, 2020's Flamingo, recorded with the London-based Dreadzone (https://www.dreadzone.com/), and a cover of Big Audio Dynamite's E=MC2, recorded with the song's co-writer, legendary punk-rock DJ and studio innovator Don Letts. We discuss what it was like to record with Letts, one of her heroes, and the troubles and trials of being a musician in a pandemic. Mostly, though, we talk about the music. Emily is one of the freshest talents recording today, so go grab your beer, sit down, and welcome Emily Capell to For Songs.

Welcome, welcome, welcome to the Distraction Pieces Podcast with Scroobius Pip!This week Pip is joined by the entire We Are Lizards crew for the conclusion!(this is the concluding part of a 2 part special, so if you haven't heard part 1, now would be a great time to catch up!)What is We.Are.Lizards, you ask? What, are you kidding me right now? Just playing. For the uninitiated, We.Are.Lizards is the legendary club night founded, developed and evolved by Pip and the whole entourage right here. It took place in the Book Club in Shoreditch, featuring the resident cast here but also a splendid selection of very special guests who you will surely be aware of… Zane Lowe, DJ Yoda, Don Letts, Lindy Layton, ah come on, so many more. But as with most regular club nights, to many it became a high point of the month, a family, dare I say a home, but also a meeting point and proper hot spot for so many people as well. It was always well attended, staffed, and co-ordinated, and the behind the scenes life is as fascinating and awesome as the on the scene one. So please, get yourself appropriately prepared for a glimpse into a brilliant club night, and hear the origin story from the people who made it (aside from the punters of course!) - PART 2 OF 2!WE.ARE.LIZARDS LINKSTHE BOOK CLUBSCROOBIUS PIPSTU WHIFFENDJ DESTRUCTION • (new track here)DISCOTHEQUE CREDITSCHRIS GLASSENHARDCORE LISTING with DJ YODA on vinylSCROOBIUS PIP on INSTAGRAMSCROOBIUS PIP on PATREONDEBRISNORTH STAR RISINGPOD BIBLESPEECH DEVELOPMENT RECORDSDISTRACTION PIECES NETWORK on FACEBOOKDISTRACTION PIECES NETWORK on INSTAGRAMDISTRACTION PIECES PODCAST ARCHIVE See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

‘Of the people. By the people. For the people' Filmmaker, DJ and musician, Don Letts, takes us back to the ‘f*cked up' social political climate of the late 70s where the white, working class youth of London were beginning to create their own soundtrack.  As Don introduced his mates to the rebel sound of reggae, its basslines and messaging fed into the genre and subculture that would eventually become known as punk. Musician, filmmaker and DJ, Don Letts has curated a season of films about punk for the British Film Institute, in London. He explains how Punk on Film brings together a broad range of documentary, archive footage and feature films that draw attention to the diversity of the punk movement, its lineage, and influence today.A significant aspect of punk was that allowed women to defy the music industry's notions of beauty and sex appeal. Women became performers in their own right, wrote their own songs, played their own instruments, and even became the main protagonist of movies about the music industry - such as Hazel O'Connor in Breaking Glass. We hear about the role of women in punk from Hazel O'Connor, vocalist and guitarist Jess Allanic, and Dr Helen Reddington.Photographers George Quann-Barnett and Marco Grey - from Wot Do You Call It - and Olivia Rose discuss the importance of documenting the grime scene, which they argue is the most unique and significant music subculture to explode in Britain since punk. Plus Scottee, an artist who describes himself as "fat and working class, with a penchant for ladies clothes", argues that queer drag and performers like Bourgeois & Maurice and Jonny Woo - with their kitten heels, bondage outfits and 'attitude' - are the punks of today.Presenter: Samira Ahmed Producer: Angie Nehring.
