In the first half of this two-part episode, author Rae Wilde ("Merciless Waters," I Do Not Apologize For My Position on Men") returns to talk about her upcoming novella "I Can Fix Her" (June 3, CLASH Books). They discuss the terror of "nightmare logic," Rae's interest in exploring toxic sapphic romance, the "Wilde Test" (i.e. decentering men altogether as significant drivers of plot in narrative), the unique lure of obsession, and the hazards of power in relationships. Rae and Scotty also dive into an impromptu conversation about Darren Aronofsky's divisive 2017 psychological horror film "mother!" In the second half, Scotty welcomes Albuquerque-based actor Peter Diseth ("Roswell, New Mexico," "Better Call Saul") to talk about his performance as Jorg in the new satirical horror film "Opus" (2025), starring Ayo Edebiri, John Malkovich, Juliette Lewis, and written/directed by newcomer Mark Anthony Green. Aside from discussing his experience on the film itself, they spend a few minutes on Peter's background in the New Mexico film and theatre scene, explore the fine line between comedy and horror, and consider the trend towards "the horror of politeness" in film like "Opus," "The Invitation" (2015), "Speak No Evil" (2022), and "The Menu" (2022). Being able to see 5 seconds into the future may not seem like much, but in Alexander Boldizar's latest novel, The Man Who Saw Seconds, it's enough to change the world. This fast-paced story explores the dynamics of power structures, the line between good and evil, and the power of family. And it invites the reader to consider some serious questions:Can you return to what you were after you've crossed the line? How far is too far to save the people you love?Just how powerful is 5 seconds of local omniscience? In the first of our two-part discussion, I chat with Alexander about his path from law to writing, publishing with Clash Books and navigating the financial side of bookselling, and how to craft an entertaining story that can still be a vehicle for the exploration of ideologies.Books of his we discuss: The Ugly, The Man Who Saw SecondsFurther info on this and other episodes can be found at AlternateFutures.co.ukIf you're on Wordpress.com, you can follow the podcast at alternatefuturespodcast.wordpress.comFinally, you can follow my articles on science fiction, socio-technological issues, and futurism at alternatefutures.substack.com

The era of ska shame is officially over, and ska fans no longer need to hide in the basement, skanking alone. The creator of the popular podcast In Defense of Ska has doubled down on defending the checkered flag genre with his new edition of In Defense of Ska: Ska Now More Than Ever Edition (Clash Books, 2024). Updated journalistic essays, personal stories, historical investigations, and a brand-new epilogue exploring ska's “lost years” serve as a much-needed crash course on the hundreds of bands, big or small, that formed the passionate community that continues to love and evolve America's much-maligned and infamously underrated ska scene. Christoph Paul is an overdue interview for me. He is the managing editor of CLASH Books, of course, they are one of my publishers and Christoph is an editor I have worked with. He is an award-winning author who cut his teeth writing erotica satires under the name Mandy DeSandra which he self-published and learned the publishing biz long before he and his wife author Leza Cantoral started Clash Books. They publish risky and powerful indie books that have led to them recently expanding to include national distribution and a roster of diverse writers. He also plays bass and sings lead vocals in alt-rock band The Dionysus Effect who recently released their first single. In this interview we talk about writing, publishing, editing novels, and writing music. In a very strange and wild episode of Textual Healing, I got a chance to interview Leza Cantoral who is one of my favorite people in the lit world today! It gets weird, it gets dark, and it actually gets pretty damn hysterical. It's lit. Leza is a Xicana writer & Editor-in-Chief at CLASH Books. She is also the host of Get Lit With Leza. As a result of her being a megafan of Lana Del Rey & Sylvia Plath, she curated and edited an anthology of stories called Tragedy Queens: Stories Inspired by Lana Del Rey & Sylvia Plath which is available on CLASH Books. She’s the author of the surreal horror story collection Cartoons in the Suicide Forest & alt lit poetry & social media commentary about modern alienation, Trash Panda. If the sound is a bit off at times in this episode it's because we were both a bit "lit" during the recording of it, which of course set the perfect mood for us to go off on wild tangents about cults, The Bling Ring, drugs, and how we both originally wanted to be filmmakers. The main focus though is Leza's truly excellent and diverse taste in music. We go on about Courtney Love, Lana Del Rey, The Weeknd, Marilyn Manson, and Madonna. When we aren't talking about that, we're railing against the patriarchy, what got us both into literature, and annoying guys on the internet. The best parts are when Leza actually reads a bit of her writing and describes some of the films she made. They aren't at the end of the episode like typical Textual Healing episodes but scattered throughout, so listen to the whole show to catch them! In this lit episode, I am joined by Zac Smith and Giacomo Pope where we talk about nothing and everything. Music genres, literary genres, and even how a genre's name comes into being is discussed in this 2hr long round table. Zac Smith flexes his knowledge of linguistics and genre. Giacomo Pope goes off on small presses along with an insane grasp on what shoegaze-y indie rock actually is and was. Together we discuss how writers act due to social media and how the artform has given way to clout-chasing. Fun things to look forward to in this episode are pet names, Spotify royalties, and how I rejected one of Giac's submissions to Maudlin house 20 minutes before interviewing him on his last appearance of Textual Healing. To get a better vibe of their music tastes check out their Giac's Spotify playlist: We Can All be Sad Bois *and his artist page that includes some of Zac's music: Be Softly.* Zac Smith's most recent book is available at Clash Books and Giacomo Pope's latest book is available at Ghost City Press. I met comedian Keith Lowell Jensen shortly after I moved to Sacramento in 2013. We first got to know each other when I interviewed him for the local newspaper, Sacramento News and Review, but soon became friends. Before the pandemic, we were getting wieners on a regular basis. (It technically started as hot dogs for lunch, but soon wieners became synonymous with hanging out) Of the many things we bonded over, a mutual love for ska was high on the list, especially when Keith learned I was writing a book about ska. He insisted that I include him in the book with a chapter called “My Friend Keith Likes Ska.” That didn’t happen, but here we are a few months before In Defense of Ska releases and “My Friend Keith Likes Ska” is now a reality—as a podcast episode. Keith always hires a clown for his birthday partiesIn this episode, Keith talks about local Sacramento band Filibuster (Who Keith attempted to manage for a minute), his love for Fishbone (He was at that crazy Warfield show at the beginning of Everyday Sunshine: The Story of Fishbone), and a slew of other topics. One highlight this week comes by way of co-host Adam Davis, who revealed that his childhood church had a “No Skaw dancing” policy at their dances. Scandalous! Check out Keith’s latest special Not For Rehire on Amazon Prime and leave a review. Also be sure to pick up his book Punching Nazis and Other Good Ideas. Keith also has a podcast. Make sure you listen to the episode when he brings on In Defense of Ska author Aaron Carnes. Follow Keith on Twitter. His next book, What I Was Arrested For will be available for pre-order soon. Aaron Carnes loves ska. He loves it so much, that he has dedicated the last 7 years of his life putting together his soon to be released book, In Defense of Ska. The book is a love letter to the genre, diving very deep into the music's history and cultural impact. In the book, Aaron takes us from the dancehalls of Jamaica to the working class neighborhoods of London and over to the orange groves of Anaheim as he delivers tales of the various groups of bands that helped to showcase the music since the 1950's. There is an entire chapter dedicated to defending Reel Big Fish, a great story about how a little known band in the East Bay area that was a HUGE inspiration for the lads in Operation Ivy & Rancid, along with the story of how Let's Go Bowling avoided being gunned down in their van after a gig. It's really a great book that anyone that appreciates ska would enjoy. Aaron has written for the likes of Playboy, Salon, Bandcamp Daily, Sierra Club, Sun Magazine and is the music editor at Good Times Santa Cruz weekly newspaper. He spent several years as a the drummer for the hyper ska punk band Flat Planet, and has toured with the likes of Skankin' Pickle and MU330 doing merch and roadie duties. The book comes out in May of 2021 via Clash Books (clashbooks.com) and is available to pre-order now. My guest on this episode of the Ska Boom podcast is Aaron Carnes, the author of the forthcoming ska book "In Defense of Ska" that will be published in May of 2021 by Clash Books. Aaron's book asks the important question: "Why doesn't ska get its due as a rich, diverse genre the way punk, metal, hip-hop and electronic music does?" Or more to the point, why are ska fans so embarrassed of this music they love? In a mix of interviews, essays, personal stories, historical snapshots, obscure anecdotes, and think pieces, "In Defense of Ska" dissects, analyzes and celebrates ska, and challenges ska-haters' prejudices to the core.As first time book authors of ska books, Aaron and I compare notes on the book writing process and I ask him about some of the specific essays and anecdotes he writes about including 1). how the mainstream media loves to out celebrities who have a ska past, 2). Aaron's love of Skankin' Pickle, 3). the story of 80s Portland ska band The Crazy 8's experience performing on the Ed McMahon hosted show Star Search and finally, why he thinks Annette Funicello ("Jamaica Ska") and Millie Small ("My Bpy Lollipop") ruined ska.Aaron has created a Spotify playlist from band's featured in his book. You can stream it here.
