In this episode we head across the border one more time for a consideration of the Border Trilogy as a whole.  How does knowing how the story begins and ends change how we read any of the different parts?  My guests on this filibuster over the border include Dr. Nell Sullivan, a Kentuckian who earned her BA in English from Vanderbilt University and earned her PhD from Rice University.  She is currently Professor of English at University of Houston-Downtown, where she teaches courses in American literature and the literature of the American South.  A former editor of the Cormac McCarthy Journal, she has published extensively on gender and class representation in McCarthy's novels, and has also published essays on Katherine Dunn, William Faulkner, and Nella Larsen, among others.  Her work has appeared in numerous essay collections and in such journals as Genre, Critique, The Southern Quarterly, Mississippi Quarterly, and African American Review.   She's joined by long time contributor Dr. Stephen Frye.  Steve Frye is professor and chair of English at California State University, Bakersfield and President of the Cormac McCarthy Society. He is the author of Understanding Cormac McCarthy (Univ. of South Carolina Press) and editor of The Cambridge Companion to Cormac McCarthy, and Cambridge UP's Cormac McCarthy in Context. He has written numerous journal articles on Cormac McCarthy and other authors of the American Romanticist Tradition.  Additionally, he is the author of the novel Dogwood Crossing and the book, Unguessed Kinships: Naturalism and the Geography of Hope in Cormac McCarthy, University of Alabama Press. Bringing in a breath of non-academic fresh air is Marty Priola. Voracious reader, a sometime critic, and book collector, Marty attended the Christian Brothers University of Memphis, the Publishing Institute at the University of Denver, and earned his J.D. at the University of Memphis.  Marty's website for McCarthy appreciation became the first website and a foundational part of the formation of the Cormac McCarthy Society, and he still maintains the Cormac McCarthy webpages and forums.  He has written two entries on McCarthy for the Dictionary of Literary Biography. His writing is also featured in exchanges with Peter Josyph in Cormac Mccarthy's House: Reading Mccarthy Without Walls and The Wrong Reader's Guide to Cormac Mccarthy: All The Pretty Horses, which he edited and published in its first (ebook) form.   As always, listeners should beware: there be spoilers here. Thanks to Thomas Frye, who composed, performed, and produced the music for READING MCCARTHY.  The views of the host and his guests do not necessarily reflect the views of their home institutions or the Cormac McCarthy Society. Why has teacher autonomy remained such a central aspect of grading? 3. Does including both academic and behavioral factors in grading help or hurt? 4. What problems are caused by inconsistent grading standards? 5. How can academic grading be improved? MEET OUR GUEST Laura J. When an employee leaves their employer, comprehensive knowledge transfer to the remaining colleagues is always a critical desire but, more commonly, a major failure. Most companies do it poorly or not at all. Without a sound strategy to infuse knowledge transfer into employee turnover and/or succession activities, both the company and teammates find themselves in a very vulnerable position trying to continue the operations at an optimal level. This negative impact is tripled when long-tenured employees holding key roles leave the company. High-stress levels, frustration, and anxiety are felt by all when handoffs are not well executed. In this episode, Laurel Rutledge, founder of the LKR Group, shares insights on how leaders can avoid their employees taking institutional knowledge with them as they transfer to a new department or worse, leave the company. What has caused the high gas price? War, economy, COVID? Some think it could be related to refineries, storms we've had, infrastructure, employee base, and demand.  What we also wonder about is the comparison of the price of gas to the oil and gas industries' record profits right now. They are making good money, so how do they justify it? To help better understand why and to speculate on what we can expect next, business and energy industry experts discuss what exactly has impacted the high prices. We also discuss federal programs and how they can work to help people understand the policies on the table on how to stall inflation.  Maybe we will see some relief now that President Biden is calling a for 3-month suspension of gas and diesel taxes. On Saving America 101, I sat down with Dietrich Von Biedenfeld (Mayor Pro Tem of West Columbia Texas, professor at the University of Houston- Downtown, and candidate for Brazoria County Treasurer) to talk about his experience with transportation policy and pro-bono work with veterans. As always, the opinions expressed in this podcast are mine and my guests' and not the opinions of my university, my company, or the businesses with which I am connected. I am an attorney and speaker as well as the founder and CEO of Claremont Management Group, a consulting firm in Houston, Texas. I'm also a tenured professor, the Cameron Endowed Chair of Management and Marketing, and the Director of Graduate Programs at the University of St. Thomas. You can connect with me on LinkedIn [@DavidSchein], Twitter [@DSchein1], Facebook [@AuthorDavidSchein], and YouTube [user/ClaremontManagement]! My upcoming book, Bad Deal for America, explores the high-stakes game U.S. politicians are playing with the taxpayers' money. The major players, themselves like a deck of cards, have shown us in their own words that the political system is broken. Readers can follow the money to see how some have lived high on the hog while masquerading as public servants. Told in an entertaining and unique way, this book is a call to arms to fulfill the ideals of the founding fathers by holding the political class responsible. My 2018 book, The Decline of America: 100 Years of Leadership Failures, is a thought-provoking, non-partisan book that reviews the last 100 years of American Presidents (from Wilson through Obama), offering not just criticism, but common-sense solutions to help fix America before it's too late. I also host the podcast Business Law 101, where I discuss the legal concepts all business owners need to know.
