The most striking outcome of this weekend's German election wasn't the actual winner. It's that one in five voters backed the far-right party, Alternative for Germany. Elon Musk heavily promoted the AfD in the lead up to Election Day, and the party leaned on AI-generated content to amplify its nationalist message. On POLITICO Tech, host Steven Overly chats with reporter Emily Schultheis in Berlin about Musk's influence and what the results mean for transatlantic relations. Learn more about your ad choices. Parliamentary elections in Germany this month are set to usher in a new post-Angela Merkel era. But there's another way the process is affecting politics: early voting. Germans have enjoyed postal voting for decades, but with no end to the pandemic in sight, officials expect as many as 60 percent of voters may choose to cast their ballots by mail this year. The far-right AfD party is using that development to take a page from Donald Trump's playbook with unfounded claims about voting reliability. Former fellow and journalist Emily Schultheis, currently based in Berlin and Vienna, joins ICWA's Glenn Kates to explain what's at stake.

Three decades ago in 1989, people in East Germany took to the streets to protest communist rule. The “Peaceful Revolution” led to the fall of the Berlin Wall on November 9, paving the way for German reunification the following year. But the euphoria soon wore off for many in the former East, and it's having political consequences today: eastern Germany has become the bastion of the far-right Alternative for Germany party. Karen Donfried and Jeff Gedmin join Susan and Greg to discuss the legacy of 1989 and serious challenges facing the country's political establishment today. Then ICWA fellow Emily Schultheis reports from Germany, where she speaks to young eastern Germans born in 1989 about their identity.
