SHOW 11-13-25 CBS EYE ON THE WORLD WITH JOHN BATCHELOR THE SHOW BEGINS IN THE DOUBTS ABOUT BUNDESTAG COHESION AND  STABILITY. FIRST HOUR 9-915 1/2 Anatol Lieven discusses the war in Ukraine, noting the new Russian unit RubiKon hunting drone operators and the slow Russian advance on Pakovsk, aided by both innovation and old factors like fog. The conversation also covers Germany's military rearmament plans and the significant, rising influence of the populist right AFD party in German politics, which is strongly anti-immigrant and largely anti-rearmament. Guest: Anatol Lieven. 1/2 915-930 2/2 Anatol Lieven details UK Prime Minister Starmer's genuine political troubles concerning domestic policy drift and significant potential losses in upcoming regional elections. Starmer maintains prestige supporting Ukraine, though funding remains a question. A back channel to Moscow has been opened by Jonathan Powell to discuss peace, dropping the prior insistence on a ceasefire, indicating a shift in London. Guest: Anatol Lieven. 2/2 930-945 Chris Riegel, CEO of SCALA.com, states that Chinese claims of matching Nvidia's high-end chip success are largely propaganda, though China mandates domestic chip use. The US holds the AI "pole position." AI is a genuine profit driver, worth trillions to GDP, with material workforce impact expected by 2026. Guest: Chris Riegel 945-1000 Mary Anastasia O'grady reports on the assassination of Mayor Carlos Monzo in Michoacán, killed after leaving President Sheinbaum's Morena party and aggressively confronting cartels and their agricultural extortion. Sheinbaum has cooperated smartly with the US, allowing surveillance flights, and hired credible security chief García Haruch. The main challenge is whether Sheinbaum has the political will to confront the cartels, especially given the widespread belief in Morena's complicity. Guest: Mary Anastasia O'Grady. SECOND HOUR 10-1015 Cliff May discusses severe Christian persecution in Nigeria, which President Tinubu claims guarantees religious liberty. Attacks are carried out by Boko Haram, ISWAP, and powerful Fulani militias. May suggests jihadism acts as theological justification for Fulani nomadic herders to seize land from Christian farmers. The US could provide assistance, training, and advice to the Nigerian military to protect communities. Guest: Cliff May. 1015-1030 Sadanand Dhume examines the shift in US foreign policy, where President Trump now favors Pakistan and its military chief, General Munir. This followed intense combat between India and Pakistan after a horrific terrorist attack. When the US mediated a ceasefire, Trump took credit, which embarrassed Indian Prime Minister Modi. Pakistan cleverly thanked Trump and nominated him for a Nobel Peace Prize, securing his favor over India. India now needs a trade deal. Guest: Sadanand Dhume. 1030-1045 Professor Matthew Graham discusses the most powerful black hole flare ever recorded, which shone like 10 trillion suns from an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN). Material falling into the supermassive black hole forms an accretion disc, releasing intense radiation. This 10-billion-year-old event was detected using computer cameras. Graham explains that these black holes are ancient "seeds" of galaxies, acting as cosmic vacuum cleaners, such as when a large star gets shredded. Guest: Professor Matthew Graham. 1/2 1045-1100 Professor Matthew Graham details his needs for future black hole research, prioritizing a network of space telescopes with large fields of view, like the Roman space telescope, for perpetual, multi-wavelength monitoring of the sky. This "audit of the cosmos" will improve detection speed and timing. Graham encourages students to pursue black hole work, noting it is a vibrant growth area, viewing black holes as the enduring future product of the universe. Guest: Professor Matthew Graham.2/2 THIRD HOUR 1100-1115 Veronique de Rugy discusses the cost of living, critiquing the administration's claims that Thanksgiving dinner is cheaper, citing the use of shrinkflation and item removal. She criticizes the proposal to send $2,000 checks, noting this Keynesian approach boosts demand, which, without increased supply, risks raising prices further. De Rugy advocates for deregulation and the elimination of tariffs (which she confirms are a tax) as the necessary supply-side solution to the affordability crisis. Guest: Veronique de Rugy. 1115-1130 Conrad Black assesses Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's new budget as anti-climactic, failing to deliver promised growth or definitive decisions on controversial policies like pipelines. However, the budget was sensible and conciliatory, avoiding conflict with the opposition, Washington, and Alberta. Carney, adopting a diplomatic style akin to a central banker, did offer serious encouragements to alleviate the housing shortage. Guest: Conrad Black. 1130-1145 Scott Winship analyzes 50 years of US median earnings, preferring the MACPI to accurately adjust for cost of living. He finds that the middle class is better off: women's earnings are up 120%, and men's are up 40–50%. Winship disputes populist theories that income inequality or the China shock are the main villains, noting that the worst period for young men was 1973–1989, predating those factors. Guest: Scott Winship.1/2 1145-1200 Scott Winship investigates the mystery of the decline in young men's earnings between 1973 and 1989. He concludes this period was not caused by accelerated immigration or women entering the workforce, as men's earnings continued to rise. The actual explanation is the unique economic combination of stagflation—high unemployment and very high inflation—that occurred until the early 1980s recession. This severe economic dynamic has not been matched since 1989. Guest: Scott Winship. FOURTH HOUR 12-1215 The arrival of the US carrier Gerald Ford signals an escalating commitment to possible military solutions against Maduro's regime in Venezuela. Maduro has ordered a Cuban-style guerrilla defense, but analysts worry more about "anarchization"—wreaking havoc—if he falls. Removing Maduro and lifting sanctions could lead to necessary refinancing of Venezuela's $170 billion debt. Guest: Evan Ellis. 1/4 1215-1230 Peru faces severe political instability, evidenced by six presidents in two years and detentions for corruption. Transitional leader José Heresi is tackling rising organized crime, including a 36% jump in homicides, through a state of emergency. Meanwhile, China maintains deep-seated influence, controlling key sectors like mining, oil, and the deep-water port of Chancay. Guest: Evan Ellis.2/4 1230-1245 Honduras is holding a high-stakes, single-round election where the outcome could determine if the country returns to alignment with Taiwan or shifts to China. Election observers noted improper pressure and concerns about meddling by the ruling Libre Party. Separately, Argentina's economy under Milei is strengthening, backed by a significant US currency swap and political support. Guest: Evan Ellis. 3/4 1245-100 AM COP 30 is largely "political theater" with commitments insufficient to address climate change. Estimates suggest the crucial 1.5-degree global temperature increase will be reached by 2030. While there is increased international attention, funding remains inadequate; Brazil secured only $5.5 billion toward its $125 billion forest preservation goal. The plight of Amazonian indigenous peoples continues unaddressed. Guest: Evan Ellis.4/4 |

PREVIEW The rise of the anti-EU, pro-Russia AFD poses a political dilemma in Germany. While the AFD won't win an absolute majority, its potential gain in Bundestag seats could force the remaining parties into an almost impossible "centrist coalition." Such a coalition might require combining groups like the Christian Democrats with the highly detested Greens and the Socialist Party, whose economic policies are antithetical. The German establishment fears this resulting paralysis, comparing it to the situation in Holland. Guest: Anatol Lieven. 1945 BERLIN

The primary focus of today's discourse pertains to the impending atmospheric conditions that are anticipated to impact various regions across the western United States, particularly California. A rapidly advancing atmospheric river is expected to instigate flood watch conditions spanning from the Yosemite Valley and Sierra foothills into the Southern Cascades, while a robust onshore flow will generate wind advisories within the Sacramento Valley and inclement winter weather in the High Sierra. Furthermore, the Weather Prediction Center has indicated a significant likelihood of flash flooding across central Northern California, particularly in urban areas. In addition, the episode delineates the potential hazards of rock falls and debris flows in proximity to recently burned areas, emphasizing the manifold risks associated with these weather patterns. As we navigate through these forecasts, we remain committed to providing timely and pertinent information to ensure the safety and preparedness of our listeners.Takeaways:* The atmospheric river is bringing significant flood watch conditions across various regions in California. * Flash flooding is highly probable in central Northern California, particularly in urban areas today. * Winter storm warnings are in effect for Mono County, predicting hazardous travel conditions. * High surf advisories are in place for Hawaii's east-facing shores, with surf reaching heights of 14 feet. * Nevada is experiencing expanded winter headlines, indicating severe weather near the Sierra front. * Coastal regions of Oregon and Washington are under small craft advisories due to rough sea conditions. SHOW 11-11-25 CBS EYE ON THE WORLD WITH JOHN BATCHELOR 1933 VON PAPPEN IN BERLIN THE SHOW BEGINS IN THE DOUBTS ABOUT THE BBO CONTNUING INTACT. FIRST HOUR 9-915 Economic Slowdown Fears Amid AI Impact and the BBC Scandal. Liz Peek characterizes the US economy as slowing down, with hiring affected by government layoffs and the displacement of tech jobs due to AI adoption. While the consumer remains robust, significant anxiety exists regarding the massive investments in AI and resulting stock market valuations. Peek comments on the BBC scandal, viewing the resignations as acknowledgment that the state-run outlet deliberately spliced footage to portray the US President as exhorting violence, revealing a deep, unfavorable political bias against conservatives. 915-930 Economic Slowdown Fears Amid AI Impact and the BBC Scandal. 930-945 Middle East War Dynamics: Hamas Decimation, Peace Plans, and Hezbollah Rearmament. Jonathan Schanzer addresses the BBC's acknowledgment of breaching editorial guidelines over 1,500 times during the Gaza conflict. He confirms that Hamas has been decimated, operating as a spent, asymmetric urban force. Schanzer details the Trump administration's "Board of Peace" proposal for Gaza, stressing the need for a technocratic authority that excludes both Hamas and the Palestinian Authority. He also highlights troubling reports that Hezbollah is rearming with increasing speed, assisted by Iran and, surprisingly, Turkey. 945-1000 Middle East War Dynamics: Hamas Decimation, Peace Plans, and Hezbollah Rearmament. SECOND HOUR 10-1015 Staffing Challenges and Political Bias: The Gaza Peace Plan and the BBC. Mary Kissel details the challenges facing the State Department and NSC in implementing the Trump administration's urgent Gaza Peace Plan, noting staffing issues are delaying coordination. The plan, featuring an apolitical "Board of Peace," seeks international legitimacy despite the UN's prejudice against Israel. Kissel expresses little surprise regarding the BBC scandal, viewing the deliberate distortion of the President's video remarks as appalling and emblematic of an "embedded bias" against conservatives that is deep and unfixable. 1015-1030 Staffing Challenges and Political Bias: The Gaza Peace Plan and the BBC. Judy Dempsey discusses the rise of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party, noting it is infiltrating German culture, education, and town halls, predominantly in the East. She warns that the AfD poses a danger to German democracy and the rule of law. The future hinges on whether established parties can isolate the AfD or if the Constitutional Court will intervene to outlaw the party. THIRD HOUR 1100-1115 Rare Earths, Global Conflicts, and Reimagining Democracy. Gregory Copley analyzes China's rare earth monopoly, noting it was achieved through low pricing and unsafe practices but is now eroding as global suppliers ramp up production. He reviews current global conflicts, viewing the deployment of the USS Gerald R. Ford battle group near Venezuela as a test of brinkmanship, and citing Kyiv's admission of losses in Ukraine. Copley also argues that democracy is "dead," advocating for a return to defining the spirit of a social contract rather than relying on mutable laws. 1115-1130 Rare Earths, Global Conflicts, and Reimagining Democracy. FOURTH HOUR 12-1215 Conservative Politics and Extremism; The Structural Problems of the BBC. Joseph Sternberg argues that mainstream conservatives must accommodate legitimate right-wing concerns (like immigration) to squeeze out extremists, referencing the German CDU/CSU's successful historical tactic against neo-Nazis. Ivana Stradner warns that the UN cybercrime treaty, drafted by Russia and supported by China, undermines global human rights and free speech. She argues the treaty is mere "window dressing" enabling authoritarian regimes to pursue digital sovereignty—like Russia's "fake news" laws or China's "golden shield" project—to censor dissent. Stradner suggests that allowing Russia and China to regulate cyberspace is comparable to trusting the arsonist to put out the fire, urging the United States not to ratify the treaty. 1245-100 AM The Modern Marine Corps: MEUs, Amphibious Ship Shortages, and the Role in East Asia. Colonel Grant Newsham discusses the Marine Corps, celebrating its 250th birthday and historic legacy at Belleau Wood. Newsham describes the Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) as a flexible force of about 2,000 Marines aboard amphibious ships, capable of missions from humanitarian aid to combat. A critical challenge is the Navy's low prioritization of amphibious ships, leading to a deployment shortage. In East Asia, Marines are expected to seize key terrain and use long-range precision weapons to control maritime territory, though prioritizing missile units has reduced overall mission versatility.

The predominant focus of today's broadcast revolves around the critical fire weather conditions affecting several regions, particularly the Florida Panhandle and parts of Louisiana and Mississippi. We delineate the issuance of red flag warnings, which signify elevated fire risks due to gusty winds and arid humidity levels, thereby underscoring the potential for rapid fire spread should any ignition occur. Additionally, we address the impending freeze conditions anticipated across central and northern Texas, coupled with the dense fog advisories along the southern California coastline, which are significantly impairing visibility. Furthermore, we report on ongoing firefighting efforts in Virginia and West Virginia, where substantial progress has been made in containing wildfires. It is imperative that we remain vigilant and heed the warnings issued by meteorological authorities to ensure safety amidst these hazardous conditions.Takeaways:* The United States Marine Corps celebrates its 250th birthday today, marking a significant historical milestone. * Critical fire weather conditions are present, particularly in parts of the Florida Panhandle and southeast Mississippi. * Gusty northwest winds combined with low humidity create an environment conducive to rapid fire spread. * Dense fog advisories are in effect along the southern California coast, severely limiting visibility. * A widespread freeze is anticipated tonight, impacting central and northern regions significantly. * Fire crews are actively engaged in mopping up two fires in Virginia, with varying degrees of containment reported. “In this moment of political darkness, New York will be the light”, so hat es Zohran Mamdani am Dienstag gesagt, nachdem er zum nächsten New Yorker Bürgermeister gewählt wurde. The salient point of our discussion today revolves around the significant weather events currently impacting various regions across the United States. We commence with the early season influences from the Pacific, which have resulted in heavy rainfall and mountain snow in the Northwest and Northern California, alongside coastal hazards affecting Oregon and the Bay Area. Furthermore, the Northeast is experiencing the aftermath of a strong cold front, characterized by brisk winds that have led to scattered outages and downed limbs in Connecticut. Additionally, Alaska's marine zones are grappling with severe freezing conditions and gale warnings, while Hawaii is under a high surf advisory, posing risks to coastal activities. We conclude with an overview of the broader weather landscape, noting the absence of active cyclones in the tropics, thus providing a comprehensive summary of the current meteorological challenges.Takeaways:* The Pacific Northwest is experiencing early season impacts, including heavy rain and mountain snow.* Connecticut has reported scattered outages and downed limbs following overnight wind bursts.* A high surf advisory is in effect for Hawaii, affecting north and east facing shores.* Coastal hazards and minor flooding are anticipated around the Bay Area during high tide periods.* Strong winds and hazardous marine conditions are expected in Long Island Sound this morning.* Minor flooding is possible in Oregon due to ongoing coastal flood warnings and high surf advisories.Sources[NWS Seattle | https://www.weather.gov/sew/][NWS Portland | https://www.weather.gov/pqr/][NWS San Francisco/Monterey | https://www.weather.gov/mtr/][NWS Boston Weather Story | https://www.weather.gov/box/weatherstory][CTInsider | https://www.ctinsider.com/weather/article/ct-road-closures-thursday-storm-damage-21142460.php][NWS Anchorage | https://www.weather.gov/afc][NWS Honolulu Watches/Warnings | https://www.weather.gov/hfo/watchwarn][NHC | https://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/MIATWOAT.shtml][USGS Latest Earthquakes (Past Day) | https://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/map/][NWS Anchorage | https://www.weather.gov/afc][NWS “Heavy Freezing Spray Warning” summary | https://forecast.weather.gov/wwamap/wwatxtget.php?cwa=usa&wwa=Heavy+Freezing+Spray+Warning][NWS San Francisco/Monterey | https://www.weather.gov/mtr/][NWS Sacramento | https://www.weather.gov/sto/][CTInsider | https://www.ctinsider.com/weather/article/ct-road-closures-thursday-storm-damage-21142460.php][NWS Boston Weather Story | https://www.weather.gov/box/weatherstory][NWS Honolulu Watches/Warnings | https://www.weather.gov/hfo/watchwarn][NWS Honolulu Surf Forecast | https://www.weather.gov/hfo/SRF][NWS Boston Weather Story | https://www.weather.gov/box/weatherstory][Boston 25 News advisory roundup | https://www.boston25news.com/news/local/weather-alert-high-wind-warnings-watches-posted-mass-gusts-up-60-mph/3K2HHB44KBA7HDIREZHE47LVNY/][NWS Great Falls | https://www.weather.gov/tfx/][NWS New York, NY | https://www.weather.gov/okx/][PIX11 via Yahoo — wind impacts roundup | https://www.yahoo.com/news/articles/strong-damaging-winds-cause-chaos-111326054.html][NWS Portland | https://www.weather.gov/pqr/][NWS Medford (hazards & high surf) | https://www.weather.gov/mfr/][NWS Seattle | https://www.weather.gov/sew/][NWS Seattle AFD | https://forecast.weather.gov/product.php?issuedby=SEW&product=AFD&site=SEW] This is a public episode.
