Miguel is joined by Alexander Aviña — associate professor of Latin American and Mexican history at Arizona State University and author of Specters of Revolution: Peasant Guerrillas in the Cold War Mexican Countryside — for a deep conversation where fútbol and imperialism collide. First, Alexander breaks down Mexico's World Cup-hosting history, linking the 1970 tournament to the 1968 Tlatelolco massacre and 1986 to the 1985 Mexico City earthquake and public jeering of PRI presidents, while noting protests during 1986 and Sócrates' solidarity gestures as Maradona worked his magic on the pitch. They compare those political tensions to the upcoming 2026 tournament. Alexander and Miguel also break down the younger, Liga MX and Euro club-heavy Selección Nacional Mexicana roster, what home-field advantage at Azteca could mean, and why FIFA's hyper capitalist grip on this tournament — from displaced vendors and street workers in Mexico City to $30,000 World Cup final tickets in the US — has both Miguel and Alexander feeling less excited about this World Cup than any before.Miguel and Alexander also dig into the CNN and New York Times reporting on CIA-linked assassination operations targeting cartel figures on Northern Mexican soil, asking whether the line between intelligence sharing and outright foreign intervention has already been crossed. They also break down Mexico's Ministry of Public Education, reversing its plan to end the school year early for the World Cup, the US State Department's announced review of all 53 Mexican consulates and the far-right conspiracy theory behind it, and the broader Trump administration push to install a right-wing political order across Latin America — from Venezuela to Cuba to Mexico.Lastly, Miguel and Alexander discuss the contradictions of being a politically conscious Fútbol fan: rooting hard for El Tri while critiquing the mega-event capitalist FIFA machine hosted in the imperial core. This episode features first-hand narration and submissions from our community. The most terrifying stories aren't the ones passed down through centuries—they're the ones happening right now to people just like you. In this special episode, we hand the microphone over to four members of the Spooky Appalachia family to share their personal, unexplainable encounters with the creatures that call these hills home. From the fog-heavy roads of West Virginia to the military-monitored hollers of the Mid-Ohio Valley, these fans recount the moments their reality shattered:The Route 7 Stalker: A driver in Wetzel County, WV, realizes the "skinny bear" he saw a decade ago was actually a bipedal, canine-like hunter that has claimed the highway as its own.The Winged Gentleman of Ruffin: Near the infamous Satan's Bridge (Danville, VA line), two friends witness a silent, human-shaped figure in a duster and wide-brimmed hat glide effortlessly over their car.The Carroll County Invisible: A Maryland commuter describes the gut-wrenching feeling of being hunted by a transparent, humanoid entity swinging through the treeline. The Mid-Ohio Valley Siege: A family's encounter with a spindly "Pale Walker" leads to a chilling military presence, Blackhawk helicopters, and a terrifying realization that the creatures can mimic the sounds of their own hounds. These are the voices of those who have seen the "veil" grow thin. Listen as they describe the sights, the smells, and the lingering dread of Appalachian cryptids.Want to share your own story on the show? Archaeology is a dangerous business, as we discover the hard way in this latest episode where we are taken deep into the catacombs underneath Rome. Donald Pleasence's Professor Lasky leads a well-funded but under-staffed dig to find a two thousand-year-old tomb which may or may not be evil. It is evil, and something nebulous is unleashed with the power to do whatever the special effects budget will allow. How can it be stopped? This season is dedicated to that great quiet man of British cinema, Donald Pleasence, who spent a great deal of time in the 1980s in Italy. We would love to hear from you about your favourite Donald Pleasence films from this period, or if you have ever been attacked by a demon wind whilst down a tunnel. Episode 95 In 1980, a seemingly unremarkable fire threatened to expose something far more dangerous than arson. What investigators uncovered was a trail that pointed toward an arms pipeline linked directly to the Irish Republican Army, operating quietly while The Troubles raged overseas. At the center of it all was Charles Galant—a small-time thief who never set out to be part of something so vast, but who became the sole link between a suspicious fire and an armory heist that tied someone in his network to the IRA. In this episode of Crime to Burn, we explore: The fire that first drew police attention How investigators connected a local blaze to an international arms network The role of theft, secrecy, and compartmentalization in terrorist operations How Galant's actions exposed vulnerabilities inside a tightly controlled system And how one overlooked incident nearly unraveled an entire pipeline This is a story about unintended consequences, criminal blind spots, and how fire once again became the catalyst that revealed what was never meant to be seen. We're removing the paywall for the next week so you can give it a listen. You'll also get an invite to our second reading group meet-up: a discussion of Richard Barbrook and Andy Cameron's seminal 1995 year essay, “The Californian Ideology,” and Fred Turner's recent article for The Baffler, “The Texan Ideology.” That's going down on Sunday, January 11.In 2005, the music and culture critics Simon Reynolds and Mark Fisher (RIP) began using the term hauntology — a riff on “ontology” — to describe an emergent genre in UK music, built from archival recordings from post-war England, vinyl crackle, and haunted, elegiac atmospherics. (Think: Burial, The Caretaker, and the eerie catalog of the label Ghost Box.) They borrowed the term from Jacques Derrida, who used it to describe a present haunted by futures that had never arrived; Reynolds and Fisher heard that idea vibrating through a generation of musicians excavating Britain's cultural memory.Fisher explored hauntology's political dimension, rooting the movement in a longing for Britain's pre-Thatcherite social democratic past and an affection for cultural touchstones like the BBC Radiophonic Workshop, Brutalist architecture, and films like The Wickerman. Reynolds, meanwhile, mapped its musical lineage—back to '90s hauntology predecessors like Boards of Canada and Broadcast, and across the pond to J Dilla-era hip-hop and underground movements like freak folk, hypnagogic pop, and chillwave.A recent CUJO reading group on the topic inspired us to invite Simon—the author of books like Rip It Up and Start Again, Retromania, and Futuromania (listen to our ep about it!)—to help us mark the 20th anniversary of hauntology and explore what it has to teach us about mobilizing the culture of the past in a way that feels meaningful and even forward-lookingSimon joins us to dig into the cultural factors that gave rise to hauntology, the 21st-century fetish for obsolete media, and the differences between hauntology and simple nostalgia or “retro.” We also talk about the pasts that continue to haunt us—from rave culture to Marxism—and he gives us a sneak peek at his forthcoming book, Still in a Dream: Shoegaze, Slackers and the Reinvention of Rock, 1984–1994, arriving in 2026.Listen to our HAUNTOLOGY PLAYLIST on Apple Music and YouTubeRead more of Simon on hauntology in Retromania: Pop Culture's Addiction to Its Own Past and over at ReynoldsRetroKeep up with Simon and his writing on blissblogFollow Simon on XAdditional reading:Jacques Derrida, Specters of Marx, The State of the Debt, the Work of Mourning and the New International, 1993.Mark Fisher, “October 6, 1979: Capitalism and Bipolar Disorder,” 2005.Simon Reynolds, “Haunted Audio, a/k/a Society of the Spectral: Ghost Box, Mordant Music, and Hauntology,” director's cut of an article in the November 2006 issue of The Wire.Mark Fisher, Ghosts of My Life: Writings on Depression, Hauntology, and Lost Futures, chapter 2, 2014. ORIGINALLY RELEASED Jun 21, 2020 In this episode, we explore the Haitian Revolution—the only successful slave revolt in history and a landmark event in the global struggle against colonialism and white supremacy. From the brutal plantation economy of Saint-Domingue to the rise of revolutionary leaders like Toussaint Louverture and Jean-Jacques Dessalines, we trace how enslaved Africans overthrew French rule and declared the world's first Black republic. We also examine how this radical uprising shook the foundations of empire, inspired abolitionist movements, and remains a crucial—yet often erased—chapter in revolutionary history. Alexander Aviña is an associate professor of Latin American history in the School of Historical, Philosophical and Religious Studies at Arizona State University. His book, "Specters of Revolution: Peasant Guerrillas in the Cold War Mexican Countryside" , was awarded the Maria Elena Martínez Book Prize in Mexican History for 2015 by the Conference on Latin American History. ---------------------------------------------------- Support Rev Left and get access to bonus episodes: www.patreon.com/revleftradio Make a one-time donation to Rev Left at BuyMeACoffee.com/revleftradio Follow, Subscribe, & Learn more about Rev Left Radio HERE Outro Beat Prod. by flip da hood

In this episode, Geoff and Katrina dive back into The Tale of Tales by Giambattista Basile. Is it violent? And misogynistic? And unnecessarily sexual? Yes. But it's also racist. Katrina was sent a copy of Specters of the Marvelous: Race and the Development of the European Fairy Tale by Kimberly J. Lau, a professor of literature at the University of California, Santa Cruz. This book was chocked full of fascinating research about how the tales that most famously make up the genre of fairy tales, have unique place and time specific types of racism. Katrina retells the tale of The Golden Trunk, which reveals what we can learn about how Italians in the late 1500's viewed Black people, particularly those that were enslaved. Not only that, but the audience also gets to hear a classic Basile variant of the Cupid and Psyche story, which is a precursor to Beauty and the Beast.  Content Warning: Violence, Racism, Sexual Assault Not My Fantasy- Live Action Snow White

In this episode of Guerrilla History,  we have an informal discussion with our friend and comrade Alex Aviña about the dangers of dogmatism when reading history, and much more! We love these slightly more theoretical conversations, and we know many of you do too. This one fits very well with many of the Sources and Methods episodes we have released, so be sure to check those previous episodes out if you are new to the show! Alexander Aviña is associate professor of Latin American history at Arizona State University and author of Specters of Revolution: Peasant Guerrillas in the Cold War Mexican Countryside. Alex's website is available at alexanderavina.com, and he can be followed on twitter @Alexander_Avina Help support the show by signing up to our patreon, where you also will get bonus content: https://www.patreon.com/guerrillahistory
