Welcome to The DMF — Discovering Meaning in Film and Acting. I'm Justin Younts, and this is part two with casting director Tiffany Little Canfield of Telsey Company. This one gets into the specific casting stories behind some of the biggest films Tiffany has worked on — and she doesn't hold back. We talk about how Cynthia Erivo was cast as Elphaba, how Ariana Grande landed the role of Glinda, Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible, Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard, and Bowen Yang. We also get into the casting of A Most Violent Year, Miss Sloane, and Margin Call.Tiffany also shares her thoughts on AI and storytelling — why she doesn't believe technology will ever replicate what a human can convey in a moment, especially in the room. We talk about the art of auditioning, staying in character, and what it looks like to work inside the Telsey office on projects of this scale. In this episode we discuss:The casting of Wicked and the stories behind each roleHow Ariana Grande was cast as GlindaCasting Cynthia Erivo, Michelle Yeoh & Jeff GoldblumCasting A Most Violent Year, Miss Sloane & Margin CallAI and the future of human storytellingThe art of auditioning and staying presentWhat it's like working at Telsey on major productions00:00:00 - Introduction & AI in Storytelling 00:00:37 - The Art of Auditioning 00:01:33 - Staying in Character 00:02:21 - Working with Telsey Office 00:03:37 - Casting 'A Most Violent Year' 00:10:11 - Casting 'Miss Sloan' 00:12:54 - Casting 'Margin Call' 00:15:14 - Casting 'Wicked' 00:15:38 - Casting Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba 00:15:47 - Casting Michelle Yeoh as Madame Morrible 00:19:03 - Casting Ariana Grande as Glinda 00:26:44 - Casting Jeff Goldblum as The Wizard 00:29:11 - Casting Bowen Yang#DMF #TiffanyLittleCanfield #CastingDirector #Wicked #ArianaGrande #MichelleYeoh #CynthiaErivo #JeffGoldblum #TelseyCompany #Acting #Casting #Podcast

In this Missing Frames episode, Shawn and Sarah conclude their journey to Oz with Wicked: For Good. They were huge fans of Part One, but this time around? They're not quite Defying Gravity. While the performances are still strong, what should have been a powerful payoff feels more like a drawn-out third act, one that struggles to justify the filmmakers' decision to split the story into two films. During their discussion, Shawn and Sarah break down:The challenges of adapting a stage musical into two standalone filmsWhy the emotional core of the story doesn't quite landHow separating Elphaba and Glinda for most of the runtime undermines the film's emotional coreIn the end, Wicked: For Good serves as a reminder that not every story benefits from being split into two.HOSTSShawn EastridgeSarah Eastridge

In this episode of Missing Frames, Shawn and Sarah FINALLY dive into one of the biggest cultural phenomena in recent memory: Wicked (Part One). Coming in with surprisingly little knowledge of the musical, they explore whether the hype is justified. They unpack the emotional core of Elphaba and Glinda's relationship, highlight unforgettable song and dance numbers (Jonathan Bailey FTW), and debate whether the decision to split the story into two films ultimately helps or hurts the experience. They also look ahead to Wicked: For Good, trying to make sense of the surprisingly mixed reactions from longtime fans and wondering what could possibly cause such a dramatic shift in reception.HOSTSShawn EastridgeSarah Eastridge

What if the reason your marketing isn't converting has nothing to do with your content... and everything to do with the part that comes after it?In this episode, Annemie and Dayna get a little theatrical to break down one of the most important (and most avoided) distinctions in your business: the difference between marketing and selling, and why you genuinely can't have one without the other.Using Wicked as their framework, they make the case that Glinda (your marketing) gets all the love, while Elphaba (your selling) gets an unfair bad rap. From pacing problems to that unmistakable “this didn't need to be this long” feeling, we've got a lot to talk about. Is this a satisfying conclusion to the story of Elphaba and Glinda?Or is this another case of Hollywood stretching something great past its breaking point?Let's talk about it.⸻

Is Glinda's side of Wicked memory-based? And why is she so darn optimistic? This episode, Shoshana is joined by actor and singer Jennafer Newberry, best known for serving as the Glinda standby in the Broadway production of Wicked after previously playing Glinda on the national tour. In addition to her performing career, Newberry is also a musical theatre faculty member at the New York Film Academy. The main conversation dives into Glinda's character arc in Wicked, exploring the idea that the story may be Glinda's memory-based retelling of Elphaba's life. Shoshana and Newberry unpack Glinda's privileged optimism at Shiz University, the comic brilliance of “Popular,” and how songs like “Dancing Through Life,” “One Short Day,” and “Thank Goodness” reveal her gradual transformation. They also discuss the emotional weight of “For Good” and the leadership role Glinda ultimately steps into by the end of the story. In the “Why Is This So Good?” segment, they analyze “Agony” from Into the Woods, exploring how Stephen Sondheim uses humor, structure, and character to elevate the song into one of musical theater's great comedic duets. "Wicked: For Good" is a musical fantasy sequel directed by Jon M. Chu that adapts the second act of the "Wicked" stage musical, itself inspired by Gregory Maguire's reimagining of "The Wizard of Oz." Starring returning cast members Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Jonathan Bailey, and others, the film follows Elphaba and Glinda as they embrace their identities as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good. Developed over a decade and split into two films to preserve the story's depth, production faced delays due to the pandemic and the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Released by Universal Pictures in November 2025, the film grossed $523 million worldwide, earned awards recognition from the Critics' Choice Awards and the Golden Globes, and was named one of the top ten films of the year by both the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute. Ever since its release, the Next Best Picture team has been conducting a series of interviews with many people involved in the making of the film, which we're proud to share with you below. This week on Sibling Rivalry, Bob and Monét clear up their NYC timelines, Monét explains her true relationship with Jasmine Rice, and Bob shares his thoughts on opera. They wonder if they're actually drag savants, debate the hottest superhero, and once again discuss Wicked and their thoughts on “For Good.” Monét names an actor she feels was a miscarriage of casting, they question whether Galinda is the real villain, and decide if Part Two lived up to expectations. Bob breaks down his feelings about Elphaba's “sexy sweater,” and they share their reactions to the new songs. Thanks to our sponsors: Rula patients typically pay $15 per session when using insurance. Transformations are often quite painful. Whether we're growing emotionally or undergoing a physical metamorphosis, real change usually demands discomfort, and sometimes even danger. In Jon M. Chu's Wicked films, the characters literally burst through their own limits: they sprout wings, become tin or straw, or learn to fly by defying gravity.Like all the past Wizard of Oz books and films, Wicked is a mirror of its time. Since the Covid pandemic, conservative movements around the globe have seized on a new scapegoat: openly trans and gender-diverse people. Despite being a tiny fraction of the population, trans folks have been painted as a massive cultural threat, a convenient distraction and a powerful tool for those hungry to seize political power. So what can Wicked teach us about facism? What can Elphaba's journey reveal about the machinery of oppression and about the yellow brick roads queer and trans people are still carving toward liberation?Today we're joined by trans-tech visionary Violet Kitajewski to explore Wicked as an allegory for LGBTQ resilience, transformation, and resistance. After all, that gravity isn't going to defy itself.Plus-- Cynthia Erivo and Arianna Grande announce they are in a “non-demi-curious, semi-binary relationship.”FEATURED MUSIC:Here Comes the Hurricane Legendary Katrina - Kevin JZ Prodigy★ https://youtu.be/GMKaa_q1eCg?si=d0F5b7bV9eSpG6_mFOLLOW US ON INSTAGRAM:★ instagram.com/transosaur★ instagram.com/faustofernos ★ instagram.com/marcfelionHelp Fausto & Marc Fight Blindness and Heart Disease★ https://gofund.me/00771d8fe

The Cinematography Podcast Episode 336: Alice Brooks, ASC For cinematographer Alice Brooks, ASC, shooting both Wicked and Wicked: For Good concurrently was a huge feat. The giant sets, precise camerawork and complex, live lighting cues for the musical numbers required detailed planning and prep. But first, Alice and her long-time collaborator, director Jon M. Chu, broke down the scripts and discussed the emotional intentions for each scene. “When we first start talking about a movie, we talk about emotion,” says Alice. “I love getting an emotional cue for the camera the same way an actor would. What is the emotional intention in the scene? An actor gets to tell the story through their breath and through their looks and through their being. And I get to tell the story, the emotional story, through camera and lenses and lighting.” Separation, seclusion and surrender were the emotional themes in Wicked: For Good. “It became very clear that the first movie would live in this ever-present daylight,” explains Alice. “And the second movie would have this weight and complexity and maturity and density to it and live in the shadows.” 90% of Wicked takes place in the daytime, with the sun setting as Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) embraces her power, sings “Defying Gravity” and flies away. In contrast, Wicked: For Good takes place mostly at night, in the shadows, forest, and underbelly of Oz while Elphaba is in hiding. Alice chose to frame the characters Glinda and Elphaba in contrasting ways for the story. Now separated from Elphaba, Glinda (Ariana Grande) is central to the world of Oz. Alice kept her center punched, carefully composed and choreographed. Elphaba is framed always to the right or left, with tight close-ups and static hand-held shots, to emphasize her loneliness. When the two are together, Alice repeated the same motifs from the first movie, with Ephaba framed to the right and Glinda to the left, often holding hands. Though Wicked: For Good is a huge fantasy movie, Alice and the production crew tried to do as much practically and in camera as possible. The “Girl in the Bubble” dance sequence was done entirely with carefully choreographed mirrors and flyaway walls that were removed as Glinda dances. Alice planned it out using her daughter's bath toys and her husband's shaving mirror. The art department storyboarded it, then the special effects team was able to figure out all the mirror technology needed to pull it off. The camerawork had to be very precise, with many of the frames exactly matching the last, combining both a Technocrane and a Steadicam. Unreal Engine was an indispensable tool for Alice to aid the film's sophisticated lighting and shot design. She used the software to pre-visualize outdoor sets, making sure the sun was at the right angle for perfectly backlighting Glinda in her bubble over Munchkin Land. It also helped her discover where the sun would hit tall buildings and spires of the Emerald City. Unreal assisted with pre-lighting, finding where practical light sources could be integrated and built into interior sets. She even tested different camera lenses to see how they would look in the space under certain lighting conditions and at various angles and heights. Alice is the cinematographer for the upcoming animated Spiderman: Beyond The Spider-verse as well as an animated version of the Dr. Seuss book, Oh The Places You'll Go with director Jon M. Chu. It's time to embrace our witchy obsession as we review Wicked: For Good, the long-awaited second chapter of Elphaba and Glinda's story! Sarah is joined by Julie Gildersleeve, Courtney Turckel, and Kelly Turckel; we head to Oz together for a spoiler-filled discussion of how this film expands on the stage musical while weaving more tightly into the events of The Wizard of Oz. With Elphaba in exile and Glinda rising as the "Good" face of the Wizard's regime, the story explores friendship, perception, sacrifice, and what it truly means to be seen as "wicked" or "good." We break down the emotional weight of the film — from Glinda's heartbreaking loneliness beneath her bubbly public persona, to Elphaba's fierce determination to protect the animals and expose the truth. We also dive into standout musical moments, including the heart-breaking "For Good," the haunting "No Good Deed," the introspective "The Girl in the Bubble," and the love song "As Long As You're Mine." The vocals, cinematography, and performances (especially Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo) are nothing short of stunning. We also explore the tragic origins of the Cowardly Lion, Tin Man, and Scarecrow, calling out the storytelling hidden in the costume design and emotional consequences of each character's transformation. But more than anything, this group of girlfriends dives into the heart of the story — Elphaba and Glinda — and how their friendship, and ours, has been changed for good. For this week's main podcast review, Katie Johnson, Josh Parham, Lauren LaMagna & Cody Dericks join me to discuss the sequel to last year's "Wicked," titled "Wicked: For Good," starring Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Jonathan Bailey, Ethan Slater, Bowen Yang, Michelle Yeoh, and Jeff Goldblum. The film adapts the second act of the 2003 stage musical by Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman, which was loosely based on Gregory Maguire's 1995 novel, a reimagining of L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz" and its 1939 film adaptation. Darker and more complex to bring to the big screen, Set in the Land of Oz before and during the events of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," the film explores the relationship between Elphaba and Glinda as they embrace their new identities as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good, with more tie-ins to "The Wizard of Oz." Following the success of last year's film, what did we think of this emotional conclusion? Please tune in as we discuss the adaptation choices, Jon M.
