In this episode of Cinema Verbi, Father Matt and Father Brian reflect on the movies they watched in 2025 before diving into a discussion about Wicked (2024) and its sequel, Wicked: For Good (2025). They explore the evolution of the story from Gregory Maguire's original novel to the Broadway musical, and finally to the big-screen adaptations. Our hosts discuss themes of friendship and debate the value of reinterpreting old stories, examining how these films reshape (or don't reshape) our understanding of the iconic Wizard of Oz (1939) film.(0:26) Father Matt and Father Brian open the show by welcoming listeners to 2026 and reflecting on their experience hosting a live episode on It's a Wonderful Life (1946) last month. They highlight the communal nature of cinema and the importance of gathering and sharing films together.(2:24) The priests discuss their Letterboxd stats, including the number of films watched, total hours logged, favorite actors, and prominent themes from 2025. Father Matt highlights Paul Walter Hauser as his most-watched actor of 2025, and they share their first, last, and favorite movies of the year.(12:41) The conversation shifts to the episode's main topic: Wicked (2024) and its sequel, Wicked: For Good (2025). Father Brian explains the significance of these movies as adaptations of the Broadway musical and Gregory Maguire's novel, noting how the story has been reimagined for a new generation of viewers.(15:25) They discuss the history of the “Wicked” novel, its 2003 Broadway debut, and its long-running popularity. Father Brian shares his personal experience seeing the musical on tour many times, while Father Matt has only seen it performed once in East Lansing. They also analyze the decision to divide Wicked into two movies, comparing it to other adaptations like Dune. They debate whether the second movie truly adds value or simply prolongs the story for commercial reasons.(19:10) Father Matt and Father Brian explore how Wicked reinterprets the original Wizard of Oz, giving the Wicked Witch of the West a more nuanced perspective. They debate moments in the film that “tip their hat” to the original Oz story, weighing cleverness and homage against fan service and overuse of nostalgia.(30:05) The hosts examine the film's deeper themes, including power, manipulation, and the treatment of animals. They highlight how Glinda and Elphaba's friendship develops despite their differences and reflect on the two films' enduring message of friendship, personal growth, and the lasting impact others have on our lives.(41:33) The episode concludes with our hosts sharing their “seeds of the word” ratings for the films, based on how clearly they saw goodness, truth, and beauty reflected in the story.
Julia Washington (Prose and Glow) is back to dive deep into her feelings about Glinda now that she has seen Wicked: For Good. Natalie and Julia will discuss the deep amount of empathy Elphaba holds for Glinda, even when Glinda is still siding with Oz and taking the privileges that come along with that choice. They will also discuss Glinda's path to understanding it isn't enough to entertain the thought that there are oppressive systems surrounding you, eventually you do have to do some actions to bring about change. There will also be discussion surrounding how the media serves as a reflection of our society as well as some troubling thoughts on our society's diminishing media literacy. With the release of Wicked: For Good, Jewish audiences have been asking online: Are the munchkins supposed to be Jews? What about Elphaba—the vilified, bookish, green-skinned witch? Is she Jewish-coded? It's a question asked by some Jewish culture critics seemingly every time a movie with goblins, elves or hook-nosed monsters comes out. Are J.R.R. Tolkien's dwarves Jewish? Is Nosferatu Jewish? Are Star Trek's Ferengi species Jewish? And then, if the answer strikes you in the affirmative, the logical follow-up is: "Is this vaguely antisemitic?" But as our three rabbinic podcasters discuss on this week's episode of Not in Heaven, the question may reveal more about the person asking it than the onscreen goblins themselves. The real question may not be, "What were the filmmakers' intentions when creating these characters," and instead, "What does this negative interpretation say about us as a community?" But before that, Yedida takes a detour down a different cinematic road: a Jewish analysis of the heavily Christian animated film David, which is something of an origin story of the biblical king. Q&A on the film Wicked: For Good with co-screenwriter Dana Fox. Moderated by Mara Webster, In Creative Company. Elphaba, the future Wicked Witch of the West and her relationship with Glinda, the Good Witch of the North. The second of a two-part feature film adaptation of the Broadway musical.
"Wicked: For Good" is a musical fantasy sequel directed by Jon M. Chu that adapts the second act of the "Wicked" stage musical, itself inspired by Gregory Maguire's reimagining of "The Wizard of Oz." Starring returning cast members Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, Jonathan Bailey, and others, the film follows Elphaba and Glinda as they embrace their identities as the Wicked Witch of the West and Glinda the Good. Developed over a decade and split into two films to preserve the story's depth, production faced delays due to the pandemic and the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Released by Universal Pictures in November 2025, the film grossed $523 million worldwide, earned awards recognition from the Critics' Choice Awards and the Golden Globes, and was named one of the top ten films of the year by both the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute. Ever since its release, the Next Best Picture team has been conducting a series of interviews with many people involved in the making of the film, which we're proud to share with you below. First up, we have my interview with the film's director Jon M. Chu, followed Cody Dericks's interview with casting directors Tiffany Little Canfield & Bernard Telsey, then we have my intervew with the film's editor Myron Kerstein, followed by Cody's interview with makeup & hair designer Frances Hannon, then Dan Bayer's interview with sound mixer Simon Hayes, and then we end with Cody's interview with visual effects supervisor Pablo Helman. Please be sure to check out the film, which is now available to rent or own digitally or on physical media from Universal Pictures, and is up for your consideration for this year's Academy Awards in all eligible categories. Just as it did to kick off 2025, the Fantasy/Animation podcast returns once again following the festive break to celebrate the New Year with another visit to Oz, with Chris and Alex reflecting on movie musical Wicked: For Good (John M. Chu, 2025) that as with the first instalment released in 2024 discussed a year ago adapts Stephen Schwartz's successful 2003 theatre production. Topics for this first episode of 2026 include Wicked: For Good's heightened reflexivity around performance, deception, and the power of illusions that take place in front of and behind the curtain; Elphaba's political radicalism vs. the pragmatism of Glinda; necropolitical action and the film's targeting of who gets to live and who must die; ‘wickedness' and the emptiness (and reclaiming) of language; and where Wicked: For Good succeeds - and ultimately fails - as it seeks to find its own narrative in the intriguing ellipses of the Oz lore. **Fantasy/Animation theme tune composed by Francisca Araujo** **As featured on Feedspot's 25 Best London Education Podcasts**
In this episode of The Movie Men Podcast, Brady and Emily discuss Wicked: For Good, the continuation of the film adaptation of the hit Broadway musical. The story picks up after the events of Wicked: Part One, following Elphaba and Glinda as their paths diverge and the consequences of their choices begin to take shape in the Land of Oz. Building on the music, characters, and world introduced earlier, Wicked: For Good brings the second half of the stage story to the screen, exploring themes of power, loyalty, and identity against the backdrop of a familiar but reimagined Oz. Brady and Emily share their reactions to the film and reflect on how it functions as the conclusion to the two-part adaptation.

Transformations are often quite painful. Whether we're growing emotionally or undergoing a physical metamorphosis, real change usually demands discomfort, and sometimes even danger. In Jon M. Chu's Wicked films, the characters literally burst through their own limits: they sprout wings, become tin or straw, or learn to fly by defying gravity.Like all the past Wizard of Oz books and films, Wicked is a mirror of its time. Since the Covid pandemic, conservative movements around the globe have seized on a new scapegoat: openly trans and gender-diverse people. Despite being a tiny fraction of the population, trans folks have been painted as a massive cultural threat, a convenient distraction and a powerful tool for those hungry to seize political power. So what can Wicked teach us about facism? What can Elphaba's journey reveal about the machinery of oppression and about the yellow brick roads queer and trans people are still carving toward liberation?Today we're joined by trans-tech visionary Violet Kitajewski to explore Wicked as an allegory for LGBTQ resilience, transformation, and resistance. After all, that gravity isn't going to defy itself.Plus-- Cynthia Erivo and Arianna Grande announce they are in a “non-demi-curious, semi-binary relationship.”FEATURED MUSIC:Here Comes the Hurricane Legendary Katrina - Kevin JZ Prodigy★ https://youtu.be/GMKaa_q1eCg?si=d0F5b7bV9eSpG6_mFOLLOW US ON INSTAGRAM:★ instagram.com/transosaur★ instagram.com/faustofernos ★ instagram.com/marcfelionHelp Fausto & Marc Fight Blindness and Heart Disease★ https://gofund.me/00771d8fe

The Cinematography Podcast Episode 336: Alice Brooks, ASC For cinematographer Alice Brooks, ASC, shooting both Wicked and Wicked: For Good concurrently was a huge feat. The giant sets, precise camerawork and complex, live lighting cues for the musical numbers required detailed planning and prep. But first, Alice and her long-time collaborator, director Jon M. Chu, broke down the scripts and discussed the emotional intentions for each scene. “When we first start talking about a movie, we talk about emotion,” says Alice. “I love getting an emotional cue for the camera the same way an actor would. What is the emotional intention in the scene? An actor gets to tell the story through their breath and through their looks and through their being. And I get to tell the story, the emotional story, through camera and lenses and lighting.” Separation, seclusion and surrender were the emotional themes in Wicked: For Good. “It became very clear that the first movie would live in this ever-present daylight,” explains Alice. “And the second movie would have this weight and complexity and maturity and density to it and live in the shadows.” 90% of Wicked takes place in the daytime, with the sun setting as Elphaba (Cynthia Erivo) embraces her power, sings “Defying Gravity” and flies away. In contrast, Wicked: For Good takes place mostly at night, in the shadows, forest, and underbelly of Oz while Elphaba is in hiding. Alice chose to frame the characters Glinda and Elphaba in contrasting ways for the story. Now separated from Elphaba, Glinda (Ariana Grande) is central to the world of Oz. Alice kept her center punched, carefully composed and choreographed. Elphaba is framed always to the right or left, with tight close-ups and static hand-held shots, to emphasize her loneliness. When the two are together, Alice repeated the same motifs from the first movie, with Ephaba framed to the right and Glinda to the left, often holding hands. Though Wicked: For Good is a huge fantasy movie, Alice and the production crew tried to do as much practically and in camera as possible. The “Girl in the Bubble” dance sequence was done entirely with carefully choreographed mirrors and flyaway walls that were removed as Glinda dances. Alice planned it out using her daughter's bath toys and her husband's shaving mirror. The art department storyboarded it, then the special effects team was able to figure out all the mirror technology needed to pull it off. The camerawork had to be very precise, with many of the frames exactly matching the last, combining both a Technocrane and a Steadicam. Unreal Engine was an indispensable tool for Alice to aid the film's sophisticated lighting and shot design. She used the software to pre-visualize outdoor sets, making sure the sun was at the right angle for perfectly backlighting Glinda in her bubble over Munchkin Land. It also helped her discover where the sun would hit tall buildings and spires of the Emerald City. Unreal assisted with pre-lighting, finding where practical light sources could be integrated and built into interior sets. She even tested different camera lenses to see how they would look in the space under certain lighting conditions and at various angles and heights. Alice is the cinematographer for the upcoming animated Spiderman: Beyond The Spider-verse as well as an animated version of the Dr. Seuss book, Oh The Places You'll Go with director Jon M. Chu. Today on Script Apart, we're off to see the wizards – the wonderful storytelling wizards, that is, behind the first ever musical we've covered on the show. In the early ‘00s, New York-born-and-raised playwright Winnie Holzman was, like the rest of the city, still reeling from the September 11 attacks that claimed 2977 lives. It wasn't just the attacks themselves that haunted her – it was the division they wrought too. Racial minorities – America's Muslim population, specifically – were scapegoated and othered. All of a sudden, a war stood on the horizon. And so, Winnie got to work with composer Stephen Schwartz on a musical that would subtly grapple with the skyrocketing racism of that moment. Soon, something Wicked was to come our way.Inspired by a book of the same name by author Gregory Maguire, Winnie and Stephen's Broadway extravaganza took one of the defining stories in cinematic history – the Wizard Of Oz – and invited audiences to look at it a little differently. What if the so-called Wicked Witch Of The West in that film – all green skin and shrill cackle – wasn't actually the terroristic threat that Dorothy and viewers thought her to be? What if there was a more tender truth to this woman, who lest we forget, in that 1939 movie, was just trying to retrieve the ruby slippers worn by her dead sister, crushed by Dorothy's house when it's transported via tornado to Oz? Chances are you know what happened next. Forbes Magazine estimates that 65m people have seen Wicked since it hit Broadway in 2003, quickly expanding around the globe. It's the fourth longest-running play in Broadway history. And now, it's a blockbuster smash too. Last year, Winnie's screen adaptation of the musical, written with my other guest today, Dana Fox, of Cruella fame, began its emerald takeover of movie theatres. That first film, simply titled Wicked and covering the first half of the stage play, was a smash. Now, Wicked For Good is here, bringing this tale to the end of its yellow brick road, and Winnie and Dana are full of emotion and reflection. In the spoiler conversation you're about to hear, they tell me about the strangeness of this movie arriving in this particular political moment. I don't know about you guys at home, but the sight in Wicked and Wicked For Good of marginalised groups – munchkins and animals – rounded up and forced from their homes in a year of ICE raids and anti-immigrant anger, struck a really heartbreaking chord for me. It's not all politics, though, I promise! We also get into the prisons of perception that Elphaba and Glinda, played by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande respectively, both exist in and have to break free of in this story. And you'll also hear the pair's reflections on the huge differences between this story about the Gregory Maguire original, which saw Elphaba join an underground terror cell. Apparently in movie history, there are only 2 actors to have 3 Number 1 films in a year. This sounds crazy! So Movie Mike investigates to find out if that is actually true and breaks down what actors he thinks have had the single best year run in movies from his research. In the Movie Review, Mike talks about Wicked: For Good. Now demonized as the Wicked Witch of the West, Elphaba lives in exile in the Ozian forest, while Glinda resides at the palace in Emerald City, reveling in the perks of fame and popularity. As an angry mob rises against the Wicked Witch, she'll need to reunite with Glinda to transform herself, and all of Oz, for good. Mike shares why he felt it could have been one movie, Arianda Grande and Cynthia Erivo difference in performances, how it compares to the Broadway musical but why he loves what the franchise has done for the movie theater experience. In the Trailer Park, Mike talks about Super Mario Galaxy starring Chris Pratt and Anya Taylor-Joy. He shares why he thinks about the new voice actors joining the cast and where it ranks on his list of most anticipated video game movies and his favorite Super Mario games. New Episodes Every Monday! It's time to embrace our witchy obsession as we review Wicked: For Good, the long-awaited second chapter of Elphaba and Glinda's story! Sarah is joined by Julie Gildersleeve, Courtney Turckel, and Kelly Turckel; we head to Oz together for a spoiler-filled discussion of how this film expands on the stage musical while weaving more tightly into the events of The Wizard of Oz. With Elphaba in exile and Glinda rising as the "Good" face of the Wizard's regime, the story explores friendship, perception, sacrifice, and what it truly means to be seen as "wicked" or "good." We break down the emotional weight of the film — from Glinda's heartbreaking loneliness beneath her bubbly public persona, to Elphaba's fierce determination to protect the animals and expose the truth. We also dive into standout musical moments, including the heart-breaking "For Good," the haunting "No Good Deed," the introspective "The Girl in the Bubble," and the love song "As Long As You're Mine." The vocals, cinematography, and performances (especially Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo) are nothing short of stunning. We also explore the tragic origins of the Cowardly Lion, Tin Man, and Scarecrow, calling out the storytelling hidden in the costume design and emotional consequences of each character's transformation. But more than anything, this group of girlfriends dives into the heart of the story — Elphaba and Glinda — and how their friendship, and ours, has been changed for good.
