As normie conservatives casually throw around terms like "Bonapartist" to describe Trump's new administration, we've entered a peculiar moment where Marxist terminology has infiltrated mainstream political discourse—often without its theoretical underpinnings. This wide-ranging conversation explores the historical parallels between today's political landscape and 19th century France, when General Boulanger's right-wing populist movement tempted certain leftists into dangerous alliances. Donald Parkinson of Marxist Unity Group and Cosmonaut Magazine helps us clarify. We dissect the contradictory coalition behind Trump's second administration: an unlikely alliance between traditional middle American constituencies and Silicon Valley tech oligarchs that has fundamentally altered the movement's character. This creates a uniquely modern version of Bonapartism, where executive power operates independently from other ruling class factions, but with enthusiastic backing from tech billionaires rather than reluctant acceptance from established elites. The historical debate between Engels and Paul Lafargue proves remarkably relevant today. Engels vehemently opposed leftist alliances with Boulanger, insisting socialists must maintain political independence while defending democratic institutions against right-wing authoritarianism. Today's versions of this debate—from "MAGA communism" to various post-left tendencies—echo Lafargue's failed argument that riding right-wing populism would ultimately benefit socialism. As liberal institutions prove remarkably fragile against authoritarianism and traditional left strategies seem inadequate, we face fundamental questions about political strategy. How can socialists build independent politics without becoming either appendages to liberalism or useful idiots for the right? What does defending democratic rights look like when the constitutional order itself is crumbling? And how do we understand class politics when traditional definitions no longer map neatly onto social reality? This conversation offers essential historical context and strategic clarity for navigating our deteriorating political landscape—a moment when understanding the mistakes of the past might help us avoid repeating them.Send us a text Musis by Bitterlake, Used with Permission, all rights to BitterlakeSupport the showCrew:Host: C. Denmark is known as a progressive bastion in a right-moving Europe – and its leadership is making the case that restricting immigration is the path to maintaining its liberal society. David Leonhardt is an editorial director at The New York Times. He joins host Krys Boyd to discuss Denmark's Center-Left party, which argues that restraining immigration and demanding immigrants assimilate quickly is the only way the country can continue to provide its generous social programs. And we'll hear if U.S. Democratic Party leaders are taking note. His article is “In an Age of Right-Wing Populism, Why Are Denmark's Liberals Winning?” Learn about your ad choices: dovetail.prx.org/ad-choices

Happy Monday! Sam and Emma speak with Nathan Tankus, proprietor of the Notes on the Crises newsletter, to discuss the reporting that Elon Musk and his associates have taken over crucial payment controls in the Treasury Department. First, Sam and Emma run through updates on Trump's shutdown of USAID, tariffs on México, Canada, and China, Trump's funding freeze and firing of the head of the CFPB, Israel's bombing of the West Bank, Louisiana's arrest warrant against a New York doctor over reproductive care, major pro-immigration protests, and Ken Martin's election to the chair of the DNC, before expanding on the enraging inaction of Democratic Party Leadership in the face of Trump's destruction of the administrative state. Nathan Tankus then joins, diving right into the escalating Elon Musk-related crises that began at the core of the US government this past weekend, zeroing in on the biggest of the three, Elon's aggressive takeover of the US Treasury, including a dissection of their data and payment systems. Expanding on this, Tankus tackles the incredibly complex and sensitive nature of the data and systems the Trump regime is after, with key, veteran Treasury officials resigning in the wake of Musk's advances, unpacking the extensive risks of allowing Musk and Co. access to this information, from the obvious (giving the utmost sensitive data on US citizens to a private actor) and institutional (our entire country runs on the treasury making these payments) to how it could bolster the Trump's administration's disregard for agency cooperation. After briefly touching on the genuine illegality of many of these actions (and why that likely won't matter), Nathan walks Sam and Emma through the role of mission-critical systems like the Treasury, and the intrinsic need to embrace the inefficiency of a system when constantly necessary to build up its robustness and reliability in case of crisis, before wrapping up by touching on Trump's path to the Supreme Court over the Impoundment Control Act. And in the Fun Half: Sam and Emma watch cosplay icon Kristi Noam defend Trump's warning of some “short-term pain” for the US public over his tariff agenda, unpack ICE's ongoing campaign of tyranny, and listen to Canadian sports fans rain down jeers to the US National Anthem. Steve Bannon has some thoughts on the liberal world order and the value of Right-Wing Populism, Chappelle Roan highlights exploitation in the music industry, and the Daily Wire's Andrew Klavan waxes poetic on the “laws of nature” that lead to women getting beaten by their husbands, plus, your calls and IMs! A conversation with Dr. John Komlos, Professor Emeritus of the University of Munich, who has edited and contributed to the book, Neoliberal Economic Policy and The Rise of Right-Wing Populism in which I have written a chapter. Dr. Komlos discusses how past economic policies have given rise to working class discontent and the rise of far-right ideas and policies. This book has a message and warning about the future of US democracy. It has recently been published, and for more information on it, here is the publisher's site for the book: https://link.springer.com/book/10.1007/978-3-031-74979-7

It's Casual Friday! Emma speaks with Kyle Kulinski, co-host of the Kyle Kulinski Show & Krystal Kyle and Friends, to round up the week in news. First, Emma runs through updates on growing famine in Gaza as winter nears, Israel's land grab in Syria, Trump's threat to Iran, Trump's advisors, Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Pelosi's undermining of AOC's Oversight committee bid, RFK's newest vaccine objection (polio), Trump's banking deregulation agenda, and Macron's newest centrist PM, before watching Peter Thiel sputter through a defense of the US healthcare system and the (former) UnitedHealthcare CEO. Kyle Kulinski then joins as he reflects on Nancy Mace's complex and intersectional relationship with the bathroom, Democrats' willingness to capitulate to and embrace Trump's fascist scapegoating of trans people and immigrants, and the importance of actually acknowledging your constituents' issues in winning elections. Kyle and Emma also tackle the absurd narrative about Trump and the GOP's right-wing populism, parsing particularly through the facade of Trump's anti-war persona before touching on the pseudo-populism of RFK's relationship with Big Pharma. Wrapping up, they unpack the state of “independent” media, the growing embrace of far-right lunacy as long as it comes with a billionaire's backing, and the need for the Democratic party to look left for success. And in the Fun Half: Emma unpacks the tension around the humanitarian crisis in the US-backed Al-Hol detention center in Syria with Owen from LA, The Letterhack previews his show with Ronald Raygun tonight, and Juliet from Portland gives Emma a lesson in AGP. The MR Crew also covers the arrest of a Lakeland, Florida woman over saying “Delay, Deny, Depose. You people are next” after being denied healthcare and Sen. Blumenthall's Musk suckup, also talking with Jackson in Colorado about media comprehension in the US. They also watch Daniel Penny aptly thank the fact that “someone” didn't get hurt in his killing of Jordan Neely, and touch on the TYT's floundering attempts to pivot right, plus, your calls and IMs! We talk about labor movements, and progressive neoliberalism. We discuss the current state of democracy across the globe, the recent rise of right-wing populism, and the relationship between populism and fascism. Robert Neubauer studies the media strategies of Canadian environmental and pro-resource extraction social movements, with a focus on populist discourse and public mobilization around proposed energy infrastructure. He is currently a Post-doctoral Researcher and Limited Term Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology at the University of Victoria, where he teaches on contemporary media studies and climate politics. In this episode, Robert and I chat about how an effective communication strategy for rallying the public in support of climate action really needs to validate the public's concerns about things like affordability and health care, while also emphasizing the urgency of the climate crisis. The way we do that, he says, is to create an effective political “container.” I get the sense that the phrase “a big tent” applies here. I've been hearing from a lot of people that expanding the tent, when it comes to transformative changes to infrastructure and to our lifestyles, implies the need to communicate the everyday benefits of climate action, while also being realistic with audiences about the severity of the risks we face. If we fall short in our efforts to convince folks that a radical reset is required – so, if we can't figure out a way to undermine the cultural importance of the automobile, for example – then we're in even more serious trouble than the science tells us we are. That's because a creeping fatalism is forcing a lot of people to court the idea that it's too late. Neubauer says that nihilism is potentially more dangerous than far right populism. Robert unpacks the idea of petro-populism here, which is still a concept that I struggle with a bit. I find Neubauer's way of bringing this idea into conversation with the notion of “cultural capital” really helpful. Robert uses this famous idea from Pierre Bourdieu's work to talk about how petro-populism expresses itself and how it has secured such a prominent place culturally and politically. Neubauer gives us a way of critiquing the propaganda of petro-populists like Ezra Levant, whose ability to manipulate a sense of pride and feelings of national belonging have proven to be remarkably effective. In response to the pull of nostalgia and easy answers, the Left can't focus on its standard techniques of shaming and allyship. Robert feels like these are now simplistic strategies that go nowhere. Resisting the stunting effects of facile forms of solidarity or public shaming is all about accepting real responsibility for the work of decolonization. The constraints of a carbon-intensive society make it hard to imagine any alternative to the way things are, but things are changing nonetheless. As companies with skin in the carbon game realize they need to aggressively brand fossil fuels as an integral part of our lives to maintain their normalized status, the climate movement is positioning itself to counter with a totally different relationship to energy.
In this Report, Richard contrasts right-wing populism which is pro-Zionist with the far-right who are opposed to Zionist influence. Despite this big difference should the far-right support right-wing populist candidates as a stepping stone? The European elections have once again shown that the barrier against the extreme right has subsided. In his presentation, Gerald Knaus argues that migration fears drive populist leaders like Viktor Orban and Donald Trump to undermine post-war liberal democracies. Using examples from Austria, France, Italy, and Germany, Dr Knaus will demonstrate how these fears have enabled the far-right to achieve their strongest results in recent European elections. He offers suggestions on how to improve migration management in Europe by moving towards a more humane legal system which balances border control and human rights by introducing fast and fair asylum procedures, strategic deportations, and legal mobility for migrants. He also discusses partnership agreements and other options to deter illegal migration. About the Speaker: Gerald Knaus is an Austrian migration expert and a well-known advisor on migration policy. He is the founding chairman of the European Stability Initiative (ESI) think tank and a founding member of the European Council on Foreign Relations. An accomplished author, in 2020, he published the award-winning SPIEGEL bestseller “What Borders Do We Need?” and prior to that he wrote a book in 2011 with the British writer and then politician Rory Stewart entitled: “Can Intervention Work? He was an Associate Fellow at the Kennedy School in Harvard University for five years and has lectured at the Institute for Human Sciences (IWM) in Vienna, at the State University of Ukraine and at the NATO College in Rome. Apart from refugee issues, his expertise covers economics, southern Europe and the Balkans, rule of law in Europe, and corruption.

It’s Super Tuesday, and we’re talking about something that’s on the ballot in many nations around the world: populism. Right-wing populist movements have been gaining popularity in democracies like Hungary, Italy, India and the United States, to name a few. On the show today, sociologist Bart Bonikowski breaks down what populism is, how it shows up on the left and right, why right-wing populism seems to be catching foothold in so many countries and the economic factors at play. Plus, why this year could be a test for global democracy. Then, the reason you may be having trouble getting your prescription drugs lately. And, we’ll hear from our listeners about their favorite anime series. Here’s everything we talked about today: “It’s a major global election year, and populism is on the ballot” from Ipsos “Trump, Brexit, and the Rise of Populism: Economic Have-Nots and Cultural Backlash” from Harvard Kennedy School “Revealed: the rise and rise of populist rhetoric” from The Guardian “Populism is morphing in insidious ways” from The Atlantic “US 2.0: Not at the Dinner Table” from Hidden Brain Media “How a health-care cyberattack may affect your prescription drug access” from The Washington Post “Calls Mount for Government Help as Change Healthcare Hack Freezes Medical Payments” from The Wall Street Journal “China's New Economic Agenda, a Lot Like the Old One: Takeaways” from The New York Times Subscribe to the “Make Me Smart” newsletter We want to hear your answer to the Make Me Smart question. Recently, Geert Wilders, an anti-Islam, far-right populist, won the general elections in the Netherlands. In Argentina, the far-right politician, Javier Milei, won the presidential elections. In 2022, Marine Le Pen finished a close second in the French presidential elections; and a party with roots in the neo-fascist Italian Social Movement won the general elections in Italy. In the U.S., early polls suggest that Donald Trump has a chance of returning to power again. In India, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is widely expected to win a third term. Is right-wing populism seeing a resurgence across the world? Irfan Nooruddin and Rahul Mukherji discuss the question in a conversation moderated by Radhika Santhanam.
Geert Wilders, Javier Milei, Donald Trump, Boris Johnson! Crazy hair populists are on our minds and we want to understand why the West is so vulnerable to these right-wing populists. What aspects of the Western Bubble led to larger and larger parts of society voting right-wing populists parties? Geert Wilders has been described as the Dutch Donald Trump. Earlier this month his far-right Freedom Party pulled off a surprise election victory in the Netherlands. Following Mr Wilder's win, we're looking at what's driving right-wing populism in Europe. Italy has a right-wing populist prime minister. In Hungary there's Viktor Orban - prime minister since 2010 - with his particular brand of nationalist populism, and in Finland the far-right Finns party is now part of the governing coalition. Are some of the factors that secured Geert Wilders' win also what is helping other right-wing populists in Europe? In a European context, does right-wing populism differ from far-rights politics ? Why are parts of Europe drifting right? What are the factors behind this? What's driving right-wing populism in Europe and what does it mean for the continent?Shaun Ley is joined by:Catherine Fieschi, a comparative political analyst specialising in populism, far right and authoritarian politics and a Fellow at the Robert Schuman Centre at the European University Institute in Florence. Episode 240. I break down the out-of-nowhere hit song "Rich Men North of Richmond", the extremely strong populism rising in America, and how both Leftists in Academia and the Vet-Bro crowd are quick to both dismiss the very real anger and what people are doing about it. I love malapropisms. My favorite: A number of years ago, a bar mitzvah kid was leading services from an earlier Reform prayer book, “Gates of Prayer.” He was supposed to have read: “In a world torn by violence and pain …” Instead, it came out of his mouth as: “In a world torn by violence and prayer …” He got that right. My guest is Professor Marcia Pally. Professor Pally teaches at New York University and at Fordham University and held the Mercator Guest Professorship in the theology department at Humboldt University-Berlin, where she is an annual guest professor. Her latest book is “White Evangelicals and Right-wing Populism: How Did We Get Here?” We discuss her concerns about right-wing evangelical populism. Want to watch something terrifying? Check out this video of the song “Onward Christian Soldiers.” Watch those young, beautiful children doing exactly as the lyrics would teach: preparing to become Christian soldiers, marching as to war. The images are terrifying. This subject is so hot, so alive and, frankly, so upsetting — precisely because it is about the weaponization of faith. A group of insurrectionists, including Jacob Chansley (shirtless), prays inside the U.S. Senate chamber after breaching the Capitol, Jan. 6, 2021, in Washington. Video screen grab via Luke Mogelson/The New Yorker Check out this quote from Professor Pally's book: Among those who on January 6, 2021 rioted at the US Capitol building claiming that the 2020 election had been stolen from Donald Trump was a small group that stormed the Senate chamber. Removing his horned helmet, a bare-chested “shaman” figure named Jacob Chansley led the group in prayer: Thank you heavenly father for gracing us with this opportunity… to allow us to exercise our rights, to allow us to send a message to all the tyrants, the communists, and the globalists, that this is our nation, not theirs. We will not allow America, the American way of the United States of America to go down … Thank you divine, omniscient and omnipresent creator God for blessing each and every one of us here and now …. In Christ's holy name, we pray. I could not put Professor Pally's book down, and then I went on to watch Andrew Callaghan's documentary “This Place Rules,” which just came out and which is available on HBO Max. It is a chronicle of his trips across the United States, visiting people who wound up — or whose compatriots wound up — on the steps of the Capitol building on Jan. 6. Many of these people were terrifying. I also mean they were physically terrifying. While I believe everyone has the right to do with their bodies as they want to — these people seem to have gone out of their way to alter their appearances so as to look really scary. They define the meaning of terror. It worked. I have to say: It terrified me. The whole issue of how faith becomes intertwined with right-wing politics, violent bigotries — all of that — I was fascinated. Grimly fascinated. I was grimly fascinated and terrified and depressed by the interviews in the film with children who believe in various conspiracy theories, including the QAnon conspiracy theory. But even more than that: I found it absolutely revolting that they were quoting those theories and then using terms like “globalist” or “Rothschilds,” which are antisemitic dog whistles. All of which reminded me of something about faith. The late Lord Rabbi Jonathan Sacks, who served as the chief rabbi of Great Britain and who had a warm relationship with the current King Charles, once said — and it has always stayed with me — that religion has the power to make good people better, and it has the power to make bad people worse. It is ultimately our choice.

Shawn Rosenberg is a professor of political science and psychology at UC Irvine and one of the world's foremost experts in political psychology. He warns that the average American and other people who live in countries governed by Western-style democracies may be fundamentally unable to follow through on the basic responsibilities of being responsible citizens. Such a deficiency helps to explain why right-wing fake populism and other forms of authoritarianism and fascism are compelling to so many people – and that saving American and Western-style democracy from the rising fascist tide will require fundamental reforms of the educational system and democratic institutions. In this wide-ranging conversation Shawn Rosenberg also explains why Trump's followers and those of other right-wing populists and demagogues are so attracted to violence, conspiracism, nationalism, racism, bigotry, the cult of ignorance, dark charisma and the other anti-social values and beliefs that animate such movements. Marcia Pally, a professor at New York University and guest professor at Humboldt University-Berlin, talks with Word&Way President Brian Kaylor about her new book White Evangelicals and Right-Wing Populism: How Did We Get Here? She also discusses Jan. 6, political history, and economics. Note: Don't forget to check out our subscriber e-newsletter A Public Witness that helps you make sense of faith, culture, and politics.
Our first international interview with guest Dr. Marcia Pally as we talk about her book "White Evangelicalism and Right Wing Populism: How Did We Get Here?". We discuss the duresses that white Evangelicals perceive themselves to be under, a history of how those perceived stressors and "us vs them" thinking inflames right wing populism. We also discuss how some Evangelicals at the end of the 1800s and beginning of the 1900s were socialists and/or supported more social programs. Toward the end, we talk briefly about her book on Leonard Cohen. Professor Pally teaches at New York University, at Fordham University and is an annual guest professor at Humboldt University's Theology Faculty. In 2019-2020 she was a Fellow and The Center for Theological Inquiry, Princeton. Her research interests are culture, religion, and politics as well as the intersection of culture and language. Right-wing populism is growing in the West and its members talk a lot about recovering Christian values. But how Christian are they really, what do they mean by Christian values, and does the media tell the truth about who they are? This is part one of a double episode with Dr Tobias Cremer of Oxford University. He surprised us all with his insights about ‘cultural evangelicalism', the tension within the idea of ‘liberal democracy' and what right-wing populists say when you ask them ‘What is Christianity?' In 2016, fresh off dual victories in a referendum criminalizing immigrants and a parliamentary election that brought them nearly 30% of seats, the far-right Swiss People's Party seemed destined to pass a second enforcement initiative to strip Swiss residents with foreign passports of any due process rights. With opposition parties and major human rights groups leery of taking on a campaign they considered a lost cause, the newly formed Operation Libero jumped in. With virtually no resources, they thwarted the right-wing framing of the initiative to defeat the referendum by 18 points.
