From 2015- Mark Crispin Miller, a professor of media at NYU, talks about his internet project through Open Media called The Forbidden Bookshelf, which makes availability an array of controversial books that have either been suppressed or banned outright. The conversation includes a thought-provoking discussion about the notion of free expression of ideas and how limited it often is.
TENE pod takes a lesson from James Stewart Martin's nearly-lost 1950 book, All Honorable Men: The Story of the Men on Both Sides of the Atlantic Who Successfully Thwarted Plans to Dismantle the Nazi Cartel System, to get a fuller sense of the American ruling class' relationship to inter-war, wartime, and post-war fascism in Europe, as well as Nazi capitalists' attempts to set up fallback positions within US Industry after the Nazis' military defeat. reading: All Honorable Men by James Stewart Martin (1950) republished by Forbidden Bookshelf in 2016. Propaganda Expert Is In Trouble For… Teaching About PropagandaIrony Deficiency and Truth Decay in “Not-See” AmericaAired Tuesday, April 27, 2021 at 2:00 PM PST / 5:00 PM ESTDisclaimer: The views expressed on this show are those of the host and guests and do not necessarily reflect the views of OMTimes Media.Interview with Author, Journalist and Professor Mark Crispin Miller“Notseeism: Deadly disease of the body politic where people choose to not see what is too uncomfortable to look at.” — Swami BeyondanandaAs the Swami has been telling us for years now, the body politic is one sick puppy, suffering from irony deficiency … truth decay … electile dysfunction … and most recently from bi-polar disorder. As a result, what we used to call democracy is in the intensive care unit – and those who intensively care about its survival are finding themselves more and more marginalized. Fortunately, we still have that bastion of truth, academia, where in the spirit of the Free Speech Movement more than half a century ago, academic freedom is alive and well as professors and students freely and frankly discuss the most divisive issues of our time.Oh … wait a minute. That must be happening in a parallel universe. In this universe, a professor who has literally written the book on propaganda – or at least wrote the preface to one – is on the verge of being fired for teaching about propaganda. His crime? Pointing out the propaganda being promoted by the university itself.Fortunately, his colleagues at the university have bravely rallied around him, and …Oh … OK. That too is happening in a parallel universe.Oh, well. All’s well that ends Orwell. Our guest today, Mark Crispin Miller, has been fighting “notseeism” for decades, courageously pointing out those uncomfortable truths that others choose to not see. Now he is embroiled in his own battle to keep his position at NYU, after unmasking the propaganda about masking, and being guilty of “hate speech” – now defined as saying anything that the power structure hates to hear.Mark Crispin Miller earned his bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University in 1971, and his doctorate in English from Johns Hopkins University in 1977. He is currently a Professor of Media, Culture and Communication at New York University. He is the author of several books, including, The Bush Dyslexicon: Observations on a National Disorder, Cruel and Unusual: Bush/Cheney’s New World Order and Fooled Again: The Real Case for Electoral Reform (2007).Miller is the editor of Forbidden Bookshelf, an e-book series that revives important works now out of print, most of which were variously killed at birth. He also wrote the introduction to the 2004 edition of Edward Bernays’ book Propaganda. New York University professor Mark Crispin Miller simply asked his students to do research on masking before they believed the narrative of the mainstream media. After all, he was teaching a class called "Mass Persuasion and Propaganda." The very idea of the class is to foster recognition of the tools of persuasion and propaganda that are a daily part of the students' society, culture, and news media. For this, one student reported Miller to the administration, demanding, on Twitter, that he be fired. This is not the first time Miller has been called before an NYU board, as you will hear on this episode of "The Midnight Writer News Show." Miller joins S.T. Patrick to discuss the controversy, the efficacy of masking, the devolution of the left, the failures of the media, and much more. Mark Crispin Miller operates a popular daily mailing list that can and should be followed at MarkCrispinMiller.com. You can sign the petition to "Support Academic Freedom" here. Miller is also the editor of the Forbidden Bookshelf series from Open Road Media. He is the author of Boxed In: The Culture of Television (1988), Seeing Through Movies (edited, 1990), The Bush Dyslexicon: Observations on a National Disorder (2001), Cruel and Unusual: Bush/Cheney's New World Order (2004), and Fooled Again: How the Right Stole the 2004 Election and Why They'll Steal the Next One Too (Unless We Stop Them) (2005). Mark Crispin Miller – Masking Unmasked!A Journey to a Parallel UniverseAired Tuesday, September 1, 2020 at 2:00 PM PST / 5:00 PM ESTInterview with Author and Journalist Mark Crispin Miller“What a topsy-turvy time we are living in. These days, the ones WITHOUT the masks are the outlaws.” — Swami BeyondanandaOn this week’s show, we are going to take a journey to a parallel universe – a reality just as real as this one, maybe even more real, where people believe that wearing masks DOESN’T make most people safer during the COVID crisis. It’s a reality where thousands of Europeans have taken to the streets to protest lockdown, where a huge crowd listened to Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. speak out against mandatory vaccinations in the same spot where his Uncle John F. Kennedy spoke in Berlin nearly sixty years ago. It’s a reality where the people who showed up are not right-wing neo-Nazis as the New York Times proclaimed, but ordinary citizens from across the political spectrum alarmed by what they see as totalitarianism. Our guide is journalist Mark Crispin Miller, who set out on a journey some fifteen years ago to delve into the truth about America’s “electile dysfunction”, and found himself at odds with his own “progressive” tribe. The further he has gone into exploring what others have termed “conspiracy theories”, the more he has discovered “con’s piracy facts” – discomforting truths that indicate that those with too much money and too much power – conman pirates — have already decided what our future will be like, and this future may not be to our liking. In these apocalyptic – and in many ways apoplectic – times when the veils are being lifted on all sorts of things we would prefer not to look at, Mark has had the courage to speak up where others are silent. I may not agree with everything he says, and I don’t expect you to either. And … beyond the polarizing and incomplete narratives on both sides, Mark is going to give you a chance to look at a bigger picture.Mark Crispin Miller earned his bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University in 1971, and his doctorate in English from Johns Hopkins University in 1977. Mark Crispin Miller – Fake News and Real LiesWho Needs Conspiracy Theories When You Have “Con’s Piracy Facts”?Aired Tuesday, May 12, 2020 at 2:00 PM PST / 5:00 PM ESTInterview with Journalist and Author Mark Crispin Miller“Censorship – it’s not the vicious lies they fear, it’s those vicious truths.” — Swami BeyondanandaThere is a telling quote I ran across, purportedly by Ronald Reagan’s CIA director William Casey: “We will know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false.”So if you’re confused about what is true in the age of COVID-19 … relax. It’s part of the plan. At a time when we have a pathologically blatant liar in the White House, a corporate media that cannot be trusted, and Google, You Tube, Facebook, and Twitter de-platforming dissenting opinions at the behest of the powers that be in power, who or what are we to believe? How do we practice discernment? Our guest this week, Mark Crispin Miller, is a voice in the bewilderness, whose views bridge and transcend the established left and right narratives, as he takes on issues such as fixed elections, the controversy over vaccines, and media censorship.Mark Crispin Miller earned his bachelor’s degree from Northwestern University in 1971, and his doctorate in English from Johns Hopkins University in 1977. EN - An interview with scholar and author Mark Crispin Miller, professor at NYU and editor of the Forbidden Bookshelf series of e-books, on neoliberalism and its impacts on education, democracy, and media. In English. Aired May 14-20, 2015.
The Forbidden Bookshelf is a series of formerly banned books with the stated aim of “filling in the blanks of America’s repressed history by resurrecting books that focused on issues and events that are too often left in the dark, including abortion, organized crime, the CIA and financial inequality.” In this installment of “Leonard Lopate at Large,” Leonard talks to NYU professor of media studies Mark Crispin Miller who curates the series, about why he chose the works he did and discusses the complicated history behind some of the selections.
Episode 66 - What?! - Banned Books - Banning Is Not Good! - But Freddie Is ;-) Helloo...this is Stephanie...Talk, Tales and Trivia! Stephanie just loves this episode topic that is about banning and censoring what we read. It's a great topic to debate but because Stephanie doesn't have anyone to debate with, we'll take her word for it...banning any reading material is not good. Let's see if you agree with her views. Then in Stephanie's rave go on and stand up and applaud a man (and the band) who needs no introductions (we're not telling you who it is). This week Eric sits down with author and academic Mark Crispin Miller to discuss the controlled corporate media and its grip on discourse in the United States, conspiracy theories versus conspiracy facts, US elections as both farce and illusion, and much more. Eric and Mark begin with a discussion of the history of media propaganda, and how the corporate media we know and loathe came to be the monolithic servant of power it is today. The conversation then turns to the issue of conspiracy theories and the importance of nuanced analysis that is skeptical of power but also avoids the pitfalls, and outright fascism, of the online conspiracy world. The final part of the program shifts into vote fraud and the controlled and manipulated election system in the US which, Eric and Mark both argue, simply cannot be trusted. So much ground is covered in this wide-ranging discussion on CounterPunch Radio. Also, check out the Forbidden Bookshelf series edited by Mark Crispin Miller. Mark Crispin Miller of NYU discusses some of the recent additions to his Forbidden Bookshelf series, which seeks out important out-of-print political works and republishes them as e-books; Miller explains the insidious ways the books were first “disappeared.” Next, Peter Hart with the National Coalition Against Censorship speaks about this year's Banned Books Week, and some of the means — short of outright banning — which keep important books away from students. The program concludes with Gerry Condon of Vets for Peace, speaking about the historic vessel Golden Rule, brought to San Francisco as part of a protest against the U.S. Navy's annual Fleet Week activities there.
