Ethics Untangled
36. Is Drag Problematic? With Simon Kirchin

Ethics Untangled

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 7, 2025 52:53

Drag is a type of performance which uses clothing and makeup to imitate and often exaggerate female gender signifiers and gender roles. It's an activity with a long and varied history, and continues to be a very popular form of entertainment, as attested by TV shows such as Ru Paul's Drag Race. It's also distinctive in having faced criticism from several different political directions, including conservative, transgender and feminist perspectives. In this conversation with Simon Kirchin, who is Professor of Applied Ethics, Director of IDEA, The Ethics Centre and someone who has experience as a drag performer himself, we mainly focused on the feminist critique. The problem is that drag typically involves men (a relatively advantaged group) imitating women (a relatively disadvantaged group), in a way that plays on often offensive stereotypes about women, for entertainment. Described in that way, it seems uncomfortably similar to blackface, a form of entertainment which follows a very similar dynamic, at least superficially, on racial lines. Professor Kirchin thinks a moral difference between these two activities can be identified, though, and in the conversation he explains why.You can read Simon's article on the topic here.Book your place at our public event with Gavin Esler, "Dead Cats, Strategic Lying and Truth Decay", here. Comment on the Show by Sending Mark a Text Message. Are your performance reviews legitimate, or are they tools of deceit? This episode digs deep into the dangerous world of performance defamation in the workplace. We examine the alarming trend where employers, motivated by profit and legal strategies, resort to crafting false narratives about employee performance, especially targeting those who dare to speak up. You'll hear about truth decay—a phenomenon that enables opinions to masquerade as facts—making it difficult for employees to trust their evaluations or their employers. Through compelling stories and expert insights, we'll unravel the cycle of manipulation in workplace assessments, showcasing how even high-performing employees can suddenly find themselves unjustly labeled as incompetent. Additionally, we discuss the disingenuous Performance Improvement Plan process, a technique employers often abuse to push out workers while masking their motives. Join us for insights that shed light on the core issues affecting our identities tied to meaningful work. We challenge listeners to question their evaluations and advocate for a workplace that values truth and fairness. Don't forget to subscribe, share, and leave a review! On this encore episode of The Nurse Keith Show nursing and healthcare career podcast, Keith interviews Dr. G. Rumay Alexander, EdD, RN, FAAN, a noted presenter, provocateur, consultant, professor of nursing, and the American Nurses Association's current Scholar-In-Residence. In the course of their conversation, Keith and Dr. Alexander converse on a variety of subjects, including being a Black nurse who embodies the dream that Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. so passionately described in his famous speech. Dr. Alexander abhors what she refers to as "truth decay", and she is passionate about busting stereotypes. Detesting being put in a box, she has dedicated her life to kicking down the sides of the box and speaking and giving voice to the hurts and slights suffered by so many throughout history. Dr. Alexander feels blessed to have had a seat at so many tables, and advises others to get themselves into spaces where they can be seen and heard, and thus have more impact. G. Rumay Alexander, EdD, RN, FAAN is a professor in the School of Nursing, Assistant Dean of Relational Excellence at the Adams School of Dentistry, and formerly the Associate Vice-Chancellor for Diversity and Inclusion/Chief Diversity Officer of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. In February of 2021, she became the American Nurses Association's Scholar-In-Residence and advises the National Commission to Address Racism in Nursing. Dr. Alexander is the Senior Vice President for Clinical and Professional Services at the Tennessee Hospital Association and their first vice president of color for two decades. As one of nursing's prominent thought leaders, guiding individuals in academic, corporate, health care and religious organizations in the exploration of marginalizing processes and lived experiences of difference, Dr. Alexander's expertise has and continues to be frequently sought. She has been appointed to several transformative healthcare initiatives addressing diversity, equity and inclusion including the Commission of Workforce for Hospitals and Health Systems of the American Hospital Association (over 500,000 copies of the report have been distributed nationally and internationally), the Tri-Council of Nursing, and the National Quality Forum's steering committee which developed the first national voluntary consensus standards for nursing-sensitive care.  ----------- Contact Nurse Keith about holistic career coaching to elevate your nursing and healthcare career at NurseKeith.com. The only way to live in truth is to love the truth! In this message from 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12, Pastor Joey looks at the vital importance of TRUTH in an ever-increasingly deceptive world that is manipulated by Satan. The text speaks of the Return of Christ, the Rapture, and the "Man of Lawlessness" (the Anti-Christ), but it also emphasizes the importance the absolute truths of God, God's Word, and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. For believers, we need to be discerning and wise to filter truth from lies. The days are here where people love falsehoods more than truth. Message preached on Sunday, November 5, 2023 at ParkerDC as part ten in the "Standing Firm" series.

Why You Should Celebrate the Hollywood Strike

Given the strike of Hollywood actors and writers, it is an apt time to reflect on our use of media and entertainment. A quote from Neil Postman's class book, Amusing Ourselves to Death, can guide us. "Our politics, religion, news, athletics, education and commerce have been transformed into congenial adjuncts of show business, largely without protest or even much popular notice. The result is that we are a people on the verge of amusing ourselves to death." [Postman, Neil. Amusing Ourselves to Death (pp. 3-4). Penguin Publishing Group. Kindle Edition.] We may want to pull away from entertainment, especially focusing on the moving image, and immerse ourselves in reading unelectrified books in pursuit of a more Christian mind and way of taking in the world. As Paul exhorts us: "Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. 2 Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will." (Romans 12:1-2). Consider the biblical warnings about images, as discussed by Postman.  "In studying the Bible as a young man, I found intimations of the idea that forms of media favor particular kinds of content and therefore are capable of taking command of a culture. I refer specifically to the Decalogue [Exodus 20:1-18], the Second Commandment of which prohibits the Israelites from making concrete images of anything. “Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water beneath the earth.” I wondered then, as so many others have, as to why the God of these people would have included instructions on how they were to symbolize, or not symbolize, their experience. It is a strange injunction to include as part of an ethical system unless its author assumed a connection between forms of human communication and the quality of a culture. We may hazard a guess that a people who are being asked to embrace an abstract, universal deity would be rendered unfit to do so by the habit of drawing pictures or making statues or depicting their ideas in any concrete, iconographic forms. The God of the Jews was to exist in the Word and through the Word, an unprecedented conception requiring the highest order of abstract thinking. Iconography thus became blasphemy so that a new kind of God could enter a culture. People like ourselves who are in the process of converting their culture from word-centered to image-centered might profit by reflecting on this Mosaic injunction. But even if I am wrong in these conjectures, it is, I believe, a wise and particularly relevant supposition that the media of communication available to a culture are a dominant influence on the formation of the culture's intellectual and social preoccupations." [Postman, Neil. Amusing Ourselves to Death (p. 9). Penguin Publishing Group. Kindle Edition.] Recommended reading1.    Douglas Groothuis, “Television: Agent of Truth Decay,” Truth Decay (InterVarsity, 2000).2.    Jacques Ellul, The Humiliation of the Word (Eerdmans, 1985).3.    Herman Melville, Moby Dick.4.    Kenneth Myers, All God's Children and Blue Suede Shoes: Christians and Popular Culture (Crossway, 1989).5.    Neil Postman, Amusing Ourselves to Death (Penguin, 1985)6.    Francis Schaeffer, The God Who is There (InterVarsity, 1968). The success of Islam does not argue in its favor, since might does not make right Claims of Jesus are based on historical documents close to the events described (four Gospels) Qur'an and New Testament agree that: Jesus was born of the Virgin Mary (Qur'an, Surah 3:38-48) Jesus was a messenger (Qur'an, Surah 5:75) Jesus is sinless (Qur'an, Surah 19:9) Jesus was “the Messiah” (Qur'an, Surah 4:171) Jesus was “a word from God” (Qur'an, Surah 4:171) Jesus worked miracles (Qur'an, Surah 3:49) Jesus ascended to heaven (Qur'an, Surah 4:148) Jesus will come again—Second Coming (Qur'an, Surah 43:61) Koran and New Testament disagree on whether or not Jesus claimed to be God (John 8:58; 10:30); Apostles claimed this as well (John 1:1-3; Colossians 2:9); contra: Qur'an 19:20, 24; 112:1-4 Jesus is the only Mediator between God and man (John 14:1-6; 1 Timothy 2:5; Matthew 11:27) Jesus was crucified to atone for sin against God (Luke 18:31-32); contra: Qur'an, Surah 4:157-158. Biblical and other historical evidence from the ancient world agrees that Jesus was crucified The significance of Jesus' suffering and death You see, at just the right time, when we were still powerless, Christ died for the ungodly. Very rarely will anyone die for a righteous person, though for a good person someone might possibly dare to die. But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us—Romans 5:6-8. Existential significance Mohammad gives no basis for a relationship with God; this would be “shirk”—giving Allah a partner Mohammad is not a mediator or a miracle worker, nor was he raised from the dead. He is dead. Jesus establishes a relationship with God as Lord and Savior. Jesus: Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light—Matthew 11:28-30. This episode begins our final sub-series in the relativism series, focusing in on religious relativism; a.k.a. religious pluralism. I lay out the three main forms of religious relativism and discuss the impact religious relativism has in the debate over religion. I started discussing the reasons why people are led to believe religious pluralism is true. Epistemology is a big factor. Pluralists reason that the best explanation for the vast differences in religious belief and the fact that religious beliefs tend to be geographically isolated is that religion is a human invention. Either there is no spiritual realm to be known, or it is not possible to have genuine knowledge of that realm. I argue that neither conclusion follows from the observation that religions differ from each other. Web: ThinkingtoBelieve.comEmail: ThinkingToBelieve@gmail.comFacebook: facebook.com/thinkingtobelieveTwitter & Gettr: @thinking2believParler & Truth: @ThinkingToBelieve

Is it wrong to judge? That depends on what you mean by judging. Given most people's (false) understanding of judging, it is absolutely right to judge people. In fact, it is both imperative that we do and inescapable. We must distinguish between right and wrong, good and evil. We must also engage in moral correction of those who engage in morally wrong behavior. We are simply forbidden from hypocritical judgment and from having a false sense of moral superiority. In this episode, I examine and critique both secular and religious justifications for the "don't judge" position.  Web: ThinkingtoBelieve.comEmail: ThinkingToBelieve@gmail.comFacebook: facebook.com/thinkingtobelieveTwitter & Gettr: @thinking2believParler & Truth: @ThinkingToBelieve

In this episode, Josh tells us that in order to discover truth- you must abide. We all crave the good life: success, relationships, rest. But what if the very things the world offers to bring us peace are actually a prison? Distractions, deceptive ideas, playing to disordered desires in our hearts. Keeping us from the very peace we seek. What if there was another way? A way to recognize the lies that hold us captive. Jesus said, you shall know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.

The Kingdom Perspective
Treating Truth Decay – Titus 1

The Kingdom Perspective

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 19, 2023 1:58

Transcript:Hello, this is Pastor Don of Christ Redeemer Church. Welcome to The Kingdom Perspective.Titus was a young pastor that the Apostle Paul had stationed on the First century island of Crete. Crete was a place of many challenges because of the unsavoriness of its public life. The people of Crete were known for their self-indulgence, arrogance and deception. Paul cites one of the Cretan writers who describes his own people: “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons” (Titus 1:12). It was a society marked by what we might call “truth decay”. Not tooth decay, but “truth decay”.First century Crete, you could say, was a lot like our modern America. How can a Christian operate in a society like this? Well, because of the nature and power of the Gospel, the Christian does not need the support of a surrounding society to be cheered on to greater levels of truth and justice. No. Society doesn't bring this support to the Gospel and to the church. The Gospel and the church bring this support to society. In the face of such “truth decay”, Pastor Titus is called to encourage his people to live lives marked by self-control, sensibility, love, perseverance in good works, family faithfulness, reverent speech, purity, etc. In other words, the Gospel allows us not to be thermometers of society, but thermostats—to set the temperature of social engagement, not to be set by it. We must seek to adjust the social climate, not acquiesce to it.The Gospel works this in us not so much by what it demands from us, but rather by what it did for us in Christ. It is the gospel of “Grace and peace from God” (Titus 1:4)—not what we do for Him but what He's done for us. And it is this grace that changes us, and it is this grace we are called to give to others.Something to think about from The Kingdom Perspective.Titus 1 (ESV)1 Paul, a servant of God and an apostle of Jesus Christ, for the sake of the faith of God's elect and their knowledge of the truth, which accords with godliness, 2 in hope of eternal life, which God, who never lies, promised before the ages began 3 and at the proper time manifested in his word through the preaching with which I have been entrusted by the command of God our Savior;4 To Titus, my true child in a common faith:Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.5 This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained….10 For there are many who are insubordinate, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision party. 11 They must be silenced, since they are upsetting whole families by teaching for shameful gain what they ought not to teach. 12 One of the Cretans, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” 13 This testimony is true.
