Gayati. Live. Breathe. Sing! Informal singing by Gauri Varma
I have attempted a favourite Shiv Bhajan, a beautiful version of which has been liltingly sung by Pandit Chhannulal Mishra of Banaras, based on Raag Des. The lyrics in colloquial Hindi (closest to Bhojpuri) are from Goswami Tulsidas' 'Ram Charit Maanas' and describe Shiv endearingly as the paradoxical ascetic-house holder, oblivious of social conventions, with a snake wrapped around his neck, ash-smeared semi-naked body, the bestower of blessings to all but himself, possessor of nothing. He is accompanied by his faithful spouse, Parvati, who fondly chides him for his eccentric ways.
As we approach the re-opening of the grand Ram Mandir in Ayodhya, inviting Bhagavan Sri Rama to always be with us, we also invite Sri Rama into our hearts. It was written by Goswami Tulsidas ji sometime in the 16th century as a part of Vinay Patrika. We listen to this beautiful bhajan sung by our beloved Pujya Swami Dayananda Saraswati ji and dwell on the meaning of its verses, leading to much delight and gladness. I have attempted a favourite Bhajan praising Lord Hanuman, the Shri Hanuman Lahari, composed in the 16th century by the mystic poet Goswami Tulsidas. This version was popularized by the singers Rajan and Sajan Mishra. This Stuti is replete with sentiments of Bhakti or loving devotion and extolls Hanuman who is the personification Himself of selfless devotion to Sita-Ram, endowed with strength, courage and compassion.
Hanuman Chalisa, sung by millions of Hindus worldwide is s super powerful stotra in praise of Hanuman - his glories, the ways in which he served Bhagavan Sri Rama and the blessings he gives the devotees. Authored by Goswami Tulsidas in the 16th century it is a part of the Ramacharitmanas in Avadhi language. The greatest devotee of Bhagavan Sri Rama, Hanuman blesses us with his bhakti and shakti. After you listen to this episode or next when you sing Hanuman Chalisa you will feel his presence (if you haven't already). Jai Shri Rama! In the recent controversy on Hanuman Chalisa being lesser than Vedas and Upanishads, there appears to be complete lack of understanding of Sanatana logic system. Abrahamic lens is being applied in analysing a stotra and deity. Nityananda Miśra and Sanjay Dixit discuss, applying different Sanatana perspectives.

Purchase Ramayana Unravelled: http://tiny.cc/RamayanaUnravelledPurchase Mahabharata Unravelled: http://tiny.cc/MahabharataUnravelled No epic has moved the consciousness of millions like the Ramayana. The appeal of the story of Rama is such that it has inspired the imagination of countless storytellers over the centuries, across the length and breadth of the subcontinent. From Jain poets to Bhavabhuti, from Kamban to Goswami Tulsidas, many have retold the Ramayana in their own language, infusing their own unique flavour. Though the story of Rama is much loved and well-known, questions prevail. Ramayana Unravelled attempts to address some key concerns: How did his childhood and youth shape Rama? Why did Rama agree to go on vanvas – was it only to obey his father or was there more to it? How was the relationship of Rama and Seeta? Is the Ramayana inherently misogynist, considering the characterisation of Seeta, Shurpanakha, Kaikeyi and Tara? What led to the downfall of Ravan? Ami Ganatra takes the reader through the events of the Ramayana, resolving conundrums and underlining the reasons the epic continues to be cherished to this day. "Sant Mat" can be defined as: "The Teachings ('Mat') of the Saints ('Sants') or Sages" or "Path of the Masters". In India it's common knowledge that the term "Sant Mat" was coined or adapted by Param Sant Tulsi Sahib of Hathras during the 19th-century. "Sant Mat" was adopted and popularized by Tulsi Sahib as a new name for this spiritual path or genre of mysticism, but the Sant tradition, with its many guru-lineages or branches, is a spiritual movement that dates back many centuries to ancient India. "There is no end to the number of Sants who appeared in the Yugas [Epochs] of Sat, Treta, Dvapar, and Kali [Yuga]. I sing of the celebrated one I have heard of, and bow my head to all the others." (Jan Gopal, disciple of Sant Dadu Dayal) "I have given out the same true secrets which Sants like Kabir Saheb, Dadu Saheb, Rai Das Ji, Darya Saheb, Guru Nanak, Soor Das Ji, Nabha Ji and Mira Bai have spoken of. They, too, have composed similar hymns describing the bliss of the Highest Spiritual Region, whose glory I also have sung, blessed by the grace and the dust of the holy feet of Sants." (Sant Tulsi Sahib, Book of Ghat Ramayan) "The names of some of the perfect and true Sants, Sadhs and Faqirs who manifested themselves during the past seven hundred years are Kabir Saheb, Tulsi Saheb, Jagjiwan Saheb, Garib Das, Paltu Saheb, Guru Nanak, Dadu Saheb, Tulsi Das, Nabhaji, Swami Hari Das, Sur Das and Rai Das. And some of the Muslim names are Shams Tabrez, Maulvi Rumi, Hafiz, Sarmad and Mujaddid Alif Sani. A perusal of their writings would give an idea of their spiritual attainments." (Sar Bachan Radhasoami Prose, A Summary of the Teachings of Soami Ji Maharaj) "Sacrifice to the magnificent Saints like Kabir, Nanak, Goswami Tulsidas and Tulsi Sahib, Dadu, Sundar Das, Sur Das, Swapach, Ravi Das, Jagjiwan, Paltu, etc..., They are all great benefactors, delivering human beings from the fears of the world, Satguru Devi and other Saints are also highly adorable, Maharshi Mehi sings their magnificence and lies prostrate at their sacred feet with faith and love." Sundar Kand with Hindi Meaning Part 1.mp3. Sunderkand is that chapter of Raam-charit-manas that mainly focuses on Lord Hanuman. Written by Goswami Tulsidas, the epic is considered as auspicious as reading Hanuman Chalias.
Hanuman Chalisa was composed by the great saint Goswami Tulsidas who is said to be an incarnation of Saint Valmiki. It has 40 verses praising the monkey god, Hanuman. Whoever chants Hanuman Chalisa can receive the infinite grace of Lord Hanuman. The 40 verses must be chanted for 40 days for wishes to be granted and for gaining merit. It can help control the malefic effects of Saturn transit or Saturn`s Dasa or Bhukti periods. One can get relief by chanting the Chalisa 8 times on a Saturday. People with Mangal Dosha can recite it for beneficial results. They may also gain the positive qualities of Mars, like courage, strength, indomitable spirit, and energy by doing so. It also has many other benefits like deflecting evil spirits, destroying hindrances, relieving stress, wish-fulfillment, gaining wisdom and spiritual knowledge, etc. People recite it to have a safe journey. If one wants to give up bad habits, too, it can help. It can also promote unity between people and get rid of negative energies. This discourse is in continuation of the question- Can yogis see the future? Om Swami says, that here there is no use of kundalini, chakra or yog. Here the requirement is of one-pointed steadfastness in thinking, character and mind. And the person who has achieved all this will have all the siddhis in his hands and thoughts. They then just have to think and things happen. A yogi is a person who has one-pointed focus on how to live his life and how to do his work. Om Swami says, that it is possible upto a certain extent to say what may happen or not. But, if a person says with certainty and full confidence that certain things will definitely happen or will not happen in someone's life then they are not telling the truth. He says, in actuality there is no way of proving if somebody's future can be changed or not, but we can carry a belief that it may be possible to change, not change or sometimes be changed. But to try and prove this is not possible and highly foolish. Therefore, these questions do not carry much meaning. But, if one is able to attain one pointedness in mind and consciousness and is able to fill their heart with compassion and empathy, then no siddhi is impossible for such a person. Such a person can not only see the past, present and future, but is able to bring such changes in other peoples lives that the impossible becomes possible. Om Swami says, the present moment was your future at some point and this present moment will also become your past. So the present moment is of utmost importance. We ourselves are the ones who build our future and make our destiny. He says, there is surely an element of grace and there are sentiments too, and they do have an impact but that should not absolve anyone from their responsibilities in life. Gayati. Live. Breathe. Sing! Informal singing by Gauri Varma
This beautiful bhajan was written in Awadhi (Hindi dialect of the Ayodhya area of Uttar Pradesh), by 16th century Bhakti poet and saint Goswami Tulsidas. Full of maternal love (Vaatsalya Bhaav), it adores Shri Ram in his toddler form. The Supreme Lord Vishnu, creator of the Universe, in his baby Ram Avatar, attempts to walk and stumbles and falls onto the earth. His doting mother Rani Kaushalya runs to take him in her lap and dusts the earth off him with her saree pallu. As he toddles, the anklets on his baby feet jingle and entrance everyone. The bhajan is composed in Raag Jhinjhoti and sung to the rhythm of the folk- derived Jhap Taal beat, which create a sense of swaying, perfectly suited to the lyrics and mood of this 'badhai' bhajan which is sung to celebrate birthdays in North India to this day.

This classic bhajan in Sanskrit with a mix of mediaeval Awadhi (Hindi dialect of the Ayodhya area of Uttar Pradesh) was written in praise of Lord Ram Chandra by 16th century Bhakti poet and saint Goswami Tulsidas. It describes the beauty, valour and grace of Shri Ram as a young man in his prime. The last two stanzas describe how Princess Sita prays to Goddess Bhavaani to grant her Lord Ram as her spouse, and how her inner being thrills with joy when she senses that the Devi has granted her this boon. The bhajan composition is based on Raag Yaman Kalyaan.

These sacred verses from Goswami Tulsidas' epic Ramcharitmanas are regarded as very auspicious. They describe the revelation experienced by Queen Kaushalya prior to the birth of Lord Ram. Vishnu appeared in his magnificent, all-powerful form to the Queen and conveyed to her his desire to enter her womb and be born as a human being. Unbelieving and overwhelmed initially, Kaushalya was then overjoyed and beseeched the Lord to engage in 'shishu-leela' ie. to manifest as a human baby, so that she, who longed for offspring, could be granted the unique happiness of motherhood. Everyone has experienced both happiness and suffering in life. Some of us believe that everything happening to us is our destiny, and there is little we can do about it. Whereas, others believe in free will. So which is it? If it is destiny, will consulting astrologers about the future better prepare us for adversity? If not, what can we do to better ride the motions of life? To help us answer some of these questions, Om Swami narrates an incident from the life of two saints, Goswami Tulsidas* and Baba Keenaram in this video. Peppered with humor, anecdotes, and wisdom, he shares with us his views on free will, destiny, and faith, and if we should believe in the stars or ourselves. Pearls of Wisdom to take away from this talk: 1. Believe in your own hard work instead of looking for signs in the stars 2. Learn to take responsibility for your actions in life 3. Life will have its ups and downs, be more accepting of them to reduce your suffering * Goswami Tulsidas is considered to be one of the greatest poets-saints of India and the author of the epic Ramcharitmanas (Lake of the deeds of Rama). Tulsidas (1497–1623), also known as Goswami Tulsidas, was a Ramanandi Vaishnava saint and poet, renowned for his devotion to the deity Rama. He wrote several popular works in Sanskrit and Awadhi, but is best known as the author of the epic Ramcharitmanas, a retelling of the Sanskrit Ramayana based on Rama's life in the vernacular Awadhi. Tulsidas spent most of his life in the city of Varanasi and Faizabad. The Tulsi Ghat on the Ganges River in Varanasi is named after him.
Once a man asked Goswami Tulsidas ji that which scene he liked the most out of the four- Lord Rama playing in the palace of Ayaodhya or Lord Rama breaking Shiv dhanush in Janakpuri or Lord Rama spending intimate time with His wife in Chitrakut or Lord Rama sitting at a mountain peak in Lanka. Tulsidas ji replied that the fourth scene is closest to heart. On being inquired about the reason he said that land of Ayodhya is 'Karam bhoomi' where king Dashrath performed Yagya and received Lord as his son. Land of Janankpuri signifies 'Gyaan maarg' of King Janak wherein ego (depicted by dhanush) is smashed by Lord which led to His marriage with Goddess Sita. Land of Chitrakut is filled up with 'Bhakti' being personified by Mata Sita. Tulsidas ji said that he was eligible for none of three paths but his conscience was a ready-made Lanka. So he expected that as Lord Rama forcibly entered into the premises of Ravana He would conquer his conscience also and make it free of all pervert tendencies. This is called Sharnagti (unconditional surrender)- the fourth path to reach God.
Shradha (dedication) builds up at the junction of intellect and sentiments. It is an active divine force which enables us to see God in a stone and feel the touch of a word. Dedication towards something/ somebody is reason -based and hence set reserved for a few. In Ramcharitmanas, Goswami Tulsidas ji writes that Goddess Parvati represents shradha while Lord Shiva is Vishwas (faith). We may have faith in existence of Lord but shardha lays the foundation for experiencing Him. In the context of society also, faith sustains a relation while shradha makes it pleasant. Faith is a general requirement for leading a calm life while shradha makes it precise.
Random readings from the beautiful text Sri Ram Charit Manas, in Awadhi dialect of Hindi from Ayodhya, Uttar Pradesh, India, composed about 500 years ago, by Goswami Tulsidas ji, one of my favourite poets. Sri Ram has inspired many writers, including his contemporary, about 7500 years ago, Maharshi Valmiki. He wrote Valmiki Ramayan in Sanskrit. It is one of the two 'Itihasa' texts in Indian literature. Itihas means, this is how it happened, or factual documentation. The other Itihasa text is Mahabharat or Jaygranth by Maharshi Ved Vyas ji, a contemporary of the protagonists in that text.
The question is that we have many stories in our scriptures that say that there are many demons who worship God and God has to give them boon. Why is that? Goswami Tulsidas says that nothing is impossible with devotion. The whole universe is because of this devotion. It is with tap that brahma created this universe, Vishnu sustains it and Shiva destructs it. When a devotee makes up his mind to walk on the path of devotion with persistence, the nature the universe has to give result for this devotion to the devotee. Just like if a student is not liked by a teacher but the student is an excellent student, a true teacher is bound to give him the results based on what the student has earned. The result he deserves because of his hard work and excellence. Therefore, whoever does the sadhana with the way a sadhana is done, a one who worships the way a worship is done, a one who chants they way chanting is done, a one who meditates the way meditation is done becomes the owner of the treasure of powers. The question from the audience is that in Ramcharitmanas, Goswami Tulsidas has written that you get human body after immense tapas, immense good karma, after travelling a lot through many species. If It is that rare, which scriptures have us believe then why is there still so much corruption in the world? Why are people still suffering from mental afflictions? Why do people still have urges and animalistic tendencies? If we have already gone through so much then why are we going down again? What is the reasoning behind it? Are we heading towards downfall again? There is no doubt that as human beings we have been through many different species and life forms. We have been dogs, cats and creatures of water, air and land. But, even though we are human beings, not each one of us is truly equal when it comes to consciousness. The potential of every individual may well be the same but the consciousness of every individual is a different matter altogether. There are 8.4 million species on the planet and there are 8.4 million types of consciousness people possess. Listen to this discourse by Om Swami to find out more.
