We're going to talk about issues related to our moods, our ideas, emotions, etc. The Esoteric Path is narrow, constricted, and difficult. We normally live in a world of sensory experiences, which is the Physical World. Through external sensory perceptions, we form our concepts of content, with which we reason. Reasoning and the Sensory Perceptions Thus, the reasoning we normally use is based solely on sensory assemblies. Given that these assemblies are its foundation, it is obvious that this type of reasoning is conditioned precisely by them. Reason, therefore, is subjective and hypothetical from every point of view, since it is based on the information our senses provide. And so, if we form concepts of content from these sensory perceptions, and then distribute these concepts in one way or another, they give us ordinary, formal logical reasoning. Do you really believe that this type of reasoning (based solely on external sensory perceptions) could allow us to verify reality? If the concepts of content have been developed precisely from the data provided by our physical senses, it is obvious that such concepts of content cannot transcend the mystical-sensory realm. We will now explain why ordinary reasoning is called “subjective reasoning.” What could Subjective Reasoning possibly know about Reality, about Truth, about God, about life beyond the grave, about what exists beyond the world of the senses, about what lies beyond death? Obviously, this reasoning, based solely on content concepts developed from the data provided by our physical senses, can only operate within its own limitations. It can only be processed within the realm of the mystical-sensory; it could never transcend the concepts of content through which it was formed. So, how can we reach the EXPERIENCE OF REALITY and TRUTH? There are various techniques in MEDITATION, etc., but above all, it requires possessing what is called “Faith.” Faith and Meditation lead us to Enlightenment Orthodox dogma teaches that “faith is belief in what we do not see.” This kind of Orthodox faith is not authentic faith. Faith, in itself, is a solar power. But how do we attain such power? Therein lies the problem… Is it possible to attain Faith? The Physical Senses cannot provide it; they will provide us with data with which (I repeat) we will develop our concepts of content, which are so fundamental to reasoning, up to a point! But that Solar-type Faith, the one that goes beyond simple Subjective Reasoning, the one that has such extraordinary power as to move mountains, the one that combined with Meditation leads us to Enlightenment, is not possible to obtain with the simple reports that the Physical Senses give us. Some ask for faith, they cry out for faith. It's good to pray, but as the saying goes, “Pray to God, but keep hammering away”… So, what to do? Truly, to attain faith, above all, you have to create it; faith is not something that can be achieved empirically. I repeat: YOU HAVE TO CREATE IT. And how is it created? Through STUDY and EXPERIENCE. It is obvious that through study and Direct Experience, by means of the technique of Meditation, we will come to COMPREHEND, and from that Comprehension comes, spontaneously, that which is called “Faith.” Comprehension, in itself, does not belong to the Mind; it is an exclusive property of the THIRD LOGOS, of LORD SHIVA, of BINAH (the Great Sephiroth, one of the Three Supreme Sephiroth), of the Holy Spirit… If we are experiencing through meditation, if we are studying something—some transcendental subject—if we strive to comprehend it, it is obvious that the first thing we will have is the mystical experience (as a result of study and meditation); then comes comprehension, that spark of light given to us by the Third Logos. He comes to our aid to give us comprehension, and from such comprehension comes faith. Comprehension (I repeat, so that I am clearly understood) is based on the Third Logos, and from this comprehension comes Faith. Therefore, if Comprehension is based on the Third Logos and from this comprehension comes Faith, then obviously the very root of Faith is in the Third Logos, that is, in the Holy Spirit. The many Degrees on the Path of Initiation But in acquiring faith, there are degrees and degrees, scales and scales, systems and systems. Obviously, my dear brothers, when I refer to “systems and systems,” I am referring to hierarchical matters: Solar Systems, Worlds, Universes, Atomic Systems, etc. As for the practical means or system for achieving faith, it is none other than the one I have already mentioned… I emphasize the idea that there are degrees and degrees, because knowledge is multiple, multifaceted. For example: Suppose we are ignorant of the Law of Eternal Return; we are informed, but we know nothing. What should we do? How can we come to have faith in this Law? We must first study the Doctrine of the Eternal Return of all things. Through intellectual understanding, we will come to know that the stars return to their starting point after many years; that the atoms within the molecule always return to their original starting point; that the Sun has an elliptical orbit, returning south and then north each year… Through this understanding, we will be able to know that days and nights, seasons, and ages return… We will also learn, through this information, that the Law of Eternal Return allows us to come back, to be reborn, to have a new body after we have lost the one we have. That much is obvious, but that's where it ends! We need something more: We need to REMEMBER OUR PAST LIVES, that's obvious. As long as we don't have the memory of our previous lives, we can't say we know, no! We'll have the theory accumulated in the mind, but that's not true KNOWLEDGE. So, what should we do? First of all, we need to investigate; there are systems for remembering past lives. Gautama, the Buddha, taught the method of RETROSPECTION, and it is wonderful. But how could we come to have faith, for example, in the method taught by Gautama the Buddha? There is only one way. How? First, study; second, practice. From study and practice comes understanding; then, as a result, faith arises; and with faith, we will successfully practice the retrospective exercise. The Practice The exercise is easy and simple: Begin lying in bed, with your body relaxed. You must remember, concentrate on the last events of the day, the ones before that, the ones before that; and thus, in retrospect, recall, relive all the incidents of the day. We will then proceed with the incidents of the previous day, also in retrospect. Then we will continue trying to remember what we did on the day before last; and so, with that process, we will try to remember the last 15 days of our life, the penultimate 15 days, everything we did in the past month and the month before last, and what we did in a year and in 10 and in 20 years. We will strive to remember all the events of life, always in retrospect. When we reach the first five years of childhood, the problem arises: How can we remember the events of our lives when we were four, three, two, one years old? How? We have no choice but to COMBINE MEDITATION WITH SLEEP: In moments when we feel predisposed to sleep, we will practice the exercise, trying to meticulously recall all the incidents of our lives when we were four, three, two, one… The memories will emerge in flashes, like lightning, like bursts of light, etc… Those first flashes (memories of early childhood) resulting, first, from having known the practice, the study; second, from having practiced the retrospective exercise, those memories or those flashes, those visions, let's say, of a lightning-like type, will give us Faith in the exercise (a Solar-type Faith), and the more we remember the occurrences of early childhood, the more Faith will increase. And when we have remembered our entire life, up to the very moment of birth, then we can make the leap to the last moment (to the last moment of the previous life). If we can remember it, if we can picture ourselves surrounded by our family in our final moments, then our faith will be rekindled, it will be even stronger. We will say: “What an extraordinary exercise, I am happy with this practice!” And as we continue our retrospective exercise, we will recall the final years of our past existence, the penultimate years, the years before the penultimate, our youth, our adolescence, our childhood, the moment we were born in our past existence. When we achieve this, we will possess an unwavering, solar-type Faith, unshakeable. Someone might come and tell us that “this exercise is useless,” and we would laugh at them. The greatest reasoner might come and try to destroy us, and we would laugh at them (we would be sustained by Faith, the product of STUDY and EXPERIENCE). Then we would say, “I know the Law of the Eternal Return of all things,” but we would no longer say it in a merely empirical, intellectual, or reasoned way; rather, we would speak it with firsthand knowledge. We could say, “I have returned, and here I am!”; and we would speak it with such certainty that we would move many. Thus, we would have acquired Faith through the retrospective exercise. This procedure, taught by Gautama Buddha Shakyamuni, allows us to remember all our previous existences; it is a marvelous exercise. But it is one thing for you to hear a statement, an explanation, and another thing entirely to put it into practice. When you hear the discourse on such an exercise, you receive INFORMATION; you are, in fact, STUDYING. But when you practice, you are PRACTICING; and from study and practice comes comprehension; and as a result of comprehension, Faith. This comprehension is given to us by the Third Logos; and it is Faith, the definitive result of experience, verification, and comprehension. So, brothers, there is no other way to have Faith. But if you manage to develop, for example, Faith in retrospect, Faith in the Law of the Eternal Return of all things (based on study, experience, and comprehension), it does not mean, for that reason, that you have, for example, COMPLETE FAITH in other matters, such as the existence of Atlantis. You may have heard that Atlantis existed, but you have no proof of it; you receive it as news, you may accept it, but you have no real proof of it. IMAGINATION and WILL So, to find out if Atlantis existed, you would first need to verify that information by studying where Atlantis was located. That it was in the Atlantic Ocean, fine! What physical evidence, what data is there, what are its legends, traditions, etc.? Once we have all that data, then we need to verify it. How will we verify it? Through the technique of meditation. We will have to lie down in our bed (preferably with our head facing North), our body completely relaxed, our eyes closed, at a moment when we feel predisposed to sleep, and we must concentrate intently on Atlantis, combining IMAGINATION and WILL in vibrant harmony. Let us remember that Imagination is feminine; it is worth mentioning that Will is masculine, and that in the combination of these two polarities lies the key to all Power. Therefore, we must not underestimate the Imagination; there is a very marked tendency to underestimate the Imagination. Some say: “Those are things of the Imagination, I accept them because…, or it's a thing of my Imagination,” that is, they do not know how to appreciate the value of the Imagination. Distinguish between INTENTIONAL IMAGINATION and MECHANICAL IMAGINATION. Intentional Imagination is the “TRANSLUCENT” that allows us to see the great realities of the Inner Worlds. Mechanical Imagination is FANTASY; it is formed from the detritus of memory. Let us, therefore, distinguish between IMAGINATION and FANTASY. To underestimate Imagination is absurd. Therefore, we must develop our imagination, cultivate it… If we concentrate properly (I repeat) on Atlantis, with relaxed bodies, vividly imagining the Atlantean continent; if we unite Will and Imagination in vibrant harmony (wanting to see Atlantis); if we practice daily, imagining it there in the Atlantic Ocean, seeing a group of marvelous islands, among them Poseidon's island with its seven solid gold gates, etc.; if we truly practice, what will happen? That one day, we will see Atlantis… Obviously, there are three phases in Initiatic Knowledge: 1. IMAGINATION 2. INSPIRATION 3. INTUITION Imagination, Inspiration, and Intuition are the three obligatory paths of Initiation. We will vividly imagine the Atlantean Continent, just as it was there, situated in the ocean that bears its name (the walled cities, etc.) And our Will will be “TO WANT TO SEE”, and our Imagination will be TO WAIT, TO BE IN A RECEPTIVE STATE, to see what comes to the Imagination. One day, among many others, glimpses of Atlantis will begin to reach our imagination, and the images of that ancient continent will grow ever more vivid. We will see its inhabitants, its cities, and if we are persistent in this practice, the day will come when we will be able to see the Atlantean continent perfectly, in its entirety. These glimpses will give us faith, but that faith will increase when we move on to the second aspect, which is called “inspiration.” Being inspired, we will feel within ourselves what Atlantis was like; we will know of its life and its tragedies. A third level will lead us to INTUITION. And then, through Intuition, we will not only be able to see clairvoyantly and come to feel the vivid emotions of the people, etc., of the Atlantean Continent, but we will also be able to study, in its entirety, the life of that continent, of that humanity, in the very Sealed Archives of Nature, in the AKASHIC RECORDS. When that happens, we will have much more Faith. Then we see how Faith is susceptible to development. Someone can have faith in one thing and not in another. Whoever wants to have faith in everything will have to study deeply and experience, and then, as a result of study and direct experience, comes comprehension, and as a consequence or corollary of such comprehension, comes faith which (as I already told you) obviously has its roots in the same Third Logos. This episode originally aired in 2025 and, as one of our most-loved conversations, we're sharing it again with you today."Before you speak, ask yourself: “Is it honest? Is it kind? Is it necessary? Is it the right time? Does it improve the silence?” - Sathya Sai Baba  Today, Erin and Sasha explore the 5th Chakra of speech, poetically named Vishuddha, meaning “purification of poison.” Vishuddha Chakra represents the Ether element, and the ability to turn poison into nectar - the process of purification. It is located in the throat, and is the seat of the power of the word. It brings Prana to the respiratory system.   “The more silence behind your word, the greater the impact.” You may find, upon personal practice, that the simple elegance of Silence can be prescribed to most internal challenges. This chakra represents the quality of honest communication, turning ignorance into awareness, transmutation, choice, alchemy, infinity, receptivity, sensitivity, self-expression, “finding one's voice,” the ability to speak from the heart, and the ability to listen from the heart. Used properly, Vishuddha makes our words nectar, not poison. All poison becomes nectar when Vishuddha is strong and stable, developed and activated.   Our words create reality, and since they originate from thought, our thoughts create our reality. Therefore, words are not only descriptive, but creative. When Vishuddha is activated, everywhere you go, becomes better as a result of you being there. If too much noise is there, too much talking or too much thinking, Vishuddha cannot be stabilized, because the element it represents is Ether (spaciousness, emptiness).   The bija mantra for Vishuddha is “Hum,” which means “I am.” Because on a micro-level, we are God: the creator, preserver, and destroyer. Which brings me to the story of Samudra Manthan, the churning of the ocean. Once upon a time, the devas (gods) and asuras (demons) were on a quest to retrieve Amrita, the sacred nectar of immortality. In doing so, they had to churn the ocean using Mount Mandara as the churning rod, and Vasuki (the serpent King) as their rope. As they churned in what appears to be the original tug of war, Divine gifts emerged, like Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and the celestial cow Kamadhenu. However, before the Amrita appeared, a deadly poison called Halahala surfaced, threatening to destroy all of existence. Terrified, the devas and asuras turned to Lord Shiva for help, and in an act of supreme selflessness, he took the poison to his mouth to prevent it from harming creation. But instead of swallowing it or spitting it out, he held it in his throat, where it turned his skin blue, earning him the name of Neelkantha (the Blue throated one).   This moment of holding and transforming toxicity without allowing it to spread, is the symbolic origin of the Vishuddha Chakra. Just as Lord Shiva purified the deadly poison without letting it harm him, Vishuddha governs the purification of thought, word, and energy. Shiva's restraint symbolizes conscious speech, wisdom, and the power of truth.   The throat chakra teaches that life contains both poison (negativity, challenges) and nectar (divine wisdom). It is our ability to process, hold, and transmute energy that determines our spiritual growth. This chakra represents self-mastery, communication, and purification. Like Shiva, we must learn to hold challenges with grace, not letting toxicity consume us but instead transforming it into wisdom. In this video we will be talking about how to let go correctly from the tantric philosophy of lord Shiva. In Hindu mythology, there is an idea that sometimes the universe becomes too full. Over time it gathers the weight of billions of human desires, habits, and egos. People cling to things that should have ended long ago, and old systems keep running long after they stop working. Slowly, everything becomes heavy and rigid—until nothing new can grow, because nothing old is allowed to disappear.When things reach that point, mythology says that Shiva begins the Tandava, his cosmic dance. This dance shakes the entire universe. Stars fall from the sky. Oceans rise and swallow the land. Mountains crumble. Cities vanish. Everything that once looked permanent breaks apart and returns to the dark, formless space from which it came.From the outside, it sounds like the end  of the world. Total destruction. But in the myth, it's a reset. A clearing of space so that life can begin again.Hindu tradition explains the universe through three major forces, known as the Trimurti. First there is Brahma, the creator, who brings things into existence. Then there is Vishnu, the preserver, who keeps the world stable and running. And finally, there is Shiva, the one responsible for ending things. A song ends in silence. A breath is followed by an exhale. In the same way, every phase of life has to end before another one can begin. Think about what would happen if nothing ever finished. Srimad Bhagavatam [Bhagwat Katha] – Part 23 | Swami Mukundananda  Swamiji narrates the divine episode of Shree Ram and Sita's marriage, which conveys the timeless lesson that humility triumphs over pride. This episode unfolds the divine legend of the sacred River Godavari — a story of devotion, jealousy, and redemption. Sage Gautama and his wife Vaheliya lived a life of virtue, blessed by the gods with an ever-flowing well. But when jealousy took root in the hearts of other sages, Lord Ganesha tested Gautama's purity through the guise of a divine cow. Struck by guilt after the cow's death, Gautama sought forgiveness through deep penance to Lord Shiva. Moved by his devotion, Lord Shiva released the celestial River Ganga through his matted hair — giving birth to the sacred River Godavari, the river of compassion and cleansing.Listen to this mythic tale that flows with faith, penance, and divine grace.

So he (Lord Brahmā) says, "jñāne prayāsam udapāsya namanta eva jīvanti san-mukharitāṁ bhavadīya-vārtām." Jīvanti means "to live"—if all you do is somehow or other stay alive. Jīvanti san-mukharitāṁ, just so you can attend the Bhāgavatam class, that's all you do. What do you do? Just try to stay alive all day long so the next day I can go to the Bhāgavatam class. That's all you do. "Yeah, that's all I do." Brahma says, "That's alright, jīvanti san-mukharitāṁ bhavadīya-vārtām," because by doing that—in whatever position you're in now—you don't have to change anything. It'll change from the inside out. "Sthāne sthitaḥ śruti-gataṁ tanu-vāṅ-manobhiḥ," because if that's your dedication, just to hear about Krishna, then ajita—jito—the unconquerable Ajita, becomes conquered by that person, praṇaya-rasanayā. They begin to love Kṛṣṇa so much just by hearing about him. That was the case with Rukmiṇī Devī. She never saw Kṛṣṇa, but she wrote this letter, "yasyāṅghri-paṅkaja-rajaḥ-snapanaṁ mahānto vāñchanty umā-patir ivātma-tamo-'pahatyai yarhy ambujākṣa na labheya bhavat-prasādaṁ jahyām asūn vrata-kṛśān śata-janmabhiḥ syāt" (SB 10.52.43) She never met Kṛṣṇa, but she heard about him in the court of her father. She's a princess, so they were talking about Kṛṣṇa. It's said the more she heard about it, it was like, "That's who I'm going to marry. I'm going to marry him." And she was so determined that she wrote this note to Kṛṣṇa and sent it to him. It was like, "Look, you marry me, or I'm going to kill myself through austerities." That's what this verse says. "Yasyāṅghri-rajaḥ-snapanaṁ mahanto" says, "Great souls like Lord Shiva, they purify themselves by taking the dust of Your lotus feet and putting them on their heads." She said, "If I cannot attain your mercy, I'm going to perform such severe austerities that I'll be forced to give up my life. And then maybe, after many lifetimes of doing this, you'll give me your mercy and marry me." All she did was hear about it. And then the wives of the brāhmaṇas—all they did was hear about Kṛṣṇa from the marketplace. They went to the weekend market. What's that called? A farmers' market. They went to the farmers' market, and they were buying ingredients to assist their husbands in these yajñas. And there were some residents of Vṛndāvan there, and they were like, "Kṛṣṇa, this... Kṛṣṇa, that..."—Kṛṣṇa-kathā going on in the marketplace. They heard it. They overheard it. They discussed it. They fell in love with Kṛṣṇa, so much so that they're exalted way above their husbands. It's way above this so-called Brāhmaṇism, performing yajnas. Lord Śiva is described in this verse as the chief of all thinkers. Lord Śiva, of course, does not engage in useless mental speculation, but as stated in the previous verse, he is always thoughtful regarding how to deliver the demons from their fallen condition of life. It is said that during the advent of Lord Caitanya, Sadāśiva appeared as Advaita Prabhu, and Advaita Prabhu's chief concern was to elevate the fallen conditioned souls to the platform of devotional service to Lord Kṛṣṇa. Since people were engaged in useless occupations which would continue their material existence, Lord Śiva, in the form of Lord Advaita, appealed to the Supreme Lord to appear as Lord Caitanya to deliver these illusioned souls. Actually Lord Caitanya appeared on the request of Lord Advaita. Similarly, Lord Śiva has a sampradāya, the Rudra sampradāya. He is always thinking about the deliverance of the fallen souls, as exhibited by Lord Advaita Prabhu. Once, long ago, there lived the Asura Dharuka, whose cruelty tormented both devas and humans. To end his tyranny, Lord Paramashiva sent forth his daughter, the fierce Goddess Bhadrakali, to destroy him. Bhadrakali fought bravely and slew Dharuka.But his wife, the beautiful Manodari, could not bear the loss. Grief-stricken, she turned to Paramashiva himself and performed deep tapas. Moved by her devotion, Paramashiva granted her a few drops of his divine sweat, telling her that with this she could wield a power over people.On her way back, still burning with anger, Manodari encountered Bhadrakali, who was returning victorious after killing Dharuka. In her fury, she sprinkled the sweat on Bhadrakali, and instantly, the goddess was struck with the affliction of smallpox.Bhadrakali fell on the path to Kailasa, her body covered in blisters. Alarmed, the Bhooth Ganas rushed to Lord Shiva. From his power, he created Khandakarna, who came and licked the goddess's body, cleansing her of the disease—yet Bhadrakali chose to keep the marks of smallpox on her face as her ornament, a symbol of her fierce beauty.But she had not forgotten Manodari's deed. In her wrath, Bhadrakali cut away Manodari's eyes, ears, and legs. She then transformed her into Vasuri Mala Bhagavathi, binding her forever as one of her Bhooth Ganas. From then on, it was believed that Vasuri Mala carried the power of smallpox, a goddess both feared and worshipped, who reminds us of divine justice and the dangers of arrogance and revenge

And now, our main project is to study Somānanda's radical non-dual philosophy, which is the foundation for Shākta non-duality. Somānanda might be one of the most radical and God-intoxicated of the Shaiva Non-Dual masters. He is Abhinava Gupta's guru's guru's guru. Essentially, the idea here is that nothing is insentient: every thing, even seemingly inanimate objects, are actually none other than Shiva, who is pure non-dual Consciousness reposing blissfully in His own fullness endowed with unceasing powers of Willing, Knowing and Doing. Somānanda argues that every pot, every wall, every chair wills to be what it is and knows that it is that thing and acts as that thing all as an expression of Shiva's desire to play! And what's more? Recently, we've been reflecting a lot on Is There Free Will? and also How To Really Worship Kālī | Free Will vs Determinism to explain Sri Ramakrishna's very subtle position on the issue: God alone is the Doer ("not even a leaf moves but by the will of God") and yet there arises in us by God's will the "feeling" of free will which makes our decisions meaningful! But ultimately, we realize (a) God only has been doing everything and playing all the roles (absolute determinism on the level of the individual) but also(b) you are God (absolute free-will and voluntarism on the level of the true identity) But while the "free will vs determinism" discussion is a supremely important theme in our personal spiritual lives, another equally important and very related theme is that of "self-effort vs grace"! In this talk, we explain why(a) grace is the only factor in spiritual life and (b) grace can never be caused by anything since that would contradict God's freedom of which grace is an expression and yet (c) we should still do intense spiritual practices anyway since c.i. the very fact that we want to do spiritual practices (and that we have a guru to show us how) is itself a function of grace andc.ii. spiritual practices are worth doing in and of themselves, just for fun and without any desire for outcome! Of course, since we gave this talk as part of our Paramārthasāra of Abhinava Gupta series (which meets on zoom every Friday at 11am PST via the house link here), we use three verses from our text to substantiate our claims on grace:आदर्शे मलरहिते यद्वद्वदनं विभाति तद्वदयम्।शिवशक्तिपातविमले धीतत्त्वे भाति भारूपः॥९॥Just like a face  shines in a mirror free of impurities, exactly like this, this Shining One (śiva/Self) shines resplendently in that intellect which has been made spotless by Lord Shiva's grace.परमं यत् स्वातन्त्र्यं दुर्घटसम्पादनं महेशस्य।देवी मायाशक्तिः स्वात्मावरणं शिवस्यैतत्॥१५॥The Goddess Māyāśakti is the Supreme Freedom of the Great Lord  to accomplish (sampādanam) that which is impossible/inconceivable (durghata): the covering (āvarana) of his very own self (svātma).एकस्मिन्घटगगने रजसा व्याप्ते भवन्ति नान्यानि।मलिनानि तद्वदेते जीवाः सुखदुःखभेदजुषः॥३७॥If the space within one pot is filled with dust, the space within other pots is not stained. In this talk, we discuss the Matangī meditation mantra and present a simple worship of Matangi since the day before yesterday was her Jayanti (birthday).We were all of us recovering from our Atlanta adventure so I didn't get to write to you yesterday and wish you all a happy Akshaya Trititya; you were all in my heart!Akshaya Trititya is such an auspicious day combining so many important events that I think I'll say a few things about it in class today also before our practice.On this day:1. The day the first naga sadhu, Rishabha was fed2. Treta Yuga began3. Parashurama, the axe-wielding, angry avatar of Vishnu was born4. Ganga Mā first flowed down from heaven5. Shiva appointed Kubera the ruler of material prosperity6. Vyāsa begin composing the Mahabharata (with Ganesh taking dictation)7. Yudishtira received the Infinite Bowl (Akshaya patra)8. Recently, we've been asking the question How To Practice Tantra Safely and we proposed that the historical progression of ideas in Shaivism presents a kind of graded syllabus where the traditions that come earlier (like the Vedas and the Shaiva Siddhanta etc.) act as firm foundations for the traditions that emerge later, like the transgressive, non-dual Goddess-oriented traditions (Kaula etc.). Abhinava Gupta presents us with a kind of hierarchy for the various schools in Tantrāloka 29.51:1. Veda (Smārta and Śrauta)2. Vaishnava Tantra (Pañcarātra)3. Pashupāta systems (Lakulīśan etc.)4. Siddhānta5. Vāma 6. Dakshina7. Mata8. Kula9. Kaula10. Trika (kulāt parataram trika)Of course, the fact that he distinguishes "Kula" from "Kaula" is worth noting and perhaps worth discussing in depth on another occasion. In what sense the Trika is the "highest" is also worth questioning. In a sense. the Veda and Siddhānta might be the most important since they are the most foundational and yet in another sense, the Kaula and Trika might be the "best" because they are the most refined, specialized revelations of Lord Shiva for the most advanced practitioners. In any case, the world of Tantra, both Hindu and Buddhist is full of "doxographical hierarchies" like this where other schools are accepted as true and good but only insofar as they can lead to "my" school which necessarily I will position as the greatest. We find this strategy also in the Tibetan Tantra masterpiece "Progressive Stages of Meditation on Emptiness" by Khenpo Tsultrim Gyamtso Rinpoche where the various Buddhist schools are presented in a hierarchy. This approach is called "religious inclusivism" and it is certainly better than "religious exclusivism" which says "my path alone is right and other paths are wrong!." In this video, I argue for a third approach as exemplified by Sri Ramakrishna: "all paths are equally, non-hierarchically good as many aspects of the Infinitely Varied One!" We have a big week energetically coming up ahead with two significant things happening. First of all it's Shivaratri, Shivratri is a Hindu festival honouring Shiva, an Indian deity, celebrated with fasting, prayers, and night-long vigils to seek his blessings for transformation, inner peace, and spiritual growth and we have the Pisces New Moon. So what does this actually mean for you? I'm going to translate this energy for you as a practical guide to the week. What is Shivaratri and what's it got to do with The Tower in Tarot? For those listening to where I'm based in Sydney, Australia, Shivaratri takes place Wednesday February 26th 2025 4:38pm to Thursday 27th February 2025 2:24pm. Shivaratri means Great Night of Shiva. Shiva is the Hindu God that represents destruction which says a lot about the energy that is taking place this week. This time last year I was blessed enough to be in India during Shivaratri and it truly activated a of necessary destruction in my life including within my previous relationship and living situation - the cracks, what was not working really started to show leading to the ultimate demise 6 months later. Cyclical truly! Now this is not something to be scared of but aware think of it like when you see the tower card pop out when doing tarot (more on that later). I know you know, who hasn't seen that card and put it back in to reshuffle or have fear and wish you didn't pull cards haha I certainly have an am really practicing this year not to jump to conclusions with the cards I see coming out. Who is Lord Shiva? Shiva the deity In India at one point there was a celebration or significant spiritual moment everyday because I guess they wanted to celebrate every day of life and the different purposes of life which is a fun fact. Nowadays truly it Shivaratri is one of the most significant events in India's spiritual calendar. In Hindu tradition, Lord Shiva represents destruction and renewal—the force that clears away the old to make way for the new. He is often depicted as sitting in deep meditation, symbolising inner peace and awareness. Shiva's Origin Story Shiva's origin story is vast, layered, and deeply symbolic, woven into Hindu mythology as a representation of transformation, destruction, and divine stillness. He is known as the supreme yogi, the lord of time, and the force that dissolves what is no longer needed so that new creation can emerge. Unlike other deities, who are often depicted in palaces or adorned with riches, Shiva is an ascetic who meditates in the mountains, covered in ashes, with matted hair and a third eye that sees beyond illusion.

"Before you speak, ask yourself: “Is it honest? Is it kind? Is it necessary? Is it the right time? Does it improve the silence?” - Sathya Sai BabaToday, Erin and Sasha explore the 5th Chakra of speech, poetically named Vishuddha, meaning “purification of poison.” Vishuddha Chakra represents the Ether element, and the ability to turn poison into nectar - the process of purification. It is located in the throat, and is the seat of the power of the word. It brings Prana to the respiratory system. “The more silence behind your word, the greater the impact.” You may find, upon personal practice, that the simple elegance of Silence can be prescribed to most internal challenges. This chakra represents the quality of honest communication, turning ignorance into awareness, transmutation, choice, alchemy, infinity, receptivity, sensitivity, self-expression, “finding one's voice,” the ability to speak from the heart, and the ability to listen from the heart. Used properly, Vishuddha makes our words nectar, not poison. All poison becomes nectar when Vishuddha is strong and stable, developed and activated. Our words create reality, and since they originate from thought, our thoughts create our reality. Therefore, words are not only descriptive, but creative. When Vishuddha is activated, everywhere you go, becomes better as a result of you being there. If too much noise is there, too much talking or too much thinking, Vishuddha cannot be stabilized, because the element it represents is Ether (spaciousness, emptiness). The bija mantra for Vishuddha is “Hum,” which means “I am.” Because on a micro-level, we are God: the creator, preserver, and destroyer. Which brings me to the story of Samudra Manthan, the churning of the ocean. Once upon a time, the devas (gods) and asuras (demons) were on a quest to retrieve Amrita, the sacred nectar of immortality. In doing so, they had to churn the ocean using Mount Mandara as the churning rod, and Vasuki (the serpent King) as their rope. As they churned in what appears to be the original tug of war, Divine gifts emerged, like Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth, and the celestial cow Kamadhenu. However, before the Amrita appeared, a deadly poison called Halahala surfaced, threatening to destroy all of existence. Terrified, the devas and asuras turned to Lord Shiva for help, and in an act of supreme selflessness, he took the poison to his mouth to prevent it from harming creation. But instead of swallowing it or spitting it out, he held it in his throat, where it turned his skin blue, earning him the name of Neelkantha (the Blue throated one). This moment of holding and transforming toxicity without allowing it to spread, is the symbolic origin of the Vishuddha Chakra. Just as Lord Shiva purified the deadly poison without letting it harm him, Vishuddha governs the purification of thought, word, and energy. Shiva's restraint symbolizes conscious speech, wisdom, and the power of truth. The throat chakra teaches that life contains both poison (negativity, challenges) and nectar (divine wisdom). It is our ability to process, hold, and transmute energy that determines our spiritual growth. This chakra represents self-mastery, communication, and purification. Like Shiva, we must learn to hold challenges with grace, not letting toxicity consume us but instead transforming it into wisdom.
