The idea here in our Yātrā is to be one-minded, purposeful, and to put aside anything else. Vyavasāyātmikā buddhi—to be very focused just on the task at hand. After all, we only get a certain number of days, hours, and minutes in a week; and generally, if we calculate how many we actually have that are usable in Kṛṣṇa service, it comes down to just a few. So, we can have a Khaṭvāṅga moment here to think: 'short lifetime, great opportunity, let's take full advantage of it. Moving troops is the hardest part of a Yātrā because this world is called Durgā, which means durga-gati—difficult to go. Vṛndāvana adds an extra challenge because roads and infrastructure, in general, are the same as they ever were, but the number of cars and people has increased exponentially over time due to Śrīla Prabhupāda introducing Vṛndāvana to the world. So, we just have to be patient. This transcendental body is the playground for the continuous expression of variegated moods and ecstatic symptoms, that carry His consciousness to the realm where He is no longer aware of that transcendental body. By only a particle of His mercy he has delivered the three worlds. 2) I salute the Son of Mother Saci, Whose heart is in a state of rapture, transformed by feelings of intense love. In His pastime of loud roaring, before the mischievous and malicious rascals, He removes all fear of the vast ocean of material existence, by the effect of His unlimited compassion. 3) He is wearing garments the color of the eastern sky during the dawn, and His lovely cheeks shine with the same radiance. The nails of His hands and feet have the same pleasing effect of the moon, shining in the sky. His pleasure diversion consists in discussions and glorification of His own wonderful qualities and names. I offer my obeisances to the Son of Mother Saci. 4) His lotus eyes are always wet with tears. His ornaments are the new and ever fresh transformations of ecstatic love that decorate His transcendental form. His gait is slow and majestic, yet His dancing is a wonderful pastime of enjoyment. I bow down before the Son of Mother Saci. 5) The movement of His lovely, yet restless, lotus feet captivates the mind, and His ankle bracelets sweeten that charming scene all the more. His face, which defeats the beauty of the moon, is very cooling and pleasant. I offer my salutations to the Son of Mother Saci. 6) He wears a cord around His waist and carries in His hands a water pot and staff. His divine appearance is complemented by His shaved head. The sins of the wicked are annulled by the rod of chastisement that he carries. I salute the Son of Mother Saci. 7) His ornaments are the dust on His body and His radiant tilak, prepared with sandalwood. The beautiful sight of His trembling reddish lips brings delight to the mind and heart. I offer my obeisances to the Son of Mother Saci. 8) His lotus eyes defeat the color of pink lotuses. His two lotus hands are very long, reaching down almost to His knees. He appears to be a mere adolescent, dressed as He is, ready to dance. I prostrate myself before the Son of Mother Saci.

To put on a yajña takes a lot of work—any kind of yajña—and to take it down takes a lot of work. The middle portion is often very short. Again, in a fire yajña, there's only a few spoon fulls that go in, but getting all the ingredients (especially if you have to grow them yourself) and then cleaning up afterwards is the heavy lifting. But the combustion—spiritual combustion—happens in the middle, and this is one of the five most important practices according to Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu. I feel like we had that combustion because of the hard work of Śraddhā Devī Dāsī ,team members, and Divyanāma Prabhu—working, all of them, constantly. I'm in on weekly meetings for planning, and then I hear Śraddhā with her team. I see Divyanāma Prabhu constantly planning also for his team. And this is a confluence of different teams coming together; it's just been really nice. I hear Nirākulā in the other room on meetings, and the detail that Śraddhā goes into to plan these is astounding to me, and many of you mentioned those types of things. I don't know if you could hear out there, Śraddhā, but a lot of people were appreciating that you had a motherly presence and you were attentive to every detail. Really, it's your tenacity and your very deep devotion that shows up in the way that you lean into your service completely. I couldn't be more grateful, and all of us feel that way too. So thank you very, very much for giving such sacrifice so that we can achieve this yajña that is irreplaceable in our lives, in our sojourn, in our journey back to Godhead. Thank you very much. Divyanāma Prabhu, Vṛndārikā Ramāi, and their team—they have dedicated their lives, or a good portion of them, to putting on Yātrās. And just in the way things have come together over the years, we have now three Yātrās a year. They've just evolved. But they didn't just evolve, just like the material world and all the species didn't just evolve—there's an intelligence behind it. Divyanāma and Vṛndārikā Ramāi are attached to the dhāma. They have spent a lot of time in the dhāma, and it was good fortune that they ran into Mukhāravinda in the Istanbul airport distributing books one day. Believe it or not, they were in transit, and that's—without all the details—how we met. Then one thing led to another, with a ride from their house to the airport about starting the Youth Yātrā. I had always wanted to do it; didn't know how it would ever happen, but then Kṛṣṇa sent them and they said, ‘We'll do it.' Now there's been a merging of Yātrās, and we have added on in October to the wonderful UK devotees coming together, and I get to spend time going around with that other Yātrā, and now these Yātrās are coming together. Kṛṣṇa has definitely got a plan, and we're really grateful to you and Vṛndārikā Ramāi. Thank you very much for the tireless service you do. Back at ISV years ago, we used to have Devotee Appreciation Day, and we would come together once a year, I think, to try to appreciate the devotees. Every time driving home, I would look at Nirākulā and say, ‘Why am I so exhausted?' It was really hard, because we all have this feeling—I'm hearing it from everyone—you want to try to mention everybody. It's like seeing all the preparations that were just offered to Lord Jagannātha and then thinking you can eat them all. It's impossible to glorify the devotees enough or appreciate them enough. And I always walked away feeling like, ‘Oh, I could have done more.' And that's exactly how I feel now—for all of you, that we came together to render service and create this environment. It's a miracle. It's a spiritual miracle that will be imprinted in our hearts forever.

May the Supreme Lord who is known as the son of Śrīmatī Śacī-devī be transcendentally situated in the innermost chambers of your heart. I've collated quotes from Prabhupāda and found that specifically when it comes to quotes relevant to japa, they are not unlimited quotes, so I've chosen four. I read one to you yesterday, and today's quote is as follows. Prabhupāda wrote this in 1969, so you can appreciate the fact that during this time, devotees had been active for a couple of years—two or three years. Prabhupāda started in 1965, then 1966, '67, '68, '69... Devotees were just getting started. They had lots of questions about how to chant japa. One of them, to begin with, was how we're going to do 64 rounds, and then how are we going to do 32, and how are we going to do 16. Prabhupāda gives the following in a letter: "Regarding your last question about the ecstatic symptoms of chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa, you should know that the Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra has an equal effect upon all devotees, just like the sunshine has an equal effect on everyone. But when it is covered, the sunshine has a different effect. Similarly, the influence of the Hare Kṛṣṇa mantra becomes manifest when one is no longer covered by the ten offenses to chanting. The more we become free from the ten offenses, the more the effect of chanting becomes manifested through us. Everyone can become a great devotee, being freed from the offenses100% simply by one's determination and effort." The word "determination" has the word "terminus" in it, which means an ending point. One can take it that determination means you finish what you started. And that means when you start a mantra, hear it all the way through—not just the "Hare Kṛṣṇa" part, but also the "Hare Rāma" part. If you stay in the mood of finishing—finish the mantra, finish hearing it, and then finish your rounds—you'll be considered determined. "Effort" means that we're not dead stones. We're responsible for wherever we are now and for wherever we're going to be in the future, because we know the science: where attention goes, energy flows. Therefore, if we're careful and vigilant, then we'll be progressive in our march back to Godhead. O Projeto de Lei nº 004/2026, encaminhado pelo Executivo Municipal, foi um dos temas que mais gerou debate na sessão da Câmara de Vereadores de Orleans realizada nesta semana. A proposta trata da distribuição de um incentivo financeiro do Ministério da Saúde voltado ao fortalecimento da atenção primária. Pelo projeto, o recurso seria dividido entre os servidores das unidades básicas de saúde, com um adicional de 20% para enfermeiros que exercem a função de coordenação das unidades, devido às responsabilidades administrativas e de gestão. A matéria dividiu opiniões entre vereadores, profissionais da saúde e representantes sindicais. Durante a sessão, a vereadora Maiara Dal Ponte Martins (MDB), que também atua como enfermeira, defendeu a proposta, afirmando que o incentivo está ligado ao cumprimento de metas e indicadores da atenção primária. Segundo ela, o valor pode chegar a cerca de R$ 453 para os servidores, enquanto os enfermeiros coordenadores receberiam aproximadamente R$ 100 a mais. A discussão ganhou novos desdobramentos após enfermeiros da atenção básica divulgarem uma carta aberta à população, lida durante a sessão. No documento, os profissionais criticam declarações atribuídas ao vereador Joel, que teriam desvalorizado o trabalho da categoria. Após a repercussão, enfermeiros responsáveis pelas Estratégias de Saúde da Família informaram ao Executivo a decisão de deixar as funções de coordenação das unidades. Nesta quinta-feira (12), a vereadora Maiara Dal Ponte Martins comentou o assunto em entrevista ao Cruz de Malta Notícias.

I remember the actor Sean Penn. He was married to Madonna a long time ago. His house burned down in Malibu during a big fire there. He was on public radio in an interview with Terry Gross, and she was asking him: 'So, your house burned down. What was it like?' And he goes, 'Well, you know, all those nagging duties you're supposed to do? All the papers, the notebooks full of stuff, the to-do lists that piled up? You've got so many things you're supposed to deal with—all those drawers you wanted to clean out?' She goes, 'Yeah, yeah.' He goes, "I don't have that anymore." I'm not advocating for nihilism, you know—just like 'wipe everything out'—but I am talking about changing perspective. Regarding your point about the false ego, it's a practice in seeing what the Upaniṣads say: 'What if my body turns to ashes? How does life go on after that?' In fact there have been books and writings where people come back and visit themselves after their own demise. I think it's one of the themes of It's a Wonderful Life. Yes or yes? Nobody has seen that except for Mālini and a couple of people, because I told them to. A person feels completely overwhelmed by his life, and just as he is about to commit suicide, an angel comes—and the angel's duty is to save him. So, they're both standing on the bridge; the angel jumps into the water and preempts his suicide attempt, so he jumps in to save the angel. Then the angel says, 'I'm going to show you what the world would have looked like if you were never born.' And he takes him around and shows him the consequence of his life. There's a sort of otherworldly, out-of-body sense, because he's going around to all the places he knows and people, seeing how different everything is—and nobody knows him because he's not him anymore. He's taken out of the picture. So, he got a different perspective. You view it from far away, and you see that vanishing point where everything becomes simple. There is a point at which we can realize that carrying the false ego around is complicating my life. Caitanya Mahāprabhu said to work on this (Śikṣāṣṭakam, Verse 3): tṛṇād api sunīcena taror api sahiṣṇunā amāninā mānadena kīrtanīyaḥ sadā hariḥ Which basically means: practice leaving your ego behind and see how your life is without the false ego. Pradyumna said, “Prabhupāda, I'm studying all these things about this yajña, that the other, this name, that, in this part of it. What would you like?” Prabhupāda leaned over and said, “Shortcut.” Jīva Gosvāmī says something similar. He says, any of the rituals we perform in Deity worship or anywhere else have to be preceded by and ended by chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa. That's what makes them successful—not the extensive rituals, tying strings on this and that, throwing rice here and there, although it's kind of fun. It's the chanting of The Holy Names. That's the yajña-saṅkīrtana prayer, yajanti hi sumedhasaḥ. That's the ritual for the age of Kali. That's the sacrifice. That's the worship. And unless you have an ācārya who's associated with the topmost devotees and has imbibed this mood, who brings it and then sets the path, then how is everyone going to accommodate? What's more, people generally get into the details and then make them so exclusive that hardly anybody can follow them, or they exclude people from following certain rituals because they only—this one can follow, only that one can follow. But we find this is the teachings of Lord Caitanya: kibā vipra, kibā nyāsī, śūdra kene naya / yei kṛṣṇa‑tattva‑vettā, sei ‘guru' haya (Cc. Madhya 15.106). This is revolutionary, because Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu was at a time when there were unlimited rules and regulations to follow. But he said, what really counts is if somebody knows the science of Kṛṣṇa. Such a person should be given the opportunity to become a teacher of Kṛṣṇa consciousness and respected as such. So there is our arcana process, our Minister of Deity Worship, Nṛsiṁha Kavaca Prabhu, who's been here before. He's one of the most affable people on earth. He also knows about rules and regulations. He stays at the—during the GBC meetings. He knows all the procedures that you have to follow in order to have a bona fide meeting. So if somebody brings up a point, they call on him and say, “Is that… is that working right?” And he goes, “No, you have to say this before you say that,” etc. And in Deity worship, he knows all the things, yet he doesn't have any Deities at home. He told me. I said, I do that because Prabhupāda said, come worship at the temple. Unless you live far away and you can't come, don't prioritize your own home worship and don't make it too complicated. Many people don't know that, but that's our Deity Worship Minister's example. We are creating our own bodies. The body you have now is a 3D printing of the kind of sound vibration—the kind of data we took in, the kind of data that we listened to, and that we perpetrated in our last life—and therefore, we got printed. Here's your 3D-printed body, exactly because of the sound vibration you put into it. Kṛṣṇa's creative force is inconceivably powerful—the material apparatus—but even more powerful is the sound vibration of His name. So the chanting of His name, remember that it's repositioning us, creating our destiny. We're creating everything in our lives because of the sound vibration we're making. So you can take it that when you're chanting, you're printing. If you want to print a new life, if you want to print a spiritual body, and so forth... Sorry, it's kind of a gross example, but it comes from the sound vibration because—and I'll reiterate and finish—everything comes from subtle to gross. It all starts with sound vibration; even in physics now, the theory is that everything's vibrational. The whole universe is tied together by combinations and permutations of vibration. We are at an amazing time, an amazing juncture, because we are here at a time not so long after Śrīla Prabhupāda landed in America and spread Krishna Consciousness. Perhaps most beneficial is that some of the devotees that first met Śrīla Prabhupāda are still with us. Śyāmasundara Prabhu lives just down the road; I talked to him a couple of days ago. He's working on consolidating his three books into one to make it easier to read and have them translated into other languages. Mukunda Mahārāja lives in New Zealand, and he was just in a car accident—a very close call actually. He's okay, but the fact is that we're still in the midst of those devotees who were arm-in-arm and surrounding Prabhupāda in service, going to various places around the world on his order. So, it's an important time to take advantage of such association by hearing what the devotees who were there have written, have said, and, if possible, meeting them—taking advantage of their association. When they are gone, they are gone. I realized that when I was writing my book, Our Family Business, because I was interviewing a lot of devotees, trying to get as much personal information as possible. One of the devotees was Brahmānanda Prabhu, and as I was interviewing him—just a short time after I had finished talking with him—he had left the planet. And Madhudviṣa—I had interviewed him in Los Angeles as he had come to the Ratha-yātrā. He was in a wheelchair at that time as he was very ill, but he still led kīrtana. You could barely distinguish his voice, but he wanted one last opportunity to come to the Ratha-yātrā. He had very eagerly granted me an interview. I took advantage of that; a couple of days later, he was gone. There was also Keśava. Keśava was Karandhara's brother. Karandhara is still here on the planet, but I was trying to get an interview with him and somebody said, "Okay, in a few days." And then they said he has a cold. Then they said he was in the hospital, and then they said he was gone. So, when devotees are gone, they're gone, I realized. I got so much from talking to them personally—things I had never heard before and things I was able to record. So, we should be sponge-like in trying to take advantage of as much association as possible from these iconic devotees who had spent time with Śrīla Prabhupāda. Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu every day would walk from Akrūra Ghāṭ in Vṛndāvana and sit down at Imlītala. It's preserved in a temple, and there's a little shrine outside where Caitanya Mahāprabhu used to sit under the tree and see the Jamunā. It's a celebrated place where you can remember Caitanya Mahāprabhu sitting and chanting, as it is mentioned in the śāstra that he would come there early in the morning—especially because many people came to see him at Akrūra Ghāṭ and he was besieged by the crowds, people wanting to just look at him and ask him questions. So, he would retreat to Imlītala, and there he would sit alone and see the beauty of the Jamunā River. It is said that he would chant into the late morning and early afternoon, just chanting japa. So that place is very special. We can remember how Caitanya Mahāprabhu is setting the example for all of us: how to relish Kṛṣṇa consciousness is taking time away from any other obligation to just sit and absorb the chanting of the Holy Names. There is nothing more effective than examining oneself and considering one's relationship with Kṛṣṇa by just chanting and hearing the name. We don't have to speculate. We can just suspend any doubts that we have and remember that God is a person; He has a name. His name is non-different from Him, and if we just chant sweetly and let it hit our ears without any expectation or any extra strain—and just be patient and consistent—then everything else will be done by Kṛṣṇa. Today, I'm dedicating our Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam class to His Holiness Badrinārāyaṇa Swāmi. Whether you knew or knew not, he was our GBC for many years although he never came here. He was dedicated to Śrīla Prabhupāda since he was a teenager, joined around 1971.He was known as a stalwart in practicing Kṛṣṇa consciousness throughout his life. He was a householder, took sannyāsa. I had the fortune of serving next to him in many meetings in North America and also on the GBC body. My last interactions with him were in Māyāpur. I gave a report to the GBC which included a proclamation that we would distribute this year, combinedly around the world, 108,000 Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam sets. After my presentation (which was a little more than that), I was interacting with some of the devotees, but he came to me immediately. He grabbed my hands and he said, "Vaiśeṣika, I'm really into this 108,000!" He looked at me with such a sincere expression, and I said, "Mahārāja, I feel like hugging you right now." And he goes, "Well, why don't you then?" I sat next to him during the BBT-GBC Relations Committee. The BBT is a trust—the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust—and a trust has a beneficiary. The beneficiary is ISKCON, and therefore there's a committee of GBCs and BBT directors and trustees that meet regularly, at least once a year for the whole day, or most of the day to go over various ways in which the BBT and GBC are cooperating in beneficial ways. At that meeting, I sat next to him in the meeting room, and I was marveling at how he was able to stay in the body he was in, because he was completely emaciated. Although he mentioned and it was obvious that his body had become very much degraded. Every warranty there is had run out, but he was still running that body and in that body as if his duty was higher and he had no lag time. Actually, before we went to Vṛndāvana from Māyāpur, I asked him where he was going next. He said, "Vṛndāvana." And I said, "Oh, great, I'll see you there." And he said, "Well, we'll see." Because he said, "I'm going there to... Question: What are some practical things to do to our environment to optimize for absorption in the holy name? First of all, make your bed in the morning. Make sure it's completely neat and clean, and then get everything out of your way; that's a distraction to you. Get rid of stuff you don't need. Don't pile up a bunch of junk in your room. If you collected teddy bears when you were a kid, start giving them away and get down to simplicity in your environment. Don't over-collect anything. And then, get rid of your phone. Lock it up, put it in another room, or turn it off. That's drastic—turn it all the way off! And your mind's going, "Wait a minute, where's that little glow that I'm so used to putting in front of my face?" It's a bane on society nowadays; it's actually a travesty that this thing has been invented. Steve Jobs didn't let his kids have iPods or iPhones—do you know that? Because he knew the harmful nature of it. So, shut down your phone, lock it up, put it in another county, and then start chanting. Make an inventory of those things that distract you and then put them somewhere else, out of reach. Baby-proof your room. Your mind's like a little baby: "I want this, I want that." So, you know ahead of time: put it out of reach so that you have every advantage. Practice being bored. The mind is going, "I'm bored," and so you say, "Good. That's good. Be bored." Better that than to be scrolling. And if you practice being bored, sooner or later, you are going to break through. Try for breakthrough. Don't be like everybody else, just getting carried along. Even so-called "smart" people in the world—they don't have this practice. So we're really lucky, and we should take full advantage of it and try to get into absorption. And if you do, Kṛṣṇa will help you. The mercy is there. It's not impossible; it's very, very possible. It's just that we have to practice a lot. We have to practice daily, and we've got to want it and make it a discipline. Then the mind will conform, and Kṛṣṇa will.. In the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam (SB 3.31.1), it is mentioned: karmaṇā daiva-netreṇa jantur dehopapattaye striyāḥ praviṣṭa udaraṁ puṁso retaḥ-kaṇāśrayaḥ The living entity, who is helplessly controlled by the three modes of material nature, gets placed by daiva (higher control) into various material forms. For instance, right now we're in a body—check and see if you're still in it. You are there? Everyone okay? Yeah, we're in a body right now. We won't be here for very long. You know how long life is? It's about the length of a "reel." How long is a reel? Is there a clear definition? I can't figure it out if there's actually a definition of how long a reel is. Does anybody actually know? You guys don't look at the phone ever? You've never seen a reel, huh? Audience: "A minute or less." A minute or less. Okay, that's how long the human life is. It's about a minute or less. Could be ten seconds, even. And we're in many different "reels." So, karmaṇā daiva-netreṇa—we're placed in different bodies and we have a little "reel-life." Not R-E-A-L, but R-E-E-L-life. 'Karmaṇā daiva-netreṇa jantur dehopapattaye striyāḥ praviṣṭa udaraṁ'... we just wake up one day and everyone says, "Welcome to your new family!" And it could be a squirrel family. Or you could be a fish in the water. Fishes are in schools, and then there are flocks of birds. You can end up in a flock, or you can end up in a pack. Or crows—they are called a "murder." A "murder of crows." That's how you group them. So, we're forced by material nature. But gṛhṇato 'nuyugaṁ tanūḥ (SB 10.8.13) means Kṛṣṇa Bhagavān, the Supreme, is not forced. He comes by choice. Or as Prabhupāda puts it in his book, Kṛṣṇa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, He comes by His own "sweet will." We also have willpower, but it doesn't give us autonomy—complete autonomy. Kṛṣṇa has complete autonomy. He's abhijñaḥ (completely conscious of everything) and svarāṭ (completely independent). He can do as He wishes, never forced by anything or anyone. This is what Garga Muni said about the appearance of the Supreme Personality of Godhead, otherwise known as Bhagavān, the source of everything and all opulences. He said: "āsan varṇās trayo hy asya gṛhṇato 'nuyugaṁ tanūḥ." Tanūḥ means He has different bodies. Now, His body is different from the body of a soul that's placed in a material body. Our body is.. We also find later on, after Caitanya Mahāprabhu, there was a deficit, and the teachings of Caitanya Mahāprabhu were not readily available. Even the Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta—which was the ultimate of all teachings of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu and the synthesis of the Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam—was not readily available. So much so that Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura, the great ācārya, was looking for the Caitanya-caritāmṛta and could not find a single copy anywhere. The teachings of Caitanya Mahāprabhu had been not just obscured, but also perverted in many different ways. So, we can't take for granted that the product is available. But now it is, and that's due to the mercy of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, Lord Nityānanda, and the devotees who have carried on the tradition. This morning, on an early walk hoping to see the sunrise, it was a beautiful, painted sky, I was thinking of a lyric—or perhaps just an idiom—from modern American society: "Be true to your school." Is it a lyric from a song? Sounds like the Beach Boys or something. I was thinking about what a "school" is. A school is a consolidation of knowledge meant to uplift us; that's really the idea. Humans have an urge for that. They want to be in a place where they can take advantage of all the best knowledge the world has to offer. Nowadays, it has become a little more vocationally oriented, but previously, classical education had to do with bringing all the best books, teachings, and teachers together in one place. That's what universities were for: to get well-grounded in knowledge and gain a wider context and view of the world. Then, as one has a grounding in knowledge, one can also discern what is "the best." That's the idea of Vedānta. There's knowledge, and then there's the end of knowledge. Of course, if one just studies endlessly, it never comes to a conclusion. There are ways in which people say, "When are you going to graduate?" or "When are you going to finish?" You get a doctorate, then a post-doc—and then what do you have? What do you do after that? We're not meant simply to study endlessly and come to no conclusion. Even Socrates and Plato talked about coming to an ultimate conclusion. It's not that we just break everything down and are fascinated by the process; there should be a development of character (that's more Aristotle). We should also discern the purpose of life and what we should be aiming for as human beings—something to aim for. So all of that comes to bear in the teachings of Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu. Everyone makes mistakes and material life is fraught with missteps. We always wish we had an undue button. Well, we do. And the mantra is, if you don't like what you've created for yourself—and we're not dead stones, we have volition—therefore, first step in recovery from any bad habit is to admit one's own part in it, and admitting that somehow or other, as Lord Caitanya said, "I have fallen into this material ocean," and wanting to undo it, we can realize that if we created it, we can uncreate it. But how do we do that? Well, Karma is a consequence. We start somewhere, and there's a sequence of events that unfolds. There are various ways in the Vedas to atone for missteps sins, but they don't fix the problem. We want to reform the tendency to commit sinful activities, and that, according to our tradition, is through sound—anāvṛttiḥ śabdāt. The last verse of the Vedānta-sūtra says we can become uncovered, or we can reverse the tendency for sinful activity by sound. And what is that tendency? If we look at various Vedic words, Sanskrit words, one that's relevant in this context is vāsanā. Comes from the root word vas which means to remain, and it literally means fragrance. You may notice, if you live in a—if you've ever been in a hotel room that's odoriferous, you may put some camphor in your room. So as you take the camphor out, the odoriferousness comes back. Seeing the assembly of devotees eagerly waiting to purchase the Name, Lord Nityānanda first examines each of them to test their qualification; then, He sells them the Name by bargaining for His price accordingly. Sometimes when we go out—just as we were recently, as recently as yesterday, to people in the dhāma where we just were, (first Māyāpur, then Jagannātha Purī, then Vṛndāvana) we offer people a little prasādam, a picture of Kṛṣṇa, and transcendental literature. And we give them the opportunity; we bargain with them. We say, “Please give something.” They say, “I don't have anything.” “Nothing? Give something.” Some people will give some small donation, whatever they can afford. Some people are ready to immediately give something in return, recognizing the value, and they say, “I could hardly give enough.” Other people are hesitant, but we find, especially in India, everybody has something. We met a man digging a ditch, and all he was wearing was a gamchā. And we suggested that, on behalf of Lord Nityānanda, we would accept a donation. Some of the devotees who were watching thought, “Where is he going to find a rupee?” Well, it's in the roll! When you put on a gamchā, you have to roll it. It's in there. Similarly, everyone's got something rolled up somewhere that they can offer. Lord Nityānanda goes around. He finds what can somebody give that gets them started in giving. Because, as Kṛṣṇa says in the Bhagavad-gītā (BG 3.9): yajñārthāt karmaṇo 'nyatra loko 'yaṁ karma-bandhanaḥ tad-arthaṁ karma kaunteya mukta-saṅgaḥ samācara Human life is made successful by giving. When we give, we grow and we notice that not only do we survive giving away what we're so attached to, we feel complete when we give. Paradoxically, we give away and we grow. We feel fuller, because the soul is a servant of Kṛṣṇa—and any way we can serve fills us up immediately. It is natural for the soul to feel happy and full. So Lord Nityānanda quizzes each person to see what level they can start their giving, and then He adjusts the price accordingly. Oh, my dear friends, if you really want to buy this pure Holy Name, then just come along with me, for I am now going to meet with this Nityānanda Mahājana. We have to be thoughtful of what people can handle. And in talking to Kaustubha Prabhu about it—it was in Wisdom of the Sages—you know, he got inspired about reading Bhāgavatam to people. Yet he reads ahead and sees what can they handle, which parts will they be able to assimilate. There is a certain time at which you do notice that people have enough grounding in Kṛṣṇa consciousness. Part of it is trusting those who are presenting it, and seeing that these people are real. They live real lives; they are sincere, and they are somebody I can trust. That's a bridge that helps people, because even if there are difficult concepts that they come across, they have somebody they can process it with. So that's also a sign that they can take more. We find also that there are times at which people demand more. We have seen also that devotees hold back, and then people are like, 'Alright...' We had this program called 'Kṛṣṇa Life.' It was actually our brand. The sequence was too long, but we had once a month where we would invite people from Meetup.com. People would come over, and we would do a very light presentation, to say the least. It was way too light. And there were these two ladies. After they had been coming for a few months, maybe more—they finally showed up and they had kaṇṭhī-mālā (neck beads) and stuff. They said, 'We found your temple! You've been holding back on us!' So sometimes people push forward and they are like, "Give us the straight thing." And devotees are really, taking something off the pitch' so that they are being too careful. We find in Vṛndāvana that those who are cowherd boys play with Kṛṣṇa, and they sometimes jump on His back. That's not in the arcana-paddhati. I was thinking about what that means because, according to one's relationship, there's a way in which we can be more casual with people. For instance, I've noticed with my relationships that there are gradations of intimacy in friendship—just talking about friendship. There are friends that I've known forever, we've been through a lot together, and we're like-minded. There's a closeness there that allows us to, for example, make jokes at the other's expense. In other words, you say something to 'degrade' the other person, and they think it's hilarious because there's a channel there that allows that—it's a deep expression of friendship. You know, there are people I could knock in the arm. I wouldn't do it that hard, but kind of softly walking by—like in a kīrtana. You know, if I'm walking by in a crowded room full of kīrtana and I just sort of put my arm around somebody and kept walking, or nudged them... I wouldn't do that to everybody. There are certain Godbrothers, yeah, we're friends, but not that kind of friends. They would be like, 'Why did he just punch me in the arm?' You know, love conquers all. There's a way in which the rules and regulations are there, but then the affection factor opens a channel so that those things aren't considered. Because why are the considerations there in the first place? Especially in the material world, there's a sense of: "Don't overstep your boundaries and violate somebody else's sovereignty," as everyone's envious of everybody else, so you have to be really careful. There are etiquettes that act as guardrails to protect us. But when there's love and trust, as Prabhupāda pointed out, then those guardrails aren't necessary to the degree they were before. So these things are carefully considered. For instance, take the līlā in the Caitanya-caritāmṛta of when Govinda is daily taking care of the transcendental body of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. It's a question of alignment because, by nature, we're liberated. It's not that we ever actually mix with the material nature. In the Vedic language, Prabhupāda says, "asango hy ayaṁ puruṣaḥ"—that the jīva actually never has any saṅga with the material world. As elaborated upon by Kapiladeva in the Third Canto of the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, he ascribes the experience of the soul to be dreamlike. He gives this analogy: in a dream, you might see something horrific, like you're being killed by having your head cut off. Then he says, first of all, this is a dream. Second of all, the idea itself is a little misplaced because if your head is cut off, it would be hard to watch yourself—not just "hard" as in abhorrent to watch, but in the sense that your optical nerve is cut! It is a misunderstanding and a misalignment with who we actually are. 'Bhayaṁ dvitīyābhiniveśataḥ syād īśād apetasya viparyayo 'smṛtiḥ.' (SB 11.2.37) This is the definition of the original problem of the soul is apetasya—turning one's face away from Īśa, the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Therefore, bhakti means you turn your face back to Īśa, and the phenomena of bhayaṁ syāt (fear arising) is no longer there. So, there's one fell swoop. 'Kṛṣṇa sūrya-sama; māyā haya andhakāra.' As soon as you bring in Kṛṣṇa, the light comes on. Infamously, in Los Angeles, after the Caitanya-caritāmṛta came out, there were some devotees who were overly intelligent, and they thought, “We are going to beat the system by forming a group that would be so exclusive in hearing that we'll only hear pastimes from a particular section of the Śrī Caitanya-caritāmṛta—and those would have to be mādhurya‑līlā, nothing else. Don't even bring the Bhagavad-gītā into the room.” Prabhupāda said that those devotees who engaged in that were mistaken because they lacked qualification to do such things. Therefore, Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta had given a mantra indicating that for those types of topics, we have to be very careful. He said, “We keep them above our heads.” We're down here at 'vāco vegaṁ manasaḥ krodha‑vegaṁ'—you start there, and when Kṛṣṇa wants you, He'll come and get you. That's the mood of cultivating. Spiritual world is 100% bliss, and nobody is left out of anything, because Kṛṣṇa is unlimited. His way of reciprocating with everyone is unlimited. Here we find Yaśodā mentioned as the greatest devotee. We'll find others mentioned as the greatest devotees also. And considering rasa, the gopīs have the thickest and most qualities and ways of serving Kṛṣṇa. And it's not a question of what I want—“What would I be happy with in serving Kṛṣṇa? What do I want?” When one develops and goes through the śānta‑rasa of not being interested in the material world, then comes—as Prabhupāda mentioned—dāsya‑rasa: “Oh, can I do something for You?” Then it thickens at different levels. But as mentioned in the Bṛhad‑bhāgavatāmṛta, every devotee is fully satisfied with their mode of worshiping Kṛṣṇa, but they are also aware of the hierarchy. And they are also very humble, as you'll see from the ways in which Nārada Muni goes to each devotee and asks, “I heard you're the best,” and they reply, “Me? I've got nothing,” and point to the next one. Even coming to the residents of Vṛndāvana—which is where the hierarchy leads to the top—they say, “Who are we? Everything comes from the Supersoul from within. And then, if we know—out of gratitude—we catch it and write it down. It's like, 'Thank You. Thank You, Kṛṣṇa, for giving me that idea.' One unique idea from the Supersoul can change your whole life, and it also gives you fodder for preaching as well; nothing is so powerful as a unique idea that came from the Supersoul to present. If you find it from somebody else, you can make it work. But if you got it yourself—like you're meditating deeply on your japa and it came to you complete—and then you write it down, you have something for life. It can become your 'brand' because Kṛṣṇa gave it to you. And then, when you speak it, there's something different about your voice. So, it's one of the practices Prabhupāda gave us: to always be aware. Prabhupāda had one of these—not the exact brand—but you can see his little notebooks that he carried with him. There's one on display in Vṛndāvana; we'll look at it when we go there. Make a pilgrimage to see the notebook! You can even see his little notations in there about what he wanted to do, thoughts he had, and so forth. But he was always writing. Every day, he wrote something. Begging for the Holy Name is what we're built for. If you've ever wondered—if you've ever looked at yourself in the mirror and noticed your ears, your eyes, the shape of your head, your arms, your legs—did you ever do that? And think, "Well, what is this design?" It's especially designed for prayer. The human body is built for prayer. And this is the most beneficial mudrā (folded hands). We only feel fully satisfied as humans when we pray to Kṛṣṇa sincerely, "Please engage me in Your service." Otherwise, we're to one degree or another neurotic. Every human being has some neurosis. Sorry to say that in front of Viṣṇugada Prabhu—he's a licensed psychologist. Hope I'm not incorrect. It was Prabhupāda's observation. When he heard somebody in court who was asked to give expert witness about a case—he was asked to certify if a perpetrator was mad or crazy—he said, "As far as I'm concerned, as a psychologist, everybody's crazy." So, when we are able to pray to the Lord, then we feel satisfied. In the nāma-tattva, or the truth of the Holy Name, we find in the Bhāgavatam statements that bring our mind to full concentration in one place, like: kaler doṣa-nidhe rājann asti hy eko mahān guṇaḥ kīrtanād eva kṛṣṇasya mukta-saṅgaḥ paraṁ vrajet (SB 12.3.51) Kali-yuga is a lost cause. It's a very difficult time where people are lazy, misguided, unlucky, and above all, always disturbed: prāyeṇālpāyuṣaḥ sabhya kalāv asmin yuge janāḥ mandāḥ sumanda-matayo manda-bhāgyā hy upadrutāḥ (SB 1.1.10) Sumanda—it's really bad. But there's one good quality in the age: mahān guṇaḥ. You have to follow the scriptures —pramāṇais tat-sad-ācārais (BS 5.59), and you have to behave properly, tad-abhyāsais. You have to have abhyāsa; you have to practice again and again. And about that, I'm going to read you a couple of quotes. Do you want to hear a couple of quotes about practice? Success is built before it is seen. Growth requires commitment. Leaders grow strongest in quiet consistency. I was really inspired by 'Success is built before it is seen,' because in the early practices of devotional service, there are oftentimes complaints: 'How come I'm the only one who can't get anything?' 'I've been left behind,' and 'I don't have a taste,' and so forth. But if we apply ourselves—pramāṇais tat-sad-ācārais tad-abhyāsair—practice. How much? A lot. How much should you practice? A lot. It's two words. How much? A lot. Some people make it one word, 'a lot.' Okay, so how much abhyāsa? Nirantaram, he says. How much did you practice? Pretty much all the time. Nirantaram means without stopping. 'Bodhayan ātmanātmānaṁ' means then there will be awakening. Bodhayan means an awakening of the soul to the relationship with the Lord. 'Bodhayan ātmanātmānaṁ bhaktim apy uttamāṁ labhet'—one will attain this bhakti. Bhaktyā sañjātayā bhaktyā (SB 11.3.31), like this verse says: if you practice the first kind of bhakti properly, then naturally there will be an awakening. So this idea of rāgānuga—it's our practice, and we're fully equipped. Everything is there. The Holy Name is the consolidated practice given by Lord Caitanya Mahāprabhu, who has taken everything in all of the cultures of the Vedic system and all the śāstras, and He has put it in one place. We need that. In the form of Vamana You trick the daitya king Bali by asking him for only three steps of land, and then You take away the whole universe from him by expanding Your steps. When Caitanya Mahāprabhu was teaching about devotional service, he presented 64 items. One of them is chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa; another is associating with devotees; and others are living in a holy Dhāma, reading Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, and worshiping the Deity. He said that of all the 64, these five are so potent that even if you have a little connection with them, you'll make advancement in devotional service. And so, this "coming to the Dhāma" is noticeably prominent in his Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu's teachings, of course, he said you should always live in the Dhāma—but if you can't be there physically, you should be there in your mind and heart. But how will you develop such a connection unless you come here? That's why we're here. So, in great humility, we enter this holy place. I offer my respectful obeisances to His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupāda, who introduced this Dhāma to us, as well as all the other aspects of devotional service. Not only did he introduce it, but he keeps introducing it to us through his books and through all his lectures, teachings—and also by the example he set by inviting his whole international society to come every year. Of course, there were fewer devotees at that time, but I think the invitation still holds. He relished seeing all of his fledgling disciples from various parts of the world—some of them freezing cold, others from places where no one had ever heard "Hare Kṛṣṇa"—coming into the Dhāma together: Māyāpur, Vṛndāvana, and sometimes Purī. So, we offer our respectful obeisances to Śrīla Prabhupāda and beg his permission to be in this Dhāma for a week, and to hear and chant together. While we are here as travelers—because you've already noticed—"travel" comes from the word travail. If you follow the etymology, everyone knows travail means an extreme of discomfort, but it also traces back to an instrument of torture. But it's not torture when we know we are coming to the Dhāma. Just going through security is kind of like a preparation for leaving this world: "And what do you still have on you, buddy? We'll go through it and look." We can't hide anything in this world. It all goes through an X-ray machine and a pat-down somewhere. It is best if we dispense of the useless things that we're carrying around with us before we get to the final security checkpoint. This is a good place to do it. Not that we come here just to leave our troubles or sins, but naturally, when we come here in a mood of service, we'll find that whatever material aspirations we have can be transformed into aspirations for serving Kṛṣṇa. There's an interesting, if not humorous, statement in the Bhāgavata about how there are only two kinds of people who are happy: there is the fool who is in ignorance and the person who has attained complete perfection. Everybody else in between feels 'a pinch.' In fact there is a verse Kṛṣṇa speaks (SB 11.20.27-28) about this interim stage where He says: jāta-śraddho mat-kathāsu nirviṇṇaḥ sarva-karmasu veda duḥkhātmakān kāmān parityāge 'py anīśvaraḥ tato bhajeta māṁ prītaḥ śraddhālur dṛḍha-niścayaḥ juṣamāṇaś ca tān kāmān duḥkhodarkāṁś ca garhyan He acknowledges that someone's faith has awakened—jāta-śraddha. Jāta means the faith has awakened in hearing and chanting, and they say this is the panacea. Then He also says they are aware that sense gratification leads to misery—veda duḥkhātmakān kāmān. But parityāge 'py anīśvaraḥ: He says they don't have the power to not engage in sense gratification. Īśvara means "supreme controller"; it also means the ability to do something. Parityāge means they can't give it up, even though they know that it's not sanguine. But then He goes on to say, tato bhajeta māṁ prītaḥ śraddhālur dṛḍha-niścayaḥ: You should continue on the path with and not be too disturbed because of the fact that you're not at a stage where you feel masterful. (And this isn't exactly your point yet, but I'm building a foundation for getting there.) At the end of the verse, He uses the word garhyan. Garhyan means you can be a little concerned but not overly so that you are not in the position yet because as the ācāryas explain that word in the verse: if you become overly disturbed by your own ineptitude, then you may give up the process. So Kṛṣṇa is encouraging and saying, "It's okay; you're in the medium stage.
