The topic today is 10 Principles to Develop Determination. Let's think first about the word determination. It has the word terminus in it, and that means, essentially, that one can finish what one starts. If you have ever started to read a book and then found that you only got to the second chapter, or if you had an idea to write in your notebook every day for the year, but you found in your drawer five to seven notebooks that were a quarter filled because you started and then you stopped, then maybe you felt frustrated and thought, 'Why couldn't I finish?' What to speak of finishing devotional practices, many people take vows and then later on, they give them up. It's practically commonplace. In fact, those who do follow vows stand out because people say, 'How is it they're still doing it?' And Prabhupāda told us, once, "Don't be amazed at who stops following their vows, be amazed at who does, as it's far more extraordinary." Those who do have the determination to continue and at least put together one lifetime in full dedication to Kṛṣṇa are notable. So, let's talk about some of the principles of determination today. My intention by mentioning these principles is that you can take them with you. Many of them are very practical, and you can enact them yourself, especially if you make a note or listen to this later and go through the ten and find out how you can execute each one of them. I guarantee you'll find an increase in the determination in your life, and maybe other benefits will come from this as well. As a preface to expressing how to develop determination, I'll start with the precursors—how to prepare the field to enact these ten that I'm going to mention today. Doesn't matter how much yoga you practice. Doesn't matter how detached you are, how mindful you are of the world; you may even achieve the point of equanimity. Has anybody here achieved complete equanimity, even when the monkey jumps on your head? No problem! So, even if you've achieved that state, it won't help you unless you have Acyuta-bhāva; you have to have that awakening that comes from Madana-Mohan. It stimulates the heart. It could come from the scent of the Tulasī leaf mixed with saffron. It could come from that one last Kīrtan, and we've seen it before. One young devotee came to the New York Ratha-yātrā. Complete equilibrium in life, because he grew up in a devotee family, and in one Kīrtan, the devotees were jumping up off the ground, and then he started jumping off the ground. After that, he said, "I'm in all the way." Changed. His heart changed. We know another devotee who came to Jagannāth Purī, and he saw the lotus eyes of Toṭā Gopināth, and he said, "That's it. I'm convinced. I'm in." Kṛṣṇa touches our heart. naiṣkarmyam apy acyuta-bhāva-varjitaṁ na śobhate jñānam (SB 1.5.12) Nothing else is enough in this world, through any process, except for bhakti, represented by Madana-Mohan. And that's what this temple is. It's what we should build in our heart. A monument in the heart that says nothing else but Kṛṣṇa only: the worshiping of Kṛṣṇa's lotus feet, chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa. No other demigod, no other movie star, no other sports guy—unless you see them in relationship to Kṛṣṇa. When we have that experience of "I'm attracted to Kṛṣṇa, and all I want is Kṛṣṇa," it doesn't matter externally how entangled we are. How could we enter into Vrindāvan? How could we have a relationship with Kṛṣṇa? Revive our original relationship with Kṛṣṇa? The way that Yaśodā and all the residents of Vṛndāvan did. Isn't that what everybody here wants to know? Isn't this why you came to Brahmāṇḍa Ghāṭ today? This was what Rāmānanda Rāya said, and Lord Caitanya accepted. He said: jñāne prayāsam udapāsya namanta eva jīvanti san-mukharitāṁ bhavadīya-vārtām sthāne sthitāḥ śruti-gatāṁ tanu-vāṅ-manobhir ye prāyaśo 'jita jito 'py asi tais tri-lokyām (SB 10.14.3) Brahmā said, "Throw away as far as you can throw it, any idea of figuring out Kṛṣṇa with your intellect. Make no attempt by your intellect to try to understand Kṛṣṇa, because if you could understand Kṛṣṇa by your intellect, he wouldn't be Kṛṣṇa. He would be some ordinary person. jñāne prayāsam udapāsya namanta eva jīvanti san-mukharitāṁ bhavadīya-vārtām He recommended something that all of you are doing. Do you want to know what he recommended that you're already doing and what you're doing right now? He recommended dedicating one's life to hearing about Kṛṣṇa. Why did you come on this Yātrā? You just wanted to hear about Kṛṣṇa. Admit it. I want you to admit it. All you wanted to do was hear about Kṛṣṇa, right? So he said, "Jīvanti" means "just live for this." If all you do is live, stay alive somehow or other, so that you can hear about Kṛṣṇa in the next class, your life is perfect. All you need is a little khicaḍī and some ācār and maybe a pāpaḍam, but definitely some lime or lemon. Lime is better. That's all you want, so you can stay alive, a little something to feed the fire in the belly. Then all you want is a little place to lie down. It has to be clean. Maybe a mat, a straw mat. Is that good enough? A little straw mat, maybe six and a half feet? Is that good enough? Okay, so all you need is a little khicaḍī, some ācār, maybe pāpaḍam, lime, and a mat to lie down on, so that you can stay alive. You wake up and you think, "Okay, I'm still alive, right?" And then you say, "What do I do now?" Nothing else to do but hear about Kṛṣṇa. So Brahmā said, "Make this your life," or he said, "If it is your life, that's the perfect life. There is a section in the Third Canto of the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam, in which Vidura asked some questions to Uddhava. And Uddhava, before he can answer, has to pull himself away from the spiritual world. He is standing on this earth, but he has to pull himself away consciously from the spiritual world to be able to answer Vidura. This is something that the ācāryas note: that when one becomes perfect in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, although we may be walking on this earthly planet, still, our consciousness is fully engaged in Kṛṣṇa's pastimes in the spiritual world. So this was Uddhava, who is very, very dear to Lord Kṛṣṇa, who carried the message for Kṛṣṇa, who discovered the greatest devotees and commemorated it by his prayers that he wrote glorifying the gopīs of Vṛndāvana. And here we are, Uddhava Kuṇḍa. We can also pray that somehow or other, we can get the dust of the feet of the great devotees. When we were driving in the rickshaw, somehow we took a shortcut. We drove across a dusty road, and I could hear that Sudhīr Mādhava was joking in the front seat about how we were getting a rajo-'bhiṣekam. Do you know what that is? It's a dust bath. And that's my final point: what is most recommended for advancement in devotional service? rahūgaṇaitat tapasā na yāti na cejyayā nirvapaṇād gṛhād vā This comes from the story in Fifth Canto with Mahārāja Rahūgaṇa and Jaḍa Bharata (SB 5.12.12), who says that you can't make advancement in this world by simply performing severe austerities. Some Yogīs, they sit in cold water up to their neck, or they sit around hot fire in the summertime, or they decide not to eat for long periods of time—whatever austerity somebody takes up, he said, "This is not how you make spiritual advancement." He says, "Until you get the rajo-'bhiṣeka, the dust bath from the feet of a pure devotee, that's when you make advancement." On a very practical level, this means to take up some service in the guru-pranāli-paramparā, become the servant of the servant of the servant of the servant. Deities are known for their intimate connection with their devotees, and the secret in life was given by one of my godbrothers, who used to live in Govardhan. He lived and passed in Govardhana. His name is Gopīparāṇdhana Prabhu. He had stayed where we were, right next to where we were this morning for breakfast. He lived just down the road from there, in a little house with his wife and child and a couple of cows. He was a great scholar, a linguistic scholar. He helped to translate many of Prabhupāda's books, including the 10th, 11th, and 12th Cantos. Also, he was the great expert who was able to bring the Bṛhat Bhāgavatamṛta to light in a perfect way, praised by the greatest scholar of Gaudiya Vaishnavism at the time in the academic world Joseph T. O'Connell who said, "Nobody else in the world could have done that." That was the great Gopīparāṇdhana Prabhu. And he said once, something that I've always kept with me and that anyone can live by for great success in life, and I would like to tell you.He said, "It's not what you know that counts, it's who you know and what you are." So we learned this lesson from Śrīla Kavirāja Gosvāmī, from Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, to find the pure devotees and follow in their footsteps. Even if we feel unqualified, even if we are unqualified, we become qualified. Kalpante ye 'nu tān iha—in this world, from whatever position we're in now, even Sūta Gosvāmī says in the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam (SB 1.2.25): bhejire munayo 'thāgre bhagavantam adhokṣajam sattvaṁ viśuddhaṁ kṣemāya kalpante ye 'nu tān iha Which means that previously, all the great saints worshipped the Supreme Personality of Godhead, who is beyond the three modes of material nature. Anyone who follows in their footsteps and tries to emulate what they have done according to their capacity becomes eligible for the same result that they attained. So we come here begging for the mercy of Śrīla Mādhavendra Purī, thinking of how he carried wood in his hands for the Lord. In the Age of Kali, intelligent persons perform congregational chanting to worship the incarnation of Godhead who constantly sings the names of Kṛṣṇa. The means for making advancement towards the spiritual world are mentioned in the 10th Canto of the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam (SB 10.2.30): tvayy ambujākṣākhila-sattva-dhāmni samādhināveśita-cetasaike tvat-pāda-potena mahat-kṛtena kurvanti govatsa-padaṁ bhavābdhim Say the demigods, meditating on Lord Kṛṣṇa, praying to Him within the womb that one should have one-pointed attention on Kṛṣṇa (samādhināveśita-cetasaike)." And then they say, "We can achieve that by following Kṛṣṇa's and his representative's instructions: tvat-pāda-potena mahat-kṛtena." The Mahat, those who are great souls, Mahātmanas tu māṁ Pārtha (Kṛṣṇa says), "They are following My process," and that means we should respect the process that's passed down to us. That includes the vows we're taking, and always keep those as your life and soul. You'll be taking vows today, so keep those as your mainstay in life. The way that you are able to maintain your life airs is by following your vows: chanting at least 16 rounds, avoiding the four prohibited activities, and being diligent in chanting your Gāyatrī mantras and so forth. And if we can do that, follow the simple process strictly, says Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākur. He quotes from śāstra in the Bhajana Rahasya: "Take the simple path. You don't have to invent anything else; nothing fancy needed. Just follow the simple path. Jīva Goswāmī says that this verse, "Sarva-dharmān parityajya," is the solace of all devotees, and they think about it again and again: "How Kṛṣṇa, by speaking this verse to Arjuna, saved the whole world!" If you ever fear, feel left out, frustrated, abused, confused, or angry with your lot in life, consider this verse. And consider Draupadi putting our hands high in the air and saying, "He Govinda!" This is the sum and substance of the teachings of the Bhagavad Gītā: "To seriously consider surrendering completely to Kṛṣṇa". We may feel, as Prabhupāda mentioned in the purport, "How might I do this?" But he says, "Such a consideration is useless. Just do it." And if you can't do it, as my mom used to tell me, "Why don't you sit there and think about it?" It's an amazing experience if you think about this verse. If you sit down to chant Hare Kṛṣṇa, and then you think, "Sarva-dharmān parityajya. Kṛṣṇa is the Supreme Personality of Godhead. I'm helpless. He's offering to handle all my affairs. What if I really did surrender? What if I just let go of every conception of helping myself? And I simply thought, Kṛṣṇa, I leave it all to you. I'm sold out 100% to you, and I'll just live my life like that from now on." If you just think about it, you'll feel exhilarated. You might not even do it in that very second, but thinking about it and doing it is almost exactly the same thing.Therefore, Kṛṣṇa saved us. He saved the whole world just by speaking this verse. And if you can put it in a locket around your neck—if you can imprint it on your consciousness and breathe it at every moment and think, "My only solace in life is Kṛṣṇa speaking this verse and offering me an opportunity to accept Him wholly and solely as my maintainer, protector, and the soul of my soul"—that's where real happiness will come from. There are various levels of chanting, and two of them can be identified as attentive chanting and inattentive chanting. So, attentive chanting means that I'm very much aware that I'm chanting. I'm also hearing the syllables, aware of the name, the quality of it; there's some engagement of my mind. And inattentive chanting means it's like idling a car—the car is idling, and then you're doing something else. We can be chanting, the lips moving, and the sound going out, but my mind can be attached to another process. For instance, I might be thinking about the fact that I forgot to buy ginger and have to go to the store, or any other number of things—an email that I didn't send. That's where my mind is actually engaged, but the mouth is going, sound is coming, but I'm not attentive, not attached. Attention means ten. It's the same word that's in tendon. A tendon attaches the muscle to the bone. And when we have attention to the Holy Name, there is present engagement at the very moment, and I'm not thinking of something else. So, in practicing chanting, it can be very helpful to be just aware of which stage I'm in. Am I in the attentive state, or am I in the inattentive state? Not attentive to the Holy Name, or attentive to the Holy Name? And if I keep checking in with that and seeing, "Am I attaching to it? Am I engaging with the Holy Name with my mind right now, my awareness," then I'm likely to feel enlivened and not want to stop chanting. And if I'm not aware of it, if I'm thinking of something else, there is a point at which, during japa period, I'll think, "I've got to go. I just got to go somewhere," because I can't stay here. So, those are the two things that one can be aware of that can be really helpful. This makes it simple: just keep coming back to the attention, giving attention to the Holy Name. Just ask yourself, "What stage am I in? Attentive or inattentive?" When we come to see Kṛṣṇa and He glances on us and we see His beautiful form, then we are looking at the ultimate object of meditation. If we drive through Jaipur, we'll see many signboards, and everyone's trying to catch our attention to look at something. Maybe there's Coca-Cola, and they have a picture of some attractive-looking person drinking sugar water. They are not going to look so good in a few years, I guarantee you. And they are hoping that that will catch our attention and we'll say, "Okay, I would like to look like that." And everywhere we look, there's something for our eyes to fall upon. So the perfection of the eyes is to come and see Kṛṣṇa in the temple, and then chant Hare Kṛṣṇa. And these two things together—coming and seeing Kṛṣṇa, worshiping Kṛṣṇa, ringing the bell, bowing down, offering flowers, and chanting Hare Kṛṣṇa—these are like two tracks on a train track. And where does the train go? Straight back to Goloka Vṛndāvana. So we are all on that train right now. Just look around—all the compartments are not even filled. We can put more people on this train! And the way the train goes, you load everybody on, and the way the train goes, you go see Kṛṣṇa, and then you chant, Hare Kṛṣṇa. And then the train takes you back home, back to God, and you forget about all the Coca-Cola signs in the world and all the clamor here in the material world. It's Much Ado About Nothing. There's nothing really going on in the material world that is of interest to the soul whatsoever. It's a big fake out. So we have this opportunity together that's quite exhilarating. Don't you think? We could do this for days! So these prayers were offered by Jayadeva Gosvami. One Vaisnava poet advented about seven hundred years before Lord Caitanya's appearance. He was a great devotee, and his specific poetry, Gita-govinda, is very famous all over the world. Gita- govinda. Gita-govinda is the subject matter of Krsna playing on flute about Radharani. That is the subject matter of Gita-govinda. The same poet, Jayadeva Gosvami, has offered this prayer, pralaya-payodhi-jale-dhrtavan asivedam. He says, “My dear Lord, when there was devastation within this universe, everything was filled with water. At that time You saved the Vedas stacked in a boat, and You held the boat from being drowned in the water in the shape of a big fish.” This fish first of all was caught in the waterpot just like a small fish. Then it enlarged, and the fish was kept in a bigger water reservoir. In this way, the fish was increasing. Then the fish informed that “Devastation is coming. hose who are cultivating spiritual life and executing devotional service are always engaged in activity. Such activity can be performed with the body or with the mind. Thinking, feeling and willing are all activities of the mind, and when we will to do something, the activity comes to be manifest by the gross bodily senses. Thus, in our mental activities we should always try to think of Kṛṣṇa and try to plan how to please Him, following in the footsteps of the great ācāryas and the personal spiritual master. There are activities of the body, activities of the mind and activities of speech. A Kṛṣṇa conscious person engages his words in preaching the glories of the Lord. This is called kīrtana. In fact, one of the stories is about how a capitalist from Calcutta had gone to meet Babaji Maharaj where he was chanting in the field. Because this guy was rich, he thought, "Look, I have everything except for a guru. If I get a guru, then I've got everything—and the whole package! Not only am I the best materially, but everyone will say I have the best guru too, because who's more renounced than him?" So he went there and surrendered in the middle of the field, thinking something like, "You know, I will give you whatever you want. I'll build your little place." He was thinking, "What could he want? He's just sitting out here in the field." And then Babaji Maharaj said to him, "Okay, I'll accept you. I only have one thing to ask." He asked "What is that?" Maharaja said, "You sit down here with me and don't go home. That's the only alms I beg." And that person fled because he wasn't sincere. He was just going with an insincere request, with a material desire. But Prataparudra was different. Cc Madhya 11.49-126 https://vedabase.io/en/library/cc/madhya/11/advanced-view/ ------------------------------------------------------------ In this context, there is a way in which Kṛṣṇa describes to Uddhava in the Eleventh Canto of Śrīmad Bhāgavatam that the soul is never really liberated from the material world, because it was never bound in the first place. There is no liberation unless you are actually bound to the material world. "Asaṅgo hi ayaṁ puruṣaḥ" — the living entity never had anything to do with it in the first place. So he is never really connected with it. This idea of "now he's liberated" is a misnomer. Kṛṣṇa says that — plain and clear. And so, you know, being more liberal with the idea of Nitya-siddha, if you go to the other side of the spectrum and you understand that those who are fully engaged with Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu in service, they have nothing to do with the material world anymore, and they have assumed their original condition, which is nitya-siddha. It's also described how there are sādhana-siddhas, there are kṛpā-siddhas, and there are nitya-siddhas. And in most places, there is special consideration for the nitya-siddhas because they never touched the material world in the first place. But.. as Prabhupāda writes, "Siddha is siddha," whether it's sādhana-siddha or kṛpā-siddha or nitya-siddha. 'Siddha means siddha.' Sometimes people argue over this and say, "Yeah, but that guy's a sādhana-siddha or whatever." But siddha is siddha. Besides that, you're a soul; you never touched the material world in the first place. So, I think these purports are absolutely charming and encouraging, because it's what the devotees feel when they join the Kṛṣṇa Consciousness Movement, Lord Caitanya's movement. It's so potent! Every knowledge system requires axiomatic statements. Otherwise, you can't go anywhere. Axiomatic means they don't require investigation. They're just accepted. And if you don't have that, as Aristotle said, you get infinite regress. You can't go anywhere. It's like troops keep retreating and retreating and retreating, and they never stand and fight. And H. H. Hridayānanda Mahārāja gave the example of this: that someone says, 'What temperature is water? What, 200 degrees, or whatever it is.' I said, 'Prove it.' So then you get water, and you boil it, put a thermometer in, and then it says 200, and then it starts to boil. And you say, 'There, it's proved.' He says, 'Wait a minute, prove that's a real thermometer.' So then you go get a thermometer testing kit, whatever that is, and you test it. You say, 'Okay, it's real.' And then you go, 'Prove that that's a real thermometer testing kit.' And in that way, you keep going back and back and back. There has to be a point at which you have an axiom where this is the source—this is self-revealing. It proves itself. You don't have to investigate it. So, every system has that. In our system of epistemology, the Vedas are apauruṣeya. They're not from a human source. They come directly from the Divine. In fact, they're co-eternal with Kṛṣṇa, and they prove themselves. And of course, Prabhupāda goes into some detail on this in the beginning of the Śrī Īśopaniṣad in this lecture in Albert Hall. He gave this as a premise to say how to understand this philosophy. It's hard to meet a famous person, but if that famous person writes a book, you get the best of that person, and you get to sit there in the comfort of your own home and that's like, 'How am I with this person that's telling me all their secrets?' They put everything in the book, and so Prabhupāda did the same thing. He said, 'If you want to know me and everything I had to say, read my books.' And he personally told a few of us—I was there with Keśava Bhāratī Mahārāja and myself and a couple of other devotees in San Francisco circa 1974—and our temple president gave the book distribution report, and then Prabhupāda looked at us, and he said, 'You must also read my books. I have not written them just for selling. I have written them for you to become a pure devotee and go back home, back to Godhead.' Thunderbolt! So that's what we're doing, purposefully coming to 'THE' place on the planet, which our authorities say is better than Rādhākuṇḍa, in a way, because from here we're like this (folded hands) 'to Rādhākuṇḍa. We stay here at Rādhākuṇḍa with Śrī Kṛṣṇa Mahārāja and his exalted devotees, and we just hear from Prabhupāda's books, and we discuss- 'smarantaḥ smārayantaś ca, 'and from that sādhana, then comes the emergence of bhāva. It comes naturally, so that's why we are here. If you have been instrumental in creating the world by your speech and what you're listening to, you can uncreate it. Wouldn't you like to have an undo button, like 'undo whatever you've done,' or an uncreate button? If you don't like what you've created, uncreate it. You can reverse the process. And that's what happens with transcendental sound. Instead of cohorting with the material energy—talking about it, listening to ideas about how to manipulate it, and so forth—one transfers one's hearing process to hearing from the spiritual world. tad-vāg-visargo janatāgha-viplavo yasmin prati-ślokam abaddhavaty api nāmāny anantasya yaśo 'ṅkitāni yat śṛṇvanti gāyanti gṛṇanti sādhavaḥ (SB.1.5.11) It means that there is sound that comes from another creation, and when that sound comes in, and you utilize that sound, it reverses the process of material creation and brings one back to one's original consciousness. And this idea of shpota, living being never actually mixed with the material world. 'Asaṅgo hy ayaṁ puruṣaḥ,' the Vedas say: 'You're not part of the material world. Never were. You're not right now either.' So, even Kṛṣṇa says in the Eleventh Canto of the Bhagavatam, 'There's no liberation for the soul, because he was never actually in bondage.' This is one perspective, and Kṛṣṇa is giving it to Uddhava because you never even touch the material world. You're only imagining that you're interacting with it through this facility that's created because of material sound, which is generated by your own desire. So, change it, and you can uncreate what you've done.
