In this episode, I’m joined by Dr. John Douillard, a leading expert in Ayurvedic medicine and founder of LifeSpa.com. I read his book Body, Mind, and Sport about 20 years ago, and it was one of the first books I found that combined breath work and movement. With over 40 years of experience, Dr. John blends ancient Ayurvedic wisdom with modern science to help people achieve lasting health, vitality, and longevity. We talk about how aligning your diet and lifestyle with your dosha and the seasons can optimize gut health and detoxification. You’ll learn why today’s extreme wellness trends might work short-term but often miss the root causes of poor health. I discuss how nasal and diaphragmatic breathing techniques—practiced by elite athletes and used by Dr. John in his own triathlon training—can improve oxygen delivery, reduce stress, and open up the diaphragm. Dr. John explains that 91% of athletes don’t have a fully contracting and relaxing diaphragm because of excessive sitting, which keeps the diaphragm in a pre-contracted, rigid state. He walks us through a basic Ayurvedic breathing technique called DPR—breathing through the belly, chest, and upper chest while raising your arms—to fully engage and loosen the diaphragm. This breath work pumps the lymphatic system, clears toxins, and helps with brain health. We also cover the “bellows breathing” exercise, or “The One Minute Meditation,” a powerful technique to open the rib cage, increase energy, and enter a deep state of calm. This conversation cuts through the noise of trendy health advice, so if you want to reconnect with time-tested strategies rooted in Ayurveda that support long-term well-being, you don’t want to miss this show. Dr. John Douillard is a globally recognized expert in Ayurveda and the founder of LifeSpa.com—one of the world’s most trusted sources for evidence-based Ayurvedic healthcare. He’s authored seven books and over 1,500 articles, helping millions reverse aging and heal naturally. Dr. John began his Ayurvedic studies in India in 1986 and later partnered with Deepak Chopra to train Western doctors in Ayurvedic medicine. He also served as Director of Player Development for the NBA’s Brooklyn Nets and has applied Ayurvedic techniques to improve athletic performance, working with top athletes including Billie Jean King. Check out his website, www.lifespa.com, and explore his books—especially Body, Mind, and Sport, which explores how nasal breathing can enhance performance and reduce the stress of exercise.

Today we dive deeper into the layers of the mind and personality with Ayurvedic Psychology 102: The 3 Doshas and the 3 Gunas. At the heart of Ayurveda lies a timeless template. One that explains not just your body and mind, but consciousness itself through the lens of the five elements and their expressions as the Doshas and Gunas. This isn't just about understanding your stress responses or emotional habits, though that's part of it. It's about learning to see the world through the lens of nature's intelligence. We'll begin with the 3 Doshas: Vata, the principle of movement and change; creative, spontaneous, but prone to anxiety and fragmentation.Pitta, the force of transformation focused, passionate, and discerning yet can burn out or become irritable. Kapa, the energy of structure and cohesion, loving, loyal and calm, but sometimes resistant to change. And then we'll move into the 3 Gunas, the subtle forces of the mind: Sattva brings clarity, peace, and harmony.Rajas brings action, ambition, and restlessness. Tamma brings stillness, but also inertia, confusion or ignorance. These 6 forces, the three Doshas and the three Gunas form a living map of consciousness. They help us understand why we feel, what we feel, do what we do, and how to come back into alignment with our higher self. When you begin to see yourself and others through this elemental lens, life starts to make more sense. You stop personalizing everything and start realizing and relating to your experience with compassion, insight, and greater freedom. Wellness expert and author Heather Grzych explores the pervasive influence of the negativity bias - the psychological tendency to focus more on what's wrong than what's right - and how it can disrupt our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Drawing from both spiritual and Ayurvedic wisdom, she unpacks how this mental habit creates emotional and physical impacts and blocks the subtle channels of the mind, leading to imbalances in the doshas and depletion of vitality. Heather shares practical tools for shifting out of this feedback loop. She reminds us that healing is not about perfection but about letting go - of criticism, shame, and old stories - so we can return to wholeness. Have you ever wondered why your ayurvedic practitioner asks you to sleep and eat in this or that way, to choose or avoid such and such foods and cooking methods; and to follow or avoid certain lifestyle habits, practices, and routines? In this enlightening two-part episode Dr. Teitelbaum explains in depth the principles that set the foundation for health, well-being, and bliss the ayurvedic way. Part 1 covers with erudition the concepts of Prana and Doshas, which set Ayurveda apart and above Western medicine going beyond the physical body into the realm of our vibrational physiology. Part 2 addresses ojas, the subtle vibrational “tissues” that complete the physiology equation when added to the seven physical tissues. And ama, the poorly-digested/semi-processed food substances that clog our channels and create toxins, the two issues at the root of almost every human illness.

Join Matt and Chris for a trademark 'short' episode as they continue to navigate the complex, occasionally controversial world of Dr. K in this second multi-dimensional episode. This time they take a look at some more recent content and reflect on whether they were wrong to identify Dr. K as such a strong advocate of Ayurvedic medicine. In their investigations, they explore the science of visualisation and manifestation, updated genomic information about the Doshas, and the power of mantras to bend the universe. But primarily they focus on the recent lively discussion between Dr. K and another famous YouTube Doctor, Dr. Mike. Their discussion touched on various topics including the mechanisms of science, the power of consciousness, personalized treatments, and the placebo effect. All good fodder for the DTG grinder even if it ends up, as it so often does, with Chris and Matt gently discussing their points of view about the nature of mind and the (alleged) mystery of subjective experience (we are sorry!).So join us for a thought-provoking ride through scientific criticism, holistic practices, and age-old East vs. West / Alternative vs Science-based medicine debates as we attempt to decipher whether Dr. K is a modern-era internet sage or a charismatic storyteller and alternative medicine advocate.LinksDoctor Mike: Debating The Value Of Eastern Medicine (Ayurveda) | Healthy Gamer Dr. KHeatlhyGamerGG: The Truth About Visualization & ManifestationHealthyGamerGG: Optimize Performance and Develop Self-Understanding with AyurvedaScience is Dope: Should we adopt Ayurveda | An Indian's response | Dr. Mike vs Dr. K

It can be as effective as NSAIDs for issues like joint pain and arthritis, without the negative side effects. Curcumin may also benefit brain health, metabolic health, and the immune system.
