I learned so much in this chat with Coach Calie – about managing stress, my diet, about giving myself grace, about focusing on the full picture. Let me know what you liked about this episode. Here's some highlights from our discussion: - We have over complicated our lives. And focusing on habits has a huge impact on our lives - Typically, when we think of health, we think "doctors". Doctors focus on specific areas and usually prescribe medicines. But health coaches focus on lifestyle and daily habits. They look beyond the symptoms and focus on root cause. They empower the patients to improve their own lives. - The way we think of ourselves is a very important part of staying healthy. - Teens are under a lot of pressure. Too much information from social media etc. Take time to think who you want to be. - Focus on yourself and stop comparing yourself to other people. - Stress can be different types – some of which can be reduced by looking at your routine. Important actions: - Never skip meals - Eat well-rounded meals - Pick plants on your plate at every meal. And make sure to eat fiber. The occasional bag of chips or Starbucks is OK – but as long as your body has good nutrition first. - Calm down before eating using simple box breathing techniques Instagram: @CoachCalie Website: CoachCalie.com One course is free – for all girls and women Other course is more detailed – geared for women over 35 Interview with Nic (my soccer coach and Calie's fiance) was episode #75: Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/episode/0LEv0yEPTXnmfADSGw0s2V Apple Podcast: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/riyas-ramblings-ep-75-a-chat-with-my-soccer-coach/id1503527022?i=1000644959750 Shoutout to Ms. Daisy (my mom's friend) and to Darshana, my friend. In the 1990s, India's mediascape saw the efflorescence of edgy soft-porn films in the Malayalam-speaking state of Kerala. In Rated A: Soft-Porn Cinema and Mediations of Desire in India (U California Press, 2024), Darshana Sreedhar Mini examines the local and transnational influences that shaped Malayalam soft-porn cinema—such as vernacular pulp fiction, illustrated erotic tales, and American exploitation cinema—and maps the genre's circulation among blue-collar workers of the Indian diaspora in the Middle East, where pirated versions circulate alongside low-budget Bangladeshi films and Pakistani mujra dance films as South Asian pornography. Through a mix of archival and ethnographic research, Mini also explores the soft-porn industry's utilization of gendered labor and trust-based arrangements, as well as how actresses and production personnel who are marked by their involvement with a taboo form negotiate their social lives. By locating the tense negotiations between sexuality, import policy, and censorship in contemporary India, this study offers a model for understanding film genres outside of screen space, emphasizing that they constitute not just industrial formations but entire fields of social relations and gendered imaginaries. Dr. Darshana Sreedhar Mini is an Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin- Madison. She did her PhD from the University of Southern California. Her teaching and research lie at the intersection of gender, sexuality, transnational media, migrant media and screen cultures of South Asia. During this phase, with a lot of difficulty, she exited the partnership with TTS: IO and started her own venture D'Artist Talent Ventures. Not only did she retain the team, but also brought back the business to normalcy within a year, despite the ongoing pandemic. D'Artist Talent Ventures continues to grow at a healthy rate and expand its horizon to the ambitious objectives set out in the space of Entertainment and Sports. Darshana Khiani returns to the #ReadingWithYourKids #Podcast to celebrate her new #PictureBook Building A Dream. Darshana tells us this book is an unforgettable tale of persistence and problem-solving, based on the amazing true story of a Thai soccer team who made their own place to play. In Thailand's Phang Nga Bay, atop a network of stilts, floats the village of Koh Panyee—where a group of boys loved soccer but had nowhere to practice. Where could they find space to dribble, juggle, shoot, and score? The boys looked out at the water and started gathering tools. Even while their neighbors laughed, they sawed wood, hammered nails, and tied barrels together. The team worked for weeks to build Koh Panyee's first floating field—a place to practice, and a place to transform their community. With engaging soccer scenes and atmospheric images of southern Thailand, this inspiring book follows a group of boys who became a team long before they had jerseys or even a field. Plank by plank, they built their dream. Click here to visit Darshana's website - https://darshanakhiani.com/books/building-a-dream/ Click here to visit our website - www.readingwithyourkids.com

Today is Ganga dussehra (when Ganga descended on this earth to sustain, purify and bless all of humanity). Ganga is not an ordinary river. She is Devi. We understand her greatness through the vision of Adi Shankaracharya through his composition, Ganga Stotram. In 'seeing' what Adi Shankaracharya 'saw' and praised of Mother Ganga, we stand purified and blessed. The episode includes the story of why Ganga descended on earth and the meaning of the opening verses of the stotram and it was recorded on her holy banks in Rishikesh. Also, if you have some Gangajal at home, do sprinkle a few drops on your head and allow yourself to be blessed. As long as we live, conflicts arising from differences in opinions, views and perspectives cannot be avoided. Then, how can we apply karma yoga in these challenging situations? We first identify whether our approach to resolving conflicts is aggressive, assertive, passive, passive-aggressive or collaborative and then work to apply the most appropriate approach. Our karma grows in kaushalam, competent karma offered unto Bhagavan and we are better able to accept people and situations. We fight. We learn. We grow. Darshana Khiani shares I'm an American, a beautifully depicted, thought-provoking look at the many ways we define what it means to be an American. BOOK DESCRIPTION: I'm an American by Darshana Khiani; illustrated by Laura Freeman Page Length: 48 pages Ages 4to 8, Grades P to 3 I'm an American by Darshana Khiani; illustrated by Laura Freeman What does it mean to be American? A classroom of children across many races, cultures, and origins explores the concept of Americanness as they each share bits of their family history and how their past has shaped their own personal American experience. Whether as new immigrants, or those whose family came to this country generations ago, or other scenarios, these children's stories show some of the broad range of cultures and values that form the history and identity of our nation. A beautifully depicted, thought-provoking look at the vast expanse of cultures that exists in America, the values that bring us together as one people despite our differences, and the many ways we define what it means to be an American. NOTABLE QUOTES: (7:01) “This book, honestly, I think it's for ages eight to a hundred. I think it's a conversation starter. What does it mean to be an American?” (8:32) “There's a term that I learned and I hope we hear it more in the media. It's called “representational belonging”. And it's about when you see yourself in history, it makes you feel that, “Oh my God, I'm an American, too. I belong here.” Right? “I'm not just that immigrant or part of that immigrant family that came post 1965.” (8:59) “I'm hoping it can open up discussion about what are the challenges we have of living up to our American values, cause we certainly have plenty. And where have we succeeded as a nation and where do we still have work to do?” (11:23) “And I also wonder if it's the fear of the unknown, right? Because we understand ourselves and so if we see people talking and we don't understand what they're saying, then, you know, we might worry, “Oh, are they talking about us? What do they think about?” You know, it's just that fear of the unknown.” (12:29) “Being in the writing world has allowed me to diversify and to learn. I've learned about so much about other cultures by being a writer because I just have the ability to come into contact with more people. So, I personally am grateful of how it has changed my life by being a writer. (13:27) “I'm hoping now we're at a time where we can really broaden our definition of American. Obviously, we can't get away from the colonial history and our foundings, but I think as we talk about the other groups and their achievements during those times, which were, you know, in the 1800s or in the early 1900s where there's just so much focus on white history. And if we talk about the accomplishments and the contributions of these other people, I think that will then help ingrain into kids from an early time that America was diverse from the beginning.” (22:01) “No group of people, you know, ethnicity or religion or class, is a monolith. And to truly learn about anyone, you have to dig deeper. So like, if you see something that's interesting, don't assume that that represents the kid next to you that might be from that culture, because it may, but most likely it may not. So it's always best to go into a conversation about something with an open mind and rather than assumption.” (21:08) “No matter your skin color, religion, ethnicity, or even your citizenship, if you feel America is your home, then you are American. And for those of you who have a stronger connection to another country and don't consider yourself American, that's okay too. You still belong and are welcome here.” ADDITIONAL LINKS: Darshana Khiani Website - darshanakhiani.com South Asian Kidlit Newsletter - darshanakhiani.com/southasiankidlit Purchase the Book - I'm an American TALK ABOUT THE EPISODE: Who do you consider an American? What qualities, characteristics, or qualifications do you think one must possess in order to be considered an American? What is a part of your identity for which you feel pride? This could be literally anything from the place where you live to a skill you have or an identifying feature. Anything at all. What makes you proud about this part of yourself? Is it something you've shared with others? What does it feel like to share something about your identity with someone who is different from you? Have you ever felt like a part of your identity has kept you out of being included? If so, in what way? Have you ever felt like a part of your identity was the very reason for being included? If so, what was that experience like for you? Name three ways that our differences can actually make us stronger together. Runaanubanda is unique to the Vedic tradition because it considers connections with different beings across lifetimes. Runam/Rnam, debt is based on the principle of reciprocity – a mutual give and take. If I have taken more than I have given, I incur a debt and have to pay back to that person. If I have given more than I have taken, then that person has to pay back his/her debt to me. How does runaanubanda affect me and how can I be free from it? When we enter a lit room, we see the many objects that are around. One thing that most of us miss is the 'light' in which one sees all the objects. The living teaching tradition of Advaita Vedanta is lit up by the the bhashyas, commentaries of Jagadguru Adi Shankaracharya. We see the important features of the bhashya which make it the light that lights up our lives and in so doing, offer our respects to him, on his jayanti. We celebrate Adi Shankaracharya Jayanti on 25th April, 2023, more than 1200 years later by graciously receiving his legacy and sharing it. Many spiritual-but-not-religious people say that they believe in 'laws of nature'. Then, who put the 'laws of nature' together? They will shrug and say, laws of nature were not made by any person or entity. This stubborn insistence of using the term ‘laws of nature' is a remnant of the 17th century and emerged in opposition to the church. We understand its background and spare a thought for the intelligent being and material that pervades the 'laws of nature' - Bhagavan To read the podcast transcript/ article- https://discoveratma.com/category/podcast/ Our April 2023 Aarsha Vidya Bharati newsletter - The blessing of darshana l Dhyaanam course l Adi Sankaracharya Jayanti celebration l SHINE teacher training l Darshana l Value of Values and much more ! - https://mailchi.mp/0e1299422885/aarsha-vidya-bharati-apr2023 Our monthly newsletter will bring you more happiness, more wisdom and more freedom. Julie and Casey sit down with Erotic Wholeness coach Darshana Avila to discuss pleasure as a nutrient, a “more than sexy” definition of erotic, the importance of self- AND community care, and the ultimate cure for burnout. Along the way, we get into why the Powers That Be don't want us to be embodied — and how staying connected to and feeling pleasure in your body may be one of the most powerful ways we can disrupt oppressive systems. Check out our brand new VVT Workbooks! The POWER/PLAY Communication Manifesto and How to Rehearse guide can be found here. TOP TAKEAWAYS: “Erotic” as Darshana defines it is encompassing of sexuality, but so much more: our bodies as sensors, our world as full of sensory experiences, and our creativity and life force and desire and connection. “Wholeness” is about the work of knowing, exploring, and integrating all of our humanity. The body / brain disconnect is systemic — we're told that we ARE our brains, our productivity, our striving, etc, and that our bodies are only for utilitarian purposes. The principle weapon of systems of oppression is disconnect from the body. When we disconnect from the body, we disconnect from pleasure, and pleasure is an essential nutrient. The “cure” for burnout is about building up resources in and for your nervous system — and that requires, once again, turning toward our bodies. While our nervous system is definitely a “brain thing”, our entire bodies are enervated by this system. It also requires turning toward our communities and relationships . . . this is something we simply can't do for ourselves. LESSON: How (and why) to find pleasure in creating sound with your voice. Darshana Avila is nurturing a culture of Erotic Wholeness. As an internationally recognized speaker, coach and facilitator, Darshana supports women and couples in exploring and reshaping their relationships to intimacy, sex and eroticism. She created the Map to Erotic Wholeness to weave together a somatic, justice-oriented and relational style of guidance, rooted in nature-based and trauma-informed wisdom. Erotic Wholeness is a path to personal liberation in service to our collective sexual liberation. Darshana believes “we are erotic by nature.” Known for her grounded, candid and loving approach, Darshana meets people in some of the most tender parts of themselves. Her methods breakdown barriers, unlock a greater authenticity and enjoyment and provide a pathway to realize your innate erotic power. Combining the laboratory of her own life with extensive study and a decade of profound private practice experience, Darshana is dedicated to changing the way we talk, think, and act when it comes to sex and eroticism. Darshana has been interviewed by several groundbreaking podcasts, and can often be found sharing the stage with other experts and influencers on IG Live. In October 2021, she was featured on the Netflix Series: Sex, Love & goop.

Darshana's LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/darshana-thakker/ (https://www.linkedin.com/in/darshana-thakker/) In this episode, Scott interviewed Darshana Thakker, Architecture Director at BCG Platinion. Some key takeaways/thoughts from Darshana's point of view: Data can be the enabler to achieving your business goals but only if you actually tie your data work to your business strategy and goals. Speaking data jargon when talking to the business stakeholders makes it hard to actually communicate. Focus on speaking to business outcomes and business value. When selecting your first use case(s) for data mesh, evaluate domains on four different metrics: business value, capabilities, eagerness, and feasibility. There isn't a golden formula but it's likely some domains/use cases will rise to the top pretty quickly. Look to - as best as you can - quantify the incremental business value from something like data mesh. That can be at the micro level - the single use case - or the macro level. But getting specific instead of "let's be data-driven" will lead to better buy-in and partnering with the business side. You need to prepare to evolve your architecture. You can't have things set in stone. But you also can't just throw things against the wall and see what sticks. You need a balance between overly rigid and overly flexible. If your centralized data function isn't a bottleneck, isn't the cause of your data challenges, data mesh probably isn't right for your organization - or at least it doesn't directly address your challenges. Time between identifying useful data and making it reliably available is a good place to look to measure if the centralized team is your bottleneck. A good buy-in driving question for data mesh - or any data initiative - is "what's the cost of doing nothing?" Will you miss opportunities? Lose market share? How much are you "paying" on your existing tech debt? If we don't move, what is the cost to our future business prospects? When looking at buy-in, you need to drive from the top down - so you can actually make necessary large-scale org-wide changes - and bottom up - so you are working well with the people doing the actual implementations. Data mesh feels a lot like the Agile movement in that people expect it to be a silver bullet instead of a framework for thinking - and re-thinking - about how you approach your work. As also recommended by previous guests, look to a vertical thin slice for your data mesh MVP. Make sure you include all necessary...

Yuval Noah Harari is an Israeli historian whose books have been major bestsellers, praised by Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, and Barack Obama. Harari not only offers a sweeping chronicle of the human past, but makes confident predictions about the human future. His visions of a future in which technology creates godlike humans has turned him into a kind of prophet, especially in Silicon Valley, though Harari insists he is a mere objective chronicler. Darshana Narayanan is a neuroscientist and journalist whose Current Affairs article "The Dangerous Populist Science of Yuval Noah Harari," available in our March-April 2022 issue, shows that Harari's claim to broad-ranging expertise is dubious and the stories he tell often lack sufficient factual foundation. Narayanan argues that belief in these unsupported prophecies is dangerous and experts need to do a better job of spreading the true findings of their academic fields so that populist pseudoscientists don't become our go-to explainers of reality. Today, Darshana joins to discuss her article and Harari's work. We talk about:Why deterministic visions of the human future are both wrong and harmful, because they inhibit our sense of the possibleHow many of Harari's statements become meaningless upon scrutiny, such has the idea that lions are more "self-confident" than humansThe comparison between Harari and Jordan Peterson, both of whom fill a void where a true culture of public intellectualism should be (the Jordan Peterson article can be read here)How experts are strangely resistant to critiquing and engaging with "popular" books, meaning those books don't get rigorously fact-checked or refutedThe Sapiens diagram explaining the "economic history of the world" that Nathan makes fun of during this episode looks like this:

One of the hottest topics affecting many school districts across the country is a sweeping trend of implementing DEI into the staff development and training rigor for teachers that, in turn, incorporate these concepts into teaching materials and program development. While many parents support the social and moral values that DEI represents, other parents believe such program content is an infringement on their parental rights and that such discussions should be reserved to them. Joining us in this episode is the co-founder and leader of the Eanes for Equity parental group here in Westlake, Darshana Kalikstein. Darshana joins Aaron Silva for a candid and thoughtful discussion on why E4E parents support these initiatives.
