On this episode, Kirk sits down for a conversation with composer, singer, and music technologist Imogen Heap. The two talk about the creative process, live performance in the pandemic age, the shifting relationship between artist and audience, the process of developing new music technology, several of Heap's ambitious musical projects, and of course, her song "Hide and Seek," which was the subject of an episode of Strong Songs earlier this year.REFERENCED ON THIS EPISODE:Imogen Heap's App, home of the "Heapsters": https://imogenheap.app/The Mi.Mu Gloves: https://mimugloves.com/“Promo” by Tim Exile live for BBC Radio 1: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5SVhGg5UV8Tim Exile's "Endless" app: https://endlesss.fm/“Last Night of an Empire” by Imogen Heap, 2020“First Train Home” performed by Imogen Heap in her Kitchen: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5nU5O2wygE&t=1269s“Daylight Robbery” and “Hide and Seek” by Imogen Heap from Speak For Yourself, 2004“The Listening Chair” and “You Know Where to Find Me” by Imogen Heap from Sparks, 2014E.L. Imogen Heap has to put her daughter to bed, then she can talk about what she’s been working on. She can tell you about her latest single, “Last Night Of An Empire” which she released on December 9th. Coincidentally, that’s also the day she launched The Creative Passport, a verified digital ID for Music Makers. In fact, December 9 has always been an auspicious day for her. It’s her birthday and “everything is just a little more special on that day”. While her daughter sings herself to sleep in the next room, Imogen talks about creating the Mi.Mu Gloves that she invented for her own performances before developing them for commercial use. “They are the world's most advanced wearable musical instrument, for expressive creation, composition and performance.” As the night unfolds, she’ll tell you about her app (ImogenHeap.app) where she connects regularly and directly with her fans (self proclaimed “Heapsters”), sharing song demos, weekly live stream concerts, works in progress, and casual conversations about herself and her life. She’ll explain that she’s building her own artificially intelligent bot called Augmented Imogen. She’ll remind you that she also owns a recording and performance facility called The Hideway built in an 18th century house in East London, which you can visit any time via an Oculus compatible virtual reality tour. That sums her up: she’s a traditionalist in some ways, she plays instruments, writes melodies, and cares about the creative craft. But at the same time she’s a futurist, constantly looking for new areas of technology and distribution to explore. Even though it’s now close to 11pm where she is in England, and you’ve been talking for nearly 2 hours, she’ll gladly relive some of the major moments in her storied career “I’ve just done so many random things,” she says. Like making her first record I Megaphone when she was a teenager; forming Frou Frou with Guy Sigsworth and their unlikely post-factum success; writing the song “Hide and Seek” and being a witness to its many lives; working with Taylor Swift and with Jeff Beck; and composing the music for Harry Potter and the Cursed Child which opened in the West End before moving to Broadway. Imogen has the kind of dizzying energy that truly creative people possess. She’s ready to build the team, to engage with the crowd, to share the experience. But first she just has to put her daughter to sleep. www.third-story.com www.patreon.com/thirdstorypodcast www.imogenheap.app

Talking Through How It’s Gotta Be On this episode of The Walking Dead Talk Through, we discuss Season 8, Episode 8 of The Walking Dead, the mid-season finale, which is titled How It’s Gotta Be. For this episode, I am joined by returning guest hosts Ben Beck, co-creator of the Next Level Network and co-host of the DC Prime Time and Next Level Showcast podcasts, and frequent feedback contributor Lara! I think you’ll agree that, yet again, both guest hosts did a fantastic job discussing the mid-season finale! We were warned by AMC that we would be shocked by something that would happen at the end of the episode, and most of us were, although that wasn’t our primary emotion. On the Facebook group, the majority of respondents in our poll were feeling sad after this episode, many were confused, some mad, some were indifferent, amazed and even happy and a few of us were all of the above. I felt many emotions about it, which I share in the episode. STOP READING IF YOU HAVEN’T SEEN THE EPISODE!!! Initially, I LOVED this episode, but after repeat viewings and thinking about the episode more, some of that love has faded. This episode has a lot of plot holes, some things I did not like, and some real head-scratchers. I’m more positive than many, but I can’t help but criticize this episode, and much of the season so far. I still love the show, but I can’t help but wonder what I would have done differently if I had my writing cap on, and I think a lot of people are there with me. In this episode, we learn that the Saviors were able to escape the Sanctuary. They attack Alexandria, The Kingdom and the leaders of The Hilltop. I believe Maggie and the group were heading to The Sanctuary relatively simultaneously. It completely changed the course of the war. I didn’t get into it too much during the recording, but exactly how many Saviors are there? The “AHK” or like I say in the podcast, “HAK” (for Hilltop, Alexandria and The Kingdom) wiped out all three outposts. Well, the Saviors don’t know The Hilltop has 38 POW’s, but they are effectively out of the war for now. Yet, it seems that The Sanctuary STILL has enough “Negans” to take over all three at the same time! How? And how quickly did they come up with this plan? Burying the lead… OK, I’m burying the lead. We learn that Carl has been bitten, and in a place that can’t be amputated. Both by going back and re-watching the episode more than once, and by listening to showrunner Scott M. Gimple on Talking Dead, he was bitten while helping Siddiq “release souls” in S8E6, which is something that was mentioned during our episode 69 as a possibility. I am sad to see the character go, but the show has always done well when departing from the comic book. The imminent death of Carl, which will probably happen next episode, will pull the story in new directions and not follow the comic book. We can only hope things get better. Ratings are up! How It’s Gotta Be got a 3.36 in the 18-49 demographic, with 7.885 million viewers, up from 3.28 and 7.468 million that S8E7 Time For After got last week.

Dave (Super Movie Bros podcast) and Lauren recap this week's The Walking Dead S8x08 entitled "How's It Gotta Be". The Heapsters abandon Rick. The Saviors retaliate against Rick and his allies for Daryl's attack on the Sanctuary. Karl wants to keep everyone alive and stop the fighting. Rick has a long awaiting albeit brief showdown with Negan. And the fate of a major character is sealed. Lauren and Dave also discuss the characters as they continue to develop throughout the season, rate and review the episode, and compare the events of the comics to the events in the show. Talking Through The King, The Widow, and Rick On this episode of The Walking Dead Talk Through, we discuss Season 8, Episode 6 of The Walking Dead, which is titled The King, the Widow and Rick. For this episode, I am joined by guest hosts Reese Nicole Brown of The Introverted Nerd Watches, who returns a second time after recently appearing as a guest host for S8E1 Mercy, and Steve Brown, no relation! Both guest hosts did a fantastic job discussing this episode! The King, the Widow, and Rick is a Misleading Title! The title of this episode, The King, the Widow, and Rick, is very misleading. Although there was a fair bit of Maggie in this episode, we see very little of King Ezekiel and only a little of Rick. Unfortunately, we also saw a lot more of the Trash People than we bargained for! Ewww!!!!!!!!!!! Isn’t it about the characters? One thing that I neglected to mention during the recording was that The Walking Dead often has problems when its characters behave in a way against their personalities, and possibly against logic, in order to service the plot. e.g. Character A has to do this to make plot point 1 work, and Character B has to do that to make plot point 2 work, despite both actions are out of character. Unfortunately, we had a ton of that in this episode. Stories work best when the plot comes out organically from the characters, not the other way around. Ratings are up The King, The Widow, and Rick got a 3.57 in the 18-49 demographic with 8.282 million viewers, which is up from last week‘s 3.42 and 7.845 million viewers. Stay tuned for the TWD/FTWD Crossover coverage next episode! Please note that we will not be covering the crossover announcement this episode. Instead, will be releasing a separate episode of Fear the Walking Dead Talk Through on Saturday, covering the crossover, where the three of us are joined by my Fear co-host, Kyle McAdams!!! Our feedback deadline will be a day early next week, so please leave your feedback by 6 pm Eastern/5 Central on Monday, Dec. 4th for S8E7, titled “Time for After“.
