The Buddies find themselves back in Tolkien's Middle Earth, this time watching The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. Let's just say this wasn't the Buddies favorite movie. They discuss the differences between The Hobbit book versus movie, argue about throwing money at problems, food meaning, fully stocked pantries, and much more. Are you in need of a cathartic experience after watching the movie or maybe you are just looking for advice on dealing with a large goiter, either way you've come to the right place.Intro: (0:00-1:40) Stock Up/Down (1:41-23:36) Favorite Scene (23:37-25:13) Love/Hate (25:14-36:09)Book vs Movie (36:10-38:24)Review/Conclusion (38:25-41:43)Next Book: FOUNDATION by ISAAC ASIMOVNext Movie: THE GRAY MAN

Three members of this podcast did not like the Hobbit Movies. We hated it in fact, and we've waited a long while to tell the world why in our own unique way. We love GREATness, but today we explore it's opposite through a series we set of movies that didn't do a beloved book the justice it deserved. Peter Jackson admitted he didn't know what he was doing when he filmed The Hobbit trilogy, and it shows. Here are some of the key things I think the movies got wrong.
Discussion of The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies [Extended Edition] Join Maggie and Cam for two hours of praising Martin Freeman. This episode explores Peter Jackson’s final Middle-earth movie and its unexpectedly strong acts of interpretation. We discuss the fascinating deviations of tone, scope, and character in this film, including Gandalf’s knowledge of Bilbo’s Ring, the surreal representation of Thorin’s inner turmoil, and Tauriel’s contagious love story. Dwarves finally get some real character development in this version of the story, and Maggie suggests that Bilbo’s big moment is different here. Cam offers theories about bridges, both literal and narrative, and the importance of legacy to Tolkien’s villains. We also celebrate the goats, sheep, pigs, and moose-deer-elk in this glorious film. And Bofur comes back. During our Second Breakfast, Maggie asks some provocative questions about emotional manipulation, artistic intent, and creative responsibility – inspired by A Little Life, This Is Us, and The Haunting of Hill House. Discussion of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug [Extended Edition] Join Maggie and Cam in this special episode, where they question the narrative implications of having Benedict Cumberbatch voice every character in the movie. We discuss the nature of evil and the strange, incestuous relationship between Smaug, Sauron, and the Necromancer. This episode also explores the parallels between the Ring and the Arkenstone, as well as the many callbacks within this movie and the series so far. We also try to figure out who the real villain of the prequel trilogy is - Smaug or Azog? In the face of Maggie's lukewarm reaction to the movie, Cam mounts a spirited defense of it as his favorite Middle-earth film. During our Second Breakfast, we discuss adaptation and disappointment through the lens of the post-Sorkin years of The West Wing, and Maggie reflects on this year's Reading Rush. Discussion of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (Extended Edition) Join Maggie and Cam in this special episode exploring the 2012 movie adaptation of The Hobbit. This film covers the first six chapters of the book. Cam and Maggie discuss the film's production history and analyze it as its own work, before digging into the many interesting deviations and creations in this adaptation. This episode explores the expanded prologue and the film's relationship with the larger LOTR universe. We also reflect on the screen representations of Gandalf and Bilbo as they compare to their book counterparts. Later on, we debate whether or not the songs work better in a movie, but we agree that the eagles are still weird. Gollum's eyes are the wrong color. After 2 episodes of negativity we thought it would be refreshing to touch on what we actually LIKED about the Hobbit trilogy. We get so lost in the hate that we often forget there was SOME pretty cool stuff too. It is in Tolkien's universe after all. Listen in and nerd out with us!
While preparing for episode 2, we realized how many things we wanted to... critique, and became very frustrated. We should probably have sufficiently covered the topic in 1 episode, at least, as far as our audience is concerned. But we decided, eh, what the hell, LET'S MAKE IT 3 EPISODES! Because why the hell not, right Peter Jackson?
For our pilot we wanted to start with something simple, why the Hobbit movie trilogy SUCKS. Tune in for Part 1 of a multi episode critique as we rip the Hobbit trilogy a new one.

As the latest Warner Bros fantasy blockbuster, The Hobbit, hits the cinema screens, Dr Alison Milbank of the University's Department of Theology and Religious Studies, offers her insights into J.R.R.Tolkien and his famous novel. The film based on the adventures of Hobbit Bilbo Baggins and his dwarf companions will, she says, fulfil deeper needs in modern society than pure entertainment.

Heavier on the Hobbit Movie news...Following a link from KillerMovies.com: Ian McKellan Talks "The Hobbit" in an interview with iFMagazine.com.Question: Can you have a Ring Saga movie without Sir Ian?Answer: Of course not! He IS Gandalf. From iStockAnalyst.com - The Powers of Good and Evil Collide as The Lord of the Rings: Conquest Raids Retailers Worldwide. Now if Electronic Arts Inc. would like to send me the game along with a PS3 console (We are Playstation folk at the Kaiser Haus) I'd be more than happy to review and love it.Andy Serkis on The Hobbit in an article posted at ComingSoon.net. The same question and answer found above naturally applies... just substitute Gollum for Gandalf.TheOneRing.net Exclusive: Monaghan is interested in "the Hobbit" film. Of course he is! And I for one hope that they can place the whole lot of young Hobbits within the frame work of the movies. Even a small cameo would suffice... right at the end of the THIRD film.
