Check out Cam's latest novel / audio drama here! In this time traveling episode of Second Breakfast, we're finally tackling the godfather of the slasher genre, John Carpenter's Halloween. We start with a simple question: why is this the best slasher movie? The answer involves gestural structure and a paradoxical approach to pacing. We also get into a spirited debate about the mysterious motive of our beloved Michael Myers. Is he supernatural? Are his crimes random? What roles do sexuality and cultural puritanism play in this story? Finally, we revisit some of the best analysis of the film that we've done over the past five (!) years. Once again, Jon was joined by many members of the community at breakfast on Saturday at Con of the Rings. First, our old buddy Chad sits down with Chris and Jon to recap the first day of the Con. Then, some familiar voices and new friends sit down to share bad beats, narrow escapes, and ridiculous jank. There's poetry, there's marriage advice, there's...well, you see the thumbnail. Thanks again to all of our Patrons who make this possible!

Check out Cam's latest novel / audio drama here! We have been itching to do this episode FOREVER, and it's finally here! Is the Big Mac a work of art? We explore this provocative question and the million questions that follow. In the same way that a painting exists in a museum, and a movie in a theater, where does the Big Mac exist? When is it a work of art — when it's being made, when it was designed, or when you're actually eating it? Things get even more tricky from there: who made the Big Mac, both literally and functionally? Has this one immaculate burger transcended the bounds of trademark and copyright to occupy the same cultural space as the American flag or the Statue of Liberty? Join us for this bucket list breakdown of that most special of burgers, all the way from the special sauce to the sesame seed bun, on this very special episode of Second Breakfast with Cam & Maggie. During our Second Breakfast service this Sunday, Jess shared a poem by Padraig O'Tuama and an excerpt from an essay by Ross Gay, and then we took some time to gather around our tables to share our joys, our sorrows, and our hopes together. Check out Cam's latest novel / audio drama here! The fire and ice cross pollination continues this week. Daenerys gets her first Macbeth theory, we reconsider the rules of Targaryen checkpoints, and an uncomfortable but unmistakable line from The Lord of the Rings leads us to entirely reevaluate Dany. Stay after the credits for an old school classic “Second Breakfast” segment, where we discuss our experience at the Candlelight Rings & Dragons concert. Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme! January is Second Breakfast month where we call we're allowed a mulligan on a previously mandated movie that didn't turn out so good. While we both enjoyed Keleigh's recent Artsy Fartsy pic of The Green Knight, she thought she could squeeze a bit more artsy out of the fartsy and mandated we watch 2001: A Space Odyssey, a film, unlike The Green Knight, is one we both, shamefully, had never seen. But now we have and because we're both super smart little cookies, we understood everything that happened in the movie! 0:00 - Trivial Trivia 18:24- 2001: A Space Odyssey review 1:03:37- Next episode's mandated movie We'll be back in two weeks with another mandated movie. If you'd like to watch it, click here to find where it's streaming or available to rent. If you'd like to watch the video version of Movie Mandates, you can do so on YouTube. Alternatively, you can listen to and audio-only version on iTunes. New episodes of Movie Mandates drop on the first and third Wednesday of every month! Check out Cam's latest novel / audio drama here! The stars have alighted in this very special episode of Second Breakfast as we accidentally work together to form one massive theory about the avalanche of echoes crushing poor Ned Stark. After we catalogue these eerie similarities, we ask the more important question: so what? What is the point of all these dozens of distillation echoes? The answer takes us to a shockingly simple and powerful place. LINKS: Patreon, YouTube, Spotify, Instagram Feedback & Theories: secondbreakfastpod@gmail.com
Welcome to Movie Mandates, a review show in which sibling cinephiles Andrew and Keleigh force each other to watch movies according to a monthly theme! January is the time for Second Breakfast where we call a do-over on one of our mandated movies and try another. For "Shoulda Seen This By Now" month back in October, I mandated the original Attack of the 50 Foot Woman. I shouldn't have. It was awful. So, I'm taking another crack at the theme with another movie I shoulda seen by now, The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas. All I know is that it's got Dolly Parton in it and that's good enough for me because Dolly's awesome! 0:00 - Trivial Trivia 13:12 - The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas review 1:03:25 - Next episode's mandated movie We'll be back in two weeks with another mandated movie. Check out Cam's latest novel / audio drama here! This is the episode we've been waiting to do since the very beginning of Second Breakfast. The Witch is our favorite film of all time, and today we're going to dig deep and find out why. Spoiler alert: it's a magical medley of the power of suggestion, curveball slasher structure, mutually assured destruction, and a beautifully binary / reversible theology. Come for the cavalcade of theological grindstones, fresh observations, and echoes from throughout Robert Eggers' legendary filmography, stay for Maggie's absolutely blockbuster theory about the shattering of the ten commandments. And yes, there's a little Doctor Faustus thrown in for good measure, alongside some rumination on The Godfather and The Exorcist. It's Second Breakfast time again! First up, Jon is joined by Chris and Chad for a little on-air hangout (Rings of Power spoilers 14:20-22:10 if you haven't seen S2E8). Next, Sabina and Dominic drop by for their annual visit (the kids, they keep growing!), followed by friend of the show Autumn and newcomer Spencer. Then we've got the 3-headed-dragon meme of Doug, Kyle, and Splice - you decide which is which part of the meme. Finally, Chris (there are a lot of them) and Craig stop in to wrap us up. Thanks to the Freemen of the North for hosting Con of the Rings, and thanks to our amazing Patrons for making the show possible. Enjoy this one on us!
