This week on International Feature, we took a trip back to one of the most talked-about holiday rom-coms of all time: Love Actually. Often held up as a seasonal classic, the film has remained a staple of Christmas viewing for years — but for us, revisiting it raised a lot more questions than warm fuzzy feelings. We dug into why the movie's reputation doesn't match our experience, and how some of its most celebrated moments have aged… poorly.• Only really connecting with one or two of the relationship dynamics presented • Our genuine disbelief that this is considered a romantic comedy “classic” • The blatant fatphobia and the way several characters are mistreated for laughs • The uncomfortable and inappropriate dynamic between Keira Knightley and Andrew Lincoln's character • Too many characters, too little depth, and barely enough time spent with any storyline • The randomness of certain casting choices — and how Martin Freeman ends up in movies like this • Why ensemble rom-coms just don't work for us when the emotional payoff isn't thereA holiday staple for some… but for us, this was more frustrating than festiveLetterbox'd Synopsis: Eight very different couples deal with their love lives in various loosely interrelated tales all set during a frantic month before Christmas in London.
We are joined this week by author, screen writer, and friend of the show, Briana Cox to talk about Ryan Coogler's endeavors under the banner of the Marvel Cinematic universe: Black Panther 1 and 2. Both movies feature Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong'o, Danai Gurira, Angela Bassett, Forest Whitaker, Letitia Wright, Martin Freeman, among many others. Looking back we discuss the impact the first film had on the culture, our love/hate relationship with the first film and the failures of the second, how both movies sugar coat the CIA's history of violating the sovereignty of African nations, and one of the most important thing the movies did was open mainstream audiences to the beauty of Afrofuturism. To check out some of the works mentioned during the episode, follow these links:Born in FlamesSpace is the PlaceNaked RealityBeasts of the Southern WildSpider-Man: Into the Spider-VerseSpider-Man: Across the Spider-VerseInto the Mother Lands: An Afrofuturist TTRPGGuest LinksOfficial WebsitePreorder Indigent!Briana on InstagramBriana on ThreadsLeft of the Projector LinksOfficial WebsiteLeft of the Projector on InstagramLeft of the Projector on PatreonLeft of the Projector on ThreadlessHost LinksEvan's LetterboxdBill's InstagramBill's LetterboxdWard's...

Martin Freeman is one of the most sought-after actors of his generation. Whether it's Tim in The Office, John - the mild-mannered porn actor in Love Actually, Watson in Sherlock, Bilbo in The Hobbit, the stressed parent in Breeders, the Liverpudlian cop with personal problems in The Responder and Everett K. Ross in Marvel Cinematic Universe smash hits Captain America and Black Panther - Freeman is a star, and to date has won two Emmys and a BAFTA. In this episode, Martin reflects on his childhood as the youngest of five (comparatively modest when you consider his mother was one of fourteen!) as well as the lasting impact of losing his father at ten years old. We talk about parenting, the people who've inspired him (hello, Michael Caine), the future of AI from a technophobe's perspective, his unease with fame and the quieter failures that sit behind public success. Plus: strap yourself in for much hilarity. I don't think I can remember a guest who made me laugh QUITE this much. Martin can next be seen as the determined Superintendent Battle in Netflix's new Agatha Christie adaptation, Seven Dials. ✨ IN THIS EPISODE: 00:00 Introduction 02:22 Dealing with Fame and Anxiety 05:12 The Everyman Label 07:35 Exploring Anger and Authenticity 16:28 Academic Struggles and Early Acting 20:33 Personal Reflections and Family 28:08 Comparing to Heroes 32:15 The Office and Sherlock 40:29 Technology Struggles 44:20 AI Concerns 47:47 Meeting Michael Caine
Parents of under-fives in England are to be offered official advice on how long their children should spend watching TV or looking at computer screens. It comes as government research shows about 98% of children under two were watching screens on a daily basis - with parents, teachers and nursery staff saying youngsters were finding it harder to hold conversations or concentrate on learning. To discuss this further Nuala McGovern is joined by Kate Silverton, child counsellor and parenting author, and Professor Sonia Livingstone from the London School of Economics and author of Parenting for a Digital Future. In 2025 alone she walked at Paris Fashion Week, spoke at the United Nations about face equality and won 'Fashion and beauty influencer of the year' at the the UK and Ireland TikTok awards, all while managing a chronic illness. Comfort food and a bottomless snack bag for our season finale. Helena Bonham Carter is an award-winning English actress known for her incredible performances across films including the Harry Potter movies, Howards End, Planet of the Apes, Sweeney Todd, The King's Speech and TV series such as Toast and The Crown. There are certainly too many credits to mention for a star who made her debut in 1985 in A Room with a View. She's with us to talk about her latest role as Lady Caterham in Agatha Christie's Seven Dials, which starts streaming on Netflix from 15 January. This is her first time in a Queen of Crime adaptation, with co-stars including Mia McKenna-Bruce and former Dish guest, Martin Freeman. Helena comes equipped with her sizeable snack bag, curated especially for her life on-set, but there's still room for Dish's first cheese toasties, featuring five different cheeses. The cheese toasties with sticky shallots are paired with the Loved & Found Feteasca Alba Brut, which sadly is no longer available to buy. The Waitrose wine experts have since lined up the perfect replacement; a glass of Valdo Elevantum Prosecco. For this episode, Nick, Angela and Helena also enjoy a Mother Root and tonic, alongside the many, many other beverages that make it on to the table. From the perilous times on the set of Seven Dials to helping Helena overcome her rice intimidation, we finish up season 8 of Dish with a hearty serving of good company. There's a short break now before we return in February for more. Til next time! You can watch full episodes of Dish on YouTube and, new for this season, on Spotify. BBC Bitesize has launched a new series for schools tackling the problem, after new research with more than 400 teachers highlighted their growing concern about teenagers' relationship with online content. It shows most teachers believe critical thinking is now the most essential skill for young people, yet only a third feel able to teach it. A monster trio of shows from Netflix this week plus a disaster movie and the return of an Aussie classic.Andrew Mercado and James Manning choose different Shows of the Week but are pretty united on one of the others. Reviewed this week:Monster: The Ed Gein StoryThe House of GuinnessWaywardplusThe Lost BusRFDS Monster: The Ed Gein Story (Netflix, 8 episodes)First Jeffrey Dahmer. Then The Menendez Brothers. And now, Ed Gein. Could Ryan Murphy’s Netflix universe get any sicker?Murphy’s latest monster instalment certainly lives up to the franchise title. The Ed Gein instalment of Monster is set in the 1950s, and Ed Gein (played by Charlie Hunnam) is haunting the frozen fields of rural Wisconsin, killing and desecrating the bodies of multiple women. His crimes went on to inspire multiple classic horror films, including The Silence of the Lambs, Psycho, and The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. If you watch it with someone else make sure they are broadminded. And be prepared to see a TV Gold favourite, Lesley Manville, as you’ve never seen her before! The House of Guinness (Netflix, 8 episodes) A historical drama created by Steven Knight, inspired by the true story of the powerful Guinness brewing family in 19th-century Dublin, following their four adult children after their patriarch, Sir Benjamin Guinness, dies in 1868. The series explores the family's struggles to maintain their brewing empire, their relationships with each other, and their involvement in the politics and social dynamics of the time. Brilliant cast led by James Norton, Louis Partridge and the wonderful Emily Fairn who we loved in The Responder alongside Martin Freeman. Wayward (Netflix, 8 episodes) A small-town cop Alex (Mae Martin) and two teenage girls, Abbie (Sydney Topliffe) and Leila (Alyvia Alyn Lind), uncover the dark secrets of a mysterious "troubled teen" academy in the picturesque town of Tall Pines. As Alex investigates the unsettling school, he works with the girls to expose its leader, Evelyn (Toni Collette). Some musicians do better with chaos. Others under deadlines and with teams. Tristan Clopet is a rare pro who's done both, and because of it knows the value of working towards a greater goal with a big team (and bigger pressure).Tristan's prolific work on film and TV scores gives him a deep insight into the nature of that side of the industry (and how different it is from his touring days supporting X Ambassadors, Billy Bragg, Tove Lo, Glen Hansard, and The Weeknd). It's a collaborative, deadline-oriented, large effort, with hundreds of creatives contributing to the final work. He shares how inspiring that journey is, and how knowing the boundaries can unlock even more creativity. I loved his story about scoring to Martin Freeman's solo acting in a car. (Martin Freeman happens to be one of my favorite actors.)His credits include:Sony Pictures Television's StartUp, created by Ben Ketai and starring Martin Freeman, Ron Perlman, Adam Brody, Mira Sorvino, and Edi Gathegi. Matt and Luke hop abroad the TV Time Machine to look at the TV landscape of August 2000. He will soon have so many TV shows to his name and swimming pools full of money, but in August of 2000, Ryan Murphy debuted his first show on the teen skewing network The WB. The show, Popular, is a teen comedy with a strange mix of tones but some DNA of Glee, the show that made him a household name and a titan in the industry. Next, sketch comedy TV to Go, a sketch series billed as a show 'to skewer the annoyances of everyday life.' The forgotten series, featured Martin Freeman and Hugh Dennis, but unsurprisingly, the standouts are Sean Lock and Bill Bailey. Then, a show that would become a megahit, as Anne Robinson dons a cape for a new quiz show that would become a global hit in The Weakest Link. Finally, there's Scottish drama Tinsel Town, which is a hard show to pin down.

With an outrageous body count and a razor-sharp script, it's a love letter to action movies — by way of twee English village life.Directed by Edgar Wright and written by Wright and Simon Pegg, Hot Fuzz stars Simon Pegg as Nicholas Angel, a no-nonsense London supercop who's so good at his job that he's making everyone else look bad. As a result, he's reassigned to the sleepy village of Sandford, where crime seems suspiciously low — and the residents suspiciously Stepford.Teamed up with the bumbling but big-hearted PC Danny Butterman (Nick Frost), Angel initially struggles with Sandford's slower pace — until a series of grisly “accidents” reveals something darker lurking beneath the surface. Cue a rampage of pensioners, hidden agendas, and a spectacular finale with more gunfire than the M25 at rush hour. This is one we could all agree on: Hot Fuzz is a near-perfect comedy that rewards repeat viewings. It's cleverly constructed, endlessly quotable (“The greater good!”), and absolutely packed with details that make it a joy to dissect. Whether you're a fan of action movies, British humour, or seeing Timothy Dalton with a smug smile and a hedge trimmer, there's something here for you.Hot Fuzz takes the quiet menace of rural England and sets it ablaze with blockbuster spectacle and sharp comedy. It's both homage and original, firing on all cylinders from start to finish. If you like your action with a side of Bakewell tart and local shop for local people energy, this one's a must-watch.

Case and Sam are looking back at the earliest episodes of the show! Check out their thoughts on the seventeenth episode when Case sat down with Ben Milton and Addy Thomas and chatted about The Hobbit Trilogy! Overview In the latest Podcast Discussion meeting, hosts Case and Sam explored a meta-review of their previous episode on The Hobbit trilogy, originally recorded after their first year of podcasting. The discussion began with an overview of the original episode, highlighting a consensus that three films were excessive for the source material. They praised Martin Freeman's casting as Bilbo while critiquing Peter Jackson for trying to align the film's style with The Lord of the Rings, particularly noting that the addition of the villain Azog was unnecessary. They also pointed out issues with character design and narrative structure, suggesting a two-film adaptation could have better captured character arcs and pacing, particularly with scenes involving Smaug. The Battle of Five Armies was identified as the weakest film, marred by excessive padding and a lack of personal stakes compared to earlier battles in the franchise. The hosts expressed the importance of subtlety in fan service and connections to The Lord of the Rings while reflecting on their own views from the initial episode. They concluded by sharing their love for film and announced upcoming episodes focused on Captain America and Alien Resurrection, while encouraging listener engagement through their Discord server. Notes Introduction and Episode Context (00:00 - 09:47) Case and Sam introduce this meta-episode reviewing a previous podcast about The Hobbit trilogy The original episode featured Case, Ben, and Addie discussing at 'CPOV Studios' They note this was recorded after completing the first year of the podcast Main critique established immediately: three movies was far too many for The Hobbit source material The hosts mention they didn't rewatch the entire trilogy for this meta-review Initial Critique of The Hobbit Films (09:48 - 19:09) The hosts praise Martin Freeman's casting as Bilbo as a perfect choice that connects to Elijah Wood's Frodo They criticize Peter Jackson for trying to make The Hobbit fit the style and scale of Lord of the Rings The unnecessary villain Azog (the pale orc) is identified as a major problem They note Jackson used artificial narrative structures to create three separate arcs where the source material didn't support it Discussion of how Lord of the Rings doesn't rely on personified villains, but on evil as a force ️ Character and Design Issues (19:09 - 28:25) The hosts criticize the framing device that has Bilbo explaining the dwarven kingdom's history They argue Bilbo should be an uninformed viewpoint character discovering the world along with the audience The dwarves' inconsistent design is highlighted as problematic (either caricatures or just normal people) They discuss how the dwarves don't feel cohesive like in Lord of the Rings and lack distinct personalities Case praises the Gollum scenes as genuinely excellent despite other issues ️ Proposed Two-Movie Structure (28:25 - 37:07) Case suggests ending the first movie at Lake Town as a natural breaking point This would create a moment where Bilbo has a true choice to continue or turn back They discuss how this cut would make Bilbo's character arc work better for the first film The second film could focus on Thorin's character arc They criticize how the actual film cuts (especially the Desolation of Smaug ending) feel like TV cliffhangers Smaug and Pacing Issues (37:07 - 46:35) The hosts praise the actual Smaug and Bilbo conversation scenes They criticize the extended Smaug chase/forge scenes as unnecessary padding Discussion of how Jackson is good at bringing book scenes to life but struggles when expanding material They propose that the second movie should open with the dwarves finding the door to the Lonely Mountain They critique the narrative weight of many extended sequences that don't actually advance the story ️ Battle of Five Armies Criticisms (46:36 - 55:45) The Battle of Five Armies is identified as the weakest film with the most padding They argue the battle should have been the third act of a movie, not an entire film Discussion of how the battle needed to feel smaller and more personal than Lord of the Rings battles They appreciate the decision to make Bilbo more active in the battle than in the book The hosts criticize the 'video game' quality of action sequences like the barrel rider scene ️ Fan Service and Connections to Lord of the Rings (55:45 - 01:04:58) They discuss how Legolas' inclusion made sense for the first film but was forced in later films They appreciate seeing Saruman before his fall to evil The hosts criticize heavy-handed references to Lord of the Rings (like mentioning Aragorn/Strider) They note how forcing connections to the original trilogy hurt the story Discussion of the 'video game' quality of action sequences compared to Lord of the Rings Meta-Discussion of the Episode (01:04:58 - 01:15:51) Sam and Case reflect on the original episode, finding it thorough and well-argued Sam admits not rewatching the trilogy for this meta-review as it would be too time-consuming They reaffirm that the trilogy's main problem is its excessive length Sam praises the costumes while Case notes the 48 FPS format made everything look fake They discuss how watching the entire Middle-earth saga chronologically would be challenging Final Thoughts and Upcoming Episodes (01:15:51 - 01:32:34) Case reiterates that a good two-movie cut exists within the trilogy's footage They agree the first film is the most watchable of the three Both hosts express their love for the first Captain America film (their next episode topic) Sam mentions she didn't rewatch the Hobbit films as they would take 10+ hours They provide information about their Discord server and social media presence Upcoming podcast episodes announced: Alien Resurrection and Captain America: The First Avenger Action items Join and participate in the Discord server for further discussion (01:31:00)
We have Emmy & BAFTA winning actor Martin Freeman joining us for dinner this week! And he may have a filthier mind than me! In the midst of rehearsals for his new play, mum served up a delicious Ginger Pig lamb with an array of gorgeous sides for Martin. We heard all about his love of musicals (especially West Side Story), how he nearly became a professional squash player in his youth, how he gave up being a vegetarian after 25 years, what it's like being the youngest of 5 children, and we hear about the exciting new play he is starring in with Jack Lowden. We laughed throughout this whole episode, Martin was a total dream dinner party guest (even if he had given up puddings for lent!). Martin's show ‘The Fifth Step' opens at ‘@SohoPlace' on 12th May and runs through to the end of July. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Research continues to show that our appearance can say a lot about our personality and lifestyle. Let's find out what exactly your facial features can say about you. Psychologist and neuroscientist Dr. Keith Welker studied the facial structure of around 1,000 World Cup soccer players and found that a player's facial width-to-height ratio was closely connected to the number of goals he scored. The higher the number, the more competent a person is. Your wrinkles tell the story of your life. There are certain muscles that work every time you smile, cry, frown, or raise your brows. After some time, they get used to particular emotions and “draw” them on your face, making them visible even when your face is resting. There's a slight differentiation between genders when it comes to picking “the good side”. Women tend to turn to the camera with their left side. Researches believe that this is because the left part of our face is controlled by the right hemisphere of our brain, which is responsible for our emotions. That's why it seems way more attractive. In 2015 a group of scientists analyzed 123 selfies taken from Sina Weibo, a Chinese microblogging site sort of like Twitter. The researchers found a fascinating connection between types of selfies and people's personalities. Selfie takers with the infamous duck face and high angle tend to be neurotic. People who are friendlier and more open to new experiences tend to use the bottom-up approach while taking selfies. Have you ever noticed how identical twins start to look less and less alike as they get older? You can have the best genes ever, but the lifestyle you lead will still affect your appearance. A crease on your forehead between your eyebrows suggests a completely different story. -Engineers, mathematicians, and chemists usually pose with their right side to the camera, while art critics and psychologists prefer their left side. -People who are friendlier and more open to new experiences tend to use the bottom-up approach while taking selfies. -The bigger a person's nose, the more ambitious they are. -Your bad habits are slowly being imprinted right on your face. -Beautiful people might seem way friendlier than they really are. Book Vs. Movie: The Hound of the Baskervilles The 1902 Book vs. The 2012 BBC One ProductionThe Margos are concluding “Mysteries in May” with one of the greatest mystery writers of all time, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and his most famous creation, Sherlock Holmes. The Hound of the Baskervilles is the third of the four crime novels serialized in The Strand Magazine from August 1901 to April 1902. It follows Holmes and Watson as they investigate the legend of a fearsome, diabolical hound of supernatural origin. This was the first appearance of Holmes since his apparent death in "The Final Problem," and the success of "The Hound of the Baskervilles" led to the character's eventual revival. The 2012 version is from the BBC One program Sherlock and moves the story to the present day. When it was first broadcast, it received over 10 million viewers. Which did we (the Margos) prefer? Have a listen to find out.
