Thráin escapes the Balrog in Moria and establishes Erebor; Sara can't escape Alan and the PPP quite yet, despite her best efforts. Join The Man of the West and The Shieldmaiden of Rohan as we begin a five-part look at the Dwarves, starting with two episodes on Appendix A III to The Lord of the Rings on Durin's Folk. Durin the Deathless lived a very long time, but still managed to die - for now; the Balrog drives Durin's Folk out of Moria — there were people runnin' everywhere, tryin' to run from the destruction; and Azog signs his own death certificate: on Thráin's forehead. Alan and Sara wonder how new baby Durins are recognized, ask if cold drakes have air conditioning, and salute Azog for not using Comic Sans MS. Also, Nar the pirate dwarf from Somerset shows up. Case and Sam are looking back at the earliest episodes of the show! Check out their thoughts on the seventeenth episode when Case sat down with Ben Milton and Addy Thomas and chatted about The Hobbit Trilogy! Overview   In the latest Podcast Discussion meeting, hosts Case and Sam explored a meta-review of their previous episode on The Hobbit trilogy, originally recorded after their first year of podcasting. The discussion began with an overview of the original episode, highlighting a consensus that three films were excessive for the source material. They praised Martin Freeman's casting as Bilbo while critiquing Peter Jackson for trying to align the film's style with The Lord of the Rings, particularly noting that the addition of the villain Azog was unnecessary. They also pointed out issues with character design and narrative structure, suggesting a two-film adaptation could have better captured character arcs and pacing, particularly with scenes involving Smaug. The Battle of Five Armies was identified as the weakest film, marred by excessive padding and a lack of personal stakes compared to earlier battles in the franchise. The hosts expressed the importance of subtlety in fan service and connections to The Lord of the Rings while reflecting on their own views from the initial episode. They concluded by sharing their love for film and announced upcoming episodes focused on Captain America and Alien Resurrection, while encouraging listener engagement through their Discord server.   Notes Introduction and Episode Context (00:00 - 09:47) Case and Sam introduce this meta-episode reviewing a previous podcast about The Hobbit trilogy The original episode featured Case, Ben, and Addie discussing at 'CPOV Studios' They note this was recorded after completing the first year of the podcast Main critique established immediately: three movies was far too many for The Hobbit source material The hosts mention they didn't rewatch the entire trilogy for this meta-review Initial Critique of The Hobbit Films (09:48 - 19:09) The hosts praise Martin Freeman's casting as Bilbo as a perfect choice that connects to Elijah Wood's Frodo They criticize Peter Jackson for trying to make The Hobbit fit the style and scale of Lord of the Rings The unnecessary villain Azog (the pale orc) is identified as a major problem They note Jackson used artificial narrative structures to create three separate arcs where the source material didn't support it Discussion of how Lord of the Rings doesn't rely on personified villains, but on evil as a force ‍️ Character and Design Issues (19:09 - 28:25) The hosts criticize the framing device that has Bilbo explaining the dwarven kingdom's history They argue Bilbo should be an uninformed viewpoint character discovering the world along with the audience The dwarves' inconsistent design is highlighted as problematic (either caricatures or just normal people) They discuss how the dwarves don't feel cohesive like in Lord of the Rings and lack distinct personalities Case praises the Gollum scenes as genuinely excellent despite other issues ️ Proposed Two-Movie Structure (28:25 - 37:07) Case suggests ending the first movie at Lake Town as a natural breaking point This would create a moment where Bilbo has a true choice to continue or turn back They discuss how this cut would make Bilbo's character arc work better for the first film The second film could focus on Thorin's character arc They criticize how the actual film cuts (especially the Desolation of Smaug ending) feel like TV cliffhangers Smaug and Pacing Issues (37:07 - 46:35) The hosts praise the actual Smaug and Bilbo conversation scenes They criticize the extended Smaug chase/forge scenes as unnecessary padding Discussion of how Jackson is good at bringing book scenes to life but struggles when expanding material They propose that the second movie should open with the dwarves finding the door to the Lonely Mountain They critique the narrative weight of many extended sequences that don't actually advance the story ️ Battle of Five Armies Criticisms (46:36 - 55:45) The Battle of Five Armies is identified as the weakest film with the most padding They argue the battle should have been the third act of a movie, not an entire film Discussion of how the battle needed to feel smaller and more personal than Lord of the Rings battles They appreciate the decision to make Bilbo more active in the battle than in the book The hosts criticize the 'video game' quality of action sequences like the barrel rider scene ‍️ Fan Service and Connections to Lord of the Rings (55:45 - 01:04:58) They discuss how Legolas' inclusion made sense for the first film but was forced in later films They appreciate seeing Saruman before his fall to evil The hosts criticize heavy-handed references to Lord of the Rings (like mentioning Aragorn/Strider) They note how forcing connections to the original trilogy hurt the story Discussion of the 'video game' quality of action sequences compared to Lord of the Rings Meta-Discussion of the Episode (01:04:58 - 01:15:51) Sam and Case reflect on the original episode, finding it thorough and well-argued Sam admits not rewatching the trilogy for this meta-review as it would be too time-consuming They reaffirm that the trilogy's main problem is its excessive length Sam praises the costumes while Case notes the 48 FPS format made everything look fake They discuss how watching the entire Middle-earth saga chronologically would be challenging Final Thoughts and Upcoming Episodes (01:15:51 - 01:32:34) Case reiterates that a good two-movie cut exists within the trilogy's footage They agree the first film is the most watchable of the three Both hosts express their love for the first Captain America film (their next episode topic) Sam mentions she didn't rewatch the Hobbit films as they would take 10+ hours They provide information about their Discord server and social media presence Upcoming podcast episodes announced: Alien Resurrection and Captain America: The First Avenger Action items Join and participate in the Discord server for further discussion (01:31:00)

In this episode, Maverick and Philip St. Jean discuss the first movie in the Hobbit trilogy, 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.' They explore the differences between the book and the movie, the main character's role, and the fable-like aspects of the film. They also touch on the rating system and the opening scene. The conversation delves into the portrayal of Bilbo and Thorin, the Riddles in the Dark scene, and the overall plot structure. The conversation discusses the themes in the film 'The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey' and their execution. The themes of belonging, misjudgment, and the importance of home are explored, but the execution is criticized for being heavy-handed and lacking subtlety. The conversation also touches on the lack of character development for the dwarves and the questionable inclusion of side characters like Radagast. Overall, the film is seen as lacking lasting impact and not living up to the source material.----------Highlights:0:00 "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" Introduction4:53 Opening Scene12:17 Debating the Main Character20:42 Bilbo Joins the Fellowship24:35 Riddles in the Dark43:00 Blatant Theme-Mongering in Dialogue47:05 Questionable Inclusion of Azog as the Main Villain49:23 The Necromancer and the Battle of Dol Guldur55:33 Gandalf and the Pointless Inclusion of Radagast1:03:21 Lack of Character Development for the Dwarves1:09:37 Messages and Meaning Going Forward----------Show Notes:9 Points Rating System: https://www.alostplot.com/9-points/ Pans Labyrinth Review: https://www.podomatic.com/podcasts/maverick51411/episodes/2024-04-17T17_00_00-07_00#thehobbit #anunexpectedjourney #bilbobaggins #gollum #alostplot #podcasting #filmthoughts #frodobaggins #frodo #bilbo #jrrtolkien #sourcematerial #bookadaptation #adaptation #thorinoakenshield #thorin #erebor #smaug #necromancer #thelonleymountain

Jared, Oriana and Ned appear live in Portland at Passages Bookshop to celebrate fifty episodes of By-the-Bywater and to talk about Oriana's choice of topic: Peter Jackson's adaptation of The Hobbit. To say that there was almost immediate speculation about whether or when Jackson would also adapt The Hobbit following the smash critical and commercial success of his Lord of the Rings films is to understate; over the following years there were further lawsuits, broken agreements, studio questions, planned directorial choices that mysteriously fell through and more besides that seemed to indicate it would be the biggest case of developmental hell ever. But eventually the films did start coming out in a similar yearly pace starting in December 2012, and certainly earned a fair amount of cash. Yet to say that the films have had anywhere near the level of widespread love and cultural staying power than The Lord of the Rings films is to deny the fundamental truth of how poorly these films have aged on several levels, and the various resultant impacts since, up to and including a literal rewriting of a country's laws to accommodate the production. What were the core differences between the two sets of adaptations on a structural level, and how did that play out in comparative terms? What technical achievements were made much of in the run up to the films' release, and what impact did they actually have? How did what should be a core relationship between the characters of Thorin and Bilbo get set up as a near love story, and how was that all ultimately undercut in the final edits? Part two of our two-part exploration of Tolkien's appendices, this episode covers the rest of Appendix A as well as the entirety of Appendix B, C, D, E, and F. There are some fascinating revelations in these pages, as well as a whole lotta nothin' on many of the other pages. Hit and miss, as it were, but Cam has sifted through all of it and found the bright spots! Topics include the horrific, war-crime filled history of Durin and the dwarves' battles with Azog, the story of why and when Sauron created Black Speech, a whole host of updates about the fellowship's lives after LOTR, and then we take a goofy trip into the mind-numbing, pedantic world of Tolkien's linguistic annotations and clarifications that run like a funeral dirge through Appendix F.  Feedback & Theories: secondbreakfastpod@gmail.com Instagram & TikTok: @secondbreakfastpod

The trilogy is finally over and all this exposition feels like a dead dragon on our backs. The conclusion of The Hobbit ends less like a Battle of Five Armies and more like a long painful groan. Erin and Brennan magically fight of two orc armies, a swarm of battle bats, Earth-eaters, trolls, and wargs while successfully brokering a peace between men, elves, and dwarves with no idea how they did it. Do not speak to ME about following the source material, clearly Peter Jackson didn't! Erin is so frustrated with the battle of Dol Guldur and Brennan decides that Galadriel's witch form looks more like Old Greg's fish-wife than an all powerful being. The movie is so boring that our hosts even wrote their own subplot, the father-son bonding story of Azog the Defiler and Bolg: reuniting by tearing dwarves apart. Ultimately the best thing about this movie is that the trilogy is finally over. Wow, that was sad. So, who wants to watch Lord of the Rings?

Discussion of The Two Towers, Book Four, Chapter Eight Join Cam and Maggie for a chapter full of character-driven horror and a role-reversal villain introduction like we've never seen. Maggie reaches a conclusion about free will that somewhat bridges the gap between her original position and Cam's. Sméagol breaks through the Ring's death grip on him and Gollum long enough for us to wonder which one of them is really in charge, and if we could ever really know for sure. Cam attempts to define Frodo's heroism as it compares (unfavorably) to past Middle-earth heroes, and we parse the Witch King's introduction in those terms. This is another week full of twisted echoes / perversions of The Hobbit, and we think the Witch King is Frodo's Azog. Don't worry, it makes sense once we develop the idea. In our Second Breakfast, we return to the concept of “fantasy horror” that we stumbled upon during last week's discussion of Stephen King. Cam and Maggie work together to define the sub-genre and provide some examples (shout out to Brother Cinnamon) and then we explore the differences between horror and fantasy horror. This gets pretty dumb and silly, with Cam at one point earnestly presenting the argument “What if dragon bad?” Maggie steps in with a reasonable point about aesthetics, and then Cam mucks it all up again with a question about happy endings and speculative fiction that leads us to our greatest Game of Thrones hot take of all time. Lots of love, see you next week. Instagram: @secondbreakfastpod Feedback & Theories: secondbreakfastpod@gmail.com Illustrated YouTube clips channel: https://bit.ly/2OT6RP3

THE DOOMED & STONED SHOW ~Season 5, Episode 48~ We're smack dab in the middle of Halloween month, so The Doomed & Stoned Show is turning its attention to the reason for the season: horror! This episode takes a look at a relatively unknown disasterpiece: Gore-Met Zombie Chef From Hell (1986), with a colorful cast of characters including Goza, Blozor, Azog, and Lonezor! The plot is convoluted, but here's the gist: sometime in the Middle Ages, the evil Goza betrays the Sacred Order of the Righteous Brotherhood by killing the high priest and is cursed to live out the remainder of his life as a cannibal. Fast-forward to coastal Texas in the mid-'80s and Goza opens up a seafood restaurant with his henchman Blozor to lure hapless victims in to kill and cook. Isn't that nice? Well, not so much, because old man Azog, the twin brother of Goza, waits by the gates to warn visitors not to go inside! Meanwhile, ambitious high priest candidate Lonezor plans a showdown with Goza. "Your grandfather Thrór was killed, you remember, in the mines of Moria by Azog the Goblin." "Curse his name, yes..." This week we have a lost episode from the annals of Green Dragon history. Some say a clumsy messenger dropped the file on his way to the Prancing Pony, while others suspect a raiding Orc party snatched it while it was still uploading. Some poor, intoxicated fools claim it wasn't even recorded until last week! Perhaps we'll never know the truth... But regardless, it has been found! So join Kylie, Jeremy and David, as they discuss the true final army in our Muster series, Azog's Hunters!
