Each Wednesday, we discuss an older entertainment property, and currently, that's Lost. Happily for Catherine, the second part of the pilot was much less migraine-inducing than the first part. The castaways are likely not as happy, as they are dealing with mysterious monsters, mysterious fellow passengers, and mysterious raw fish dishes. As for parenting, we're giving Michael a pass for now, but he's going to need to step up his game.Next Wednesday, we'll discuss season 1, episode 3, "Tabula Rasa." We'll be back tomorrow with a roundup of some of our favorite segments from our recent Weekly Roundup format.
Each Thursday, join us for a weekly roundup that's an update on our most recent podcast format. We'll bring you a library find, an update from Terri on life or pop culture or whatever's on her mind, and a pick from our archives.Catherine's library find this week is a lushly illustrated children's picture book called Animalphabet by Julia Donaldson, with art by Sharon King-Chai, because there's always room for another animal alphabet book (especially when it's this beautiful). Mentioned: Some of Donaldson's other titles, Room on the Broom, The Gruffalo, and The Gruffalo's Child (all illustrated by Axel Scheffler). Terri's random recommendation is the exciting news that she has started a Substack newsletter! Find out more and subscribe: Too Old for Cool. It's free (although you're welcome to pay her if you'd like). In the archives, we revisit a classic from two years ago: Choosing Your Parenting Battles.Next week's lineup: A Gentleman in Moscow E2, "An Invitation," on Tuesday, July 16Lost S1 E2, "Pilot Part 2," on Wednesday, July 17Weekly roundup on Thursday, July 18Until then (and anytime you're in need), the archives are available.
Each Wednesday, we discuss an older entertainment property--something one or both of us has watched and wants to revisit, or something we missed the first time around. We're kicking it off with Lost, which premiered almost 20 years ago. Terri enjoyed it, in all its convoluted weirdness. Catherine hasn't seen it before, but is willing to risk migraines to find out more.Next Wednesday, we'll discuss season 1, episode 2, "Pilot Part 2." We'll be back tomorrow with a roundup of some of our favorite segments from our recent Weekly Roundup format.
On our latest weekly roundup, Catherine needed some tech support, and Terri needed to spend a lot of time following the latest Taylor-Travis news. Mentioned: The Senior Swifties Sideline. What we're watching: After watching the Ripley TV series, we decided to visit/revisit the 1999 movie, The Talented Mr. Ripley. Tom and co. are younger, in color, and more focused on music than visual art (no detours to the Italian Renaissance) in this version, but there's no cat! Mentioned: Purple Noon, a French movie adaptation of the story.Catherine's library find this week is a first novel that's gotten a lot of attention since it was published in 2022: Remarkably Bright Creatures by Shelby Van Pelt. It's a charming story with two unlikely leads: A 70-year-old cleaning woman and a giant Pacific octopus named Marcellus. In the archives, we revisit episodes in which we discussed a new member of Terri's family (July 3, 2023), the work-life seesaw (July 1, 2020), and fake life deadlines (July 3, 2019). Disclaimer: Terri is not a Medicare expert. Go to https://www.ssa.gov/medicare/sign-up/part-b-only for official Part B info.Next week, we will be debuting a new format. As our kids have become adults, we find ourselves more interested in getting caught up on movies and streaming than in going over the same parenting topics over and over. So we're going to talk about what we're watching, what we thought about it, and maybe what parenting advice we can take from it, if only what not to do.We'll check out an older TV show or movie and a newer one each week, starting with Lost as our oldie (S1 E1, "Pilot: Part 1") and A Gentleman in Moscow as our newcomer (S1 E1, "A Master of Circumstance"). Follow along!
From a childhood in the suburbs of Chicago to a life serving his nation, a true American hero has blessed this country all his life, and he's now fighting to save our nation's future through Convention of States.

Welcome to The Hangar Z Podcast, brought to you by Vertical Helicasts. In this two-part series, we sit down to talk with Desiree Horton. With 33 years of aviation expertise and over 10,000 flight hours under her belt, Horton brings a wealth of experience to the world of public safety aviation. Currently serving as a fire/rescue pilot for Kern County Fire Department, she has dedicated her career to protecting lives and property from the skies. Horton embarked on her aviation journey in 1990 in Southern California, navigating some of the busiest airspace and operating out of the Van Nuys Airport, one of the busiest airports. Her diverse background includes flying tours, charter flights, news coverage, traffic watch, and movie production work. For almost half of her career, she honed her skills in various aviation roles before realizing her dream of becoming a fire pilot. The path to becoming a fire pilot was challenging in the early days, with limited opportunities for those without prior experience. Undeterred, Horton financed her own training for long line and mountain courses, securing a position with a company willing to give her a chance. She made history by becoming the first female pilot on an exclusive use contract for Region 5 with the U.S. Forest Service (USFS). After years of serving as a contract pilot for the USFS, Horton achieved her goal of working for a fire department in Southern California. In 2013, she joined Cal Fire as a full-time female fire helicopter pilot, dedicating almost seven years to the organization. Continuing her trailblazing career, she moved on to the Orange County Fire Department in her hometown, where she became the first woman to work in air operations and as a pilot for the department. Currently, Horton is breaking new ground with the Kern County Fire Department as their first-ever female fire/rescue pilot. Driven by a desire to encourage women to explore opportunities in public safety aviation, she aspires to overcome obstacles and promote a positive culture within the industry. Thank you to our Sponsors CNC Technologies, Anodyne Electronics Manufacturing and Metro Aviation.

Remember those teenage years when we'd create breakup mixtapes? The potency of those songs, how they could evoke such raw emotions - whether it was Paul Simon's '50 Ways to Leave Your Lover' or The Carpenters' 'We've Only Just Begun'. Well, this episode is a homage to the power of music, its unforgettable moments, and the rock legends who've shaped its course. We kick off with a nostalgic trip to when The Police graced the stage at CBGB for their first time - a memory that's now 45 years old. We then switch gears to Robert Plant's recent performance of 'Stairway to Heaven' at a cancer benefit, which Andy Taylor of Duran Duran put together. We move on to delve into the hidden secrets of The Police's Synchronicity album and Paul McCartney's bass contribution to The Rolling Stones' new album, Hackney Diamonds. But that's not all, we also navigate the surprising connections between iconic albums, shedding light on how Paul McCartney, John Lennon, and Mick Jagger lent their voices to each other's music. Impressively, we dive into the influences of our upbringing, reminiscing about the Ramones' third studio album, 'Rocket to Russia', and The The's unforgettable song 'Uncertain Smile'. We reflect on how these unforgettable tunes formed the soundtrack of our youth and school dances. Lastly, we reflect on the emotional gravity of break-up mixtapes and the songs that helped us navigate the stormy seas of heartbreak. So, are you ready to take a walk down memory lane with us? Tune in and let the magic of music transport you back in time!

Central Station - Stories from Outback Australian Cattle Stations
You can't live and work in the Northern Territory and not have a story or two to tell. So, imagine how many stories Danny Hayes must have, having flown as a helicopter mustering pilot for over 30 years. I think it's safe to say that he has seen and done a lot of things, and got the experience to back up his opinions. So, at 8 months pregnant, I headed out to Mainoru Station, north-east of Katherine, to sit down with Danny and hear some of his yarns. This episode is the first of two episodes with Danny. In this episode he shares yarns from his childhood and early days as a pilot. In the second episode Danny recounts his history of finding himself in some hairy situations while flying, and how experience and a bit of good luck prevailed so he could live to tell the tale. This week they cover what some have called the greatest TV show pilot of all time - the very first episode of LOST appropriately title "Pilot (Part 1)." Revisit the series again with Steve, or view it for the very first time with Chris and Madison! They talk plane wreckage, scary monster noises, and whatever is up with that orange mouthed dude. During our coverage of LOST we will have several segments. "Beach, Please" is the segment where Steve fires off bits of trivia about each individual episode. "Mile High Moments" are our top 3 favorite moments from the episode. "Passenger Princess" is the segment where we name the best actor or actress who gave the best performance of the episode. And "Lost & Found" is where we keep track off all the island's many many mysteries throughout the season. Please keep in mind that there are probably way better segment titles out there, but in the spirit of not spoiling the show for Chris or Madison, these are the titles we came up with. 00:00:00 - Introduction 00:04:08 - Overall Thoughts 00:11:20 - Vanity Fair Article Discussion [LINK HERE] 00:19:13 - Scene by Scene Recap 01:10:12 - Beach, Please 01:14:57 - Mile High Moments 01:27:21 - Passenger Princess 01:30:28 - Lost & Found We're on YouTube! We got BRAND NEW merch! "Whatever it is I'm doing, I just want to master it. I don't care what it is." - Capt Dapo. The second part of the conversation with Captain Dapo Olumide, MD of Nigeria Air. He talks about the transferrable skills he gained from piloting and how he applies them to parenting, business, and leadership. Rodney asked about the Sosoliso plane crash from 2005, the Top Gun movies, and the legendary Capt Sully who made an emergency landing in the Hudson River. He talked about his dedication to excellence, discipline, and attention to detail, and how he navigates spaces that thrive on mediocrity. He concludes with a description of what the best version of himself looks like. Sponsored by Avo Creative: https://adobe.ly/42iNG2r
"To be a pilot, you need to be cool, calm, and collected. And that comes from talent -- an innate skill..." - Capt Dapo. Col. Clarence (Bud) Emil Anderson served in the United States Air Force during World War II, and is a triple-ace fighter pilot. He's the highest scoring living American fighter ace, and the 10th highest scoring Mustang Ace of all time. Col. Anderson was a member of the 357th Fighter group, which was said to have “shot down the most airplanes in the shortest time of any unit in the European theater, perhaps the whole Air Force.” They had over 600 aerial victories in 14 months, and 42 aces, more than any other fighter group. He also commanded the 355th Tactical Fighter Wing, an F-105 Thunderchief unit, during its final months of service in the Vietnam War. Col. Anderson was inducted into the National Aviation Hall of Fame in 2008, and in 2013, was inducted into the International Air & Space Hall of Fame. This year, Col. Anderson celebrated his 100th birthday. Click here to learn about his birthday celebration. For more pictures of Bud during the war, click here.
