The following morning, negotiators approach the gates and reveal the Arkenstone, hoping it will move Thorin to make a deal. Thorin, still fixated on the treasure, relents and accepts the plan, but he has no intention of fulfilling his end of the bargain. Thorin plans to wait for Dain and his troops, keep the gold, and fight for the Arkenstone. In anger he turns on Bilbo Baggins and threatens to kill him. Some of the dwarves are secretly dismayed at Thorin's treatment of the hobbit. Dain and his troops finally appear. Bard will not let Dain in to see Thorin, and both sides prepare to do battle. Suddenly the skies darken as thousands of bats block out the sun. Their arrival signals the threat of attack by a huge force of goblins and wargs. The danger forces the elves, men, and dwarves to unite to defeat their common enemy. At first the strategy appears to work, but the numbers of evil fighters are too great. Thorin, finally coming to his senses, breaches his wall and emerges to rally the weary allies. Just when it appears the goblins will prevail, the eagles arrive, and the forces for good gain the upper hand. Bilbo, who has been with the elves, puts on his invisibility ring and is struck by a rock and knocked unconscious before the final victory. The Hobbit: Written by J.R.R. Tolkien. Soundtrack composed by Howard Shore. Audiobook narrated, produced, and edited by Bluefax. Art by Jian Guo.

A soldier finds the unconscious hobbit and carries him to the winning camp. Gandalf congratulates the hobbit for his luck in surviving the battle, and Bilbo is quickly taken to Thorin, who is dying from battle wounds. Thorin sincerely apologizes to Bilbo and recognizes he cannot take the treasure with him into death. The hobbit grieves for Thorin, and Bilbo is now ready to return home. Thorin is buried with the Arkenstone, which was destined to be his, and Dain, the new dwarf king, proves wise in distributing the treasure. A large group including Gandalf and Beorn travels with the elves and the Elvenking, and they all sing Bilbo's praises. After spending the winter with Beorn, Bilbo stays for a while in Rivendell. The Hobbit: Written by J.R.R. Tolkien. Soundtrack composed by Howard Shore. Audiobook narrated, produced, and edited by Bluefax. Art by Jian Guo.

Several days pass in a standoff; the dwarves are trapped inside Lonely Mountain, and the armed men and elves block the exit. Roäc, the raven, reappears and reports that Dain and his troop of 500 are near but predicts that is not enough force to defeat the opposing troops. He again encourages Thorin to settle the affair peacefully. Thorin rejects this advice, and in despair Bilbo Baggins decides to take action, trying to force Thorin's hand. Still in possession of the Arkenstone, Bilbo takes a turn at guard duty and heads to the elves' camp. When he is taken to the leaders, Bard and the Elvenking, Bilbo reports the movement of Dain's warriors and gives the Arkenstone to them, hoping they can use it to bargain with Thorin. Bilbo meets Gandalf in the camp, but he returns to the dwarves in the fortress. The Hobbit: Written by J.R.R. Tolkien. Soundtrack composed by Howard Shore. Welcome to Botched: A D&D Podcast! The moment you've all been waiting for! No, it's not the start of Season 4. It's the end of these damn in between episodes! The group may have subbed out a player for another, but hey, it can all be explained by brain trauma. Sure, the way the last episode ended doesn't really line up with the start of this one, but really, you're asking a lot of alcoholics. This episode has a little something for everyone. Rocks. Rock dwarves. Rock basins. Shiny rocks. I mean, what more could you ask for? This episode leaves me with a few questions, such as, how hard is it to see a sign in plain sight? Why are statues so rough on the party? Where is this Arkenstone? Will it even grant immortality to everyone? Tune in and find out!
Did you know that we have magnetite crystals inside our brains? Magnetite is a mineral made up of iron oxide but it has equal amounts of iron (ii), which is ferrous oxide, and iron (iii) which is ferric oxide. Ferric oxide has three electrons--represented by the number 3 and one of those came from ferrous oxide--represented by the number 2. Both produce numerous types of materials such as plastics, heat-absorbing glass, ceramics and even rubber. Special high purity iron oxides are used in the production of ferrites, a type of ceramic magnet used in electronics such as speakers, TVs and computer memory cores. Magnetite is found in all types of rocks--igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary and yes it is magnetic. And this stuff is in our bodies and more primarily, our brains. Physics Today published an article back in 2018 titled 'Mapping magnetite in the human brain.' In 1992, researchers discovered the magnetic crystal in human brain tissue and it's thought to have formed biogenically with some possibly originating in ferritin which is an intracellular protein that is found in many organisms. The article goes on to say that various studies have shown that brain cells respond to external magnetic fields. There's also a link between elevated levels of magnetite and neurodegenerative diseases. Researchers noted that there were elevated levels of magnetite in brain tissue from Alzheimer's disease patients. Two scientists from the Ludwig-Maximilians University of Munich, geophysicist Stuart Gilder and neuroscientist Christoph Schmitz, carried out the first systematic mapping of magnetite nanoparticles in the human brain. They found magnetite concentrated in the same places in the seven brains they analyzed. They noted that the magnetite was mostly in the cerebellum and brain stem and that there was a striking asymmetry in the distribution of the magnetite particles between both hemispheres of the brain. In animals such as homing pigeons and honeybees, magnetites enable them to sense magnetic field lines. As for humans, we don't seem to sense those magnetic fields. Perhaps we are simply not in tune with our bodies anymore? Think of when a natural disaster is about to happen and animals start to flee. This is because they are able to sense a disturbance, but we are unable to. For more information, explore the links in the podcast description.
Not At Home - The expedition is trapped in the secret passage for several days. The group realizes Smaug has disappeared from his lair and sends Bilbo Baggins out to explore the situation. Bilbo finds the fabled Arkenstone and conceals it as his share of the treasure. Thorin also gives Bilbo a chain mail coat created by the elves. The dwarves explore the treasure and finally occupy an old watchman's tower to detect Smaug's return.
The Clouds Burst - The following morning, negotiators approach the gates and reveal the Arkenstone, hoping it will move Thorin to make a deal.
The Return Journey - Bilbo Baggins is knocked out shortly after spotting the eagles and misses the end of the conflict. After spending the winter with Beorn, Bilbo stays for a while in Rivendell

Discussion of The Hobbit, Chapter Sixteen Join Maggie and Cam as celebrate Gandalf’s return and analyze Bilbo’s parlay with the enemy. The hobbit’s character growth seems to have come full circle in this chapter, but the idea of regression continues to dominate the narrative. This episode explores the magical hierarchy of Middle-earth and the loyalty / disloyalty of Bilbo’s gamble with the Arkenstone. Maggie questions and explores the chapter’s many Game of Thrones precursors and Cam continues to develop his theory about Tolkien’s parentheticals. We also talk about birds. During our Second Breakfast, Cam talks about the elements of Elizabethan drama that appear in this chapter and Maggie leads a discussion on retellings and adaptation. Discussion of The Hobbit, Chapter Thirteen Join Maggie and Cam as they triumphantly return to the books to talk about magic and ghosts. This episode explores the unnerving similarities between the Ring and the newly introduced Arkenstone. We continue our discussion on the power of sight in Middle-earth amid a chapter blanketed in darkness. Cam offers three working theories about the Ring’s power and influence as a magical object, and Maggie meditates on the concept of “home” in this story. During our Second Breakfast, we respond to one critic’s strangely abstract praise of The Hobbit as being a “flawless masterpiece”. Maggie suggests that Jude Law should play young Gandalf in the Amazon show. Have an observation, comment, or theory on this episode? Discussion of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug [Extended Edition] Join Maggie and Cam in this special episode, where they question the narrative implications of having Benedict Cumberbatch voice every character in the movie. We discuss the nature of evil and the strange, incestuous relationship between Smaug, Sauron, and the Necromancer. This episode also explores the parallels between the Ring and the Arkenstone, as well as the many callbacks within this movie and the series so far. We also try to figure out who the real villain of the prequel trilogy is - Smaug or Azog? In the face of Maggie's lukewarm reaction to the movie, Cam mounts a spirited defense of it as his favorite Middle-earth film. During our Second Breakfast, we discuss adaptation and disappointment through the lens of the post-Sorkin years of The West Wing, and Maggie reflects on this year's Reading Rush. Craig, Stephanie, and Kyle are back for the final installment of our podcast series on The Hobbit. In this episode, we talk about chapters 15 through 19, including Bilbo's theft of the Arkenstone, the Battle of the Five Armies, and the return journey home. Craig dons his elbow patches so that he and Kyle can continue their Hobbit adventure, this time talking about the Smaug chapters: that is, chapters 12 through 14. They talk about Smaug, of course, but also about the Arkenstone, the relationship of these scenes to others in The Hobbit and in The Lord of the Rings, and Tolkien's meditations on greed. Ever wondered why Smaug was so ticked off that the villagers of Lake Town had destroyed their bridges? Listen and find out! In a continuation of our series on guarded (x) cards, Grant and I take a look at the Arkenstone. This 1 cost neutral attachment gives all unique characters an extra willpower. This seems to fit very nicely into a tactics deck, but does it work anywhere?

Welcome to Botched: A D&D Podcast! The moment you’ve all been waiting for! No, it’s not the start of Season 4. It’s the end of these damn in between episodes! The group may have subbed out a player for another, but hey, it can all be explained by brain trauma. Sure, the way the last episode ended doesn’t really line up with the start of this one, but really, you’re asking a lot of alcoholics. Join in on the banter as these dickheads whose understanding of the rules is questionable, and their moral compasses are even more so, stumble through dungeons, traps, monsters, and social intricacies as they attempt to complete a quest for wholly selfish reasons. If you are a veteran dragon slayer from the long long ago of the 1970’s or a newbie who is interested in hearing what this devil worshipping game is all about, Botched: A D&D Podcast is the DnD Podcast for you. As mentioned, we are playing 5th edition rules, so if you’ve never played this version of the game before, listening to us will give you an idea of how it may be different from previous versions of the game. 5th edition is a great rule set to start playing the game with. Dear Friends, Bilbo is making moves and shaking up the game. We discuss the dwarves' plans, Bilbo's actions and his meeting, Gandalf, and some Hero steps that ended up sounding very musical. Please enjoy and send to a friend! Thank you for listening!
The ladies are back with a more relaxed week - free of the fate of the souls of elves and men, we discuss the things that really matter, like why nobody in Laketown wears pants? Thats right, we watched the 1977 Hobbit film, directed by Jules Bass and Arthur Rankin Jr., which neither of us had seen! Give it a gander to play along, the episode includes some play by play commentary, but is primarily our discussion before and after we watched. We really really enjoyed this lovely film :) then we broke down some Arkenstone conspiracy theories in this week’s Shadowfact
Dear Friends, In this chapter, the dwarves continue to be cowards so Bilbo takes the lead. Gold is found, but the dragon is missing and the company retreats to a watchtower outside of the mountain. Bilbo makes an important discovery: the Arkenstone, and we discuss if this is possibly a Silmaril?? Please enjoy, send to a friend, and thank you for listening!
In this episode, the group seeks shelter in the ancient Fane of Durin, a hidden temple to the first dwarf. Inside the temple they discover some finely crafted dwarves traps, and a stone so beautiful that only the Arkenstone can compare.
This week Caitlin, Rachel, and Emily discuss the final three chapters of the The Hobbit. Characters – The Clouds Burst and the Return Journey Bilbo – A Hobbit. Better than everyone. Gandalf – Our favourite wizard Bard – Dragonslayer, descendant of Girion. The Elvenking – Leader of the Mirkwood Elves. The Arkenstone – it’s basically […]
In Chapter 16 of The Hobbit, little Bilbo takes matters (and the Arkenstone) into his own hands and makes a deal with Bard and the Elvenking, who presumably don’t already have one, in an attempt to end the standoff peacefully. We consider just how short-sighted Thorin’s position really is, discuss how Bilbo totally owns the whole “honest burglar” thing, and finally welcome the return of one of Tolkien’s most beloved characters. Plus still more raven voices, and a question from Barliman’s Bag about Gandalf’s D&D character sheet that makes us reach for a lifeline.
Trapped in the side-door tunnel at the beginning of Chapter 13 of The Hobbit, “Not at Home,” Bilbo leads the party in the only direction they can go: down. At the bottom they find no sign of Smaug, and the Dwarves rejoice at the recovery of their lost treasure. Only Mr. Baggins realizes that the celebration is premature and wonders where the dragon is. We examine the Arkenstone and the many meanings of a deceptively complex chapter title, and if you thought cram was hard to eat, wait until you hear how hard it is to figure out its etymology.
Concerning the Dwarves, from Durin’s dawn to Gimli’s glory... Durin the Deathless Erebor, the Arkenstone, and Smaug Thror, Thrain, and the Last Dwarf Ring Azog & the Battle of Azanulbizar Thrain & the Ring Thorin Meets Gandalf Dís, Dwarf-woman Gimli For more on this episode and The Tolkien Road podcast, please visit TolkienRoad.com or Facebook.com/TolkienRoad. This week, the narrative takes a turn as Bilbo burgles the Arkenstone, and Smaug meets his watery doom.

Trish Lambert and Laura Berkholtz take on the weighty theme of bromance in The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug.
Hey, everybody. Here comes the second of a series of four interviews I did on my visist to the SPIEL 2011 in Essen. All of these shows will be in English (since the Germans managed to evade my microphones, somehow). I hope, you can cope with my teutonic English for the sake of the interviewees. Again, I am sorry for the discrepancy between desired and realized publishing date. On the up side, I think my new mobile recording setup really did its job well so that the interviews should have a far better audio quality than last year. This second interview is with Eero Tuovinen from Arkenstone Publishing. His company distributes indie and OSR games in Finland and also publishes his own games and translations of indie games. It has been Arkenstone's third attendance to the SPIEL and they might just be coming again next year. We talk about how indie and OSR games are received at the SPIEL, Eero's efforts to spread the word, news from the Forge-scene and some new, recommended games Eero has with him among other things. I hope you like it! Feel free to leave comments and feedback, and stay tuned for two more upcoming episodes. Hope to read from you! Oh, and if you like what you heard, feel free to click those flattr buttons to retrocactively fund my recording equipment. 23:22 minutes (16.08 MB)
Scroll down for English version …
For the introductory episode of LOTRO Academy, Branick and Mysteri invite Damworth, leader of the Swifty and Hammo kinship on Arkenstone, onto the show to offer a brief primer on character creation in Lord of the Rings Online™. Topics discussed include where to go to get started, choosing a server, choosing a race, and choosing a class. Though we keep this one pretty light, we plan to go much more in-depth in our future episodes. You can listen to the episode using the player below.
