The Shameless Plug is never late. Nor is it early. It arrives precisely when it means to, roughly halfway through the on-sale cycle of the latest issue of Empire. To which, after all, this show is dedicated to shamelessly plugging. And once again, the Fellowship of the Plug — Chris Hewitt and Empire editor, Nick de Semlyen — have assembled in the Podmines of Moria for that plugging. You have Nick's microphone, and Chris' copy of Adobe Audition, and if the deluge of Lord Of The Rings references hadn't already clued you in, the duo are here to talk about issue 450 of Empire, which is dedicated to celebrating 25 years of The Lord Of The Rings: The Fellowship Of The Rings. Nick regales us all with tales of reuniting the four Hobbits and Sir Ian McKellen, virtually collecting the rest of the Fellowship, plus Cate Blanchett, Liv Tyler, Peter Jackson, Philippa Boyens, and getting Andy Serkis to write a piece for us. It's not all LOTR, with tales of Raimi-wrangling, a bit of Gore, and a Gollum impression you will never be able to unhear. Simples. Enjoy!
What if The Lord of the Rings was never just a story? What if Tolkien was encoding a spiritual map for men living in the modern war for the soul?In this episode of The Manly Catholic, James Caldwell speaks with author and philosopher Paul List, co-author of Mount Doom: The Prophecy of Tolkien Revealed, to expose what Tolkien was really writing about: original sin, virtue and vice, artificial intelligence, and so much more.Paul reveals how Tolkien's mythology is a Catholic psychological map of the human soul. Hobbits as habits. The Ring as addiction. Sauron as AI. Middle-earth as the mind. Vice as Orcs. Virtue as the Fellowship. Faith and reason as elves and men.Temperance, fortitude, prudence, and justice as the cardinal virtues sent on a mission to destroy the Ring. This conversation connects Tolkien to Aquinas, Aristotle, St. Augustine, and how prophetic his beloved stories really are for the modern man.James also issues a direct challenge to men:Stop living passively. Clean up your habits. Reject pornography. Reject the virtual world. Build competence. Build virtue. Cultivate discipline. Become dangerous in holiness. This is not entertainment. This is formation. And neutrality is no longer an option.Push play if you're done being comfortable and ready to become dangerous for Christ.

To prepare for Homer, Virgil, Beowulf, the Eddas, and Dante—The Heights begins with Tolkien. In a talk from 2016, former middle school core teacher and current upper school classics teacher Tom Cox defends the place of J. R. R. Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings in the epic tradition. He then explains why Middle Earth is so uniquely suited to the middle school, using Samwise the Stouthearted as our guide to the heart of a middle school boy. Starting The Fellowship of the Ring and feeling overwhelmed by names, races, and places you're “supposed” to know already? You're not alone. In this episode of Fantasy for the Ages, Jim breaks down a clean, beginner-friendly Who's Who of The Fellowship of the Ring — the characters who actually matter, what their roles are, and why you should care, without drowning in Tolkien lore, appendices, or homework. We'll cover:• Every member of the Fellowship• Key Elves, Hobbits, and Men you'll meet along the way• The ancient beings and quiet side characters that add emotional weight• The shadowy forces that set the stakes for the entire journeyWhether this is your first time reading Tolkien, a reread after years away, or you've only ever watched the movies and want to try the books, this episode is designed to make Middle-earth feel approachable, not intimidating.
Most people haven’t read how Tolkien actually wrote how The Hobbit precisely connects to The Lord of the Rings. In The Quest of Erebor (first published in Unfinished Tales) Tolkien explains precisely how every major event in The Hobbit is connected to the greater story in The Lord of the Rings. And it’s not only the historical/factual connections–Tolkien clearly connects the philosophical underpinnings of Middle-earth more clearly into The Hobbit too! We take a look at: The three published versions of the Quest for Erebor—and why the Annotated Hobbit's is the longest and most complete Gandalf's “absurd” commitment to Bilbo, and why he pushes for a stealthy quest instead of open war Why Gandalf was concerned about the Hobbits forgetting the “high and perilous” figures of legend. The crucial role of Smaug as the north's wild card, and why Gandalf fears a Sauron-Smaug alliance In our extended episode (available for our members) we talk about: How Tolkien could have retconned: stone giants, Beorn's descendants, Gundabad orcs, and trala-lally elves into The Lord of the Rings How Gandalf's mysterious “waking mind” connects to fate and agency in Tolkien's world Listener corrections and deep-dives into Hobbit trivia

Vragen of opmerkingen? Mail ons op allinthegame@bnr.nl Over All in the GameAll in the Game is de podcast over games voor iedereen. Het komt allemaal aan bod in All in the Game. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Tiny Terrors (Part III) - Elves! Leprechauns! Imps! Goblins! Green Goblins! Hobgoblins! Hobbits! and Halflings! We are finally done talking about Sex and the City!We conclude our discussion with an examination of Miranda and Charlotte as foils of one another, and through the lens of archetypes rather than fully developed characters, branching off from our talk last episode about the theory of the three other women as facets of Carrie. This leads to the most interesting part of the entire series, where we delve into the classic four-character-group dynamic, with the archetypes of Patriarch, Matriarch, Craftsman, and Clown. We spend way too much time (probably) talking about famous groups of four characters and how they fit in to these archetypes, leading with Sex and the City, The Golden Girls, and the March sisters from Little Women. We found the pattern fits for the Beatles, the Plastics from Mean Girls, the Hobbits from The Lord of the Rings, and many more...Further Reading:Arrested Development creator Mitchell Hurwitz talks about the archetypes and the Bluth siblingsBuzzfeed breaks down a bunch of four-character groupsBuzzfeed also highlights how Miranda was always the worst

Reading old books and melting things. What more can life afford?
The next morning, the boys spent some time assessing how bad they all smelled. The hobbits were anxious to find Gandalf, so Del stayed back to look after them, and Tyler and Yolo argued over leadership within the fellowgroup, while Guy scoped out the situation at The Prancing Pony and Adam checked at the gate for any sign of the wizard. When the gate guards heard about the hobbits, one of them took off running, but then the other shot him with an arrow, crying out about getting some reward for herself. At the Inn, Aaron Fudge was strangely insistent that Guy come back with the hobbits. Can the troupe get the hobbits out of Bree alive?***Del's character played by Tom this episode while she's out sick***Featuring players Tyler Hewitt, Del Borovic, Guy Bradford, and Adam McNamara, and Dungeon Master Tom McGee.Jesters of Middle-earth streams live every Wednesday at 7:30pm ET on Twitch (https://www.twitch.tv/dumbdumbdice)Enjoying Jesters of Middle-earth? - Consider supporting the show for as little as $1 a month to get BTS fun, an ad-free feed, and even add your own character to the podcast! In this Replay episode, we're revisiting some of our favorite Dessert and a Movie moments! Start in the Hogwarts kitchens with a classic Treacle Tart, then brace yourself for one of the most infamous desserts in sitcom history: Rachel Green's beef-filled trifle from Friends. Finally, journey to Middle-earth for a bite of Lembas Bread from The Lord of the Rings. It's a magical, hilarious, and slightly horrifying journey through pop culture's sweetest (and strangest) bakes!
Hobbits are curious creatures. Simple taste, a love of “good tilled earth” and yet surprisingly courageous. And according to Dr. Christopher Snyder, they might hold the key to living the good life. This week, I had a delightful conversation with Dr. Snyder, medieval historian, Tolkien scholar, and author of Hobbit Virtues: Rediscovering Virtue Ethics Through J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.Chris's work as an academic intersects history, philosophy, and storytelling and even has taken him to the hallowed halls of Oxford University - Tolkien's alma mater.A few highlights from our conversation:Why Hobbit Virtues?Chris began writing this book in the aftermath of the 2016 election, during a time of cultural division. His thesis: virtue ethics can cut through polarization.By focusing on virtues like courage, humility, sacrifice, and friendship, we can find common ground. Chris argues Tolkien's writings are full of timeless virtues embodied in hobbits, elves, and men.Fellowship as a VirtueFriendship is something of a hot topic right now at Geeky Stoics. Chris didn't shy away from the controversy, arguing:* Tolkien modeled his Fellowship of the Ring partly on the Arthurian Round Table and partly on his own experiences at Oxford, where “fellowship” literally meant scholars eating, drinking, and learning together.* Unlike utilitarian philosophy (the greatest good for the greatest number), Tolkien's heroes make personal, sometimes costly, choices rooted in courage. Aragorn choosing to save Merry and Pippin instead of chasing Frodo isn't “efficient,” but it's the right thing to do.* Chris ties this back to our modern loneliness crisis. Where Aristotle emphasized the polis (the city), Tolkien and Lewis remind us that the quality of our friendships and fellowships challenge us to be our best selves.Heroism: The Anglo-Pagan and Christian EthicAnother fascinating insight: Tolkien blended ancient pagan heroic traditions with Christian ethics.* The “barbarian ethos” of the Vikings and Anglo-Saxons valued courage even when hope was lost.* Christianity introduced something radical: hope not reserved for emperors or warriors, but for the meek, the humble, and the forgotten.* Tolkien fused these in his hobbits: ordinary folk who, precisely because of their humility, are capable of great virtue. As Chris put it, when Aragorn bows before the hobbits at his coronation, that's Peter Jackson's interpretation of Tolkien's ideal of kingship - ensuring Frodo and company “bow to no one.”So What?At Geeky Stoics, we've often said that pop culture stories are modern myths, our entry point for Western philosophy. Chris reminds us that this wasn't accidental. Tolkien (like Lewis, like Lucas) used storytelling as a vessel for telling a greater truth. We remember Qui-Gon's line, “Your focus determines your reality” more than reading a philosophy textbook; we remember Sam carrying Frodo, or Obi-Wan telling Anakin, “You were my brother.”Stories shape our moral imagination.I'll end this where Chris began our conversation:“The elucidation of truth, and the encouragement of good morals in this real world, by the ancient device of exemplifying them in unfamiliar embodiments, that may tend to ‘bring them home.”-J.R.R. Today on Unsupervised Learning, Razib talks to John Hawks, a paleoanthropologist who has been a researcher and commentator in human evolutionary biology and paleoanthropology for over two decades. With a widely read weblog (now on Substack), a book on Homo naledi, and highly cited scientific papers, Hawks is an essential voice in understanding the origins of our species. He graduated from Kansas State University in 1994 with degrees in French, English, and Anthropology, and received both his M.A. and Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of Michigan, where he studied under Milford Wolpoff. He is currently working on a textbook on the origins of modern humans in their evolutionary context. Hawks has already been a guest on Unsupervised Learning three times. In this episode, Razib and Hawks focus on a very specific question: What were the different contributions to the heritage of modern humans in a world more than 200,000 years ago that was inhabited by at least half a dozen hominin species? First, Hawks takes us back to the year 2000 and his early work extending a more multiregional framework of human evolution, exploring what could be gleaned from the archaeological and paleontological record. Then Razib and Hawks discuss the ancient DNA revolution and the discovery that modern humans had ancestry from Neanderthals, as well as from an entirely new species, the Denisovans. They also examine the fact that, unlike Neanderthals, Denisovans appear to have been separated into very different regional populations that made distinct contributions to various modern populations. Razib also asks Hawks about the discovery of new pygmy human species in Luzon, as well as the current state of research on Homo naledi in South Africa and the Hobbits of Flores. Hawks contends that DNA will likely be extracted from all these lineages at some point and, if not, protein sequence data may be obtained. This would finally give researchers the statistical power to evaluate the possibility of extremely archaic admixture events. Hawks and Razib also address the potential role of natural selection driven by introgressed genes from sister lineages of humans and how this shaped modern variation.
As Adam and Guy tried to figure out when the heck Guy had sprouted pointy ears, Hobbits with a reservation for Underhill arrived. Two rangers from across the room jumped up and one of them was Del! Earlier, at Bombadil's house, Goldberry had told Del about a hobbit who's supposed to destroy something but doesn't have the protection he needs. Del was tasked with finding a ranger who can help and then follow her instincts to the hobbit. So, she departed, slightly drunk, and headed east, and eventually happened upon a hobbit being threatened at sword-point by a man demanding if he has the ring. Will Del's close-up magic save the day?Featuring players Tyler Hewitt, Del Borovic, Guy Bradford, and Adam McNamara, and Dungeon Master Tom McGee.Jesters of Middle-earth streams live every Wednesday at 7:30pm ET on Twitch (https://www.twitch.tv/dumbdumbdice)Enjoying Jesters of Middle-earth?- Consider becoming a Patron of Dumb-Dumbs & Dice for as little as $1 a month and gain access to a ton of extra BTS fun (https://www.patreon.com/dumbdumbdice)- Buy merch on our website (https://dumbdumbdice.com/) - Watch us on YouTube (https://youtube.com/@dumbdumbdice) - Follow us on Instagram (https://instagram.com/dumbdumbdice) - Follow us on Facebook (https://facebook.com/dumbdumbdice) Artwork by the brilliant Del Borovic - Website & Portfolio (https://delborovic.com/) - Twitter (https://twitter.com/deltastic) Theme song by Sound Gallery by Dmitry Taras- YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/@soundgallerybydmitrytaras)- Pixabay (https://pixabay.com/music/fantasy-dreamy-childrens-dark-mysterious-halloween-night-scary-creepy-spooky-horror-music-116551/)See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

So I just finished chapter 9 of The Fellowship of the Ring, and I've got to say, the Hobbits are so different from the book to the movie.
If you've seen Lord of the Rings, you know this man. Farmer Maggot. The one and the only. And I am astounded that the Hobbits actually eat in the home of Farmer Maggot.
The Númenóreans altered the calendar of the Elves; Alan & James never could get the hang of Thursdays. Join The Man of the West and The Sage of the South as we practice only the best kind of pedantry in our exploration of Appendix D on the various intricate calendar systems in Middle-earth. The Elves are obsessed with sixes and twelves, the Númenóreans have to fix a millennial deficit — which has nothing to do with spending too much on Starbucks — and the Hobbits always do their own thing. We wonder if days not belonging to a month feel lonely, agree that 30-day months are best, and discover that pigs fly on Friday the First of Summerfilth. Also, James' new nickname is optimistic. If intelligent alien or fictional species like Vulcans or Hobbits existed, could they be ordained as priests? We dive into this speculative theology question and also explore Marian devotion, dowsing, near-death experiences, and papal infallibility. Questions Covered: 02:59 – Would other intelligent creatures (like hobbits or vulcans) become priests? 08:29 – Could a Catholic holding all that the Church teaches on Mary believe that she's overemphasized? 12:03 – What are the “living waters” discussed in John 4? 15:32 – I've seen your videos on dowsing. Is dowsing for future events permissible, or is it considered divination? 24:55 – Can a consecration be valid if one item is defective? 30:58 – Why do most people who have Near-Death Experiences that are not religious or mention Jesus? 36:01 – How do you meditate on the rosary while saying the vocal prayers? 40:21 – When Jesus talks about “a divided kingdom” and the demons, what is he talking about? 46:20 – If the pope were to make a definitive statement, could half of it be infallible and the other half be fallible? 51:44 – What are the limitations of a bishop over the liturgical functions of a diocese?
