The Ghost of Paul Revere announced its breakup in April of 2022 and fans of the Maine-based folk trio were heartbroken. The band said it had become more difficult to make records and tour while maintaining their friendship and the latter was more important. But 2024 brought about two rays of sunshine in the world of Ghost fans: The band has released a 10th anniversary, 180-gram vinyl reissue of its most successful release, Believe. And lead singer and primary songwriter Griffin William Sherry is back with a new album and tour. He told us the sound difference in his new solo work and what fans loved with Ghost isn't that different. He also said, “Never say never,” to the question of a reunion of the original band. Sherry not only sat in with Frank and Falls on Roots Music Rambler this week, but became the first artist to play “live” during the show recording. He performed a solo acoustic rendition of his song “Juliet” from his new album Hundred Mile Wilderness. Falls shares the latest purchase to accompany his growing record collection. Frank and Falls also talk about free concert series at several communities around the country where you can sometimes catch great Americana acts for free. Falls also calls on our listeners to let us know of free concert series where great acts often play. We're curating a list. The hosts also offer up their picks for new music for you to discover this week in the Pickin' the Grinnin' segment of the show. Don't forget you can now show your support of the show with Roots Music Rambler's new merch, now available at rootsmusicrambler.com/store. Authentic t-shirts, hats and stickers are now available. Perhaps most notably, Joffrey holds the men's unsupported records on the Dartmouth 50, Dartmouth 50 out-and-back, and the Hundred Mile Wilderness. Finn Melanson grew up in New England but truly, he's a man of the world. A restless soul in the best possible way, young Finn's spirit is too large to be confined or defined by geographical boundaries. In this episode we crack Finn open- nay, he cracks US open and we get down to the heart of the matter; what it is that makes us who we are and why the idea of "balance" is overrated. One of my favorites to record- it's truly a gem of a podcast and the knowledge and banter therein makes it sound like the Crew plus Finn are old friends out for a run, quickly bonding over their love for a sport that is equally amazing and absurd. What a fun journey it's been learning about the Appalachian Trail with author Bill Bryson. We end our AT experience with some surprising facts about hypothermia, the rugged and difficult Hundred Mile Wilderness in Maine and a refreshing send-off from Bryson and Katz. This week I'm joined by Aaron Ibey, who is a professional photographer and thru-hiker, having hiked the Appalachian Trail in 2016. He worked for the Appalachian Mountain Club as a ridgerunner in 2018, and talks all about what that job entails, as well as some tips for taking better hiking photos on your smartphone. He ends the episode by telling an insane story from his 2016 thru-hike, where he encountered a mountain lion in the Hundred Mile Wilderness of Maine. Trail Tales has had plenty of bear stories, but never a mountain lion story! Go check out Aaron's photography on Instagram (@ibeyprofin) and consider buying one of his prints online at https://aaronibey.pixieset.com/theprintcollection/ Like what you hear? Dave and Clay were invited to visit the Maine Highlands! So they went and while they were there they stayed at the beautiful and rustic Wilson's on Mooshead Lake. The Wilson's took them fishing in the Kennebec River, where they caught dozens of brook trout and monster smallmouth bass! After fishing it was dinner at the beautiful Kelly's Landing restaurant. While there they got to hang out with local historian Liz from the Katahdin "Kate" Museum, Moosehead's Marine Museum and famous steam ship. The next day the weather turned bad, so they spent some time making friends and checking out the local businesses. The Highlands From Maine’s highest peak, Mt. Katahdin to its largest lake, Moosehead, The Maine Highlands offers great outdoor adventures, historic and cultural experiences, many culinary delights and unexpected entertainment opportunities. Located in the center of Maine, there are more than 200 waterfalls, miles and miles of trails for hiking, ATVing, and some of the best snowmobiling trails anywhere. The last or first portion (depends on your perspective) of the Applachian Trail is in The Maine Highlands. Known as the "Hundred-Mile Wilderness", it is said there are more moose seen there than on any other part of the trail. If you are looking for less moose and more music, head to one of our many festivals, the Waterfront Concerts series in Bangor, enjoy shopping boutique or mall style, or try some of our culinary delights and craft beers. Whatever your adventure, The Maine Highlands is a must visit while exploring Maine.
