I talk with Kim Blanchard‑Trigilio, one of Melanie's cousins who's leading new efforts to finally bring her home. Melanie was 14 when she disappeared from Woburn in 1989. Her family has never stopped searching for her.On Friday, October 27, 1989, 14‑year‑old Melanie Jo Melanson went to a popular party spot behind an industrial park with older Woburn high school kids. She told her grandmother she was staying with a friend so she could stay out late. No one ever saw her again. Her family is convinced she never left that spot — and that the two older boys she was last seen with know far more about what happened that night. More than 35 years later, her disappearance remains one of New England's most haunting unsolved cases.Melanie's cousins Billie‑Sue and Kim have been working tirelessly to generate new tips and keep her case alive. Their mission is simple: bring Melanie home.In this episode, I talk with cousin Kim Blanchard‑Trigilio about Melanie, her life, and the renewed efforts to uncover the truth.Visit MelanieMelanson.comMore case information at crimeofthetruestkind.com/melanie-melansonSalty language: Low*Salty language: Light to medium, topic dependent. Filmmaker Tony Melanson joins Jason Bryant to discuss his new documentary Iron Maidens: Wrestling for Glory, now streaming on Amazon Prime Video. The film chronicles the rise of girls' high-school wrestling in Pennsylvania through the stories of North Allegheny's Leyna Rumpler and Hickory's Avry Ryhal, two pioneers whose friendship and rivalry unfolded as the state sanctioned girls' wrestling for the first time.RELATED: Kyle Klingman's interview with Leyna and Avry. Melanson explains how the project began after following Leyna's journey as a family friend, how he built trust with high-school athletes unaccustomed to cameras, and how he captured both the human and historical sides of this breakthrough season. He discusses the challenges of editing a year's worth of footage into a tight 55-minute feature, the importance of balancing authenticity with clarity for non-wrestling audiences, and the behind-the-scenes choice to use Jocko Willink as narrator. Bryant and Melanson dive into the film's emotional moments with coaches Dan Heckert and Eric Mount, the archival work from Tom Elling and Jeff Byers' recreated championship call, and how former World Team member Erin Tomeo connects the trailblazers of the past with today's generation. The conversation explores what Iron Maidens means for the continued growth of women's wrestling in Pennsylvania and nationwide. Save $20 on an annual BTN+ subscription! On August 4th, 2023 I set an unsupported fastest known time on the 100 mile wilderness section of Maine's Appalachian Trail. In an effort to pay it forward to anyone interested in testing their limits on this route in the future, I recorded this trip report with Xander Keiter, who is a fellow HMW enthusiast and owner of the fastest known supported and overall time on the route. Xander and I discuss the history of the route, what makes it special and intriguing, where it fits in the broader context of the New England trail running scene, how I prepared for the run, what went well, what went poorly, and what might be next.Sponsors:Rabbit - use code Singletrack20 at checkout on their website (https://www.runinrabbit.com/discount/SINGLETRACK20) to get 20% off your next orderKodiak Cakes - use code Singletrack15 at checkout on their website (https://kodiakcakes.com/singletrackpodcast) to get 15% off your next order.HVMN - use this link (https://hvmn.com/SINGLETRACK20) to get 30% off your first subscription to their Ketone IQ product.Feetures - use code Singletrack20 at checkout on their website (https://feetures.com/) to get 20% off your next order.Timestamps:(3:29) - what makes the 100 Mile Wilderness so intriguing, what draws trail runners to the route(22:52) - how I prepared for the 100 Mile Wilderness(30:17) - how I fared on each section, what execution looked like(67:58) - post-run reflections, contextualizing the 100 Mile Wilderness, future plansSample Gear Used:Speedland GS:TamKogalla RA Adventure LightMaurten Gel 100Salomon Adv Skin 12L PackLeki Ultra Trail FX One PolesLinks:Xander Keiter on From The Backcountry Podcast100 Mile Wilderness Fastest Known Time PageFollow Finn on Instagram, Strava, Twitter, Youtube, and PatreonSupport the show
Running is one of the most popular and widespread activities in the country, yet coverage of the sport pales in comparison to team sports such as baseball and football. Media attention to trail and ultrarunning is even more limited, due to challenging accessibility and technology limitations. My guest on the podcast came to running nearly a decade ago, and quickly fell in love with the mountains, trails, and the ultra world. Finn Melanson is the host of Singletrack, one of the most successful podcasts about the trail and ultra scene. His experience covering and participating in the sport have given him unique insight into its recent growth, and where it's headed in the years to come. While Finn and I start by discussing the phenomenal race by Courtney Dauwalter at Western States, we focus on the evolution of ultrarunning and how its coverage continues to improve. While ultrarunning is still a niche sport, it's on a trajectory to become more widely watched in the near future. Finn and I talk about why and how this is happening, including: The importance of having the right people involved in the sport at the right time Why storytelling plays such an important role in making ultras more widely accessible Differences in livestream technology in Europe and the US How UTMB is trying to become the “world Series” of ultrarunning Trail running's influence on podcast and media coverage The evolution of trail and ultrarunning over the past 10 years How running can develop into a geographically based team sport Finding ways to attract people to the sport who will never run an ultra If you love running and want to understand the possibilities for growth in our sport, this podcast is for you!
