In this episode, Dave, Rob, and Kurt step into the ring with Rocky IV (1985), one of the most over-the-top and iconic entries in the franchise. We'll dive into the big questions fans have debated for decades: did Rocky single-handedly solve the Cold War with his fists and an inspiring speech? And when it comes to Apollo Creed's tragic death at the gloves of Ivan Drago, who really shoulders the blame—Apollo himself, Rocky for not throwing in the towel, or the unstoppable force that was Drago? Along the way, we'll look at how this film turned boxing into a symbol of global politics and gave audiences a hero who could seemingly take on an entire superpower. Of course, no discussion of Rocky IV is complete without talking about the montages—the heart-pumping, sweat-drenched, music-driven sequences that might just be the best in movie history. From training in the Siberian wilderness to Drago's high-tech gym sessions, the film pushes the art of the montage to new heights, all set against a killer 80s-inspired soundtrack packed with arena-rock anthems that defined the decade. Join us as the three of us break down the movie, its legacy, and whether this slice of 80s cinema magic is more than just cheesy patriotism wrapped in a boxing glove. B-T and Sal's segment ricocheted between Sal's sudden anxiety over colon cancer after reading about Dawson's Creek star James Van Der Beek, and a furious debate over baseball's rules. Sal's co-host pressed him to schedule the colonoscopy, even jokingly suggesting it would interrupt the show. The conversation then abruptly pivoted to David Cone confusing Rocky III and Rocky IV—a gaffe B-T saw as an unforgivable baseball broadcast sin—before a caller reminded them of a controversial World Series catch rule from the previous year, highlighting the inconsistent knowledge and accountability across both health and sports analysis.
Sal and BT dissected the overwhelming negativity surrounding New York sports, focusing on the winless Giants and Jets, while Sal wrestled with whether to attend the Giants' Sunday Night game. The conversation shifted to the Mets' perilous final three games, with Sal doubting their pitching depth and BT defending rookie ace McLain. The discussion took a lighter turn when Sal and BT mocked David Cone for confusing Rocky III and Rocky IV during a recent broadcast, a cinematic blunder Sal deemed unforgivable. Amidst the sports talk, Sal also revealed his anxiety over potential health issues after reading a sobering article, showing that the misery of the New York teams is only one part of the show's dynamic content.
This segment is a high-energy dive into the Jaxson Dart debut for the Giants, with Sal and BT debating whether the team's abysmal foundation—poor offensive line, lame-duck coach Brian Daboll, and constant negativity—is setting the rookie up for failure, mirroring the struggles of past quarterbacks. They ridicule Giants fans for flying "clean house" banners over MetLife, arguing it's the wrong time for negativity. On the baseball side, they analyze the Mets' slim playoff hopes against the Marlins, with Sal remaining skeptical due to the lack of pitching, while BT is more optimistic. The Yankees, conversely, are lauded for their strong play, with BT and Costas agreeing they have a "championship look" and are poised to win the AL East. The segment wraps with a lighthearted but fiery call-out of David Cone for confusing Rocky III and Rocky IV and Nick Costos providing his best NFL Week 4 bets and a Perfect Parlay rundown.

In this special edition of Born to Watch, the team dives back into the deep blue to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Steven Spielberg's iconic 1975 thriller, Jaws. But this isn't just a rewatch, it's a cinematic pilgrimage. Hosts Whitey and Dan welcome special guest Paul Glasby to revisit the film not just in spirit, but in spectacle, attending a screening at Hoyts Tweed City, experiencing this Jaws 50th Anniversary Review on the big screen with recliners, giant Pepsi Maxes, and a crew of unsuspecting newcomers. This episode is more than just a review; it's a tribute. For Whitey, who's marking his own 50th birthday, Jaws isn't just a classic; it's a defining piece of his movie-loving DNA, neck-and-neck with Star Wars and The Empire Strikes Back as his all-time favourite. The team reminisces about the first time they saw the film, how it scarred them from surfing, and the strange magic that Jaws still holds over an audience, even half a century later.Dan, making his debut on a Jaws episode, brings the perspective of a cinema recluse, someone more used to fields and chickens than Dolby sound and John Williams scores. But even he's swept up by the grandeur of the theatrical experience. Paul, a returning guest and self-proclaimed booster-seat podcaster, shares a British kid's perspective on Jaws' TV legacy, recalling its 3D TV gimmicks and how the film once ruled Saturday night telly. But seeing it on the big screen? That's another beast entirely.Throughout the episode, the guys reflect on Spielberg's breakout masterpiece, how a 27-year-old director, working with malfunctioning mechanical sharks and intense studio pressure, managed to craft a film that changed cinema forever. There's plenty of love for the gritty film stock, practical effects, and Spielberg's decision to show less rather than more. The now-famous story about the shark not working—leading to a suspenseful masterclass in implication over gore—gets its well-deserved praise. They also unpack the movie's unforgettable score, with Paul comparing John Williams' two-note theme to the Rocky IV training montage, so iconic that it shapes the entire experience. For Dan, the real terror lies in the opening scene, all shadows and suggestion. For Whitey, it's the rich character work, Quint's haunted Indianapolis speech, Hooper's dry wit, and Brody's quiet resolve that keep the film swimming in the top tier of cinema history. The episode isn't just nostalgia-heavy; it's a call to arms. Why don't we watch classic films in the cinema more often? Why isn't there a chain of retro movie houses showing Jaws, Alien, The Exorcist, and Boogie Nights on the regular? Dan offers a deeper look into the decline of cinema attendance, post-COVID challenges, and how theatres now survive on mega-drinks and bar-style concessions. But the gang also sees an opportunity: could Born to Watch host monthly screenings of classics? Would audiences come? There's also plenty of fun tangents, dodgy car park stories, oversized soft drinks, generational lines drawn by Paddington in Peru, and roasting fellow podcasters for their Marvel movie hot takes. Expect talk of Spielberg's filmography, the state of modern blockbusters, and whether Top Gun: Maverick or Avengers: Endgame can hold a candle to the cultural typhoon that Jaws was in 1975.In true Born to Watch style, the episode blends deep cinematic appreciation with pub-style banter, bringing in kids' reactions, audience dynamics, and even some surprising praise for Richard Dreyfuss's underrated turn as Hooper. For a film that's been endlessly dissected, this conversation feels fresh, personal, and anchored by genuine love for cinema.Whether you're a longtime fan or a landlocked Gen Z who's never felt the terror of a dorsal fin rising from the surf, this episode is a reminder of why we watch, why we return, and why, 50 years later, Jaws still bites.JOIN THE CONVERSATIONIs Jaws still the scariest movie ever made—or did the rubber shark finally lose its bite? Should Mayor Vaughn have been eaten first?Would YOU get in the water with Hooper, Brody, and a barrel full of bad ideas?Drop us a voicemail at https://www.borntowatch.com.au and share your Jaws hot takes.Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your pods. On this episode of 80s Flick Flashback, we're diving into a film that followed a surprising stumble for one of the biggest action stars of the decade: Sylvester Stallone's Rambo III.In 1987, Sylvester Stallone seemed invincible. After dominating the box office in 1985 with Rocky IV and Rambo: First Blood Part II, and cementing his action hero status with 1986's Cobra, his grip on Hollywood's action throne appeared unshakable. Yet, his 1987 arm-wrestling epic, Over the Top, shockingly bombed. For his next move, Stallone returned to one of his most iconic characters. This brings us to the 1988 sequel that is often seen as the most outlandish entry in the franchise. The story finds John Rambo leaving his tranquil life in a monastery to rescue his mentor, Colonel Trautman, from the clutches of the Soviet army in Afghanistan. Teaming up with the Mujahideen, Rambo unleashes his signature brand of explosive warfare. Rhode Island's multi-platinum John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band, will be celebrating 50+ years in the business with the release of "Sound of Waves," a new 13 song album, their first in 37 years. In 1982, John Cafferty was commissioned to write and perform the soundtrack for a film that turned out to be "Eddie and the Cruisers,' a rock cult classic with a triple platinum soundtrack. Cafferty's soulful, raspy voice propelled the movie's theme "On the Dark Side" to # 1 on the Billboard Rock charts and the MTV video charts, while the movie's second hit "Tender Years" rose into the Top 10 of the Billboard AC charts. Today John Cafferty and the Beaver Brown Band continue to tour around the world. That tour will bring them to NYC for an album release concert at the Cutting Room on Thursday, April 10th, the same date as the album release, from Moonstone Music. According to Cafferty, the new album almost didn't happen. After almost four decades of not writing and recording new music, he was encouraged by Bruce Springsteen to do it again. Over the years, Cafferty and company have jammed on stage with many of the greats of rock and roll, including Bob Seger, Bruce Springsteen, Jon Bon Jovi, Dion, and opened on tour with the Beach Boys, Foreigner, and Bryan Adams. Starting May 28th, Cafferty joins Rick Springfield on his "I Want My 80s Tour" for selected dates, along with John Waite and Wang Chung."The 'Sound of Waves' album is a celebration of a lifetime legacy as musicians and 50+ years as a band. The songs are newly written with a respectful reflection of colors from an era of music's diverse history and the precious life moments and loving relationships that have served as our hearts' inspiration," said Cafferty. The title track from the group's 1985 album, "Tough All Over" became their second # 1 on the Billboard Rock Charts and the song "C-I-T-Y" reached the Billboard Top 20. Over the years, John has placed 35 songs in major motion pictures. They included Sylvester Stallone's "Rocky "IV," and "Cobra." The Farrelly Brothers hit films "There's Something About Mary" and "Dumb and Dumber Too," & Eddie and the Cruisers I and II. The lead single from the group's upcoming album is "Day In the Sun," which was spotlighted in Peter Farrelly's film "Rick Stanicky." Here's a video link of a live performance: Https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1xHCR8BDus All songs on the new release were written by Cafferty. The Rhode Island rockers put out their first "Greatest Hits" album in 2022 on Iconoclassic Records. In addition to band founder Cafferty, two original members remain in the group.
