On this week’s edition of Sustainability Now!, your host, Justin Mog, pedals in for another conversation with Chris Glasser, Executive Director of Bicycling For Louisville, a community partner of Forward Radio. This time, we focus on state-wide transportation policy and its impact on Louisville. KYTC’s SHIFT plan: In 2016, Gov. Matt Bevin directed the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) to develop a process to better allocate the Commonwealth's limited transportation funds. The Strategic Highway Investment Formula for Tomorrow (SHIFT) was the result (https://transportation.ky.gov/SHIFT). Chris Glasser created an interactive map showing how SHIFT would impact Jefferson County and published it in a May 2019 Insider Louisville article entitled "State SHIFTs Priorities Away From Louisville’s Transportation Master Plan.” You can explore the map at https://www.google.com/maps/d/viewer?mid=15Aahr75LpSSVkM8T9HJUOe5ybRkq04wk&usp=sharing We also discuss the potential of a newly elected Democratic governor on state transportation policy and Beshear’s appointment of Jim Grey as the new Transportation Secretary, in spite of an attempted Republican power-grab bill to strip him of the power to name a state Transportation Secretary. More about that is in Marcus Green's in-depth article on WDRB at https://www.wdrb.com/in-depth/bill-would-strip-kentucky-governor-s-power-to-name-state/article_792d0f44-0fa1-11ea-b858-8f5001b2d491.html) Lastly, we discuss the impact of e-scooters in response to Emma Rubin’s December 4th cover article in the LEO Weekly: Not Just For Fun: The Role Of E-Scooters In Urban Planning: https://www.leoweekly.com/2019/12/not-just-for-fun-the-role-of-e-scooters-in-urban-planning/ Learn more about Bicycling For Louisville and join at http://bicyclingforlouisville.org As always, our feature is followed by your community action calendar for the week, so get your calendars out and get ready to take action for sustainability NOW! This week on Access Louisville we talk about the loss of Insider Louisville. The nonprofit news organization announced it would cease publication on Aug. 7. While Insider was a competitor to Business First, we talk about why this closure is bad news for the city. Fewer news organizations mean fewer eyes and ears keeping tabs on businesses and public officials. While we're on the topic, we also discuss the journalism business as a whole — everything from paywalls to what keeps young people interested in the business.

Only five days have elapsed since our last show, but we had plenty of quick hits to cover -- the end of Insider Louisville, Andy Beshear's ethics plan, Sen. Dan Seum's endorsement of Andy Beshear, and plenty more!

The day after Christmas is always busy at shopping malls. The holiday blockbusters are in the movie theaters, and gift cards are burning holes in pockets. But this year on Dec. 26, security at the Mall St. Matthews was apparently overwhelmed by the number of teenagers in the mall. What exactly happened and how many young shoppers were there remain in question. What we know for sure, though, is that local news media seized on the word "riot" in reporting on the incident — despite a lack of injuries, arrests or property damage, and the insistence of many eyewitnesses that no riots occurred. On this week's show, we talk about the closure of the mall, the media's reaction and the story's racial overtones with WFPL's urban affairs reporter Jacob Ryan, who reported on the incident and the response to it, and attorney Joe Dunman, who wrote an opinion piece about it for Insider Louisville.

Brent Goodin, Master Distiller at Boundary Oak Distillery, discusses his new startup distillery and how his first bottle of bourbon off the line sold for $28,000                    - What’s your bourbon story? Do you have an earliest moment with bourbon? - Are you picking up the family lineage of getting back into the bourbon industry? - What led you to becoming a Master Distiller? Any influencers along the way? - How long have you been practicing your trade? - Where does the name Boundary Oak come from? - Where is your location in relation to the Kentucky Bourbon Trail? - I don’t get to use this word very often, but What’s it mean to be the first distiller in Hardin County after a “centennial plus some”? - There was an Insider Louisville article lately that talked about a record being broken for the most paid for a first bottle of bourbon. Talk about that - Any skeptics or hypothesis to who this donor was? - Most consumers think 2 year old bourbon is under-aged. Are you doing something different to age your bourbon to make it more appealing? - How big is your operation? and how many barrels can you age? - Are you thinking you are going to have multiple brands or mix them all together to have a consistent flavor? - What price point are you targeting? - As with most distillery startups, you already have a product for sale, Kentucky Amber, talk about it a bit - How can people get a hold of you and learn more about the distillery?
