Holly Guertin is a contemporary fiber artist and textile designer in the Philadelphia, PA area. In her work, she explores the interconnectedness of the human person and invites her viewers to look at sheep and their wool as if in a mirror. In an increasingly disconnected, disembodied, and virtual world, her process-intense work grounds the viewer to the tactile and the real, showing the human experience as a marvel and a wonder. Holly graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) with a BFA in Fibers in 2011 and has been working in textiles and fiber arts ever since. Aside from her fiber artwork, she also creates textile designs for fashion brands. Her artwork has been featured in publications like Colossal, Business of Home, Frankie Magazine, and Knit Wit Magazine, among others. Cerebral Women Art Talks Podcast

Ep.222 José Parlá (b.1973) creates paintings and multidisciplinary works based on his interest in hybrid forms of abstraction. He draws inspiration from various mediums including music, calligraphy, dance, and the decay of urban architecture and advertisements. His works poetically challenge ideas about language, politics, identity, and how we define places and spaces. Parlá's relationship with mark-making is physical and textural, incorporating the body's gestures into a painterly stream of consciousness composed of areas of addition, erasure, and layering that challenge the status quo of visual culture. Parlá was born to Cuban parents in Miami, Florida, and lives and works out of Brooklyn, New York. He studied painting at Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD) in Savannah, Georgia; the New World School of the Arts, Miami, Florida; and Miami Dade College, Miami, Florida. The Film Industry and Georgia's Tax Credits: Georgia's generous tax credits have transformed the state into a filmmaking hub with a massive economic impact. Karen highlights the significance of these credits and how they have attracted big studios, making Georgia second only to California in producing blockbuster movies. However, the challenge remains to create a sustainable year-round industry with benefits for all stakeholder.  This includes both ends of the spectrum - helping creatives understand what is needed to attract funding and includes attracting and educating private investors to back projects with the great potential. 3. Jon Gosier's Entrepreneurial Journey: Learn from Jon's journey, from his early days as a graduate of the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), where he focused on the technology side of the music industry, to being recognized as one of the "new faces of Black Leadership" by TIME Magazine. Brandie Townsend grew up on a dairy farm in western New York and knew the importance of environmental sustainability from a young age. She attended the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) and received a master's degree in architecture. Fueled by a desire to build and create, it led her into various industries, but all of those industries included her original passion for sustainability. Her experience includes hospitality (InterContinental Hotels Group, Marriott, and Rubicon Global), government (City of Atlanta), consulting, and starting recycling and waste removal businesses. Through her studies at SCAD, she learned the basics of building, but over time she has learned about the importance of green building – constructing and deconstructing buildings with the environment in mind. The Construction and Demolition (C&D) industry has been at a crossroads in terms of unbuilding. Buildings are dismantled for a number of reasons - it could be for safety, space, rebuilding, etc. It isn't the reason for unbuilding that puts the C&D industry at a crossroads - however, it's the process of demolition versus deconstruction. Demolition takes the form of complete destruction, an example being dynamite used to implode buildings. In contrast, deconstruction looks at all of the internal elements of the building to find new uses. With the C&D industry being the most significant contributor to greenhouse gases, deconstruction becomes even more critical.

If asked, Ms. Thame would describe herself as an architect for television and feature films, bringing obscure ideas and fantastical art concepts to reality so that construction teams can build environments for the actors to bring to life. Her digital modeling tools include Autodesk Revit, McNeel Rhinocerous3D, Unreal Engine, and Blender3D, among others. She has the skill to take abstract scratches on a napkin and turn them into realistic spaces (with all the correct building proportions) that ultimately support the cast and crew to operate safely and tell a story effectively.Miss Thame has worked on a wide range of projects from tent-pole features for Marvel like Black Panther 2: Wakanda Forever, Guardians of the Galaxy 2, and WB's upcoming Latin American superhero, Blue Beetle, indie films such as Universal's Please Don't Destroy, New Line Cinema's TAG, and FilmNation's McDonald's-origin bio-drama, The Founder, streaming products for Netflix like Hillbilly Elegy and True Memoirs of An International Assassin, culturally relevant mini-series like 20th Century FOX's Genius: Aretha, to episodic series like CW's Dynasty, BET's Being Mary Jane, AMC's Hap & Leonard and OWN's beloved mega-church drama, Greenleaf. Presently, she is working on an undisclosed adventure series in Dallas, Texas.Ms. Thame pivoted to this industry after years as a project manager for boutique construction firms and a marketing manager with the wood division of Herman Miller, a corporate furniture design company. After being passed over for promotions and finally laid off during the 2008 financial market crash, she decided to retrain and pursue her true passion, storytelling on the big screen. Ms. Thame, already endowed with qualifications from Georgia Institute of Technology, one Bachelor of Science in Industrial Design and the other in Industrial Engineering, returned to school for a Masters of Arts in Production Design from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) at their headquarters in Savanah, Georgia. The next phase of her career resides in combing the lessons from her parents and teaching these skillsets of designing environments to other people worldwide, especially girls like herself who know nothing about using these tools or have access to them. Ms. Thame plans on one day telling her own stories, which include more people like her parents because, as she says, "no matter how small we think we are, our stories are worth telling too!” website: www.ythame.comLinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/ythame/Now is a great time to act on your dreams! A true explorer and creative, Atlanta artist Meredith Ochoa has been reinventing alternative and digital processes since 2007. As part of her body of work, Meredith has developed a new portable scanning process in which the subject becomes the "negative" through digital degradation with a portable wand of light. The portable scanner describes the subject through a life-size depiction of the number of pixels the subject amounts to. Meredith received her Masters of Art from Savannah College of Art & Design (SCAD)and has recently started a 13-year 'Every Phase' series revealing how she healed herself from Endometriosis with the lesser-known feminine infradian rhythm clock in contrast to the masculine, 24-hour clock or 'every day' lifestyle. The series is also a direct response to and inspired by Beeple's $70 million 'Everydays' NFT project. Jessica sits down to Meredith to learn about her journey of overcoming significant obstacles and challenges to find her creative self and authentic approach to building relationships with her collectors. Have you sometimes felt stuck trying to move forward in your career or business? Have you struggled to figure out what you wanted to do when times got tough? Loving and choosing to live your life isn't one that should be dictated by life's circumstances but by intentional action and internal clarity. My guest today is someone who chooses to live life intentionally and creatively with some unexpected twists and turns she leveraged for the best. Merline Labissiere started from humble beginnings, following her passions into the world of fashion design and ultimately being awarded a spot on the Emmy Winning Show Project Runway for 2 seasons. In this episode, Merline discusses her secret to designing the life you want and overcoming some unexpected roadblocks. We also dig deep into other topics such as strategic pivoting, clarifying your goals, and how to uncover new streams of income. You don't want to miss this energetic, inspirational, and highly informative interview. About Merline: Merline Labissiere, a Miami- based designer, fell in love with the idea of marrying architecture and fashion design at an early age. The young Haitian-American designer graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) with a bachelor's degree in Fashion Design in 2011. Although pursuing a degree in architecture brought her to SCAD, Merline discovered fashion was the fuel to her creative passion. Her architectural background continues to inspire her designs and other avenues of art. As a Project Runway Season 14 contestant airing on Lifetime, Merline got the opportunity to design a winning look that was manufactured and sold nationwide for Heid Klum's intimate's line. Along with her passion for fashion, her brand “Merline Labissiere” started a non-profit teaching fashion in inner-city youth. Recently, she has given presentations on her journey in entrepreneurship and starting a non-profit to students and alumni at the SCAD Museum of Art. Merline's passion to combine fashion and architecture and show the world a new perspective appears in every piece designed for the creative woman working in a professional environment.

Join Andy Meyer and Jon Rubin on a journey back in time with visually enticing descriptions of Andy's parents', "bright yellow, linoleum, rotary phone in the 1950's kitchen," and "the bullhorn at The Grateful Dead Concert at Bucknell in Davis Stadium."   From Mafia-esque encounters with the one-and-only Jimmy Hoffa, to transporting suitcases of money after the Bucknell Concerts, Andy recalls his days on the Bucknell Concert Committee transitioning from being “student 7962” to suddenly becoming a one-manned COMMITTEE. Andy and Jon look back at the legacy Andy created by booking memorable, historic, and wildly popular concerts at the little Bucknell University with 2,500 students with insanely popular bands like: The Grateful Dead, The Band, The Beach Boys, Sly and The Family Stone, Donovan, Levon Helm, Miles Davis, The Association, Judy Collins, Smokey Robinson and the Miracles, and Robbie Robertson! Andy even ingeniously included the students 30 minutes down the road from Penn!   Tune in to learn what happened when Sly and the Family Stone demanded $2,500 cash before performing and who Andy had to get involved to make it happen. Andy explains why he ended up in the geographical location he was in and the history that played into him writing Dancing in the Seats, which was published by Billboard and put him on A&M Records' radar.   Listen to find out how Andy Meyer's legacy still lives on today!   Subscribe, rate and review us online.    Follow The Meyer Chronicles on social media:   Twitter Instagram Facebook   Hot Pie Media is an on-demand digital audio/video entertainment network with interests primarily in the creation of original, relevant and entertaining podcasts.   The Meyer Chronicles, hosted by Hollywood executive producer Andy Meyer and TV/music producer Jon Rubin, take listeners on a journey behind the scenes of the film and music industries. In this podcast, Geoff & Gerry speak with Allison Mrugal. Allison is a professional mountain-biker who started cycling fairly late after spending many years playing soccer and doing gymnastics. Encouraged by her parents and having joined the local West Chester Cycling Team, Allison started cycling more and more. In college, she picked up her first wins, racing collegiate road and mountain-bike.  At that moment she started thinking about setting goals to become a pro-cyclist. When Allison completed her under graduate, she continued with her graduate program at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). The SCAD athletic cycling program took Allison to the next level. We discussed the importance of coaching and mentors to support you and achieve the desired growth. It was great to hear how Allison found her current team “KS Kenda Women MTB” and learn about her view on; not only learning the physical and technical aspects of cycling, but also learning the business side of cycling.Of course, we spent time on Covid-19 and setting short and mid-term goals to be ready when eventually racing starts back up again. Yes, Zwift was mentioned too ;-)It was great to see pro cycling from a young and upcoming talent's point of view. Geoff and Gerry are confident that this podcast is a great listen to anyone passionate about cycling and curious about what it take to evolve from group rides, racing, collegiate racing to professional racing.Team Sponsors:KS Kenda Women (https://kskendawomenmtb.com) KS Suspension (https://www.kssuspension.com/product/lev-ci/) Kenda Tire (https://bicycle.kendatire.com/en-us/find-a-tire/bicycle/cross-country-marathon/booster-pro/) Shimano (https://bike.shimano.com/en-US/product/component/xtr.html)Orange Seal (https://shop.orangeseal.com/collections/all) Voler Apparel (https://www.voler.com)Pivot Cycles (https://store.pivotcycles.com/en/bike-mach-4-sl-1) Fox (https://www.ridefox.com/family.php?m=bike&family=32) GU Energy Labs (https://guenergy.com/products/energy-gel)100% https://www.100percent.com/collections/racetrapLazer Sport (https://lazersport.us/collections/road/products/g1mips?variant=33411045195911)ESI Grips (https://esigrips.com/mtb-grips/extra-chunky-orange) Dryve Wheels (https://www.dryvewheels.com/collections/dirt/products/xc-29)Tasco MTB (https://www.tasco-mtb.com)Wend Waxworks (https://wendperformance.com/buy-online/chain-wax-kit-2) Stikrd (https://stikrd.com)Personal Sponsors:CTS (https://trainright.com) Lowland Cycling:https://linktr.ee/Lowlandscycling

In our first season of Shaping Cities, Ticco is partnering up with professional organizations that serve the people who design, build, and manage the cities and communities we live in. In Episode 3 of this season, we collaborated with the National Trust for Historic Preservation. For 70 years, the National Trust for Historic Preservation has led the movement to save America’s historic places. In addition to grassroots advocacy, the organization serves as the primary professional association for preservation professionals through online professional development content and their annual PastForward conference. Sehila Mota Casper sat down with us to talk about her work as a preservationist, and how it takes shape through her role as Senior Field Officer in Houston, Texas with the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Sehila leads efforts on-the ground in Houston on behalf of the organization, and spends much of her time connecting with local organizations and building support for at-risk sites. Sehila earned her MFA in Historic Preservation from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD.) Through her work, Sehila advocates for a more diverse preservation practice by serving on the Executive Committee of Latin@s in Heritage Conservation,  the National Collaborative for Women’s History Sites board, and as a Diversity and Inclusion Liaison for the National Trust. Important Notes: In this episode, host Erik Felix at one point referred to the Department of the Interior Standards as the “National Trust for Historic Preservation guidelines.” Note that this is incorrect - standards and guidelines for the treatment and protection of historic properties are set by the federal government through the Department of the Interior, and not through the National Trust (a non-governmental organization.) In our conversation regarding representation among sites on the National Register of Historic Places, it was said that no more than 10% of sites are associated with diverse histories. The exact number changes each year as more sites are listed on the register, and this number was derived from an article written for CityLab in 2019.  Follow TICCO: Join Free | Instagram | Twitter | LinkedIn | FacebookFollow the National Trust: Website | Twitter | Facebook | Instagram | LinkedInConnect with Sehila Mota Casper: LinkedIn | Instagram

Welcome to the Design Thinking 101 podcast! I'm Dawan Stanford, your host. Today's  Guest is Brittany Merkle. Her design path started at the University of Virginia in the College of Arts and Sciences. During her first semester, her grandfather was diagnosed with cancer. On weekend trips home, Brittany witnessed the incredible service Hospice offered. When she returned for her second year at college, she immediately changed majors and enrolled in nursing. Brittany shadowed nursing students and learned what nursing looked like as a career.   She jumped into qualitative research and realized she wanted her career to combine two things: 1. Creativity, and 2. Make a difference. "These two seemed very siloed in my mind," Brittany remarked.  She hadn’t yet considered fusing these two aspects into one career.   Brittany wasn't sure where she wanted to go for graduate school, when she came across the Savannah College of Art and Design. She started with Hospice Case Management, but continued to think of service design in relation to her profession. Brittany enrolled in the SCAD Master's program and started to unlearn her previous content she learned from her Bachelor’s degree, which was her biggest challenge. She was one of the first nurses to graduate from the SCAD program.   She was looking for a new approach to bring to the healthcare system, which she found as a lead innovation strategist with the University's healthcare team. Brittany wanted to make her mark in the system and to challenge herself with the design skills she has learned.   Bio Brittany Merkle, RN, BSN, supports the innovation and design thinking efforts in UH Ventures. She graduated from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing with distinction, and is graduating from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) with a Master of Fine Arts in Service Design.   She is one of the first nurses to graduate from SCAD, and the first in the country with this specific degree combination. She has experience in Hospice Case Management, and in acute and urgent care services as a practicing Registered Nurse before she began pursuing her Master's. Her thesis focused on service design as a lens for nursing innovation.   Brittany is passionate about the demystification of innovation and catalyzing innovative behavior amongst healthcare providers and caregivers. Her work is focused on enhancing patient and provider experiences through innovative care models and digital tools.   In This Episode [01:13] Brittany’s background and path to design thinking.  [03:40] Her realization of what she wanted to do with her career. Welcome to the Design Thinking 101 podcast! I'm Dawan Stanford, your host. Today I'll be interviewing Maurício Manhães and talking about his design position at Savannah College of Art and Design, his work at the Service Design Network and as the group leader at the Design Academic Task Force. In this episode, we talk about the crisis that caused Maurício to shift into service design, how service designers are learning their craft, and his work to create service design curriculum for non-designers. We’ll explore Maurício's 15-year background in IT and marketing, and his reaction to having a failed project. He couldn't figure out why his project was received poorly by his client until he discovered that he didn't understand the people he was designing for. This was when he found design thinking. Maurício was intrigued by how service design was based on a complex and systemic approach to social technical design. Through this revelation, he understood his approach to design and problem-solving was flawed. At this point, he decided to return to school. He received a Master's Degree in Knowledge Management, and then a Ph.D, and he then started teaching service design at the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). Since Maurício joined SCAD, their program has gained over two dozen students, making their program one of the largest in the world. Students come with curious minds, wanting to know how they can involve stakeholders in the design process and have a better perspective on the social technical design context. Maurício talks about how he and his department at SCAD are adding new courses pertaining to design to enhance the degree, including how innovation is understood in an adaptive system. The program is very demanding, resulting in two-thirds of the program's students being hired one year before they graduate. This episode also offers a look at providing the perspective of the complex and active systems of design thinking to non-designers. Maurício explains how he conveys this complex concept to creators without a design background. He also delves into the ethics of service design, the illusion of being able to change a person’s behavior, and common issues first year designers have when they start their career.   Bio Maurício Manhães is a Professor of Service Design at the Savannah College of Art and Design and an Associate Design Researcher at Livework and the group leader of the Service Design Network Academic Task Force. In 2015, he obtained a Doctoral degree in Knowledge Management with a focus on service innovation at the Federal University of Santa Catarina in Brazil in partnership with the Koeln International School of Design in Germany with the thesis "Innovativeness and Prejudice: Designing a Landscape of Diversity for Knowledge Creation." In addition to his professorship, he works on consultancy projects and conducts workshops, courses, and lectures on design, design research, and service innovation worldwide.   In This Episode [01:10] Maurício’s journey from IT project management into design thinking. [04:50] He gives background on SCAD department and his role in this department. [06:54] SCAD department and how their cohort has grown.[11:16] Curriculum changes to the complexity of the design program at SCAD. [12:34] Maurício talks about why they are adding complex adaptive systems to the curriculum at SCAD. [14:09] Two-thirds of students are hired one year before graduation. [16:06] How service design theory and service design logic prepares students for design at high levels. [17:53] How Maurício is bridging the gap between learning service design and the perspective of the complex and active systems of design thinking. [22:24] Teaching service design to non-designers. Remember that our social currency is defined by the quality of our engagement and not necessarily the quantity of followers. At the end of the day, human beings make decisions emotionally. We use reason to rationalize a decision we’ve already made. If you can conjure up emotion in a target audience and that emotion is what drives them to take action, you’ve won. Shownotes: [05:15]At the end of the day, I think water is sexy. [5:53] I don’t see why there needs to be a distance between the way we market a Tiffany ring and the way we communicate about water. [6:13] Stop thinking about water as a utility, as something people don’t want to hear about, as some second-rate product or service and start treating it with the respect it deserves. [7:05] The book–Contagious: Why Things Catch On–breaks down certain components that make communications viral, shareable, sticky. [7:23] The class–Creating Contagion: From Experience to Entertainment–discusses ways to be at the forefront of communications by focusing first on the entertainment value of the communication and the utility of it–what it provides the end-user, rather than the message and how to sell it. [8:54] Five elements of story: Character, Plot, Setting, Tension/Conflict, and Resolution. Story is the fundamental thing that makes any kind of communication worth communicating. [9:30] Story–it’s a drug, leverage the addiction. [10:40] Communication is easy? HA! (Rabbit hole!) [12:16] 360-degrees of sticky: a class project involving students to create an omnichannel campaign (which refers to using multiple channels – surround sound) [14:38] Triggers–anything you can attach a “call to action” to–attaching the purchase or use of the product to smells, taste, shape, color to conjure top of mind thinking. When it’s top of mind they take action. [18:22 ] Remarkability-anything worth remarking about, repeating, sharing. [18:43] People are impressed with innovation–it’s a currency all on its own. [18:56] An example of remarkable innovation–predictive audio [22:42] Water nerds: we have to tell the story of our passion! [23:05] Water should be a luxury brand. [23:36] Currency of Clout: (social currency) the value that your followers place on whatever information it is you want to share with them–that beats the number of followers you have. Quality over quantity. [24:40] Positive Influence: Fyre Festival [27:49] Negative Influence: Snooki [29:19] Gamification–application of gaming principles, competition, to a commercial communication. Think fit tech. [30:20] How Dr. Dre and Beats by Dre teaches us about data and measurement. [34:39] Keeping our messages simple. [37:30] Campaigns vs. platforms. [38:33] Platform vs your brand. If you want to study service design, you just might want to learn from Maurício Manhães. Manhães is both a professor of service design at the Savannah College of Art and Design—SCAD to its friends—and a truly affable human being. His friendly, informed approach leaps out from the first second of this dialogue with his long-time service design buddy, EPAM Continuum's Jon Campbell. These two vets cover much territory in 30 minutes: Maurício's professional and intellectual journey; the employability of SCAD grads; the function of luck and hard work in design careers; the Service Design Network and its president Birgit Mager (“she way very kind to pay attention to this crazy Brazilian guy”); bringing service design into companies; the way practice and professorship inform each other; the effects of Amazing Grace Syndrome, and, of course, more. Everyone at The Comics Alternative family will miss Andy's wise and engaging reviews and perspectives on children's and young adult comics. In their first show together, Gwen and Paul discuss the newest volume in First Second Books' Science Comics series, Falynn Christine Koch's Bats: Learning to Fly, as well as Ru Xu's fiction (“diesel-punk,” as Paul terms it) graphic novel NewsPrints, published by the GRAPHIX imprint at Scholastic Books. Since its launch in 2016, the Science Comics series has included volumes on coral reefs, volcanoes, and dinosaurs. Geared towards upper elementary and middle school aged readers, Science Comics take advantage of the elements of visual storytelling to put forward scientific information. As the editors point out: “With the increasing ubiquity of visual information,” young readers need to “learn to process and respond to visual content, and comics are an incredibly effective medium for exploring visual literacy.” Regular listeners to the podcast may remember that Gwen and Andy reviewed Dinosaurs by M.K. Reed and Joe Flood in their March 2016 YR show, and many of the elements that they praised, including the accessibility of scientific information, as well as the use of humor, appear in Koch's volume, as well. Bats: Learning to Fly encourages young readers to understand the important role that bats play in the ecosystem, to overcome their fear of bats, and to learn how they can become involved in protecting and caring for bats. In addition to providing a great deal of information on various species of Bats, Koch creates a narrative in which a teenage girl, Sarah, volunteers at a bat rehabilitation center after her parents overreact to a bat and injure it. Lil' Brown, as the bat is known, is both a character in that narrative and a narrative presence in his own right, as he directly addresses the reader at various points regarding his own anatomy and role in the ecosystem. As part of their discussion, Paul and Gwen consider how young readers might respond to the way information is imparted in the comic, and they look forward to Koch's upcoming volume for the Science Comics series, Plagues: The Microscopic Battlefield, due out in August, 2017. Koch recently graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD), and Gwen and Paul discuss how her precision drawings and humor-filled text combine to create a text that will delight readers, while encouraging them to appreciate how they can play a role in scientific study by volunteering to rehabilitate bats or building bat houses for their backyards. Next, Gwen and Paul discuss another debut comic from a SCAD graduate. NewsPrints is written and drawn by Ru Xu, a comics creator who was born in Beijing, immigrated to Indianapolis as a young child, and has had a lifelong love of comics from a variety of traditions, including manga, European comics, and even superhero comics. NewsPrints takes place in a fictional diesel-punk world where the land of Nautilene is torn by war and a newspaper called The Bugle is the only media outlet left that is still reporting the truth. The protagonist, Blue, is a rare kind of newsboy in a society that counts on its newsboys to shout out the headlines and sell papers…and that's because Blue is not a boy, but a girl, orphaned by the war and adopted by the family who owns the newspaper. Blue sets out to provide that one doesn't have to be a boy to be vital in the news business, and along the way, readers are introduced to a cast of characters such as Jack, the eccentric and secretive inventor; Crow, a strange kid who remains wrapped in a scarf and in mysteries of his own; and Goldie, Blue's loyal canary, who matches Blue's welcoming of people and spirit of flight. As part of their discussion, Paul and Gwen praise Xu's mastery of many genres of comics, including her ability to meld various traditional forms into an entirely unique story world. Thus, while the text shares much in common with recent fantasy releases, including Faith Erin Hicks' The Nameless City and Jorge Corona's Feathers, NewsPrints stands on its own, with a vast, inviting story space and a focus on issues of truth and representation that are ever more a part of our own political and social climate. Paul praised Xu's deft handling of interactions among characters, and Gwen expressed her admiration for Xu's use of color and shading to help set the mood and to ease transitions across the comic. Given the book's indeterminate ending, Paul and Gwen look forward to the series continuing into additional volumes, and they dwell on Xu's treatment of gender and ethnicity in thoughtful ways. He also recently helped design the first of its kind undergraduate degree in User Experience Design at Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD). He’s currently working with other design leaders to elevate the craft of design in emerging design cities and is an investor and advisor to many awesome companies. Previously, Mike co-founded the design agency Cuban Council with his friends and collaborators, Toke Nygaard and Michael Schmidt. They created a company that could focus on making great things the way they thought it should be made. In their 10 year run, they were able to design cutting edge digital product design solutions for companies like Facebook, Google, Zendesk, Rdio, Quora, Evernote, and Epitaph Records. "It's hugely important to understand what you're capable of contributing and being surprised with the outcome when you partner with someone that brings a different aspect to the work.... When you collaborate with people and get their input and perspective it can be extraordinary and that's what gets me out of bed every day." Back in day as a “Creative Developer”, he helped usher in early generations of web designers and digital product designers through his commitment and contributions to sites like k10k.net, newstoday.com, designiskinky.net, and many more. On this episode we discuss: How Mike helps evangelize, elevate, and grow design at Google by working with a wide array of design teams, design leadership, business units, partners, and agencies. What it was like doing web design back in the old school days when folks were hacking art and code to make unique web site and discovering the vast opportunities. Remember pixel fonts? The story of building Newstoday.com. His experience being hired by Brett Gurewitz from Bad Religion (one of his personal heros) to redesign Epitaph Record’s. How Cuban Council was started, how they grew, and why they eventually closed the doors. Why collaboration and a perspective of value is important to doing great work, and why it's important to always be sharing. Why designers needing to trust and believe that we’re “doing what’s right for people most of the time” and that before being able to deliver a argument that's convincing and compelling, you have to be confident. The story about a time when a young Mark Zuckerberg asked him to define design while they were working on the Facebook Logo.
