The Rocky Road
Robbie Murray - The Future of Boxing

The Rocky Road

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 14, 2025 68:38

Robbie Murray is a former undefeated professional boxer who defied the odds to achieve success in the ring. As a boy, he battled severe asthma and depended on the use of daily oxygen masks, and at that stage a future life as a sportsman seemed a million miles away. But boxing helped him build up his lung capacity and ultimately, he found success in the amateurs before turning pro in 2001, fighting out of Breen's Gym in Belfast and representing Dublin. He trained and sparred alongside the likes of Neil Sinclair, Eamonn Magee and Paul McCloskey in an era when fellow 140lb boxers Shea Neary, Ricky Hatton and Francie Barrett, his old amateur rival, were making waves. His biggest night came in '05 when he beat Peter McDonagh for the Irish title at the National Stadium – and bigger nights looked to be on the horizon. But he instead decided to hang up his gloves, his hunger satisfied, health intact, and pursue another legacy in the sport. Robbie became a full-time performance coach and took over his old amateur club, St Matthews in Ballyfermot. Coaching opened his eyes to the need for a fairer – and safer – system in underage boxing. He developed Fight Ireland in a bid to achieve proper matchmaking, knowing there are levels to the game, which he hopes will come back online soon. He then developed the Boxing Winner app, which provides a structured learning and development pathway for boxers of all levels. And The Rocky Road visited Murray in Ballyer to check out his newest venture which could end up changing the sport entirely – simulated boxing. Making boxing safer is something everyone wants but few know how that can be achieved. It is a brutal sport and those who enter it usually do so with their eyes wide open. Fights are fights, rounds are rounds, punishment is taken and dished out. It is the hurt game. Murray has recently completed a masters degree in sports performance analysis and time will tell if his research and methods are adapted to allow fighters worldwide to prepare in a safer way in future. This episode of The Rocky Road is dedicated to John Cooney, an Irish boxing warrior who tragically lost his life following a Celtic title fight at the Ulster Hall in February 2025. Hosted on Acast. But while a huge proportion of any given congregation will likely have experienced menopause, it still remains largely unacknowledged, unspoken and unaddressed. It is almost entirely taboo as a topic of conversation in churches. Writing with refreshing frankness, popular blogger and broadcaster Jayne Manfredi uses biblical reflection, prophetic storytelling and prayer to journey with those experiencing “the dreaded m word”. Facing the menopause head-on, and by turns hilarious and moving, Waking the Women offers a challenge to destigmatize women's experiences by opening up the conversation around midlife and ageing in the church.

About Alex Alex is the vicar of St Matthews church in Burnley you can order his book via this link https://brownsbfs.co.uk/Product/Frost... Follow him on X @alexdjfrost About Karen theologian with a passion for taking bodies seriously as starting places for theological reflection and construction of reimagined theologies. After a career in secondary education, I undertook an MA in Theology and Religious Studies at the University of Nottingham (2013) with a thesis on Marian Temple Typology. This lead me to doctoral study at the University of Exeter (2016) for a PhD in Theology and Religion. My doctoral thesis was focused on the emerging field of Trauma Theology and the ways this intersects with the Eucharist and the body of Mary. This work was eventually published as Broken Bodies: The Eucharist, Mary, and the Body in Trauma Theology (SCM Press 2018). After my doctoral work, I held a research fellowship at Durham University where I developed my theological research into bodies and their existence in digital spaces. This led me to a permanent role at Sarum College where I led an MA in Christian Spirituality. During this time, I began a new research project into the impact the experience of reproductive loss, particularly miscarriage, might have on how we construct theology. This work was published as The Dark Womb: Re-Conceiving Theology through Reproductive Loss (SCM Press, 2022). Alongside this research, I have continued to push forward the field of Trauma Theology in both the UK and internationally. This has included the publication of two edited collections with Dr Katie Cross—Feminist Trauma Theologies: Body, Scripture, Church in Critical Perspective and Bearing Witness: Intersectional Perspectives on Trauma Theology—both published with SCM Press. I have also written the first introductory survey of the field of Trauma Theology. I am the Academic Dean at Westcott House - an Anglican Theological College in Cambridge. I teach liturgy, trauma theology, sacramental theology, and pedagogy. I also teach Gender and Christian Theology for the Divinity Faculty at Cambridge University. I supervise a range of PhD projects.

Third Sunday of Advent - John 1:6-8, 19-28 Anne McLean grew up and was educated by the Sisters of Mercy and the Sisters of St Joseph in Bathurst. After a time of teaching in the Western suburbs of Sydney, Anne came to Mudgee. She and her late husband, David, cared for and nurtured their 10 children in Mudgee NSW. When their children began school at St Matthews, David and Anne began their involvement in their education. Anne represented parents of children in Catholic schools at local, diocesan, state and National levels. She has been involved in her local Parish, including Sacramental Programs and various other ministries; she was also member of the Diocesan Pastoral Council. It is with humility and hope that she shares her being received ‘Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice', an honour awarded by the Pope to members of the clergy and laity for service to the Catholic Church. Born in Coonabarabran, Alice Sullivan RSJ is a Sister of St Joseph living in Bathurst. Alice was a primary school teacher in the Diocese of Bathurst for many years and was also involved in youth ministry with her sister, Maria Sullivan RSJ in the Bathurst diocese. After a 5 year period managing a refuge in Sydney, Alice returned to the Bathurst diocese where for 15 years she was the Pastoral Associate in Mudgee. Alice is now involved as a volunteer in ministries in the Cathedral Parish in Bathurst. While in Mudgee, Anne, Alice and Annie Flynn (inaugural participant and collaborator on the development of the book by the same name) developed a program called “Conversations about Catholics” to assist young families navigating the faith journey in their children's lives. This program has been shared with many dioceses and has been a resource which seems to help people in this journey. A link to the program is on the Diocese of Bathurst website.

On this week's Sustainability Now!, your host, Justin Mog, gets his hands dirty with two fellow plant and produce lovers, Noah Curtis, Founder of Pineal Gardens, and Doug Lowry (aka "Plantaclaus”) with the Sowers of Justice Network. Pineal Gardens has launched a new project to make surplus fresh food and plants available to the community through Trading Posts that act much like a Little Free Library or Pantry but for plants and garden produce. They hope to expand to more than the current dozen locations and are looking for potential property owner hosts, especially in West Louisville and other neighborhoods suffering from food apartheid where these plant and food sharing stations can be of tremendous benefit. This is a great way to share extra produce and flowers from your garden, house-plants, and native plant starts with your neighbors! To support the work, you can join the Pineal Facebook group and like the Pineal page but more importantly use and support these trade stations. One way to help get the ball rolling is to post photos of shares in the Pineal Facebook group and other neighborhood groups when you have shared or when you will share, especially given how hot it will be in the weeks ahead. This is next level mutual aid and neighborhoods support! Check out some of the existing stations: 1. 1852 Harvard drive (Highlands) 2. Above the dirt garden shop (J- town) 3. 3804 Billtown road 4. Rainbow blossom (St Matthews) 5. Fern creek high school 6. 1003 Ironwood Ct (Simpsonville) And make plans to joins us for a Plant & Garden Produce Swap on Saturday, July 29th, 9-11am, at the Pineal Trade Station, 1852 Harvard Dr. More info is at https://pinealgarden.com or contact Noah at Pinealgardens@gmail.com or 502-705-1386 As always, our feature is followed by your community action calendar for the week, so get your calendars out and get ready to take action for sustainability NOW! Sustainability Now! is hosted by Dr. Justin Mog and airs on Forward Radio, 106.5fm, WFMP-LP Louisville, every Monday at 6pm and repeats Tuesdays at 12am and 10am. Guest - Josh Suiter, Director of Membership and Business Relations at The Chamber of St. MatthewsYour brand needs to engage in strategic storytelling & create organic experiences, as the costs of paid advertising continue to increase. Plus, the typical brochure copy doesn't work for most brands;  people expect more. Storytelling engages your audience at an emotional level to capture their attention.Pete Docter puts it perfectly: “What you're trying to do, when you tell a story, is to write about an event in your life that made you feel some particular way. And what you're trying to do, when you tell a story, is to get the audience to have that same feeling.”This can work in business. Think about the common question, “tell me  about your business.” Being able to tell a compelling, engaging, and consistent story initiates that relationship and makes you & your brand memorable.--- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app--- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/nerdbrand/messageSupport this podcast: https://anchor.fm/nerdbrand/support
