But something wasn't right. Johnson didn't actually live in the district, as required by state law. After investigating, Wikstrom challenged the election and Johnson was disqualified, which led to a special election. Wikstrom didn't win. But his investigation and challenge helped put a stop to the DFL and "their runaway spending,” he said. Ep 2817 How Do You Select the Right Defense for Your Team's Personnel and Opponent?

Basketball Coach Unplugged ( A Basketball Coaching Podcast)

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 21, 2026 19:00

https://teachhoops.com/ Picking a defense is not about what you, as a coach, like to run; it is about what your current roster is physically and mentally capable of executing at a high level. A successful defensive identity begins with an honest "personnel audit" where you evaluate your team's lateral quickness, interior rim protection, and overall basketball IQ. If you have a roster full of long, rangy athletes but lack a traditional "big," a disruptive, switching Man-to-Man or a high-pressure 1-2-2 zone may be your best bet to force turnovers. Conversely, if you have a slower, more disciplined group, a "Pack Line" style or a 2-3 zone can help you wall off the paint and force opponents into low-percentage outside shots. By aligning your system with your players' natural strengths, you ensure they play with the confidence and aggression required to get stops. Beyond your own roster, selecting a defense for a specific game requires a deep dive into the opponent's "shot profile" and offensive tendencies. In the heart of conference play in January, you must be prepared to pivot your defensive strategy to neutralize an opponent's primary threat. If you are facing an elite scoring guard who thrives on ball screens, you might choose to "Hard Hedge" or "Blitz" those actions to get the ball out of their hands. If the opponent struggles with perimeter shooting but dominates the glass, a sagging zone that prioritizes rebounding positioning might be the tactical edge you need. The best coaches have a "base" defense that defines their culture, but they possess the flexibility to implement "junk defenses" like a Box-and-One or a Triangle-and-Two to disrupt the rhythm of an elite individual scorer. Finally, the defense you pick must be sustainable and scalable throughout the duration of a long season. It is better to be elite at one defensive system than mediocre at four different ones. Simplicity in your defensive rules allows your players to communicate more effectively and react instinctively rather than thinking their way through a possession. As you move toward the postseason, your defense should become your team's "safety net"—the one thing they can rely on when the shots aren't falling. By using member calls and film study to refine your rotations and "closeout contain" techniques, you build a defensive unit that is difficult to scout and even harder to score against. Ultimately, the right defense is the one that your players "own" and believe in with absolute conviction. Basketball defense, picking a defense, 2-3 zone, man-to-man defense, pack line defense, basketball coaching, defensive strategy, youth basketball, high school basketball, defensive rotations, basketball tactics, personnel audit, box and one, triangle and two, defensive intensity, basketball drills, coach development, team culture, basketball IQ, ball pressure, defensive systems, scouting reports, match-up zone, rim protection, lateral quickness, coaching philosophy, coach unplugged, teach hoops, basketball success, defensive communication. Unraveling the Evolution of Football Safety Equipment

Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes: The "Laissez-Faire" History of Football SafetyFootball is the ultimate collision sport, a game of high-speed impacts and physical prowess. But if you were to travel back to the early days of the gridiron, you might be shocked to find that for the first century of the game, the NCAA's approach to safety was almost laughable. In a recent episode of the Pigpen podcast, host Darin Hayes sat down with Timothy Brown of Football Archaeology to discuss the surprisingly slow evolution of football equipment. From the days of "gutta percha" to the highly engineered helmets of 2025, the story of how we protect players is a journey from antiquity to high-tech armor. This epsiode is based on one of Tim's recent articles titled: Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes: Football Equipment Safety Standards. The Early Days: Protecting the Opponent, Not the WearerThe first American football rules were developed in 1876, largely adapted from the laws of Rugby. Surprisingly, the earliest equipment rules weren't designed to keep the wearer safe—they were designed to protect the other guy.Rule #58 of the original handbook barred players from wearing iron or gutta percha (a rigid, tree-sap-based pseudo-plastic) on their boots. "The whole thing was that they banned certain materials to ensure the safety of the other players," Tim Brown explains.By 1900, this logic extended to "sticky or slippery substances." If a team greased their jerseys to make themselves harder to tackle, it was seen as an unfair advantage rather than a safety hazard. Even the first rules regarding cleats—which were originally just triangular leather nubs tacked onto the shoe by a cobbler—focused on preventing players from spiking their opponents. The Era of "Only Fools"One of the most startling revelations from Brown's research is how long the NCAA resisted mandating essential gear. Take shoulder pads, for example. By the mid-1920s, shoulder pads were becoming harder, utilizing fiber and sole leather. The rulemakers required these to be padded on the exterior so they wouldn't bruise an opponent, yet they didn't actually require players to wear them at all. This "laissez-faire" attitude peaked in 1970. The NCAA's "Read-Easy" version of the rulebook actually noted that while shoulder pads weren't required, "only fools" would play without them. Despite this smart-aleck commentary, the NCAA didn't officially mandate shoulder pads until 1974.A Timeline of MandatesThe shift from "recommended" to "required" happened in fits and starts, often with high schools leading the charge and the NFL trailing behind:Helmets:High schools mandated them in 1935, the NCAA in 1939, and the NFL finally in 1943.Knee Pads:Mandated by the NCAA in 1932—again, primarily to protect the head of a tackler from a hard bony knee rather than to protect the runner.Face Masks:The NFL required them in 1957, but the NCAA didn't officially make them mandatory until 1993, largely because they assumed everyone was already wearing them.Mouth Guards:These became standard in high schools in 1962 and colleges in 1972.The Helmet Revolution and Quality ControlBefore 1978, there was no universal quality standard for football helmets. You could essentially wear any "head covering" and call it a day. In 1978, the introduction of NOCSAE certification changed the landscape. This requirement for...

Send us a textYour gut has tried to warn you before. That flicker when someone lingers by a bathroom door, shadows you to the elevator, or blocks your path with a smile and a prop—it's not paranoia, it's a baseline breaking. We dig into a practical method for spotting a cunning opponent early, whether it's a low-level hustler at the pump or a higher-stakes actor at a major event. The mechanics of deception don't change; only the stakes do.We start by stripping away the jargon and defining terms that keep you clear-headed. Opponent isn't “enemy”; it's anyone competing for advantage in a shared environment. From there, we map the four recurring tools that reveal intent: access, blending, manipulation, and timing. You'll learn how bad actors create closeness, hide in plain sight with props and roles, steer your attention, and pick their moment. Then we teach BASE—Baseline, Anomaly, Simplest explanation, Experiment—a concise loop you can run in real time to test what you think you're seeing without overreacting. You'll hear concrete examples from gas stations, hotels, tourist piers, and event lines, plus how to communicate what matters with short, useful language that prompts action. We walk through MLCOA versus MDCOA to balance likely and dangerous interpretations, then show low-calorie experiments—changing angle, reversing course, quick contact, second set of eyes—that force a reaction and buy time and distance. If you can catch a shoplifter's access play, you can disrupt a more serious plan using the same cues. This is situational awareness you can practice today: clean, repeatable, and calm under pressure. If this helped sharpen your instincts, follow the show, share it with a friend, and leave a quick review.
