The Bridgeport Poltergeist remains one of America's most disturbing and hotly debated haunting cases. In this episode, Anne and Renata investigate the terrifying 1974 events that turned the Goodin family's Bridgeport, Connecticut home into the center of an alleged supernatural siege. As violent paranormal activity drew police, firefighters, reporters, and legendary investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, one question refused to disappear: was this one of history's most convincing poltergeist cases, or an elaborate deception? Examine the eyewitness testimony, the evidence, and the enduring mystery behind one of the most infamous hauntings ever reported. Racial Trauma and the Nervous System: How Chronic Stress Shapes Our Bodies and Culture

Illuminated with Jennifer Wallace

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 16, 2026 55:56

In this episode, Jennifer Wallace and Elisabeth Kristof are joined in person by Dr. Lovey Bradley, NSI certified practitioner, BrainBased facilitator, and facilitator of the NSI BIPOC Affinity Group. Together they examine how racial stress and systemic oppression live in the body, how they shape nervous system patterns across generations, and what post-traumatic growth actually requires when the environment itself keeps activating survival. Dr. Lovey opens by sharing what brought her to this conversation, including a moment of messaging Elisabeth out of frustration, asking why race still has to be such a defining factor, and what it would take to start breaking those walls down. The answer they keep returning to: it starts with having the conversations. From there the episode moves into the physiology of racial stress, how chronic exposure to discrimination activates the HPA axis, elevates cortisol, suppresses progesterone, and drives the specific health disparities that show up disproportionately in melanated bodies, including fibroids, endometriosis, heart disease, hypertension, and chronic pain. Dr. Lovey names what she sees in the women she works with and connects those physical realities directly to suppressed expression, ancestral stress load, and the specific demands placed on bodies that have never had the systemic safety to soften. Elisabeth grounds the conversation in current research including the work of Resmaa Menakem on embodied racial trauma and Tema Okun's writing on white supremacy culture, which she connects directly to nervous system dysregulation rather than personality or ideology. The episode also traces how cultural conditioning normalizes threat-based behaviors like urgency, perfectionism, and emotional repression as efficiency or success, and what that means for everyone living inside those systems. Dr. Lovey also shares the story of how she accidentally created a healing community for melanated women after a single post went viral in a Facebook group, and what the response revealed about the collective hunger for real, unperformed connection. Topics Covered How racism functions as a chronic threat signal that reshapes the nervous system, not just belief or behavior What the HPA axis, cortisol, and progesterone have to do with racial stress and women's health outcomes How suppressed expression contributes to physical disease in melanated bodies What Resmaa Menakem's framework adds to neuro somatic approaches to racialized trauma Why white supremacy culture traits like urgency and perfectionism map directly onto chronic stress behaviors How the urgency to fix or regulate can itself become a form of bypassing in healing spaces What post-traumatic growth looks like at a collective level, not just an individual one Why witnessing state violence on social media is a genuine nervous system stressor, even for those not directly targeted How Dr. Levy's community for melanated women came to life and what it is building toward Chapter Markers 0:00 - Why This Conversation Had to Happen 01:57 - Welcome: Racial Trauma, the Nervous System, and Post-Traumatic Growth 07:25 - What Racial Stress Looks Like in the Body, for White and Melanated Bodies 10:44 - Post-Traumatic Growth at the Collective Level: What It Actually Requires 15:35 - The Danger of Regulating Out of Activation Before the Cycle Completes 18:09 - The Neuroscience: HPA Axis, Allostatic Load, and Chronic Racial Threat 24:27 - How Racial Stress Shows Up in Hormones, Cycles, and Women's Health 29:25 - Resmaa Menakem, White Supremacy Culture, and the Nervous System 38:42 - Dr. Levy's Community for Melanated Women and What It Is Building 41:35 - Witnessing Violence at Scale: What It Does to All Nervous Systems 49:11 - What This Work Has Made Possible: Dr. Levy on Choosing to Create a Different World 51:59 - Closing Reflection: What Post-Traumatic Growth Requires of Us Collectively Ways to Engage with Neurosomatics: Neurosomatic Intelligence is now enrolling : https://neurosomaticintelligence.com/nsi-certification Join us for a two week trial of neurosomatic practices at rewiretrial.com Free BrainBased neurosomatic workshop for entrepreneurs at rewirecapacity.com Sacred Synapse: an educational YouTube channel founded by Jennifer Wallace that explores nervous system regulation, applied neuroscience, consciousness, and psychedelic preparation and integration through Neurosomatic Intelligence.  Wayfinder Journal: Track nervous system patterns and support preparation and integration through Neurosomatic Intelligence. [Interview] Returning to Connection in Chaotic Times: Indigenous Wisdom on Healing, Addiction, & Inner Freedom with James GoodinIn a world that feels increasingly intense—filled with fear, stress, and uncertainty—this episode of The Activate Change Podcast is an invitation back to connection, spiritual grounding, and inner freedom.Chloe Faith Urban sits down with Arrowhawk (James Goodin), a Cherokee elder, healer, and beloved mentor, for a candid conversation on prayer, ceremony, and Indigenous wisdom—and what it means to live in alignment with the sacred trinity of mind, body, and spirit. Arrowhawk shares how disconnection from the Earth, the divine, and each other can fuel isolation and chaos, and how ceremony as medicine can be woven into daily life—sometimes as simply as blessing your coffee with intention. You'll also hear powerful teachings on the sweat lodge ceremony as a path of healing and transformation, particularly for those navigating addiction recovery, burnout, grief, trauma, or a loss of meaning. Recorded in late fall, this conversation feels especially timely: a reminder that worthiness isn't earned, and that freedom is an inner choice, even when the outer world feels dominated by fear and control.Note: There's a brief audio shift mid-episode due to a recording interruption. We kept it in to preserve the integrity, wisdom, and healing medicine of the conversation. In This Episode We Explore:The sacred trinity of mind–body–spirit and why “everything comes in threes”How disconnection fuels isolation, anxiety, and social chaosDaily rituals and ceremony as tools for grounding, energy clearing, and resilienceThe sweat lodge as a ceremony for healing, transformation, and reconnecting to the selfHealing the healers: why helpers, therapists, and practitioners need support and renewalJoy, humor, and laughter as medicine in hard timesTeachings on freedom, domination, and choice from an Indigenous perspectiveFeather medicine and how different feathers support energetic healingWhy “unworthiness” is an illusion—and how to reclaim inherent worthAddiction and ceremony: finding your way back to yourself—“the answer is in the mirror.”Resources & LinksFor More About Arrowhawk and The Red Road to Wellness Center:https://www.facebook.com/groups/478758235503796/------------------------Our Free Gift:

The conversation delves into the legal implications surrounding executive sessions held by city councils, particularly focusing on a potential settlement related to a police shooting case. Legal expert Steve Gooden discusses the protocols that should be followed during executive sessions, the authority of city solicitors in settling lawsuits, and the political sensitivities involved in such cases. The discussion highlights the importance of transparency and accountability in local government actions, especially when dealing with sensitive legal matters. Takeaways Executive sessions must state the subject matter before convening. Public officials can only discuss certain topics in executive sessions. Voting on settlements must occur in public sessions. Transparency is crucial for taxpayer trust. Legal protocols exist to guide executive session discussions. City solicitors have limited authority to settle lawsuits. Council approval is needed for significant settlements. Political sensitivity is heightened in wrongful death cases. Taxpayer lawsuits can be a recourse for violations of transparency. Public response can influence political accountability. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We've found your daughter's purse on the ground..." For exactly 100 nights, Gil Harrington and her family stumbled, agonized, and learned to function in the uncharted hell of the Missing. Twenty-year old beautiful college co-ed Morgan Harrington, chock-a-block full of potential and promise, had gone to a concert and vanished. This is the story of a devastated mother crawling out of blind grief to become America's most skilled huntress. With love, eloquence, and social media as her only weapons, Gil Harrington pursued her daughter's murderer for five years until he was unmasked as the marauding serial murderer, the Back to School Killer who had hidden in plain sight as a genial, lumbering Charlottesville, Virginia cabbie. Morgan's mother was so crucial in the pursuit of the Back-to-School Rapist and Killer, Jesse Matthew, that Crime Stoppers recognized Gil and her non-profit foundation, Help Save the Next Girl, in solving what prosecutors called "the Super Bowl of Crime Cases." But Gil Harrington, this mother of a murdered precious daughter, is something very different from an investigator. Hers is one of the rare, intimate voices needed in our world right now, when fear and hatred are rampant. Her voice marries the pragmatism of an incisive oncology nurse and the originality of an authentic, raw prose-poet to give the world the tool kit we all need to forge hope. Harrington's voice is joined by artist, Jane Lillian Vance, who attended Matthew's trials. Vance's essays witness Gil's grace, and the stunning alchemy of darkness into freedom.https://amzn.to/41eqoLRBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/the-opperman-report--1198501/support.

Send us a text if you want to be on the Podcast & explain why!Dr. Jacob Goodin - https://www.drjacobgoodin.com/cscs-acceleratorEver feel overwhelmed by energy systems, wondering why your clients need to know about ATP or glycolysis? Dr. Jacob Goodin cuts through the complexity to reveal how bioenergetics knowledge transforms your coaching from guesswork to precision-guided results. The conversation begins with a clear breakdown of our three energy systems: the phosphagen system (lightning-fast but brief), glycolytic system (moderate speed and capacity), and oxidative system (slow but virtually unlimited). Dr. Goodin explains how these systems work in concert—not isolation—to fuel everything from explosive jumps to marathon runs. What makes this discussion particularly valuable is how he translates complex physiology into practical coaching insights.Perhaps most eye-opening is the myth-busting around the "fat burning zone." While lower-intensity exercise does use a higher percentage of fat for fuel, Goodin clarifies why this approach isn't optimal for fat loss: "The most time efficient way to lose fat is to build muscle and do higher intensity exercise." This single insight could transform how you approach conditioning for weight management clients. The podcast delivers golden nuggets about programming structure, explaining why putting cardio at the beginning of a workout compromises force production and hypertrophy gains. We learn why power and skill work should come first, strength second, accessory movements third, and conditioning last—a sequence backed by physiology rather than tradition. What separates this conversation from typical fitness content is its balance between science and application. Goodin doesn't just explain what happens in the Krebs cycle; he shows how understanding these processes helps you design better work-to-rest ratios, choose appropriate modalities for different clients, and create training sessions that satisfy clients while delivering results.ReaWant to ask us a question?
